Got it in mail, package perfect. Attempted to use as replacement drive in PC. Bios wouldn't detect it. Tried to detect it plugged into external drive case. Several systems attempted none could detect it, drive did not seem to spin up. Big thanks to Amazon for fast and easy return policy. Won't be trying anymore of these drives.

I needed a new drive for my laptop,so I went to Amazon. Unfortunately their website has some problems. I searched for Laptop/notebook drives and this product came up in the results(not sure why). So when I saw a Seagate Barracuda 500 gig in the results I was thrilled. I'd never seen a Barracuda drive for a laptop before(I used to work at Seagate Labs in development). So I was excited because I know the reliability and performance of the Barracuda drive. Its a shame I couldn't use this drive. It's an even bigger shame that Amazons' web site is not able to tell the difference between laptop and desktop and that Amazon is charging me so much for returning it that it's not worth it to do so.

I have had good success with Seagate drives in the past (older PATA models). Because of this, I decided to buy one of these 7200.12 1TB drives despite the mixed reviews (and 7200.11 known problems). It failed in a week--good thing I hadn't yet trusted it with much data. At least I can just return it to Amazon and buy another brand rather than being stuck with a refurb or whatever from a Seagate warranty claim.

I purchased 2 of these drives. They are a good buy for the storage space. The only issue I have is not with the product but how it was shipped. We know how drives are shipped in foam or protected crate to protect them. Well the shipping department had one drive in the protective protected crate and just threw the other drive in the bottom of the box where is could be bounced around and banged up. I had to format the drive twice to get it to work. I hope it lasts.

Great value for money but please not that this package was not sealed plus it had no wires in it. The order shipped a week after it was purchased. Not sure why. Happy with the product but shipping took forever.

I ordered two of these for a HTPC build on which I'm working. They're replacing two WD Caviar Black 500g drives in a RAID 0 configuration. They work Great! Very Quite and Fast. Not quite as fast as the WDs, but much quiter. The only problem I am having, and I am not sure if its the drives, my RAID controler software, or my MB BIOS, but I am only able to utilize 1.1t of space per drive for a total of 2.2t. That means I have lost 800g of storage. I have not had the time to research whats causing the problem, since it could be the drives I give them four stars. All in all a good product

This item arrived very quickly and was packed very securely in a damage proof box. I gave this as a present to a nephew with very little experience with computers. Although there was no documentation with the unit, the Seagate site provided all the necessary instructions and documentations. Having purchased an additional drive for my computer, I knew to buy the cable at the same time. My nephew installed the drive and set it up in about 20 minutes. It works perfectly. I would highly recommend this product and vendor in the future.

I purchased the Seagate ST3160318AS bare drive for interim use with one of the same drives I already owned. I built a RAID 0 array for use with my Apple Final Cut Pro HD video editing and production (Studio Pro HD) software. It works great in that capacity. The drive worked as expected. I was very happy to find out that it shipped with the latest firmware that is necessary to keep the drive from failing. Because of the seriousness of the firmware issue I still strongly suggest everyone make sure that their drives have the latest firmware from Seagate on these Barracuda hard drives.

I partitioned and formatted and it only came out to 1.35 terrabytes, I really do not want to go through the hassle of unscrewing the drive, unplugging, taking it out, and shipping/returning this drive back to the sender but seriously, they need to check their drives. VERY disappointing... 150 gigs is a lot to be missing when your spending over a $120.Everything else is fine on the drive though.

i bought 5 drives from 2 lots for a 4-drive raid + hot spare. first drive was courteous and failed (tick, tick..) within a week. the second one took 4 months (this week). firmware is CC1H. on the plus side, seagate's turn around is pretty quick.i wouldn't dream of using one of these drives w/o redundancy.edit: oops.. just lost one of the replacement drives 1/9.3 from the other lot continue to chug along happily, tho, so could be a bad lot. but truly does show you should buy from several sources.

