If this is a quiet drive, I would hate to hear a loud one. This drive came as OEM in my Dell XPS 9100 and while it is fast, passes every diagnostic, it's seek process is extremely LOUD! I am already wishing I had my old Western Digital back. This thing sounds like the Seagate I had in my old 8088 IBM. If this is progress, Seagate has been sounding still. I have already requested a warranty exchange and will let this site know if this drive is an anomaly. Very dissappointed at this point.

No Problems with it yet.... Another product I purchased just to get my Computer Build up and running. If all you need is a HDD to start your computer, browse the net and normal every day stuff, i would purchase this. Id buy this again unless i had 100$ more to dump into a Velociraptor or 200+$'s more to buy a SSD

A great drive, easily installed in an external enclosure. I had wanted to image my laptop's hard drive and Seagate have a special software available that would do that well. I downloaded it. Unfortunately, the software searched for "installed" Seagate drives, didn't find mine at the end of a USB cable, and refused to run. I used backup, and will have to look for another software to image my disk.

Seriously, why did I get sent a hard drive without a SATA cable which is ALWAYS included on every other drive? Now I have to wait even longer to get the SATA cable necessary to even install this drive. Would not have bought this if I would have known or would have bought the cable to have them shipped together. This is kind of a waste.

All,Barracuda promises few things1. Rotation Speed - for more data transfer2. Lesser heat compared to previous baracudas3. 32 MB Cache offers good data speedI have been using this HDD for almost 6 months now and i am perfectly finewith the fact that it has not given me any problems tilll now.The only problem with 7200 RPM drives is that they are a bit noisy.BUT, this series is comparatively less noisier than some other barracudas.For me, noise is not a big thing to worry as i have put this in a external esata basedenclosure which i connect as a external storage to my PC.Overall, this is a excellent Hard Disk to purchase.I am expecting 7200 RPM and 64 MB Cache series for my next purchase.Its worth a buy when it comes to barracudas!!

The product arrived new but it was not in the original packaging, for some reason it came in a western digital box, however it was not banged up and was in good shape. This hard drive works great in a RAID configuration. Had it now for a month and no weird noises and great performance. No problems running it on Windows 7.

I bought this hard drive to replace the failed drive in a backup computer that finally had had enough. The computer is back up and running and the new drive is doing great. I have had nothing less than great service out of Seagate hard drives.

I purchased this drive as the primary drive for a new computer that I was building. It is much faster than the IDE drive that it is replacing (the new Quad System helps too). SATA of course, is also faster. However, the new system will accept SATA 6 Gig/sec drives, and it may have been better to hold out for the faster unit. I have absolutely no complaints with the drive so far. Compared to WD drives, I find Seagate (Maxtor) drives to be much more reliable and that is a vitally important consideration.

My hard drive had a bad sector and began to act up. I found this Seagate with simlar specs and five minutes after it arrived I was reinstalling the software. It's very quiet and seems to run cooler than the Western Digital I pulled from the case. So far it's running great. At this price how can you go wrong.

Received the package and thought it could have been better packed. The actual installation of the hard drive took about 15 minutes, but the installation of the OS took a couple of hours. Otherwise, no problems have come up. I would buy another Seagate products.

My disk started clicking within a few weeks of purchase. Linux S.M.A.R.T. monitoring shows a high level of failures. I've started backing up the data, and I hope it lasts long enough for me to transfer the data to a new disk.What a colossal waste of time!

I ordered a pair of the 1.5TB drives for use in a NAS device, and was horrified when they arrived.Though the description rightly advertises these as "bare drives", there was no packaging/padding inside of the Amazon box at all, meaning that the two drives had rattled and bounced around all the way to my front door.I was hardly surprised when I connected them to find both suffering from click death, necessitating a return and refund. While the price is great, the chance that I'll have to go through several attempts to find two drives in working order is a chance I'm unwilling to take.

I may not be the best person to write a review of this drive because I'm just using it for simple storage of picture and video files, and for that, it's great. Don't know how it would perform in a server or a raid unit, but it does what I need it to do just fine. The only negative is the lack of care with which Amazon packages it and ships it to you...leaves a bit to be desired! The one I got does appear to have survived the experience.

I used to trust seagate a lot. I had a 3 drive RAID array for four years with not a single fault until the day I ungraded. So when I built my new array in my computer, I went Seagate again. Well, THIRTEEN months in, and two drives failed. When the first one went down, I ordered a couple identical drives to replace it-- my trust still remained. Well, one week later one of the NEW seagate drives (the ones on this page) has failed. Obviously, Seagate has lost its touch for QC. 1 year lifetimes, failed drives. Even with parity, I don't feel like my data is safe.Do some research, find a reliable line of drives. Not these.

The first order of this drive disappeared somewhere during shipping. Amazon sent replacement next day air which arrived OK. Using a USB SATA adapter I did a clone of my original drive using the free Seagate software. Put the drive into my machine replacing the original drive and it works fine. Booted up with no problems. Been running for a few weeks OK so far satisfied with this product.

