I was waffling between the far cheaper D60 or even the Canon Rebel XSi or the Nikon D90. I finally decided on the D90 mainly due to the large veiwing screen and the size and feel of the camera. All of the professional photographers that we have used to take family photos have had Nikon, so I was already leaning towards the D60 or the D90.The Nikon D60 has a 2.5" LCD display with 230,000 pixel resolution and a 170 degree viewing angle, which means your friends can gather around behind you and everyone will see the same image quality wherever they're standing. The Nikon D90 has a high resolution 3-inch LCD screen. The 920,000-pixel display has a 170-degree viewing angle and appears to be as nice as the new screens found on the D3 and D300. It makes checking focus and using Live view mode that much more pleasant. Live view is very cool because you can see what you are taking a picture of on the screen or you can use the view finder if it is sunny outside. This is also the first digital SLR to have HD movie mode. You do have to focus in order to record a movie but this is not replacing a video camera, this is just another video recording source in case you need it while you are shooting great photos.I am so pleased with this camera. I know it was more than the Canon but the camera FEELS like it should be more than the Canon. The Nikon D90 feels like a higher end professional Digital SLR camera. The pictures I have taken so far have been worth every penny. This was a GREAT purchase and Nikon's support is fantastic. You can call 24x7 and ask any question. They will walk you through whatever you need assistance with. I have called twice now, mainly due to the fact that I did not read the directions very well.Bottom line, I would buy this camera again.

I received the D40 last year, and while I enjoyed it immensely I was ready to upgrade for more creative control. I ordered the D90 as soon as it was available, and I cannot say enough good things about it! The pictures are incredibly sharp, clear, and Nikon colorful. I have gone as high as ISO 2000 with no recognizable noise (unless zoomed in). Even at ISO 3200, it was comparable to my D40 at ISO >800. I loved my D40 and still think it is a great camera for someone who is just starting out, or for use as a 2nd lightweight camera, or who wants something a little nicer than a point and shoot but still really simple. However, once you are ready for more, this is the camera to buy. I have already used the video recorder several times, and while it isn't going to replace your video camera altogether it is wonderful to have. It is great for the quick video shots, such as at little league baseball -- I don't want to film an entire ball game, but it's nice to have video of my son when he is batting. (The sound of the crack of the bat just can't be captured on a still!) So I have been getting great stills at games as well as fun batting videos and end of game celebrations. Also, I have used it at school programs, at the moment when my son is reeling in a fish, at special moments at the zoo and park, etc. Some people may think it's just a gimmick for a serious shooter, and I probably won't use it when I am out seriously shooting. But it's great to have for the user who also has a family and wants to use it to capture memories in their everyday lives. And that's why I think it's brilliant. I can't think of any other purchase that I have made in recent years that has as much versatility and opportunity for use as this camera. Plus, as previously mentioned, I am absolutely thrilled with the photographs that it is producing, and that's what really matters at the end of the day. If you're thinking about getting it, just do it! You won't be disappointed!

I am not a professional, but I do enjoy taking good photo's and sharing them with my family and friends. I have a grandchild and many reasons and opportunities to record his activities. After hearing and reading a great deal about this camera, I made the choice over a similar Canon. I have always been a Canon fan, but decided if I was going to make a long range investment of lenses I needed to do a lot of research and make a long term commitment. I love my choice. This camera has been everything the camera shop experts explained to me and everything I could imagine. The quality and ease of use has been excellent. I really feel I know what I am doing when I use this equipment. I can only say if you are ready to purchase a digital SLR or update to a semi-professional unit this camera will please you in every way. I highly recommend.

As a 35-year veteran user of Nikon SLR's, I find the D90 represents the top of its pack. The only suggestion for improvement is this: the Program Mode gives more weight to shutter speed, rather than aperture, at higher focal lengths with my non-VR Nikon zoom. Net result is I fool with the main command dial more, i.e. flexible Program Mode, to attain smaller apertures. So I retreat frequently to Aperture-Priority mode when focal length approaches 200mm. Not a problem--I simply have nothing else to complain about.I can think of no deficiencies or shortcomings of this fine camera, at least for the advanced amateur photographer. Buy it--you won't regret it!

