Truly an amazing product. I have owned many external hard drives in the past, and this is by far the best. I have already accidentally dropped this drive about 2 ft once already onto the floor with no issues at all. By comparison, my old WD drive fell over from a vertical standing position and broke with the loss of all data. I am a consultant that travels frequently, and I needed something that could take damage, and it does do that. But the drive is also extremely fast, runs 100% USB powered and has a built in cable. It is a bit more expensive then other portable drives with the same amount of space but this is clearly a case where you get what your pay for quality-wise. A solid, overall 'A'.

Speed:First thing I tried to do with this drive was copy over 27.6 Gigs worth of movies. Average write speed was ~70MB/sec. To my surprise, some files were "too large" to copy to the drive. As it turns out, those files were each over 4 Gigs..meaning I needed to convert the drive's format (from FAT32) to NTFS to handle my >4Gig files. I did so simply by going to the command prompt and giving the command "convert d: /fs:ntfs" (I converted d: because that's the drive letter associated with my Silicon Power drive) After I converted to NTFS and did the same copy, I saw average write speed of just over 100MB/sec. Very nice. FYI: The system I did the copy from is Windows 7, 64 bit.Size/Durability:This drive is a bit bigger and heavier than the Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex portable drive, which for some reason was a surprise to me. I haven't had a chance to test its durability, but it looks/seems pretty tough, the casing is metal, not plastic. I bought this drive together with this Case Logic case: http://www.amazon.com/Case-Logic-Compact-Portable-Drive/dp/B000HDJT4S/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_bUnfortunately, the case is just a little too small for the drive..still the case is quite nice, so I will keep it.Overall, so far, I am really liking this drive.

Everything is TOP NOTCH.This is produced in Taiwan (not China), by a very reputable company, and this product backs up everything that is advertised about it. I love the design, especially with the extra cable built in. I transferred a 2 gig program from my laptop to this using the USB 3.0 cable via a USB 2.0 port in about a minute and was floored. the same program to my thumb drive took about 15 minutes. I now keep over 30 gigs of pictures backed up on this thing, as well as all my homework (ACAD drawings) I've never had anything corrupted or fail to load.Accidentally dropped it on the asphalt from waist height and other than a small nick in the paint on the corner you would never know.only CON is that it doesn't come with a case, and it was too big for the case I bought for it. Any suggestions on a successful case purchase would be appreciated because I love this beast.

They emailed back a few times, but when it came down to sending further instructions (RMA) they stopped responding. I would not purchase another drive by Silicon Power again, especially one claiming to be rugged.

Although I have not tested the ruggedness of this drive by dropping or otherwise mistreating it, there is some comfort in knowing that it has been ruggedized. Even though it uses a USB 3 interface, don't expect a big speed increase. A hard drive can only pull data off the disk so fast, and its this limit that will determine the data transfer rate. I am seeing about 85 MB/sec for sustained transfers. An SSD may make use of the higher data rate, or a RAID 0 set-up. I'm happy with the disk for what it is and travel with it as extra storage for my laptop.