MUCH HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT POOR QUALITY OF SHIPPING/PACKGING. AS AN EX-QC GUY I WAS IMPRESSED WITH PACKAGING ON UNIT I RCVD. UNIT UTILIZED THE CLAMSHELL PACKAGE FILLER. UNIT COULD HAVE SURVIVED MULTIFOOT DROP TEST. FYI THIS WAS A REPLACEMENT FOR A FAILED SEAGATE DRIVE. FIRST ONE IN 25+ YEARS!!

I purchased the drive a few weeks ago and have been using it as a backup drive (externally) and thus far has given me no major problems. I did have a problem at first when backing up data. I formated the drive as efat32 instead of NTFS or Fat 32 but when I tried to read it with my G4 Mac, the system didn't recognize the file system thus I had to reformat as NTFS. Other that that it works great.

Only had drive for a couple of weeks, but drive runs quiet and installation was fairly easy except my computer did not recognize it at first. I had to set up BIOS with one drive first before I could select the SATA 1+2 option. Now my computer runs two hard drives like before. I also updated the firmware as some suggested and so good so far!!!

Installing on a P4P800 1019 BIOS (ICH5 82801EB)I popped the drive into my chassis and connected the cables. Windows XP recognized the drive in compmgmt.msc and I proceeded to format it to NTFS (originally tried FAT32 but no joy for files over 4gb, and as this thing is destined to be a media drive, that would have been a poor choice). I pushed all my media over to the drive which entailed about 300gb. I decided to move my swap file over to the drive as well, then restart the computer.BIOS hangs on the drive detection. It sees it, acknowledges it, and even shows that it is SMART capable and ready, but no joy. Digging into the ICH5 design, I came across a lot of material concerning RAID array problems with this drive and southbridge, which had nothing to do with me. However I couldn't find any answers that helped me. I tried to install the drive as the only IDE/ATA drive available, and it still hung on drive detection.I decided to pull the drive and reconnect the main boot drive, go into BIOS, and DISABLE LBA on the new drive's IDE slot. Every other setting I allowed. I turned off the computer, reconnected the SATA ribbon, restarted, and it worked just fine.For good measure I SiSoft Sandra'd the drive's read ability, and it was 97 MBps, way ahead of the other comparables. I don't put all my stock in the test, but the drive reads and writes like a champ.Here's to longevity.

Here is the long and short of it. I purchased two of these drives. One failed. Seagate replaced it (i paid the shipping of 10 bucks to send the drive in) the drive that was sent to replace the bad one failed within a few days. I sent it in, (10 more bucks) and they sent a replacement.These drives were to be used in a RAID 1 configuration. So, all my critical data was not protected for the 4 weeks that this was going on. scary.I would not buy these drives again. In fact, don't know if i would by any Seagate drives again.I am very thankful for their RMA process that was streamlined and easy (maybe they have this down to an art due to a lot of returns???).

this product did what it said it would do, ive been having problems with compatibility especially with new-gen graphics cards and hard-er core gaming, but besides that its fairly solid and performs.

I bought this drive about 2 months ago for a new system that I was building.The drive works beautifully.I can't hear it, although my case fans are set on high.The transfer rates surprised me for a spinning disk. I have seen sustained transfer speeds around 70MB/s, over a random assortment of files (documents, pictures, movies, code).Overall it seems to be a very solid drive, and I've been quite happy with it.I will update my review if I experience any problems with this drive in the future.Update (unfortunately) 10-28-2010:The drive started clicking a couple days ago, and has since failed the SeaTools Generic Long Test. It was accepted for RMA by Seagate, and I am sending it back soon.

Reviews for this drive at Neweegg and other sites painted a picture of unreliability, but I am impressed so far. I suspect poor packaging is the cause of many failed drives. This drive from Amazon had an amazing lightning deal price, was well packaged in a sealed factory cardboard hard drive box and adequately padded in bubble wrap. Was easy to copy the old drives to the new with software from Seagate's site. Drive is very quiet, fast and has lots of room. A little faster than my previous two WD800BB drives in RAID.Only weird thing is that the box is clearly marked inside with the Western Digital logo and motto, though sealed with a Seagate label.

This product boosted my Windows Experience by 1 full point, meaning I can play any game published for the PC with no effort. It is faster and actually cheaper than the older 5200 rpm drive it replaced. The cache is great , it is fast and really quiet, my graphics card and cpu fans are much louder.Thanks Amazon, good product, good price, delivered within two days. And at a price that beat NewEgg.

I've been purchasing these drives for some time now. My MacPro has 3 of these installed and I use them externally in a newer tech reader.I do extensive Lightroom and Photoshop work on a nearly daily basis so the drives get a workout.They have been reliable and not one has ever failed. I have not had the same luck with Western Digital drives.I have also had good experience with the Hitachi Deskstar. The Barracuda has been my staple drive for years and I have no complaints.

