If you have Windows XP, you might have to go into your BIOS and turn on whichever SATA port you plugged the new drive into. Then, you need to format the new drive. The Seagate website has the info in two different places in their FAQ and the instructions are more complete in one place than the other. Once I got through that, this drive works great on my XP system.

I bought four of these about 15 months ago here at Amazon. One arrived dead, and Amazon quickly replaced it. I agree with the packaging comments - our bumpy long mountain road is enough to destroy anything that isn't packaged well - but I didn't do an autopsy on the returned item.I'm using these in a Readynas Duo, a terrific little item that we use for backups and as a home server. Two in the Duo, one swapped out intermittently for off-site storage of our data. About three weeks ago, the second one started going bad (The Nas immediately reports disk flaws). So I'm faced with buying another one or switching brands, no decision yet. Sorry to see the bad reports, and I'm not really sure how long disks are supposed to last anyway. I'd like a little longer life than 1 year, that's for sure.

In August 2010, my Dell Studio XPS 9100 arrived with two Western Digital drives in a RAID1 configuration. Within several days, they failed; one of the drives became corrupted beyond repair. Dell sent me two idential Western Digital drives as replacements, and customer service directed me through the installation process. By November, these drives failed in the same way. Dell customer service recommended that I use Seagate Barracuda 7200 1 TB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s 32MB Cache 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drives instead and sent me two as replacements. They have worked very well so far. Very fast, but the two drives in tandem can be heard. The only thing I absolutely need in a hard drive is a low probability of failure.Unfortunately, this drive worked perfectly for 1 week. The bad news is I had to return it. The good news is I didn't have it for long enough to have saved anything personal on it. I only had time to partition, load an OS, and go thru windows update 15 times and also load a few applications.After getting most of the system running well, the drive stopped being picked up in the BIOS (uh oh). I swapped cables between a working drive and this one and no luck. Took the drive out and listened as the PC booted up and heard the dreaded clicking sound. Total failure within 1 week... not a disaster but pretty frustrating still.Today I teturned it and bought a Western Digital with similar specs (for about $10 more). I know that Seagate is a reputable company but this has kind of made me too nervous to try again right away.Back up all your data - two places at one time is minimum... think about it.

I have purchased 2 of these drives based upon very good service I have received with it's predecessor, the ST3500410AS which was super reliable, super fast and super quiet. Apparently, Seagate decided to cheapen something in this drive with the ST3500418AS to make more money without assuring quality and it is an abysmal failure. Both of the new drives were almost instant failures and reviews I am reading are backing up my experience and bad feelings! I am now paying $35 more for the WD WD5003ABYX for the privilege of having a decent, reliable drive. So long, Seagate, until you can get your act together again!Update 5/19/2011: I find it interesting that the 1 star ratings are 42% of the 5 star ratings for these drives. Are you listening Seagate?

I bought this hard drive to replace my main C: drive. Everything went well for about 2 days. Then I started getting automatic checkdisk from windows when I reboot after windows crashed. Finally on one of the auto Checkdisk my windows got corrupted after the automatic repairs. I changed hard drives to a good Samsung hard drive that I was using for backing up my data and put it as my main drive. I needed to reinstall a fresh windows again. Now everything is working great with the Samsung Hard drive. The Seagate I am using as a backup now. I have a software that tells me the condition of the hard drive. It was telling me the raw reading error rate was extremely bad from the start. I thought the software was wrong. Now I see that it was correct. This is a brand new hard drive. I not going to go through the hassle of returning it. It is only good for backup storage if at that.

I bought two of these for use in a Synology NAS. I looked at 2TB drives but they were much more expensive and slower. I decided to accept reduced capacity to save money. The faster speed was a nice bonus. This may not be the latest and greatest hard drive available but it remains a great choice at a great price.

I bough the 500gb version for my Dell precision 390 on November 2009.I mainly use it to store non real-life items. It took me a while to figure out how to properly install it and format it but have yet to encounter any problems with it.

I bought two of these internal 3.5 hard drives and they arrived quickly and were new just as described. Hard drives are subject to damage due to banging around but these were packaged excellently and they work perfect. I highly recommend this seller to all the Amazon Community.

I haven't had the drive that long, but it is working perfectly. Installation, like any drive, is as simple as securing it based upon your computer case and plugging it in. The drive is whisper quiet and lightening fast. What more could you want! Highly recommended.

I replaced the old 30G in my computer with this, and am very happy. The process went smoothly -- Seagate provides good instructions and a free cloning utility which is very easy to use. I had to purchase an adapter Ide To Sata HDD Adapter. I tried a cheaper one, but that didn't work out so well.Now I have plenty of room, and my computer's performance is noticeably improved. It does make a cute little grunting noises when accessing the drive, but that's OK with me.

