This looks like a well-built HD.... but looks are deceitful. This external HD has a FAT32 format, as opposed to the Windows standard NTFS. This means that most Windows users will spend hours & hours reformatting this HD in order to be able to make full use of it, especially if they want to copy large files (over 4GB), which the FAT32 format cannot handle. In my case, three different computers (with Windows 7 & Windows Vista) failed to reformat it: I always got an error message at the end, after 12 hours of reformatting process (12 hours each time!). This is the sort of beautiful product that is wrongly devised (FAT32 format) and, as many other Taiwanese & Chinese goods, seems to have no quality control. Buyer beware!

I bouth this product a while ago, so far is working very good, the reason I am writing the review is because three days ago a did test the anti shock feature. I drop the unit (un intentional) from about6 feet. I figure the the unit was gone, but when I connected it work fine.

Now that I am going to use it I am getting an error that the device cannot be started. tried and tried on several computers...NOTHING. I am very disappointed and frustrated and so far has not heard back from anyone at SP... I almost never write reviews but after soending so much $$ for squat im very unhappy. i am sure others that had the drive work are thrilled but as of now I feel like I spend over $100.00 for a paper weight .

Ordered the 1 TB SP A80 drive and also a Crucial Survivor 64GB flash drive from Amazon,both arrived the next day.The A80 is seriously fast, it reads and writes over 100MB/S with my 2012 macbookpro retina.It is >2x the speed of the Crucial flash drive btw, which is the opposite of what I was expecting.

purchased 12/20/2011 review date 7/4/2012Use - used daily for work approximately 8 hours a day. in morning connected to laptop and in the evening unplugged and stored in a well padded zippered hard casedrive appears to be well made and functions well both for usb2 and usb3 ports. looks are deceiving the actual usb port on the drive is not well stabilized and mounted resulting in its mechanical failure. a shame since everything appeared to work well.summary - this isn't a rugged hard drive

Silicon Power Rugged Armor A80 1 TB 2.5-Inch USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 Military Grade Portable External Hard Drive SP010TBPHDA80S3B (Blue)It takes an hour to do just a couple of gigabytes. I downloaded their widget and ran the tasks and its not speeding things up.Is it suppose to move this slow? My computer is has USB 2.0 connection with it.Any suggestions? What speed does everyone else have?Update! I have no idea what was wrong with the thing. Vista just locked up after awhile and I couldn't do anything until I held down the power button and reset the computer. Anyway, forget the widget, I just copying and pasting some folders over at a time, and its going just fine. Got over a hundred gigs of my 600 gig hard drive copied over, and still working on the rest.Its surprisingly small, holds a whole lot of memory, does not heat up or make noise at all.

Bought this after reading about all the problems others were having with outboard hard drives from other manufacturers. This one seems to be well made, and I like the design. I've only had it two months--can't attest to it's ruggedness or longevity. When I first got it, it couldn't do a Windows Image Backup (on my Win7 64-bit laptop). I reported it to tech support via email. Within two days I received a response asking for some more information (not bad considering the time difference between here and Taiwan). I sent them the information, and within 7 days they had a firmware update that fixed the problem. One more little glitch they straightened me out on within two days via email. I've never had such responsive tech support from a disk drive manufacturer before.
