My previous digital camera was a Canon Powershot (an excellent little camera) which I've had for several years. Prior to my vacation to Colorado this year, I wanted to invest in a serious digital SLR. After studying reports, handling different cameras at the local retailers, and talking to acquaintances about their cameras, I decided on the Nikon D90 with the 18-105 VR kit lens. I also purchased the 70-300 VR zoom lens in anticipation of the wildlife that is prevalent where I was going. It took me a couple of days to become familiar with the features and capabilities of the camera, which are very impressive. The controls and menus are intuitive and the 3" Hi-res viewing monitor is a joy to work with. The results on the trip more than met my expectations. The vibration reduction feature of both lenses worked well and my hand-held shots were crisp. The one aspect of the purchase that is less than stellar is the Nikon software program supplied to organize and view the photos.

I think most of us buying D90 would be someone like me. Goto review website for technical review and skip the rest. Read mine if you use it like I do. Here you go. Enjoy!I have a D50 and just bot a D90. I shoot primary my daughters' school events usually indoor in a gym or threater. I have some of Nikon better F2.8 glasses. With indoor lighting and action such as TKD. The results are sometimes less than satisfactory. When using flash, the subject is well lit but the background would be dim. (you could solve this placing multiple flashes in the GYM like the professionals) when not using flash, you get hand shakes and motion blur. I shot my daughter's TKD blackbelt test yesterday, the D90 blew me away. Here is what it does, on Sport mode with Flash, it selected ISO 1100, F4 and 1/60. subject is well lit, the back kick is frozen to show the form, the foreground and background of the GYM were well lit. The white balance is perfect. I could not have done a matter job myself in manual mode! At the same sport mode, D50 chose ISO 500, F5.6 and 1/60. The subject is well lit, the gym background faded into darkness. When not using flash, D50 just can't get the white balance correct no matter how i set it. D90 white balance was perfect.The D90 giant colorful LCD really tells instantlly if I have got the shot. I would buy D90 again just for catching the highlights of my daughter's belt test.D90 is actually the same size of D50. D50 felt more comfortable in my hands initially, but after 3 hrs, the D90 felt just better. It could be a weight issue. I don't know why.So bye bye to my wonderful D50. Hello to D90.Further edit:After a few weeks, it is clear Active D lighting works wonder. It lights up details which are lost when using a Canon 5D without post-processing. I would buy it again just for that. The custom FUNC is also a welcome addition. I set it to open my favorite menus making everything fast. I used to use flash whenever indoor. You don't need to do that in most cases anymore. I shot Halloween at Hollywood Blvd, pictures have good color and exposure using available light. It was unimageable with the D50.Good shooting!

I had a huge problem by ordering my Nikon D90 to another website "X" , that supposedly are great with costumer service. I always buy my stuff thru Amazon but I really don't know why I didn't consider Amazon as my first choice as a source of purchase for this product. I had several problems website "X". I was so angry already because the day the product suppose to arrive its the day that I had discovered that my order was cancel. Then I rapidly accessed Amazon.com and I found the camera cheaper and it got to me the exact next day without any worries. The product was intact and as good as I was about to buy it on a nearby store (in the same box and everything". So for you that are looking to have this camera faster and cheaper (and without any worries of security and all) use Amazon.com. As the product per-se Nikon D90 is one of the best inversions on an electronically device that I ever have done... If you are an amateur or professional photographer in your intermediate level, that is looking for that next step, Nikon D90 its the camera for you... So dont think twice on order it.

I have traded in my D40 for a D90. I loved the D40 and the D90 is even more awesome and easy to use. I bought the body only as my D40 lenses (of which I have many) also fit the D90. This is a real strong sell point for the Nikon Cameras overall. The viewing screen is larger, you can edit and crop pictures while still in the camera, and fix red eye. My photos I have been told look professional. I used my D40 for a trip to Glacier National Park and to Canada to the Ice Fields although my pictures where outstanding I think my D90 would have done even a better job. For the money the D90 is a winner hands down. Just love it. I let my neighbor (who has a D40) borrow the D90 and she was very impressed and is thinking of purchasing the D90.

