I very much like this drive. It is fast, quiet, and has had a very good history in our raid servers. HOWEVER, ordering this drive from Amazon was sadly a mistake. Three drives were ordered last week and when they arrived our IT department was blown away at the lack of packaging. Three drives were placed in a large box free to slosh, clank, and bang into each other. The only padding that was included was air filled bags. The drives, of course, failed every test our raids put on them just to initialize them. Our Raid server immediately upon installing the drives notified us that all three drives were experiencing extreme data loss and should be replaced as soon as possible.Love the drives and love Amazon but I have to suggest ordering them from any other vendor until Amazon realizes that "approved" packaging is not 3 small drives placed into a 14" x 10" box to slosh around. Those that are experiencing problems or those that are thinking about ordering - look at the packaging when it arrives and save yourselves headaches and return the drives if they are not adequately packed! Nobody likes installing hours of software just to have a drive die 6 months later.- Bri

I bought two of these drives for my HP MediaSmart Home Server model EX495. Packaging and shipping were excellent. These drives appear to be the exact model currently shipped with the HP MediaSmart EX495 Home Server. HP EX495 1.5TB Mediasmart Home Server ( Black) Both installed in about a minute without a hitch. I added them to the server storage pool with one click in the MediaSmart configuration application, and they have been running quietly and reliably ever since. By the way, I bought the server here, as well. Best prices I could find anywhere on both the server and drives, online or brick-and-mortar. I've had better luck lately with the Seagate brand than with Western Digital. Also note that you must use the 7200 RPM drives with the HP MediaSmart EX495. Slower drives may be a little bit cheaper/larger, but, unlike these drives, they are not recommended by HP for use in the MediaSmart server.

I used this SATA hard drive as a second internal mass storage device. It was a matter of connecting it to the motherboard with a SATA data cable, connecting the power source and a single BIOS setting change to make it visible in Windows Explorer. Formatting this drive made it ready for anything. I am very happy with this purchase. File size is not a problem anymore.

Loud?? The complainers must have really sensitive ears, this is the quietest drive I've ever owned. I can't tell it's accessing data unless I look at the flashing light on the outside of my case. The drive installed flawlessly. The drive is a real fast one, too, it's noticably faster than any I've used in the past. Basically, you expect a hard drive to perform right out of the box, and this one does! I've had issues in the past with reliability when using WD drives but I dig the Seagate products, never had a crash or a performance or installation problem. Love it!!

I purchased three of these drives. I was hesitant after the problems with version 11 but after reading a review on how fast there drives were and reading that the version 12 drives were fixed I went ahead. I set up two drives in a RAID 1 and used the third drive as my boot drive. Within 24 hours my PC was slowing down and during boot I was getting a "RAID degraded message". Then the clicking started. I isolated the clicking drive by pulling the power from the drives one by one. It was one of the RAID drives. I sent it back to Amazon and received a new drive. I installed the new drive, the RAID rebuilt itself. Less than 24 hours later my system started to slow and the clicking started again. This time it was the Boot Drive. Same process, returned the drive, got a new drive and installed the drive. Less than 24 hours later the new boot drive started clicking and freezing my system. 3 of 3 is a 100% failure rate. In fact Amazon has chosen to not replace my drive, they will only provide a refund. How can a company like Seagate have such poor quality control. I love the performance of the drives but........

I installed this as a second drive in my desktop computer and have been satisfied with the performance. I would rate it as very quiet. If I listen closely I can tell that it is running, but that is about all. The only sound that is really noticeable is when it auto-parks after it has been idle for a while, and when it restarts when I access it. I actually enjoy hearing the "snap-snap" sound that occurs when the two drives auto-park in sequence when the computer goes to sleep -- I guess I am just easily entertained! One caution: this is an OEM package, so don't forget to order a SATA cable and the appropriate (very short) 6-32 screws to go with it, as there is nothing in the package except the drive itself. I was able to find "retail package" drives locally, which include the SATA cable in the box (don't know if it includes screws), but they were all the 7000.11 version, not the 12th generation drive like this one. The 7000.12 is supposed to be quite a bit lower in power consumption, and based on the wattage readout on my UPS I can confirm that this drive adds very little load to the power supply.