I absolute love everything about this camera, except I don't know if I can keep it due to its weight. With the kit lense, I find that I can't really hold the camera for more than 1-2 minutes. Additionally, I find my wrist starting to hurt when I hold the camera in one hand while adjusting the settings with the other. This really takes the fun out of using this camera. While I can take photos with it without difficulty, reviewing pictures for any meaningful time period is an impossibility.Do you think I can get used to the weight of the camera if I perservere? I am in a tough spot because to reduce the camera weight at this point means sacrificing image quality and features. I feel that going down to Canon 500d is a significant step down, but maybe I have to do it (d5000 is not an option due to low-res screen).Any tips would be appreciated!

This is a great camera. I've been shooting with point-and-shoots for years, opting for the Canon Digital Elph line of cameras. The limitations of the point-and-shoots in action sequences, low light, or difficult lighting became too frustrating, so I finally made the plunge and bought a D-90. The camera is beautifully capable of handing all the situations I find myself in, for example hiking, at parties, cycling, and for portraits. The ability to shoot at 4.5 fps, take photos in low light, and adjust any function on the fly to try different approaches have made my experience of photography much more gratifying.

In short, this camera was extremely buggy. The shutter release would freeze up on me after I left the camera on for a minute or so. Sometimes, turning it off and on again would unfreeze it, but not consistently. Many times the auto focus worked very poorly, resulting in blurry images - worse than my compact digital camera. Because this was my first DSLR, at first, I assumed that I wasn't doing something correctly. I read the entire manual and experimented with it, but the problems persisted. I brought it back to Best Buy (where I bought the camera). Their Geek Squad is great, and someone who also owns a D90 looked at the camera with me. He was shocked that it was freezing up and couldn't explain the problem. We assumed I just got unlucky and got a lemon, so they gave me a replacement. By the next day, this brand-new camera suffered the same exact problems. I'm assuming there is some kind of firmware bug, but I got my money back. In my experimental stage, I lost tons of what could have been great photos. I'm going back to my compact camera until I can find a better DSLR.

I have owned Nikon cameras for years and years. I still have several 35mm SLRs and because that was all there was in the day, I had to wait to get me film back. When I finally decided to go digital I went cheap with simple point and shoots and always wanted better.I turned 60 this year and decided to treat myself and do better than point and shoot. I checked Consumer Reports and at the top of the list was the D90. The more research I did the more I kept comming back to this camera. I decided on this camera/lens combination because the 18-105mm zoom matched most of my needs all in the single lens. The bottom line is I love this camera. The auto focus is as close to instantaneous as you can get and the feature set is phenomenal. The camera has some weight to it so get a good grip on it and go have fun. You won't be disappointed.

Well, as of a few weeks ago, I was perfectly happy with my Olympus E-510 camera. It took great photos, and served me well. But being the tech-geek that I am, I was intrigued by the Nikon D90's movie mode. I was looking at possibly getting a HD digicam later this year for those occasional times I wanted to record video (family events, recording golf swings, etc.). But then the D90 was announced, so I waited until I could see it in person. I walked into my local camera shop, and played with the camera for about 20 minutes. I was hooked. The movie mode works as advertised. Yes, it has a 5 minute limit (in HD), but I have yet to find that to be an issue. I'm not claiming that the D90 replaces a dedicated video camera, but for 95% of my video needs, it fits the bill perfectly. But as cool as the movie-mode is on the D90, what really won me over was the better dynamic range of the D90. Don't get me wrong, my Olympus took some great photos, but the Nikon clearly handles bright/dark shots better (maybe due to Active D-lighting?). The camera feels terrific in my hands, has all the necessary features for a DSLR today (live view, dust-removal, VR (in the lenses anyway), etc.), and of course takes great photos. The color saturation is also wonderful (maybe the new CMOS sensor). And versus my previous Olympus setup, Nikon has a substantially larger collection of lenses to choose from.Back to movie mode, again it works as advertised. I filmed a few videos using the 720p setting and a 50mm f1.8 lens, and it turned out pretty cool. You'll have to purchase a separate mini-HDMI to HDMI cable to watch on your HDTV, but once you do, you can watch your videos in high-def. Pretty cool stuff. So, my final thoughts are to NOT buy this camera just because it has a video function. It works and its great, but the real reason to buy this camera is because of the fantastic image quality, ease of use, intuitive controls, and of course, the large array of Nikon gear available. I highly recommend this camera!