I just received this drive today and was horrified at the way it was packaged. It was loose inside a cardboard box. That's it. I'll give them some credit in that it appears to be a box designed to fit a hard drive, with some extra cardboard around the edges to keep the drive away from the actual edges of the box. But I have no faith that it did much to protect this drive during shipping. Sure the drive may power up and work at first but it may have a very short life - that's exactly what happened to the last drive I ordered like this.So until Amazon does something about the packaging, avoid these bulk drives and look for "retail" packaged drives on Amazon (or a local store). They'll cost a little more but your hard drive will probably last a lot longer.I usually get annoyed when I see people post about things other than the item -- shipping delays, questions about returns, etc -- but in this case I think it's deserved.

The packaging was nice and easy, the drive does what it needs to. Seagate Barraccudas are reliable drives, and the price was right for a boot drive. I recommend it for anyone who needs a new boot drive for a shiny new windows 7 installation. Do yourself a favor and buy a terabyte to store all of your files and back up your music.

Amazon dropped the price another $22 within the next week of my purchase and they don't have any price match guarantee or anything like that so I will think twice and shop around a LOT more before buying it from amazon from now on.

I bought two of these 2 years ago and they keep working just as good as they did from the beginning. I recently bought one more of these drives to build a mid-end computer and it did not let me down either. I am planning on buying one more again to build another low-end computer.Great hard drive overall.

The original 320 GB Western Digital hard drive in my iMac 2.8 stuffed it after only 14 months. I ordered this little baby to replace it. Installation of the drive is straightforward (assuming you know how to open the iMac), it is only a matter of moving the iMac specific mounting hardware and the temperature sensor from the original drive to the Seagate (make sure you have a complete set of small Torx drivers). The Mac OS had no problem recognizing the new drive. The drive is very quiet in this application and performance seems to be appreciably improved over the Western Digital drive (iPhoto and iTunes open and load faster).

I looked at many units, but went with what I have used for years. Seagate has beenmy choice for many years. Some of my older units have been in operation for close to ten years with little trouble. This unit was easily installed, formated, and in use in mere minutes. Great price for a great product. I recommend ths unit if you have similar needs.

After having one of these for just a few months (and just replacing it with a Western Digital) I advise you all to steer clear of them. They are noisy, lock up periodically and have an assortment of other problems that Seagate can't seem to fix. There are numerous other reviews on the Internet from unsatisfied customers. Save yourself a lot of frustration and buy a different drive.

added a second hd for my sons computer so we could install some of the games he received as gifts.this is perfect for extra storage. using it under win xp- after a simple format- it was ready to roll- works just fine- not noisy.It appears they use a special packaging to hold the hard drive in place in the box. good idea.remember when you buy oem hard drives- you do not get the little screws to hold them in place-also have a spare sata cable on hand for the install.

As I type this review, I'm copying the contents of my only Seagate 1.5TB to still be visible to an OS. The drive is clicking loudly, the copy is running painfully slow (2MB/s), and there is a good chance that I'll not be able to get all the data off before the drive completely fails.This is the fourth Seagate 1.5TB drive that I've owned and the last Seagate drive I'll purchase. Two of the 1.5TB were DOA, the other two failed after a few months. All were purchased at different times and from different vendors.In addition to the failure of the Seagate 1.5TB drives, since the beginning of the year, I've also lost a 500GB and three 320GB drives. All of these drives were Seagate drives, and none over a year old.My environment is clean (not dusty and I don't smoke). The computers are on UPS and should have pretty clean power. The machines don't get moved around. I have to assume that Seagate has really gone downhill in terms of reliability.I've slowly been switching over to Western Digital as the Seagate drives fail. So far, not a single problem with WD's 300GB VelociRaptors, 500GB Passport, 2TB MyBook, 500GB MyDVR, and 2TB Green drives... Knock on wood.