I'm a disk hog - I'm currently running with 3 internal hard disks and 10 external hard disks due to all my video processing. Since my first PC purchased in 1984, I've only had 2 hard disk failures - they are both Seagate. My latest failure is a 500GB Seagate drive 7200 rpm Barracuda. It was OEM with my Dell computer and failed after just over 2 years. The other hard disk failure was a 2.5" external drive 120GB that failed after 4 years. Most of my other hard disks are Western Digital, but I do own a few Toshiba and Hitachi drives.

I would have been perfectly happy with this drive except that one of the screw receptors was misaligned or not properly threaded. The drive is installed with 3 of 4 screws and the stub of one that broke off. It appears to be secure enough and to be operating okay but this installation problem was a disappointment. Perhaps if it had come with screws (as it should have but didn't) Seagate would have found this problem and would not have shipped a drive with this defect.

Bought this in spring of 2010, only to have it completely fail by fall 2010. Apparently the 7200 series has known issues. It failed to back up any of my files before it stopped working completely after about 6 months. I lost tons of photos and documents that I thought were backed up. Company offers no help with data retrieval, which starts at a cost of about $1600.I'll never make the mistake of buying anything by Seagate again.

Bought 2 of these for use in a Synology NAS. One of 2 dead in about 2 months. After 2 months operating fine, got an error that the drive array was compromised by Synology OS. Was able to resync the bad drive back into the mirror array, worked ok for a couple days, then a loud clicking from the same drive.Fortunately the drive is under Seagate warranty, but dead in 2 months? The Synology NAS is on a UPS and only used for backups of 2 PCs so it does not receive power spikes, nor is it heavily used. The Seagate on-line return process is fairly painless, but who keeps original packaging after 2 months? Not me! Seagate makes you very carefully package the returned product or they can refuse the warranty replacement. I have a feeling the other original drive may die as well. I'll be sure to keep the packaging from the first replacement drive.Thank goodness I was using the Synology device that caught the error and will allow me to resync the data to the new drive once it arrives.

Good buy even though it is odd size storage (1.5 GB) compared to 1.0 or 2.0 GB. Put in my security system and has not missed a thing. Great buy for the amount of storage.

I purchased two of these drives and they were shipped as lose items in an over-sized box with minimal air pacs for padding. The pair of drives had no packaging other then the anti-static bags, they were just lose so they could bang into each other all the way to my house. The anti-static bags had holes in them from where the hard drives smash against each other while in transit.

I purchased this drive on November 11, 2009 for use with my Netgear NAS. As I write this, I've owned the drive for about a month and it has performed fine so far - no reallocated or bad sectors, etc. However, periodically I notice it making two clicks in a row - "click, click". Not sure if this is due to its being in the NAS - as opposed to installed in a computer - or what, but it seems to perform fine otherwise and the health logs in my NAS do not indicate any issues at all. The clicking is not constant, so perhaps it is because the drive is syncing with the other one or something....who knows. If the drive does fail, well, my data is mirrored onto the other drive on my NAS and backed up to two separate external USB drives AND backed up onto my netbook, and then I guess I'll deal with Seagate's warranty.With technology, you cannot have too much redundancy. :-)I purchased this drive because it is on the ReadyNAS compatible hardware list and the Seagates seemed to have fewer issues than the Western Digital drives.As far as performance, well, it seems just fine. My NAS came with a 500GB drive from the factory, and I believe it too was a Seagate. I've noticed no significant performance difference at all since installing the drive, so I'm happy as my NAS was performing fine before this drive. I'd wager a bet that performance will be more directly and noticeably affected by what interface you are using to connect to the drive, rather than the drive itself.For what it's worth, I had a 1TB USB Western Digital that I was using prior to my purchasing the NAS, and it never gave me any problems during the year I owned it.

This drive was rated by some of the PC enthusiast magazines as one of the better SATA drives. Very fast. I purchased this to replace my IDE drive that was no longer compatible with my replacement mobo. Very fast and quiet. I can't hear the HDD clicking in my case and I have silent 120 mm fans. Great purchase and well worth the price for most users. Word to the wise. If you are looking to use this as RAID0 boot partition, Windows will not support a boot partition greater than 2TB. So, if you're buying this drive for RAID0 on a windows boot drive, buy the 1TB size or smaller.

I spent two hours on the phone with Seagate after finding that there is a known firmware problem with their Barracuda hard drives that causes them to brick (not recognized by the BIOS). Seagate states that they have firmware fix to repair this known issue. They gave me a UPS label to ship it to them to have the fix installed. Fast-forward six hours - This evening at 8:30 PM, they called me back to inform me that they wanted $300 to install the fix, but would be happy to cancel my trouble ticket if I preferred. The drive sold for $200 new. Never again - I'm sticking with Western digital - they do it right.

Have had this OEM Seagate Barracuda 1TB for a couple months now, and no problem so far.Shipped with good enough packaging from Amazon. The packaging is only a box with two support at both ends of HD to hold it in place.Fortunately mine works without any problem when it arrives.