I purchased two of these hd ( 1 TB each) to replace my old hard 80 Gb disk on my HP 2200 pc running XP professional. The installation was easy without any problem. I just installed the new drive as drive one and the old one as drive 2. The bios setup took the new hd right away. I start the machine with the recovery CD formatting the new disk. (This can be done also with any Win XP booteable disk wich will format the hard drive as well). After the Windows installation process was done, I just moved my data files from the old disk to the new one. No problem at all. I really recomend these units.

First, I would like to say that Seagate customer service was very responsive and responded to my RMA request quickly and professionally. I sent in a request and the CS rep contacted me over email and was very courteous. When I explained my problem he told me to send it in for RMA. I shipped my drive in and in about 2 weeks got my replacement drive.The bad news is that the replacement drive seems to have the same problem. I have been trying to install Windows 7 and Steam (a game download service) on this drive. The problems began after installing Win7 and Steam and I started downloading my games. I would get an hour or two into the download and my system would hang. Not an application failure, not a blue screen, it would completely freeze. I've only ever seen that happen with a hard drive failure. On top of that, when the system finally reset itself, the Seagate drive would not be visible to the system BIOS, i.e. the drive was non-responsive. If I did a full shut down and cold start, the drive would come back online.I am quite certain it isn't my system or Win7. I've been using my system with Vista Home 64-bit (installed on a WD drive) for over a year and it's been rock-solid stable. Overnight downloads were no problem, games, Photoshop, etc. no problem. I've installed Win7 on my laptop and it is totally stable.However, once I started using this drive bad things started to happen and just last night I got a warning from Windows that the Seagate drive was failing. This is with my new replacement drive. Whatever the problem is, it is very very intermittent which makes it hard to pin down, but when it happens, it's pretty catastrophic. Total system lockup.I know that if I contact Seagate CS, their service will send me a new drive if I ask for it, but what's the point? I've already had two of these drives in a row get flakey on me including a new replacement drive.I'll probably just accept that I ate $100 on this drive and go get a Western Digital drive to replace it.

I only purchase and use Seagate drives exclusively for compatibility and dependability. We have a Drobo, Synology Diskstations and Servers that incorporate this exact 1TB drive very well, ST31000528AS. It is reliable, quiet and stays fairly cool with average cooling, < 37 celisus or 99 degrees. For other reasons, we use Seagate because some other brands failed. It's fair to say that there are many other brands that are reliable as well, but I try to stick with proven technology and equipment. Loosing your hard drive or several hard drives because of "equipment failure" makes you become a bit paranoid and skeptical about the brand that you were using, not to mention all the headaches of trying to restore or recoup your files from backups. I use Seagate drives at home too, but I don't use this particular model. If I was a home user needing Terabyte storage, then this is the drive to consider. You'd pay more for a faster drive with a higher cache, so access and speed is above average but not optimal. So, if you can find this drive for $60 or less it is a great bargain at todays prices. This is a solid soldier (IMHO).

i bought this hdd for a guy who needed more storage, his pc is an old p4 that seemed to struggle with everything, it had an old 40gb samsung hdd, besides the fresh installation of his os, the added boost(a hell lot) of speed in this hdd in comparison with his old drive is amazing, the difference is like day and night, i can say i am a completely satisfied customer, and i also have 2 more of these in my personal pc (the exact same thing than this but 1.5tb each) if i ever needed another hard drive for any of the pcs i fix or for my own one i would certainly buy more like this

Have been using 2 of these drives since late February of this year (2011). So far they work perfectly and are as fast as I presume they should be.However, I haven't used any type of software which independently tests the quality of the drives for flaws, so until one does that one can't be truly sure of their quality. But so far, so good.

I ordered this specific HD 10/20/10 because the status was "buy from Amazon", it was "in stock", it was "eligible for (2 day) Prime", and I needed it soonest. One day into the process (10/21/10, expecting delivery tomorrow, 10/22/10) I received a cute little note saying "We're happy to report you won't have to wait until NOVEMBER 23th (31 days late) for your order because we found we can get it to you by OCTOBER 27th! (5 days late) Aren't we great?" Well, boys and girls, I could have gotten this exact HD from at least six non-amazon vendors at a comparable all-in price in that same time-frame if I hadn't relied on my good, old "SUB-PRIME" membership to get it to me ON TIME. Moral of this story is: Don't believe amazon listings because our dear little buddies WILL bait-and-switch and introduce frustrations, inconveniences, and delays just because they can. To them, apparently, sheer arrogance is its own rich reward.

I have purchased 3 drives. They were installed on 3 different computers to support Dropbox application. OS is windowsXP professional. One drive got problems with access after 2 months and it finally stopped being accessed. I have requested replacement and I risk to buy one more. I guess I like gambling.

preforms relatively quickly and the noise level doesnt bother me, considering what i paid for it. my fans usually drown it out anyway and I'm not trying to run a library or anything. solid product and a good value.