I'm a long time Canon shooter, about 20 years actually. I decided to go "to the dark side" a few months ago due to ongoing quality control problems w/ Canon. I recently purchased a D300, D90, Sigma 150 macro, Nikon 16-85 VR and Nikon 70-300 VR to replace my Canon 1D Mark II, 40D and assorted lenses. The D300 is by far the best camera I think I've ever used and the D90 is almost as good. While the D90 doesn't have the weather sealed build or AF system of the D300, it is still built very well and also has a nice accurate AF system. I'd say the D90 offers 80% of what the D300 does at a much better price point for most people. Even the kit lens for the D90 is better than I expected, though I do wish it had a metal mount instead of plastic. Nice job Nikon. The only thing I miss from the Canon line-up is their pro-quality F4L lineup (17-40, 24-105, 70-200) but the above mentioned Nikon consumer glass comes very very close to the quality of the Canon pro glass at a fraction of the cost so I'm not complaining.I ordered both bodies and my lenses from Amazon. All were shipped very quickly even though I chose the free super-saver shipping. I've had problems w/ Amazon's warehouse shipping expensive camera gear in big boxes w/ little or no padding in the past and have returned several items shipped to me like that. I'm happy to say the last 3 or 4 things I've ordered from Amazon have come pretty well packaged which means they are paying attention to customer comments and feedback. The D90 I just received was in a big box but had plenty of bubble to keep it safe and secure during transport. Well done Amazon.

A lot's been said on the technical side and the rest of the story. I'll keep mine short...- Am I happy with the product? - VERY!- Any Complaints? - Average Kit lens. Plastic mount. - DUST on the sensor!!! Brand New out of the box!! [removed with careful use of the blower and activation of "Sensor cleaning at Start up and Shut Down" - NO more dust problem. I do swap lenses once in a while. - Lack of auto focus during Video is a bit of a bummer but then this is a still camera - HD video is more like a freebee......Conclusion:Great Buy!Am very happy with the HD video feature.....even though in a rather primitive implementation stage .....the range of lenses offers some very interesting and unique Video possibilities!!

After using my Nikon D70 for the past 5 years to take thousands of great photos I am amazed at the improvement in the quality of the images I am producing with the D90.Using the same lens I am getting much more detail and less noise in low light situations. I wish I would have made this upgrade a year ago. Highly recommended

I've been a Canon owner for years and this is my first Nikon. The D90's look and feel is super. The kit lens is a very versatile lens producing good photos. I purchased the Nikkor 70-300mm with the camera to give me a wide margin of focal lengths for closeup and nature shots. I like them all. I think I'll even use the HD video feature which I've never done before. Very high quality.

Since I have gotten this camera I have shot 3000 pics. Thats how you get the priceless shots is by shooting, shooting shooting. I paired mine with a 8 gig card. Think that is about right. gets about 1400 jpg files. Much less if you shoot RAW.Just an amateur shooter but have gotten some very nice pics. Video mode is not quite as useful as I had hopped, but I know that it was not a replacement for a video camera. After learning the basics, I am learning 1 feature at a time. I love being able to take 4.5 pics per sec. Wonderful for capturing non-flash action. Flash slows it down considerably. Battery life, no complaints. has been great. Nikon Software is not bad either.Would have gotten 5 stars except for the cons below.Cons: Have gotten a few errors, had to drop the battery and reset the lens. Apparently the lens contacts are sometimes flaky. Re-seating the lens does the trick. And has not done it for quite awhile. Think exercising the lens on the body occasionally is good for it. Video limitations as seen on other reviews.

