These 500GB drives are being used to upgrade our Seagate 80GB Sata 1 drives (almost 8 years old) at the office. We have had no problems with the old 80's or the new 500GB Sata 2 drives. Very good performance and very quiet! Highly recommended!

I believe computers are tools. I want the best hardware and software for the lowest price--it doesn't have to be at the bleeding edge. I also build systems for myself and close friends, non-gamers. I have owned just about every make and model of hard drive there is, including a number of Seagates back to the late 1980's. They have always performed well for me--and this one is doing just fine so far, but It's only been running a few months, and quietly, thank you Seagate. How it will do 1-2-3-4-5 years from now, who knows?I was a bit concerned about this drive because the packaging from Amazon was poor--just a few inflated baggies in the box for cushioning and the drive rattled around a lot in the outer box. Amazon should oversee their shipping partners more closely. Returning a DOA drive is a hassle. Should I receive one from any merchant, I would think more than twice about doing business with them again.

I needed to expand a Linux/Ubuntu installation I have for my small business and this came across as being the right size drive for the right price. Unlike other reviewers, my drive arrived from Amazon well-packed in a properly-sized box, so, no complaints at all about the shipping. No complaints either about the drive. I'm using it in an old PC that has IDE interfaces. For the IDE to SATA conversion, I picked up a "SATA Serial ATA Hard Drive/CD/DVD-ROM to PATA/IDE Interface Convert Adapter" by HDE as part of the same Amazon order. Nice pairing. The drive has been up and running for about 5-6 weeks now and all seems well. db

After I used it for a week, it crashed. It's code was not one of the firmware codes that needed updating. I lost the receipt so my own fault for not returning or RMAing. It may have overheated cause I got it to work for a while by separating it from the drives in the cage more and putting an external fan on it. That and I'm seeing problems with that SATA port. Not to be too ambiguous, but I don't trust SATA as much as I used to.So possible causes:1) controller bad on the motherboard for that SATA port (seems unlikely, but one of the PS/2 ports went out)2) SATA header for that port is bad. I tried the drive on a different port, but it may have been too late.3) SATA 1/5 with SATA II drive? Not really compatible?4) Seagate sucks (possible)5) Drives too close in the cage, improper airflow, open case. (Heat damage)So now I'm building a new PC with proper design, proper airflow, proper static precautions (no more popping drives out of the bag and handling without a wrist strap), hiqh quality motherboards, best cables I can find. That and buying only 1.2M MTBF drives from WD. No more data loss! Eventually RAID 1 and hot-swapping. I got a UPS too to clean the power in case that is a problem, and my new PC has well-spaced drives, 2 120mm high CFM fans, 5 hd 80mm fans in the middle bulkhead.I don't trust SATA.

EDITED REVIEW: Ok, I wrote a review earlier prior to receiving my 2nd drive from Amazon. I received a drive with the CC1H firmware and it is totally awesome, no failures whatsoever, no streaming issues, no lockups - no failure to detect the drive, etc... btw I use windows only, no Mac or linux etc, and have not used this drive in a Raid setup. My plan was to exchange the drive I received which had the SD17 firmware that I updated to SD1A. I still had problems with streaming video and video playback in general - read my review earlier for more details. I say WAS going to exchange. Since receiving the new drive I checked one last time on the Seagate website for firmware and found they now have SD1B firmware for my original drive. After flashing the firmware - which went very smoothly and did not destroy any existing data - it seems to work at or very near the same level as my other drive with the CC1H firmware. The drive is incredibly fast in tests with HD Tune software - my max read speed with either drive is always over 102 Mb/s and that is better than my Raid 0 setup that gets 70 Mb/s or better for maximum sustained read speed - and that is with 2 250gb Seagate drives, which performs very nicely for a moderate desktop system. I'd like to try it in a Raid 0 but I think I'll just keep the 2nd drive as a spare. I decided to just keep the 1st drive and the 5 year warranty Seagate offered until early this year. Seems to be a solid drive now after the update - it does get warm so I recommend a ventilated enclosure with a fan for sure with these to get maximum life.(OLD REVIEW) I have had this drive for a few weeks, and I called Seagate when I first got the drive because I read about the firmware problem. Well, they told me I had the SD17 firmware and that was one of the drives that may need to be updated, but they wouldn't give me the download unless I experienced problems. Well after trying to use the drive, I couldn't even boot on my Asus a8v motherboard, tried different jumper settings and nothing would help, so connected it to another pc and it was detected with that one. Instead of waiting for another 1/2 hour for Seagate tech support I ended up downloading the firmware posted on that Eggy site and did a firmware update using a usb flash drive. The update was successful and I thought that would be end of story. Well, it still wouldn't be detected with the Asus motherboard (Via 83837 SATA chipset - sata I) so, I figured it wasn't compatible with the chipset even though other sata II drives worked fine. I decided to use a external usb/eSata enclosure with the drive, I copied about 900 gb of data onto it - music/mpeg files etc and things seemed to work ok, but the transfer speed (read / write speed) was much slower than it would have been with the sata connection. Anyways, using this drive for a media center pc / dvr became a nightmare - it would stop / freeze about 20 minutes into the movie. It stops and then is not detected by the pc. I could sometimes go to standby then come back and it would work again, other times, I have to shut down completely and reboot. It is almost impossible to watch anything straight through on this. I have tried disabling the write cache (in device manager - drives - optimize for quick removal / or for performance) and either way it has problems. I am sending back for replacement and I hope I get a better drive - I used to trust Seagate and for the past 5 years have been very pleased with them until this drive.