Just buy adapters for power and SATA to IDE or a SATA controller card and this will work fine in a computer that isn't SATA ready. Seems perfectly reliable and the speed is limited on my computer to the IDE speed so can't really say anything about that.Giving it 5 stars just because it's reliable and cheap for a lot of storage.

I purchased this drive with the intention of upgrading Win XP to Windows 7. I connected this drive to my hardware as a primary drive and removed all unnecessary peripherals and drives from my system. When I attempted to install Windows XP, I received a STOP 0X0000007B blue screen error. I reseated the drive several times, checked BIOS, etc., but still received the error. I then slaved the drive to my original Win XP HDD, however, Windows could not see the drive at all. After contacting Seagate, they determined that the drive was faulty.I'm therefore returning the drive to Amazon for a refund. I'm very disappointed with my experience with this drive.

I bought two (one for primary drive and one for backup use). One inside workstation, another inside esata/usb external enclosure. I just had to try them, as they blow away everything solely on price.Of course, I focused in on the reliability and firmware problems. Mine came with CC1H, I believe, and Seagate's site says that I do not need to worry. So far (after around a month), they have performed fine (I was not expecting speed demons, and they are not compared to some drives on the market like the raptors, but they are definitely faster than the now three-generation old 500GB drives they are replacing in my setup).I would point two things out: First, I definitely can generate the clicking sound which usually signals imminent drive failure. My external enclosure can sit on its side, and when I leave it in that orientation, that is exactly what happens. As far as I can tell, no problems with drive performance nor function occur, though. Second, I have had some trouble getting my esata drive connection to work in Vista Ultimate. It works fine in Fedora and Ubuntu Linux, so I assume it might be a driver problem. It shows up initially, and then drops out (it scared me because this was similar behaviour to people who noticed problems with raid arrays using this drive). Maybe it is the same problem--but since I do not use them in raid . . . I do know, though, as this is not a problem when I use USB. Since I use the external as only a backup drive, it does not matter to me a great deal.

What's to know? Seagate is a great brand. The product is a lot of fast storage that's relatively affordable per Gig of space. It's huge!It does arrive unformatted, so set aside a day just to let the formatting complete. Also, I used the Seagate Drive Wizard (download from their website) to clone my 400 GB HD to this 1.5TB drive and before swapping them. Worked perfectly after SeaGate tech support showed me how to get the software to recognize the external USB docking station (Thermaltake BlacX (another fine prodduct)) for the clone. The drive is fast, quite, reliable and huge. Everything a Hard Drive should be.

This hard drive is really fast. It was easy to set up even with a SATA to IDE adapter which I had to use with my old computer. I am glad it had a jumper that allowed me to use 1.5 Gb/s since that made my SATA to IDE adapter work better.

I've been using only Seagate drives since the mid-'90s when Western Digital quality plummeted. They're currently the best HDD out there. They cost a little more than the budget brands like WD or Maxtor, but the difference in quality is huge. It's rare to have a bad sector on a Seagate, and I have never had to return one among the dozens I've owned over the years.This drive is fast, reliable, and extremely quiet. I highly recommend it.

I hesitated buying this drive due to all the chatter about last year's firmware issue. In the end I bought three of them 6 months ago, am using them with a startech docking station, and have had no problems whatsoever. I also recommend the WiebeTech static-free case if you're going to be switching these drives out a lot.Drives do fail eventually, so the lifespan is inherently limited. But these have worked flawlessly out of the box since I got them.

I bought this drive for my media center pc, and it is great. The price was right and it serves its purpose. Drive is relatively quiet and doesn't rev up like some drives, which is important in a family room situation. Not much more to say, it's a hard drive and it works great!

I bought two of these 7200.11 model drives in October 2009. One failed immediately and I got a replacement. Over the next month the click-click-click of death began and the drives began to fail.They say that there is a firmware update that fixes this, but in my case it either wasn't applied, or there is more of a problem than they think.Now, the vendor was not Amazon -- it was Fry's and maybe the batches are different -- but I still won't touch the Seagate 7200.11 line for any amount of "savings." YMMV.