I will not put down cannon's, but I have owned 6 Nikons and they "feel" better, the buttons are where you need them. For a very complex camera its functions are fairly intuitive. It allows me to take pictures that are better than I could ever have take before. Whenever I pick up my camera there is the knowledge that I can take a photo and expand it to the size of a poster and it will still look professional. It is difficult to believe the details this camera brings out. Before you buy go to a camera shop and feel all the cameras you can. Most of the features in this camera came from the Nikon D300.***Now I have owned this camera for >4 years. Have never felt the need to upgrade. I am a serious amateur but have shot several weddings for friends. Love this old work horse camera. Only problem is it's size. Now looking for top of line point and shoot to carry all of the time. Not pleased with either the Nikons or Cannons. I am probably expecting too much. If you get a D90, AND learn it. Don't form opinions within first month or so use it for 500+shots, use all its features and I believe you will love it as much as I do.

I just bought a new Nikon D-90 SLR Digital Camera from Amazon.com. This is the third Nikon SLR that I have owned in the past 8 years. My first two were the D-70 and the D-80. The D-90 has greatly surpassed my expectations in terms of technology improvements. Prior to purchasing the D-90, I always thought that the Canon Digital SLRs had a very slight advantage over the Nikons in terms of color hue and saturation. Not so any longer, the blues and greens produced by the D-90 are the best that I have ever seen with any camera and the subject pictures require very little if any final editing in terms of color appeal! And the clearity and sharpness of the pictures are amazing. It was well worth the extra money to upgrade from the D-80 to the D-90. I use the Nikon VR 18-200 mm lens and find that I now have the perfect one lens/camera solution for nearly all of my photography needs. I am extremely pleased with my new D-90 and strongly recommend it to anyone that is thinking about upgrading to the next level of photography.

I have used Nikon SLR's for 30 years with my last one being a F5. In recent years I've used a number of "point and shoot" digitals including the Nikon swivel bodied CoolPIX 950 and 4500. The way technology changes so quickly I couldn't see spending the money on a D3. When the D90 dropped to 799.00 I jumped on it. I'm taking pro quality photos again. The D90 is AWESOME! I just bought the body and am using the 35-70 2.8 and 80-200 2.8 lenses I use on my F5. The weight of the lens gives the D90 a feel similar to my F5. The more I use it the more I love it. What a great value!

This was a dream come true gift for my serious graphic arts son who has raved about the quality & versatility of this camera.We took it on vacation and I took a few photos myself and found it to be easy enough for me (who is use to a point & shoot type of camera) but the quality of the photos are incredible and you get so much more with this camera.My son has not stopped talking about this camera since he got it.I have to say that Amazon beat out all the other sites when it came to price...delivery and dependability. They made it very easy to make the final choice.

I've used Nikon products for nearly 40 years...stepping up to digital SLR about 5 years ago. One of the reasons I stayed with Nikon is the capability to use most of my 35 mm film/Nikon lenses with the digital body. The transition has been flawless.

I am not a pro photographer so my point of view comes from an enthusiast more then anything. I went from a coolpix to this because my other camera would wash the kids out in the snow and was slow. This camera is fast and sharp, it does video too but you have to manually focus it, but I didn't buy it for video. If you are looking for a camera with a ton of options and is easy to use this is it, also do the online tutorials on Nikons web site they really help understand all the options.

The Camera would have received a 5 star rating for everything else but one thing that ruins everything for me is the error that it comes up with very frequently and completely hangs.It's been 3 weeks with the camera with infrequent use and it has already frozen 5 times so far which required me to remove the battery to rest the same. I also own a Nikon N70 and my brother owns a Nikon D70 and they both have no issues. So it is surprising that I am now the owner of a product that is probably poorly constructed. I initially thought that it could be a software bug but it appear more like a manufacturing defect now.Nikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom LensUpdate 27th Oct, 2009: I will be receiving my replacement kit tomorrow. I am hoping that I will not have issues with the same. Fingers crossed.