Pros:Fast, roomy, quiet, and cheap. Quiet compared to other similar hard drives.Cons:Scared of all hard drives made in the last two years as many have had problems. This is not just a Seagate problem, but all hard drive manufacturers. This is a great hard drive that I use for my image backups on my main computer. It's quiet and remains cool compared to other hard drives I have used. I have used several of this specific model of hard drive and have never had any troubles, but others have. But all hard drive manufacturers have been having problems, usually solved by firmware, where the hard drive bricks in a short period of time. It's not Seagate specific. I'd recommend this drive, but I'd also recommend that a buyer test it out with some heavy duty file copies to and from this drive and a check using a utility like HDTune or CrystalDiskInfo or another hard drive utility.

Unfortunately the HDD I received was damaged.I tried SEATOOLS and DiskWizard from Seagate's website but they (and Windows) do not detect any disk (my PC BIOS does not detect any HDD either)... It just makes a clicking sound known as the "Click of Death"... it denotes a physical damage and these sounds can be caused by a malfunctioning spindle, Read Write head or loose components.I have another Barracuda 500GB drive which has been working great for over 2 years... I believe it is a matter of luck. However I am glad that Amazon refunded my money. I will probably buy another one but I might do it from a local store, I do not want to wait for another drive that might arrive damaged...

This drive failed within 12 days of purchasing it (grinding click of death). Just prior to biting the dust it passed the entire suite of SeaTools diagnostics with flying colors! I sent in for a replacement and it was DOA out of the box. A SECOND replacement lasted a whole 26 days before grinding to a pitiful end. After that I gave up and got a refund -- less restocking fee. The two Western Digital 1TB drives I got instead have thus far been trouble free (going on six months now). This is a cheap drive in every sense of the word. It is less than useless, since you cannot trust even a working model with your data; it has a high failure rate. If you own one of these and it is still working, I would suggest backing everything up to a reliable drive and tossing it. That's better than losing 1.5TB worth of data! If someone were to GIVE me a new one of these drives I would recycle it. I wouldn't even try to resell it on eBay since I value my feedback too much.Seagate's large capacity consumer drives have gone downhill. I would only consider buying their enterprise-level HDDs at this point (which I cannot afford anyway) since they are tested thoroughly and are not cheaply designed/manufactured. Avoid this model in particular! If you read all the horror stories about this drive and buy it anyway (like I did), then you've no one to blame.I frankly don't know what Seagate could do to get me to buy their drives again. Once you lose trust in a storage device, what is it worth? Perhaps if I hear nothing but rave reviews about their drives for a few consecutive years, I MIGHT consider the possibility of thinking about imagining a scenario in which I could theoretically contemplate the potential of evaluating the prospects of a hypothetical purchase... maybe.

If you have Windows XP, you might have to go into your BIOS and turn on whichever SATA port you plugged the new drive into. Then, you need to format the new drive. The Seagate website has the info in two different places in their FAQ and the instructions are more complete in one place than the other. Once I got through that, this drive works great on my XP system.

I bought four of these about 15 months ago here at Amazon. One arrived dead, and Amazon quickly replaced it. I agree with the packaging comments - our bumpy long mountain road is enough to destroy anything that isn't packaged well - but I didn't do an autopsy on the returned item.I'm using these in a Readynas Duo, a terrific little item that we use for backups and as a home server. Two in the Duo, one swapped out intermittently for off-site storage of our data. About three weeks ago, the second one started going bad (The Nas immediately reports disk flaws). So I'm faced with buying another one or switching brands, no decision yet. Sorry to see the bad reports, and I'm not really sure how long disks are supposed to last anyway. I'd like a little longer life than 1 year, that's for sure.

In August 2010, my Dell Studio XPS 9100 arrived with two Western Digital drives in a RAID1 configuration. Within several days, they failed; one of the drives became corrupted beyond repair. Dell sent me two idential Western Digital drives as replacements, and customer service directed me through the installation process. By November, these drives failed in the same way. Dell customer service recommended that I use Seagate Barracuda 7200 1 TB 7200RPM SATA 3Gb/s 32MB Cache 3.5 Inch Internal Hard Drives instead and sent me two as replacements. They have worked very well so far. Very fast, but the two drives in tandem can be heard. The only thing I absolutely need in a hard drive is a low probability of failure.Unfortunately, this drive worked perfectly for 1 week. The bad news is I had to return it. The good news is I didn't have it for long enough to have saved anything personal on it. I only had time to partition, load an OS, and go thru windows update 15 times and also load a few applications. After getting most of the system running well, the drive stopped being picked up in the BIOS (uh oh). I swapped cables between a working drive and this one and no luck. Took the drive out and listened as the PC booted up and heard the dreaded clicking sound. Total failure within 1 week... not a disaster but pretty frustrating still.Today I teturned it and bought a Western Digital with similar specs (for about $10 more). I know that Seagate is a reputable company but this has kind of made me too nervous to try again right away.Back up all your data - two places at one time is minimum... think about it.