4 stars since 5 are reserved for latest SSD.This is good standard HDD. I am using it for internal backup.So now I have a storage place for all the work files (16Gb +) each. I is too early to say, if it is reliable storage place, but I surly do hope so. One thing I noticed is that it takes some time to start this drive. However it is probably related to operating system settings rather than to the drive it self.In all - very good drive so far, good speed and price.And I still can't believe it is 1TB. ( I still remember craving 10MB HDD's just "few" years back).

I needed a big hard drive to store my videos, music, and programs. The barracuda is a great hard drive for a couple of reason.1. The noise level is basically none existent, my mini fridge makes more noise than the two 1.5 barracuda hard drives i got.2. read and write speeds are great, programs run flawlessly and there is no lag in videos. I did notice some minor lag when it came to video games that i did not experience on smaller hard drives.3. Packaging was incredibly sturdy with no wiggle room. It was surrounded by air packets so it was cushioned on all sides.I highly recommend this product for people who need a lot of space.

I was just browsing Amazon for a new 3.5" hard drive so I could expand my media space in my desktop. I found this Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM 250GB hard drive for only $40. I have trouble using lots and lots of hard drive space so 250GB was a medium and hit the sweet spot. It is a lot of space which means it will last me for a year or two at least as a secondary hard drive.

This hard drive runs great but be aware it does not have any accessories, documentation, or drivers with it. It also does not have a Molex power connector so you will need a Molex-SATA adapter if your PSU doesn't come with SATA power cables.

I bought the same hard drive a little over a year ago from Best Buy for $70 and it came with cables, a CD for installation and was in a nice secured box. When I got my product from Amazon it was just in a normal brown box in an anti-static bag. Now, how do I know this isn't used Amazon? Anyways, I am installing my Windows 7 now and I am going to check the drive for errors. If I have any problems I am definitely sending this back.On another note, the old drive I bought is failing now, so I decided to get a new one. Didn't know this was the same exact drive until I got it today. Hopefully it will last longer than the other.I would suggest packing hard drives better or put them in the boxes the distributors give you. I would have liked to have the CD.I haven't had any major issues with Amazon, so I will deal with it.

The drive works fine. Other Seagates I used in the past were quite reliable. I hope this one is too. The software for cloning an existing drive is unnecessarily confusing. I would have liked a simple one-click option rather than a bunch of questions that I don't know how to answer. Much noisier than the Western Digital drives I have been using lately. The noise is annoying and I will probably go back to using WD drives in the future.

I ordered this package on the 7th of April and paid $9.71 and I didn't see the package until April 14th. I worked at the post office and for that money it should of been sent priority mail. I will remember that kind of service and will not buy from them again.

I dont know but i have two 7200.11 500gb drives and they work fine on nvidia storage controllers... no firmware update at alll... so i bought 2 more which are 7200.12 and created a new array... a raid 10 with all four drives... the machine even has dual nics that are teamed and connected so members in the house have faster access.... folks hardware makers dont admit to ther faults... look on the nvidia laptop fiasco.... its like rma and move on.... nexzt

I purchased the 1.5 TB 7200RPM (ST31500341AS) drive fourteen months ago. It's installed in a dual fw800 enclosure with a WD drive (WD15EARS). I have the enclosure connected to a system running OS X (10.6). It's been running 24/7 for over a year without any problems.

I have used this hard drive for a few months now, and I can't really say anything bad about the drive itself. However, while researching this product, I did not come across any explicit warning recommending it not be used in a hot-swap dock. Performance is fine considering I have not used straight SATA or eSATA to a computer - only SATA-to-USB dock. Noise is average for a high-speed drive. The killer for my application (open USB dock) is the HEAT. I could grill on this thing after five minutes of just having the drive powered on. It doesn't even have to be working hard to start cooking.I highly recommend only using this drive in a performance high-airflow desktop or a powerful fan external enclosure. My WD Caviar BLACK drive in the same dock never gets hot in open air no matter how hard it is working. I'm not going to give this drive a bad rating, but if anyone is considering buying it, be sure you have the proper setup to support it without risking overheating.

The product is what it is, the description speaks for itself.The delivery was fast, and the packaging good.The size, format, brand and technical specs are somewhat good compared to the average.However, I would have rather not had any SMART errors appearing in the first week of usage, and most definitely, I would have rather not have seen them increasing at a steady rate since then.Since the disc is being used on a RAID configuration, I can afford the uncertainty over the hassle of returning the item from my location, and having to deal with postage.Nevertheless, I would have expected better, wouldn't I?

