I basically got this drive for extra storage to round out my HP MediaSmart Home Server. It has a total of 5.44 TB formatted using the Windows Home Server Software. All of my interal drives are this size and all are the brand Seagate.The ease if installation was a piece of cake... very easy to do.The overall performance and quality of this drive is as expected. I never buy new (if possible) but Used Like New. You get a better deal on the item. I would recommend this brand of hard drive to anyone needing a hard drive for a computer or server. You can't go wrong. The noise is not even there... They all are so quiet. The only thing I hear are the fans from the server.I love the price. You won't be sorry for investing in this brand. Highly recommended.

Put this in my 2007 Intel iMac to replace the now "tiny" 250 GB drive that came with it. Data transfer rates seem good and it's nice to have the additional storage. No more external drives for music. The noise level is about the same and temperature seems to be under control ~38 C. I'm happy with it.The packaging wasn't extensive, but seemed to work. I think most of the drive failure problems people have are from being kicked around in shipping. I normally use Fedex to ship drives when ordering components, let the case and power supply, etc. ship by ground, but sensitive items by Fedex. Their boxes are usually less mangled. This was via Amazon Prime, and the 2-day UPS box was in good shape. It just had the OEM drive contained between two plastic, form-fitted inserts. Apparently good enough, but it's only been running for a couple of weeks. Word to the wise, keep your old drive as a backup for a as long as you can and at least a month. If the new drive is going to fail, it's probably going to happen in the first 30 days.

While I must admit that I've had loads of problems with this particular model of Seagate drive (4 DOAs from another vendor and one that died after about 3 months of use), I must say that Amazon appears to have listened to complaints about packaging of OEM drives. Mine arrived in it's static bag and properly secured using the plastic inserts that you find in retail packages. Much better than the packaging at the other online company that just used bubble wrap (and often not enough of it).About the drive. When it's working, it's a good drive. It's pretty quiet and the price for the capacity is still pretty good. Given the checkered reliability record, I recommend having a spare drive on hand for any NAS/RAID array that you may be sticking these into. Seagate is good about the RMA process (you still have to pay to ship the dead drive to them, but they pay the return shipping) in general, but to be without the drive for a week or more can be dicey in a RAID array.

Received item and withing a day or so had the click of death. Yes..I did update the firmware per seagate site.....but the unit without being accessed...started to click when powered on. Totally froze the computer unless I unplugged the power.I never..never..had a hard drive fail like that so fast...but I know I am not the only one with this same problem. Too bad.I order a replacement..hopefully...this one will work longer.

Great HDD for me. I didn't have to install new firmware or anything and it has been working great for several weeks so far. I use it mostly to store and edit large-sized 720p and 1080i video captures. Can't beat the price of under $45 shipped when this was a lightning deal. I don't know about longevity yet, but at this point I'd highly recommend this drive.

Overall, it seems to be a decent drive. It should be noted that you just get the drive-no cables or set up software. In my case, I bought one to put into a drive enclosure, so this was not a problem.

I received a working hard drive that was wonderful for a few months. Then it died, but it was just a firmware issue on four of the five I bought (ranging from 120gb to 500gb) so some repairs and mailing I got back a working harddrive.All of the harddrives I have sent in for repair came back and failed within months of use. No replacement offered, blackballed as out-of-warranty. I thought at some point maybe this was all in my head, or maybe it was handling but slowly but surely every harddrive I sent in for repair has failed shortly after. So either there is some severe mishandling or Seagate makes a terrible product. As I'm not alone in this (from the reviews) remember that you pay what you get for...and with the cheap price you get a resounding: shotty terrible hardware plagued with firmware issues, joke warranty, poor handling procedures by the *repair* techs...and the sense that your data will never be safe again. The five Year or even three year warranty seems to be out of warranty after a year? How strange.Buy something else, anything else...but remember they own maxtor too so I wouldn't really recommend them either.Four Failed Harddrives out of five bought is a bad track record. You've wronged me bad, Seagate. And may never get me or any person I meet back as a customer. My four Harddrives, all failed after about 1000 hours total of use. On the dot.

great internal harddrive that self-recognizes so no need to set jumpers. It was pre-formatted so I saved time there too. It worked seamlessly to become the C: boot drive for a Windows 7 Professional new PC build using an AMD quad-core CPU.

Having already own a dozen Seagate drives in the past, this latest drive exceeds all my expectations. My thanks again to Amazon for delivering such an excellent product and even more superbly excellent and fast service/shipping. I ordered this on Thursday and unbelievably received it on Monday. It just doesn't get any better.12/22/2010Just received another 500GB SATA drive to upgrade a HP DC7100 desktop purchased from my workplace. The poor unit only had a 40GB SATA. Good thing it was another Seagate drive. Using Seagate"s disk wizard it took me less than 30 minutes to clone the smaller drive onto the bigger one. My son is so happy that he can now load Adobe Photoshop and Flash CS3 with room to spare. Hopefully it will last for some time or else I will get a 1 or 2 Terabyte unit. Great drive.