I have purchased 2 of these drives based upon very good service I have received with it's predecessor, the ST3500410AS which was super reliable, super fast and super quiet. Apparently, Seagate decided to cheapen something in this drive with the ST3500418AS to make more money without assuring quality and it is an abysmal failure. Both of the new drives were almost instant failures and reviews I am reading are backing up my experience and bad feelings! I am now paying $35 more for the WD WD5003ABYX for the privilege of having a decent, reliable drive. So long, Seagate, until you can get your act together again!Update 5/19/2011: I find it interesting that the 1 star ratings are 42% of the 5 star ratings for these drives. Are you listening Seagate?

I bought this hard drive to replace my main C: drive. Everything went well for about 2 days. Then I started getting automatic checkdisk from windows when I reboot after windows crashed. Finally on one of the auto Checkdisk my windows got corrupted after the automatic repairs. I changed hard drives to a good Samsung hard drive that I was using for backing up my data and put it as my main drive. I needed to reinstall a fresh windows again. Now everything is working great with the Samsung Hard drive. The Seagate I am using as a backup now. I have a software that tells me the condition of the hard drive. It was telling me the raw reading error rate was extremely bad from the start. I thought the software was wrong. Now I see that it was correct. This is a brand new hard drive. I not going to go through the hassle of returning it. It is only good for backup storage if at that.

I replaced the old 30G in my computer with this, and am very happy. The process went smoothly -- Seagate provides good instructions and a free cloning utility which is very easy to use. I had to purchase an adapter Ide To Sata HDD Adapter. I tried a cheaper one, but that didn't work out so well. Now I have plenty of room, and my computer's performance is noticeably improved. It does make a cute little grunting noises when accessing the drive, but that's OK with me.

I purchased two of these hd ( 1 TB each) to replace my old hard 80 Gb disk on my HP 2200 pc running XP professional. The installation was easy without any problem. I just installed the new drive as drive one and the old one as drive 2. The bios setup took the new hd right away. I start the machine with the recovery CD formatting the new disk. (This can be done also with any Win XP booteable disk wich will format the hard drive as well). After the Windows installation process was done, I just moved my data files from the old disk to the new one. No problem at all. I really recomend these units.

First, I would like to say that Seagate customer service was very responsive and responded to my RMA request quickly and professionally. I sent in a request and the CS rep contacted me over email and was very courteous. When I explained my problem he told me to send it in for RMA. I shipped my drive in and in about 2 weeks got my replacement drive. The bad news is that the replacement drive seems to have the same problem. I have been trying to install Windows 7 and Steam (a game download service) on this drive. The problems began after installing Win7 and Steam and I started downloading my games. I would get an hour or two into the download and my system would hang. Not an application failure, not a blue screen, it would completely freeze. I've only ever seen that happen with a hard drive failure. On top of that, when the system finally reset itself, the Seagate drive would not be visible to the system BIOS, i.e. the drive was non-responsive. If I did a full shut down and cold start, the drive would come back online.I am quite certain it isn't my system or Win7. I've been using my system with Vista Home 64-bit (installed on a WD drive) for over a year and it's been rock-solid stable. Overnight downloads were no problem, games, Photoshop, etc. no problem. I've installed Win7 on my laptop and it is totally stable. However, once I started using this drive bad things started to happen and just last night I got a warning from Windows that the Seagate drive was failing. This is with my new replacement drive. Whatever the problem is, it is very very intermittent which makes it hard to pin down, but when it happens, it's pretty catastrophic. Total system lockup.I know that if I contact Seagate CS, their service will send me a new drive if I ask for it, but what's the point? I've already had two of these drives in a row get flakey on me including a new replacement drive.I'll probably just accept that I ate $100 on this drive and go get a Western Digital drive to replace it.

I only purchase and use Seagate drives exclusively for compatibility and dependability. We have a Drobo, Synology Diskstations and Servers that incorporate this exact 1TB drive very well, ST31000528AS. It is reliable, quiet and stays fairly cool with average cooling, < 37 celisus or 99 degrees. For other reasons, we use Seagate because some other brands failed. It's fair to say that there are many other brands that are reliable as well, but I try to stick with proven technology and equipment. Loosing your hard drive or several hard drives because of "equipment failure" makes you become a bit paranoid and skeptical about the brand that you were using, not to mention all the headaches of trying to restore or recoup your files from backups. I use Seagate drives at home too, but I don't use this particular model. If I was a home user needing Terabyte storage, then this is the drive to consider. You'd pay more for a faster drive with a higher cache, so access and speed is above average but not optimal. So, if you can find this drive for $60 or less it is a great bargain at todays prices. This is a solid soldier (IMHO).