I just installed this HD a few days ago as a mass storage drive. My OS is installed on a different HD. I really haven't heard any noise out of this drive whatsoever, so I'm not sure what other reviewers are experiencing -- maybe older drives of this same model were built differently. I personally have no complaints!

Dealt with these drives for many years and I still like them. I still have an 80 gig drive from Seagate also a Barracuda on my old pc and it works nice and fast. Do recommends Seagate HD's.

I've heard about the bad packaging but i decided to go ahead and try it out myself so i ordered this hard drive and i dont know if im just lucky or if amazon is really paying attention to their packaging because i recieved it yesterday and it was nicely packaged inside a Western Digital box kind of weird considering the HD is by Seagate but anyhow it was tightly secured in the middle of the box with 2 black plastics so it wouldnt bounce around. I bought this for my desktop because my old HD died so i inserted it and installed Windows 7 and its been working perfectly fine. I will try to keep you guys updated on how this HD works out in the future.

It had been years since I had done any computer upgrades. When my hard drive died, I ordered the SATA; needed the IDE. But then learned about the adapters which enabled me to upgrade to a full terrabyte, and with higher speed than any of the more expensive IDE drives still out there. If you're like me, and holding onto an old computer (which works fine for email, internet, picture and music storage) then check into using an SATA to IDE adapter. Four weeks, no problems. Update...several months, still no problems with drive. UPDATING AGAIN: Years later now, still sailing easy.

Works perfect with my computer as a secondary drive.- Noise Not too much at all.- Speed At 7,200 rpm, I don't think anything could go wrong- Conclusion With the price including shipping and handling. There are nothing I can complaint about. Definitely best buy!

The hard drive works very well, it seems that it use to have a lot of issues with the firmware, but the firmware that comes with these ones is working very nice, but i also update it too just in case :) Anyways if your having second thoughts about buying it because of the old reviews dont worry about it because that bug has been fixed a long time ago.

NEVER SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED:I've watched the issue with these drives carefully for about 2 months. It looks like Seagate solved the problem and that a vocal few were ever really affected. By few I mean relative to the thousands sold. And I am not defending Seagate. This whole fiasco was unacceptable.MY SYSTEM:I picked up 8 of these drives. I'm running them in 4 separate DLink DNS-321 RAID boxes. I've copied about 4TB of data back and forth across them for days. My only firmware update needed was for the DLink so that it could properly handle the new 1.5TB drives.In the end I believe all is well with both the drives and the DLink DNS-321. I will of course update this review immediately if I see any problems.PERFORMANCE:We are able to watch movies from this drive arrangement on 3 computers simultaneously across a 100mb network from the same drive while adding new files to the drive from a 4th computer.This means I can be adding movies unattended to the system while watching an Epic Man movie on the plasma in the living room... while the kids are watching Monsters Inc in the bedroom... and the wife is off watching some chic flick in the Den. :)The combination of DLink and these 1.5TB drives is fantastic and seems as stable as the WD 1TBs I was using previously.PROPER DIAGNOSIS:Don't confuse your drive DIEING after a week with the previous firmware problems of this particular drive. Blame the vendor that shipped the drive like it could bounce !ON A SIDE NOTE:I will say I am sick of Amazon, Tiger and other vendors shipping hard drives like they are indestructible ROCKS. Even if they arrive working, this inadequate packaging is certainly taking years off the life of our drives. One of my 8 arrived DEAD as a brick thanks to this nonsense. I am furious about this issue !Will it take a class action to stop this behavior of guaranteeing future drive sales by damaging todays drives through deliberate mishandling of our purchases ?! Wake up AMAZON ! Wake up TIGER !UPDATE: Dec 14 2009One year later, I own 22 of these drives now. 12 are running daily in DNS-321 Raid boxes. The other 10 are used as back up drives in a drop in SATA adapter. No failures since 2 in the first few weeks, I believe due to poor packaging. About 6 of my drives came with the BAD firmware. I never had issues with that either. Call me blessed. I just think the DNS-321 and these drives work very well together.UPDATE: Jan 8 2011Another year passes and most of my 1.5TBs have all been pulled from DNS-321 RAID boxes and used as loose backup drives in a drop in SATA adapter. I've replaced them with the larger Seagate 2TB drives for larger capacity. NO FAILURES OF EITHER DRIVE 1.5TB or 2TB ! I have a couple Hitachi's and WD 2TBs. The Seagate drives are quieter and come off sleep in my RAID boxes faster than the other brands. All are used for video streaming over a network and do a fantastic job.TIGER has been shipping drives MUCH BETTER. Amazon packagers have sent me drives packed poorly just 2 months ago. I requested replacements and Amazon handled the no charge exchange well. But they should NOT have been shipped that way.

Великолепно
I've had this since January 11, 2011 and I've had no problems with it. I've read about firmware problems, but I think they were resolved before I bought mine. I'd definitely recommend this.