It made my Mac Mini Intel Core 2 Duo 2.53 GHz, OS X.6.4 (Build 10F569) much faster. I measured 80 MB/sec read/write speeds. You may, or may not, get the same results but my Mac Mini is much faster, and if you're mechanical then go to ifixit.com and look at their videos to see how to install the hard drive.

This isn't a complaint about the drive, but about Amazon's lame purchase policy.I needed 4 drives, Amazon would only let me buy 3.I called to complain - no dice, part of their fairness policy to prevent someone from buying out their stock (price isn't 'that' great......I complained I wasn't looking to buy 100 more over the limit, just ONE more - no dice.Web site wouldn't let me buy the 4th on a separate order becasue it 'knew' I already ordered 3.Solution? I had to create a new account with a different email address (all other info the same) to buy this single drive.Lame Amazon, LAME.Great drives - I have FOUR of them (hear that Amazon) in a RAID50 array.

These drives work great in my Thecus NAS N5200 RAID6 configuration with 3 of the 5 drives being these. The other drives being the enterprise version. Very quiet and extremely cool. At least 3-4c cooler than the 750Gb enterprise versions I replaced. I was a bit concerned moving from the enterprise drives to the desktop drives (being these). However, after using them, I would not hesitate to purchase them again and use them in any NAS. Don't pay extra for the enterprise versions. Save your money and go with these. I got a used mac pro off craigs list, and wanted to utilize it's much spaceness. Thus I decided to purchase this sizable hard drive.I partitioned it: 1TB & 500GB. I'm using the second 500GB slab for a dual boot of fedora. It's a really annoying process, but you'll be happy to know that this hard drive has continued to hold all my data as promised.

The Seagate Barracuda gives me the freedom to concentrate on other work while it adds loads of movies unattended. It is an apt companion for my Dell which runs on Windows XP. I made three partitions - 100, 100 and 120 - to store movies, work files and music and was able to format all the three partitions without a pause. However, the video streaming was a bit of a problem because there has been pauses in-between probably due to the firmware problem. Checked for firmware updates and now the problem seems to have stopped. Wondering why it dropped out of raid config without any reason on a couple of instances. I had problems downloading the internet connection drivers. Required help on that..And I would like to know why Seagate did not include the chassis screws?

I purchased three of these drives to expand the internal storage in my heavily upgraded PowerMac video editing system. The drives perform as advertised, but I failed to check the peak current draw at start-up which exceeded the available current in my 1KW power supply. The peak start-up current is about 45% higher on this particular model, all other specs are the same or very close to the other 1TB drives I own. My solution to the problem was to move two of the drives out to an external drive enclosure.Overall, a very good value with good performance.

I tried 3 of these drives and was disappointed to see read and write errors, as well as bad sectors, start to pile up after only a few days of heavy use. There may be good ones out there too, but it only took three bad drives to convince me to move to a different vendor.

Its a hadr drive, it does what hard drives do, my only reservation is the fact that amazon no longer does any form of "price protection" so I have no way of knowing whether or not I got a good deal. But in the end the price was acceptable.

I've always had good luck with the Seagate brand and this drive lived up to my expectations. Drive isn't plug and play, needs to be formatted in order to use. I bought it along with a Coolmax 3.5" enclosure [...] to use as external backup. Works great!

This HDD died after under 3 years of light use. I would expect a hard drive to last longer than that. The drive still spins up but does not provide data storage.

1.5TB for under $100?If you are building your own PC these are a fine choice for your "cheap and deep" storage area. Buy them in pairs, mirror them (RAID 1), and forget about them.Spend your cash on your Solid State Drive for boot and swap. Put your high-IO areas on a set of more expensive, faster drives.But for archives? It's hard to beat a 1.5TB RAID 1 set for $190.

After a couple of experiences with Western Digital HDs i cannot rate an HD with a 5. This Seagate has been working properly so far, i did not havev any type of trouble with the setup since my PC recognized it with no problems. It's a little noisy when it start but overall it's worth the buy.

Why doesn't amazon separate the 1 Tb from the 1.5 TB from the 750 GB from the 500 GB reviews??????? It is impossible to make a decision based on the reviews when one is looking for a 750 GB drive and all the reviews are for other drives. How is this useful?!!!

I dont normally buy used things, but this SATA 500 GB hard drive works perfectly. I recently bought a usb enclosure to use as an external hard drive and it works perfectly. No problems or no loud noises.

I have considerable experience working on computers, having done so for 20 years. This hard drive was quite difficult to get to install properly initially. All previous Seagate drives that I've purchased in the past have installed without a problem, however, this one is an exception to that rule. I was installing this to replace a faulty 750GB drive that was a primary drive in a computer. After I installed the hard drive, and booted up the computer, the cluster count on the drive was accurate. I formatted the drive as NTFS5.0 using a bootable utility disk that has worked wonders for me in the past, upon reboot to install the OS, the drive was no longer reading the accurate size, but rather, was being rated as a 4 MB (yes, MB) drive.In order to get the drive to function properly, I had to initially format it as a Linux EXT3 drive, then reformat it using Windows installation into an NTFS format with a full format instead of a quick format. This was an extremely lengthy process of elimination of circumstances for its miscalculation of size. Once the initial difficulties were taken care of, the drive has performed wonderfully.The technical specs that I have encountered with this drive are as follows:Average latency: 4.22 msecAverage read seek time: 8.14 msecAverage write seek time: 9.55 msecDefinitely a good value if you are tech savvy enough to overcome some initial difficulties.