I purchase 4 of these drives over the period of a month. They all have under 100 hrs of use and only one is still operational with substantial errors and warnings from the S.M.A.R.T diagnostics on the drive. Working with the vendor is a challenge, they would like you to run their diagnostics but on dead drives nothing happens and getting to support without that is a challenge, still trying. Apart from that, the drive sounded like a great solution for storage but given the failure rate, I'm not happy or would NOT recommend them. At least if support was accessible, then you could work with that. Some of folks complained here about packaging, in my case the boxes arrived in very good conditions and the drives were well protected.

I ordered this on a gold box deal for $92. What a steal! You do always pay for what you get, because I have returned not one but TWO, and still do not have a functioning drive. After requesting a replacement for the second drive, Amazon sent me an emailing stating that they will just refund my money rather than replace another drive.I read the reviews, and checked for a firmware update before attempting anything else. Both came with updated firmware. I tried nearly everything to try to get both drives to work, using all of Seagate's available tools after Windows could not format. However, I quickly discovered multiple bad sectors on both drives. The first drive couldn't even pass the Seagate DOS short test!If you can get a drive that works, then maybe you're just lucky. I should have listened to the reviews, but I thought that it was impossible that so many drives were truly DOA. Having experienced first-hand, I know now that this may just be a faulty design.

Well, I went into this purchase with my eyes wide open, having read several reviews here and elsewhere with purchasers recounting problems with this particular drive stalling, almost always associated with RAID arrays. Those reviews also included several more technically minded people who had tracked down a firmware update (mine took version SD1A) for the drive that apparently resolves most or all of the problems others have had.I downloaded the firmware before the drive arrived. Then, when the drive was delivered, I read the firmware version printed on the label on the drive, noticing that it was indeed one of the revisions that had the bug mentioned above.I installed the drive, turned on the computer, then - before the bootup started - changed my BIOS settings to set the SATA controller to IDE mode, disabling all other hard drives, then set it to boot to floppy.I then inserted a bootable floppy with the firmware updater on it, rebooted, then waited for my system to boot to the floppy. Then, I executed the required command from the command line to start the firmware update, then waited for approximately one minute for it to complete, which it did, indicating no problems.I ejected the floppy, rebooted, reset the BIOS settings to recognize all drives again, exited the BIOS, then allowed the system to boot normally.I partitioned the new drive under Linux at its full size, made the files ystem (it should come as no surprise that a 1.5TB drive would take some time making the file system that big!), then migrated my data over from my existing 500GB Maxtor drive.Well, there has not been even a hint of trouble after what has now been nearly a month of intensive usage, having moved well above the drive's full capacity worth of data. This huge drive appears to be speedy and reliable after all.If I really thought I needed more than the 2+TB worth of space I now have, I would not hesitate to buy another.Who knows, my small drive (200GB) is about five years old, and it may give up the ghost, in which case I will grab another Seagate 1.5TB, although there will probably be a drive of 2TB or larger by that time.

I've only had the drive for about a month and the real test of longevity will come in the months and years to come. The drive is easy to install and the software that Seagate provides will permit you to easily set up the drive in a number of different ways. As far as noise is concerned the drive seems very quite with fast access times although I've not made any actual measurements - just my perception. The bottom line is hopefully these 12 generation drives do not suffer catastrophic failures like the 11th generation did. However on that note I will say that Seagate was fast and efficient in replacing two failed 11th generation drives that I had the misfortune to buy - albeit with refurbished 10th generation disks instead of new 12th generation drives (sigh). One final note regarding Seagate hard drives. I've recently purchased three Seagate 500GB drives and not a one of them had the correct model number labeled on the box. Really strange from my view point but the actual model numbers seems to be only available on the drive itself.