I have 11 1.5tb 7200.11s and have had good experiences with them. The only one which ever had an issue was from a local retail store, which was DOA. I believe the retail packaging for the 7200.11 line bears some of the blame for post firmware issues since it is 1/6th the size of the 7200.10 retail box which was really well protected from poor handling. 5 drives are running RAID5 in 5.25" 4in3 hotswap carriages, and 6 are running RAID5 in a SAS expander chassis (in both cases, high flow dedicated cooling). Both arrays are operating 24 hours a day capturing multiple HD video streams and running through online capacity expansion multiple times without any issues in 8 months.

Quiet, fast, low energy consumption. Purchased one 7200.12 at a local retailer for use in an Apple Mac Dual 1.8GHz PowerPC G5 as an upgrade for my 7200.7 160 GB Seagate media drive. So pleased with it I purchased a second from Amazon to swap out my boot drive too. Had good luck with Seagate and Western Digital drives so I stick to what has worked for me.

I used this drive in a Windows Home Server and was one of six drives. Since it was one of six, it's usage couldn't have been that high, compared to a pc with only one drive, yet it began clicking and was immediately unreadable. It worked fine for seven months and gave no warning before ceasing to work. I have another Seagate drive in the WHS that I'm going watch closely and fear that it will eventually die as well. I recommend staying away from Seagate and go with Western Digital. None of those drives have failed me yet.

Just read all the other 1 star reviews here and on other sites (rhymes with "egg"). As everybody has written, there is a serious problem with these drives. Besides the DOE and early failures the most reported problem is the freezing. I bought 3 of these for my HTPC and whenever I play anything (VIDEO_TS, mkv, avi, divx...) I consistently get after 3-5 minutes freezing for about 1-2 minutes. It is very annoying in a HTPC but in a RAID this spells disaster. The worst part of this is that Seagate is doing the "head in the sand" tech support. This reminds me of the Intel P4 math error when Intel initially stated that it wasn't a problem, then that it was not a big deal and then finally replaced all those faulty CPU's.Apparently nobody at Seagate has the guts and brains to come forward and call a spade a spade.Nobody should buy any more Seagate drives until they post a fix on the main product page or the main tech support page. I went to the Seagate forums and there are many messages of people calling and emailing and just being ignored for weeks. There are even firmware updates on bittorrent (WTF?). What kind of company deserts their customers to the point that they have to search on torrents for a solution???I just hope that a big Class-Action law firm will loose their data with these drives and take them to the cleaners. Any company that has this much disdain for their customers should be severely punished. At least the CTO and the responsible persons for tech support and customer service should be fired.Maybe an internet-wide Seagate boycott will wake them up!

Installation of SATA Internal drives is so much easier than IDE ATA, less wiring clutter makes things neat, just installed, downloaded software from Seagate's site, installed, ran and ,,, Done. Fast and efficient unit.

I've been a WD fan for as long as I've been using computers. When my 4 year old WD4000AAKS bit the dust after a reboot the other day, I decided it was time to upgrade to a bigger drive. This was the least expensive drive with over 1 TB so I went with it. I use it to backup my other disks so I can't say much about speed. If it continues to last, Seagate may win a convert out of it.

The drive compares favorably with other similar drives in speed (Diskmark scores are in line with my other drives - not faster or slower - just about the same as my WD WD5000AAKS-00YGA0 and WD WD5000AAKS-00TMA0 but FAR slower than my OCZ SOLID_SSD 64GB). I bought two of these drives. The second caused intermittent computer restarts that was fixed using Seagate SeaTools for DOS software - which reassigned bad sectors that Windows did not find using Scandisk. Disk seems to work fine now and no more intermittent reboots or Windows BSODs. If you buy this drive and encounter intermittent restarts or BSODs, try running Seagates drive tools from bootup - might fix it and you won't have to RMA the thing.