Bigger hard drives are a bargain now. Don't get one that is huge or you will lose a lot like I did when my WD 500 gigger lost it's file system after a BSOD shutdown.My other seagate is only 80 gigs and going strong after 3 years. I have three hard drives in my pooter, one pata and two sata's.

Seagate had issues with a firmware update that caused a lot of users problems early in 2009. This was unfortunate, as Seagate's Barracuda line has always been the top or next to the top, in throughput. So basically, the people who buy Barracudas are looking for something pretty good for their system.Fortunately, this drive, so far, runs very well. We purchased two of the 1 TB drives and are using them in a RAID configuration. They run pretty quiet and they are truly fast.The bulk drive normally comes in a cheap cardboard box with a wrap or two of bubble-wrap. This does not truly isolate the drive, as, when purchased from another vendor, one arrived with a broken SATA port. This was sent back for a refund, and I got its replacement from Amazon.Amazon ships it in a cardboard box, but it is much better insulated, with plenty of space around the drive and the two ends being housed in shock-absorbing plastic. It looks cheap, but you soon realize it is the most practical way to get a bulk drive shipped.This is a good buy for anyone wanting speed, low noise, and capacity as a low price.

Purchased some of these drives for a RAID, and half were DOA. Seagate's drives seem to have taken a nosedive in reliability recently. This is, of course anecdotal, and may not be cause and effect, but it seems that since much of the production was shifted from Thailand and Singapore to China, the drives are not reliable. I have been using Seagate drives for more than two decades, and have had great success until the last few years. Maybe it's a coincidence, but the only Seagate drives I've had fail were the ones purchased in the last couple of years, and all were produced in China. It has been more than a few, now. Half of the examples of this model I purchased were DOA- one, for example, spun up, but was unformattable. Drive failed the Seatools tests and reported a huge number of unrepairable bad sectors. If you can't count on HDs to be reliable, how can you function (computer-wise, of course)? Of course, I back up redundantly and in real-time, but who wants to go messing around having to constantly restore data? Also, Amazon's "Frustration-Free Packaging" is a little on the skimpy side as far as protection goes.

I'm a graphic designer who uses this drive to store not only Photoshop files, images and other materials, but have also taken advantage of the extra space to house my music, web scripts and more. The drive works great on my older model Dell 8300 running an older PATA drive. I highly recommend it.

This is a serial drive, so if you have an older computer you will need to buy a parallel to SATA adapter in the form of a cable or converter hardrive connector. As others said the packaging could be better, there was really very little packing to minimize vibration during shipping. Luckily the hardrive worked. Very quiet and smooth operating unit. You can tell that Seagate and other long time hardrive makers really have made great improvements. The big problem in getting it to work is that you have to get it formatted for your operating system to work (Windows 7). It would be nice for them to give you a piece of paper showing you where to get support, especially to have it setup for NT format. I finally got it done but it took a lot of "fooling" around to get everything running.

So far so good. Using it as a media drive for music and video and haven't seen any drop in playback speed compared to when media was on a much smaller drive (~80GB).

I got this hard drive cause i was running out of space. Now I have plenty to put all my photos and videos. Hope it last long. Seems to be good so far so good. Noise level is low. Speed is fast. My C drive was running at 25% free space. So my pc was running slow. I got this drive and moved all my big files over to it so I can free up some space on C drive. Cleaned C drive, Defrag it and it's running fast again. I love it. I highly recommend it.

I purchased this OEM (meaning no box or manual, just the drive) hard drive from Amazon. Shipping took almost two weeks. But I can not believe it when I received the box. I could hear the drive bouncing around in the box. I could not believe it. I opened the box and that was NO packing what so ever in the box. Just the drive in anti static wrap and the packing list. The static bag was pretty beat up and had holes in the corners where it had banged around in the box during shipping. I am returning this drive. I will not risk my data to a drive that has traveled the country rattling around in box for days.I can hardly believe Amazon would ship anything in this manner, especially a fragile hard drive.I have purchased many things for Amazon, like books and they have enough bubble wrap and those air bags to take a beating, but a hard drive, come one, Amazon you can do better and should know better.Go forward I will stick to books, heck after this, maybe not even that.I have photos and video of the box and drive showing it being opened for the first time.I would recommend buying computer equipment from a computer company and not a book company that does not know how to ship.

I purchased this drive to replace one that failed in a 5 year old Dell 4700. It was a easy to install and reload the operating system, all the user accounts and all of the software I wanted. Luckily I had been automatically backing up all data files so I was then able to quickly put all use files back in place. Reloading the OS and needed applications got rid of accumulated junk so at the end of the day the computer ran faster than pre-crash.Great price, great product.