I bought the extra software from Acronis, but it still didn't recognize the new array. One of the drives in the old array (the maxtor) failed while I was using the Acronis software to copy an image to my external backup array. Finally, I was able to get the new array to work by using the utilities from a Western Digital drive (the one that survived the backup operation) that I installed two years ago. I have had no problems.About my usage:The drive is installed in a computer which I built. It is a secondary drive used to back up my Ubuntu files (about 200GB worth) twice a week and to store older files that I no longer use. Windows 7 also uses the drive as backup whenever I log in to that, but it's not often. I have partitioned and repartitioned it maybe 5 times. I was running Fedora 11 from the drive for a few months but have since uninstalled it. I defrag the NTFS partition once a month or less.UPDATE: 2 years later. Still works fine.

Be very careful if you buy Seagate drives and want warranty service. I bought a retail drive from a retail store 2.5 years ago because I wanted the 5 year warranty just in case something goes wrong. My drive died last week. I contacted Seagate for warranty service and the CSR told me the drive was an OEM drive and did not have a warranty from Seagate.I actually have the retail box that it came in, with the serial number of the drive printed on the outside of the box. He would not honor the warranty and basically said it could be forged by the retailer. He did not know this box to be legit because I didn't buy it from Seagate directly.I have never had a problem obtaining warranty service on Western Digital retail drives.Check your drive's serial number on the box (if you buy retail) before you open the packaging on the company's website to make sure the warranty is good. Who knows...some retailer just might put an OEM drive into a forged box and sell it as a retail product.UNBELIEVABLE!!!

The price per meg on this unit is the lowest I've seen and I've always had good luck with Seagate drives in the past, so I picked up this drive over the weekend.Installation: I had two smaller IDE drives and wanted to partition the new drive as C: and D:, then image the existing drives to the new partitions. Disc Wizard initially let me set up the primary and extended partitions, then nuked the extended partition and set the primary to take the entire drive. When I wiped the drive and attempted to recreate my intended setup, I got a BSOD. On reboot, C: was 1GB and D: (500GB) was nowhere to be seen. I once again nuked the drive and let Disc Wizard do what it pleased, which was not what I wanted. The drive came up and I imaged my old IDE master to it, then copied my old IDE slave manually.Performance: inconsistent. Sometimes it's blazing fast, sometimes... not so much. Note that this is in regular use (open apps, creating files, etc), not copying between disks.Reliability: absolutely horrible. Disc Wizard will no longer run, hanging on bad sectors. The sectors themselves report to the OS in negative numbers (e.g. -1,372,010). CHKDSK reports 375GB worth of bad sectors. SeaTools (Seagate's diags) report the drive failed on SMART, the long self test, the generic short test, and the generic long test (but passed the short self test, go figure). Active Hard Drive Monitor reports the drive's fitness at 56% and falling.Warranty: Seagate says the drive is in warranty and gave me an RMA. I have to pay for shipping and their packing instructions are extremely (I might say needlessly) specific. If the replacement drive proves good, fine, but Seagate has an extremely bad reputation for quality of late so I'm not holding my breath.Summary: Not worth the price. This drive is simply not up to any reasonable standard of quality.

It was surely jumping or rubbing inside the box, since the antistatic bag containing the HDD was partially broken where the connection pins are located (the more delicated parts).Hopefully after the beating received the HDD will have an average life.Problem is, since this was an international order, the fact of returning the device to USA in the current condition would just rise the costs already brought to me so far.Thank you for putting such a low effort in protecting a delicate electronic device like this along the shipping. The shopping experience this time was extremely disappointing!!!

As always, Seagate makes excellent drives. I do not work for Seagate;rather, I'm just a very satisfied customer. That said, it was an easyinstallation and it's been a flawless operation of the drive. For mydrive, I couldn't use the IDE ribbon cable that was connected to theold drive. I needed a special SATA cable to connect the drive to themotherboard SATA controller since it's a SATA and not an IDE drive. But, this is not a Seagate issue; it's just that my setup requiredthis extra cable which was readily available.I recommend this drive and, in general, Seagate drives. I'm going tokeep on purchasing Seagate drives for my future drive upgrades. One lastitem worthy of mention is that Amazon shipped the drive in a box withfoam inserts to keep the drive in place in the box while in transport. So, no worries about buying bulk/OEM drives from Amazon from thisperspective. Amazon has moved to properly shipping drives after pastcomplaints that drives were being packed loosely in shipping boxes.