As many other reviews confirm, this is a good digital camera. After buying mine, however, I was disappointed to find that Nikon provides very poor support to users who do any kind of software post-processing with their pictures.Nikon again changed the file format for this camera versus older models. As a result, most of the software you have probably won't work. Not only do you need the newest versions of Photoshop or Photoshop Elements if you're using Adobe products (ok, Nikon might argue that's Adobe's problem, but then, they provide no support to Adobe) - but wait, even your own Nikon software may not work at all! Neither the older Nikon Capture 4 photo editing software nor the relatively new Capture NX can read files shot with your D90! Nikon's technical support say there's nothing they can do about that and I should buy ($180) or upgrade ($100) to the newest version, Capture NX 2. In my case, all I'm using my Capture software for is to de-fisheye pictures taken with Nikon's 10.5mm lens, which worked well with my previous Nikon cameras. No more.I consider Nikon's attitude unacceptable and warn everyone that you may end up having to spend much more than you thought if you want to use your D90 as most people do!

I needed a replacement for my old D70s and after a lot of research including D300, D200 and comparable Canon cameras, I decided to go for the D90.It basically does everything the D300 does (I used the D300 from my father for awhile) for a much lower price and you get the lighter and smaller body as well.In term of sturdiness, it is on par with the D70s. It might not be as solid as semi-pro cameras (where they use magnesium alloy and seal everything to protect from rain/humidity/dust) but it feels very sturdy: it's build to last.Images quality is at least as good as D300 and much better than the D200.I didn't buy the kit because I already had a couple lenses and because the 18-105 VR is nothing special. It's better to invest in a good lens that you can resale later than buying a cheap one with plastic mount that nobody will ever want to buy from you. Remember that your camera won't be worth a penny in 3 years but your lens will still be worth 70-100% of today's new price.Better go for the nikkor 16-85 VR + 70-300 VR or nikkor 18-200 VR. The 18-50 2.8 from sigma is actually a very good lens (fast and small) as well for a very reasonable price.Bottom line, you can't go wrong with this camera and because of its small body, you won't hesitate to take it everywhere with you.

Extremely happy with the D90's capabilities. Chose this over the Canon 50D, based on feel of camera, kit lenses available, and price/features. Had been a long time Canon user, but didn't find it hard at all to switch brands.I was surprised at how often I'd take videos with the camera. I didn't expect to use it hardly at all (or once the novelty wore off), but there are many times when a quick video would capture the essence of what was going on, rather than a slew of shots and having this capability (with such great lenses) was great.The 18-105mm lens is a very good all around lens, with a good range. It has some vignetting at the extreme focal lengths and lowest f-stop, but very easy to clean up in post-processing. I later got a 70-300mm and that filled out the range (and that is an awesome lens).The only negative that I can think of, and it is not really the D90, is that with all thecapabilities of this camera comes complexity, which translates into a longer learning curve.

The camera died in just two months with "CHR" error message. I mailed it to Nikon service (B1/ card reader )and they were waiting for a "part". I called the customer service as we were going on a cruise vacation in 1 week. The customer service rep (Norman) was very helpful and since they could not get the part in time, they replaced the camera and sent it by UPS next day air. We are going on our vacation tomorrow with my D90!The picture quality is excellent. I hope this one has a better reliability.

I've bought this camera for a small start up. With minimum investment the Nikon D90 + Tokina 12-24 I was able to take professional real estate photography. If you are an real estate agent I recommend this camera to you.

I am amazed that this camera is gaining such good reviews here. The build and manufacturing quality are the shoddiest I have ever seen from Nikon. Mine is not an isolated case as any quick internet search will reveal, but my D90 simply does not work, never has properly, and Nikon does not care one iota.Finally, amongst the lens:camera join not working causing it not to be able actually to take pictures (rather fundamental and a common flaw) and various plasticky bits failing to function, the screen went on mine.A hugely expensive camera, less than 6 months old, and Nikon wanted to charge me Ł360 (426Euro) to repair it, simply because I had bought it whilst travelling. I'm not alone in living and working in different countries, and of all the qualities a camera should have - portability is amongst the most basic.The problem with Nikon is that once into their system, because of Nikor lenses, you are trapped there. My experienced advice is to buy something - anything - else and not get trapped in the first place.A once great brand that no longer cares about its customers and is no longer great.I couldn't be more disappointed.