I bought this a few weeks ago. What an awesome camera. Be forewarned you will have to do some homework if you want to get beyond automatic settings. You can take good photos with it out of the box in auto mode. I bought the Magic Lantern guide with it and am already have taken a few great photos. The camera is pretty well weight balanced and makes shooting pretty easy. Thanks to all the folks that recomended buying a uv filter for the lens. It's definatley nice to not have to worry about dust, dirt, and scratches ruining you lens. I also was happy that the kit includes the LCD monitor cover so that it's protected. One note of caution...be careful with the strap that comes with the kit. When you put it on the camera you have to make sure that you re-feed the webbing through the buckle to secure it. I can see where if you weren't paying attention you could just feed it through the sliding keeper and think you had it secured and then later drop it. Minor but if it saves one persons new camera then it's worth saying. I can't wait to play with the camera more this summer and get to the point I'm using it to it's full potential.

This camera is currently one of the best mid range DSLRs out there. It has everything that an advanced amateur requires. It's also a great camera for a pro to use as a back up. The image quality with the 18-105 lens is brilliant and is as good if not better than it's big brother the D300.I gave this camera only 4/5 stars is because of three reasons. First, the weight. It's definitely one of the heaviest cameras in it's range. The Canons are so much lighter. Second, the battery lid is flimsy and looks like it hasn't been fixed properly. I don't know if this is the case in all their cameras or only mine. Third, it's quite expensive when compared to it's competitors. It would have been nice if this camera had been priced about 150 - 200 dollars lesser than it's current price. Do get it with the Lowepro Slingshot AW 100. It compliments the camera very well. Without a doubt Nikon has mastered the art of manufacturing the best cameras and I would strongly recommend buying this product.

This camera is so nice in its picture quality and has a vast array of image control. I've just downloaded profiles that emulates Kodak Vision 2, Kodachorme, Extachrome, Velvia plus many others. I could keep going on and on but this only feature makes it worth. Video is a bit noisy but it depends if you're controlling lighting. Don't regret a bit about this purchase!

I had the D300 and loved it until this came out.The D300 is great, but it can be complicated at times. The D90 is a D300 in the body of a D70. Sure, there are other features on the D300; metal pro body and seals - but when it comes to speed, handling, and image quality - you will be hard pressed to see a difference.Buy the D300 to impress people.Buy the D90 to take awesome photos, and with the money you saved, you can fund that next awesome lens you wanted.Seriously, it's that good.Former D300 owner, have also owned the D80 and D70.Presently own the D40x, D90 (new - and love), F100 and a FE. Don't ask me about lenses - I own too many as it is.ps. I sold my D300 and got the D90.

The Nikon D90 is my first Digital SLR camera. I have always used mid level point and shoot cameras. For the first few weeks of shooting with the D90 I left the camera in auto mode. I was truly surprised how much better the images looked than my point and shoot pictures even with the camera in auto. I've since moved away from auto and I'm still amazing at the image quality even at higher ISO.The D90 menus are easy to learn. I don't see myself replacing my D90 with anything other than a full frame camera body like the D3 or its replacement. My D90 is going to allow me to capturing wonderful images the precious first years of my sons life when he is born next month. My only complaint is the money it's going to cost me buying lenses and gear as I get sucked into photography.

This camera is an upgrade for my D70, which I dearly love. Short and simple, this camera is awesome. the 3D focus is amazing and the ease of the controls are very intuitive. Of course if you have a D70, you have a slight learning curve since some of the buttons are in a different location (such as bracket) or button driven rather than menu driven...I was looking at the D300 and the D90, and for the price as well as features, the D90 won out. Ken Rockwell gave high marks for the D90 as well, which helped my decision. You won't be disappointed with this camera!
