Although I have not tested the ruggedness of this drive by dropping or otherwise mistreating it, there is some comfort in knowing that it has been ruggedized. Even though it uses a USB 3 interface, don't expect a big speed increase. A hard drive can only pull data off the disk so fast, and its this limit that will determine the data transfer rate. I am seeing about 85 MB/sec for sustained transfers. An SSD may make use of the higher data rate, or a RAID 0 set-up. I'm happy with the disk for what it is and travel with it as extra storage for my laptop.

FastLooks greatSolid- I've not tested it but it looks and feels tough.Cool during transfer(my buffalo gets warm)Quiet but there is a quiet high pitched noise that emits during transferHeavier and bulkier than other usb hdds. You are looking at about a 1.5x the size and weight of non super protected hdds. This is the price for the protection really so it shouldn't bother you if you are after protection.The USB cable is convenient but not the most secure fit. It is fine if you don't start walking about with it dangling about.

I purchased this a little over a month ago and it has treated me great so far! As pictured, the drive comes with a short USB cord (~4 in, end to end) that snaps into a side compartment of the enclosure. This is a really handy feature that allows me to just pack up the drive and cord together, without having to worry about wrapping it up for transit. The drive also comes with a longer USB cord in case it is ever needed.Another thing I like about this drive is that there is no pre-installed software. I believe the WD and Seagate external drives come with software that can't be removed (hidden partition?). This is as close to buying an OEM drive and external enclosure that you will get... plus the added benefit of the ruggedness. As much as I would like to test dropping or submerging this drive, I will trust the others that have done so, and hope I never have to find out if it is as rugged as advertised myself. I am using this drive with a Macbook Pro, so am unable to take advantage of the USB 3.0 speeds, but the drive is working great with USB 2.0. I believe it came formatted as FAT32 and I have since reformatted it to HFS+ without problem.I couldn't be happier with the form factor, ruggedness, and simpleness of this product.

This hard drive looks decent, like the pictures. It is a bit heavy, which is to be expected from a rugged hard drive. The first one I received only showed up about half of the time when plugged into a USB port. I thought that it was a driver problem, but I tried it on 3 different PCs after installing the driver, and it showed up more and more infrequently. Finally after a month it stopped showing up at all, which was just beyond the amazon return period, unfortunately. I was able to receive an RMA number from the company's website, and I mailed the defective unit to Hong Kong (which cost about $12). About 2 weeks later I received a new (or refurbished?) drive, which seems to work well after the first couple of weeks. I was impressed that the company replaced the defective product with a reasonable effort on my part.
