My camera started showing the dreaded "F- -" and "ERR" error messages 2 days after I received it. The only way to remove the error sign is to remove the battery. A quick internet search revealed that these errors are not rare. From what I gathered, apparently there is a problem at the camera/lens interface. The problem occurs at least once a day and it occurs with the 18-105 mm kit lens (haven't tried any other lenses). I am returning the camera for an exchange. Hopefully the new one will not have the same problem. Otherwise the camera IQ and user interface are great, though noise reduction is a tad bit overwrought.================Update==================12/7/10 Long overdue update. My initial review was posted under the D90 Nikon kit (18-105 mm lens) review site, but now it is appearing under the D90 body only review site. I exchanged the 18-105 mm lens and the "F - -" and "ERR" messages have almost dissapeared. They have occured only twice in almost a year. The camera is great and the price has gone down over time. My new rating is 4 stars. I still think that noise reduction is overplayed a bit. There are newer cameras out there that give it a run for its money, including some tantalizing ones from Pentax and some new updated models from Nikon itself.

Wow, what a nice camera to hold and use! I regularly shoot with a D700 and D3s, but when I picked this up for my wife, I had a hard time putting it down.Of course it wont be as good as those cameras for really low light or pro level shooting for sports, but it more than holds its own otherwise. You can get to just about anything from the buttons and menus, and the camera is really light and compact. Image quality is also very good.My wife is very pleased, and shes not the kind of person who is impressed by technology easily. For more technical folks... it has on demand grid lines, exposure comp can be changed by a button on the front, as can release mode (single, low, high) and AF node.If you shoot flash, the built in flash can be used in command mode to control speedlights. It also has a cool calendar view of pictures taken thats really handy.... wish the D700 and D3s had that.Very nice camera!

I know that there are others that have gone into great technical explanations on the merits of the D90 and what it has to offer compared to other cameras - so I am not going to repeat those. What I can say is that I am known for buying new cameras and always "upgrading" - usually in less than a year. I have owned the Nikon D40 and the D60 - both what I thought were great cameras . . . and then the D90 came along! It blows those two right out of the water - so much so that I gave the D40 and D60 to family members because once I owned the D90 - the other two seemed UNWORTHY :) I bought my original D90 in early January 2009. I recently purchased another D90 body. I just had to have a "spare!" It is the best camera that I have every owned and I don't even think of casting it aside for a newer model. It is a great price for what you get too! I highly recommend the Nikon D90 to anyone!

I got this camera(D-90)from Amazon at a most reasonable price and I just love it!It's everything that the reviews say about it and more. Ease of handling, many options to choose from, and right-on exposures automatically. You can set the camera yourself or let the auto modes do all the work and the pics come out great! I am very happy about my purchase and recommend this camera to anyone who loves great pics. I've heard some people complain about the movie mode and the live view and all I can say is the d-90 is GREAT, it's not perfect. All you need is a little time to get used to the new features and I'm sure you'll come to appreciate the camera as I do.

I may have been a Nikon Fanboy and didnt know it. I had a D90 for about a year and loved it. Had a 50mm, 18-200mm and that was all i really needed. The picture it took was amazing. Very clear and very sharp. But then I heard about the 7D and had to have the video features. Well the 7D is a very nice camera and I feel like the build quality is about the same between the two. People tell me the 7d is in a different league but I'm not sure about that. My Nikon was sharper. And I have had shots that I took the same exact shot with same exact settings between the two and I just feel like the D90 is sharper. I know i'm crazy.Video is not really comparable. 7D has amazing video 1080 thats all there is to it. The nikons video wasnt terrible. But you really couldnt move around much due to the jello effect and thats not there at all on the 7D.Hope that helped. Sorry if it didnt.

Having used Nikon's D40, D60, D70, D200 & D300, the purchase of a brand new D90 fell right into place. This camera is for the buyer who doesnt want the "entry level" restrictions of a D60, but can't afford the D300. I wouldn't even call it a compromise on buying a D300, it's the smarter buy for me, right in the middle.Image quality on this camera can be equal to, and sometimes it betters that of the D300 in my oppinion. It's smaller, lighter and CHEAPER. Consider purchasing a nice Nikon speedlight to compliment this camera after having saved $400 not getting the D300. In addition, a battery grip adds to the pro feel and look of this camera while making it take 3x more pictures on 1 charge so I'd also advise you to purchase one (check out the Opteka Battery Grip for the D89/D90 - it comes with 2 extra batteries and is cheaper than the Nikon brand, they work the same way!)The lens this camera comes with (18-105mm) is nice and you'll get good use out of it. Very good range, clean photos, just be careful not to bang it around too much the lens mount is plastic afterall.I'm not saying that the D300 isn't a sweet camera and if you can afford it, get it - you'll be happier in the end knowing you got something more expensive than your friend next door. But if/when you think like me, being on a smaller budget and wanting to do more with it (flash, grip, camera bag, tripod), not caring about bragging rights (D3x vs. D90 - wouldn't bother me if I know what I'm doing with the D90) and knowing that the photographer's skill is usually better than the camera's technology, you WILL want a D90.

I upgraded from a D60 (which I sold easily on Amazon's Marketplace)for two reasons. I wanted more control of functions and I wanted to have more lenses available with the autofocus functionality. This is a well designed and fully equipped camera. Easy to improve on it; just add good lenses. I suggest a good wide angle (8 or 10 mm, manual focus will work), a wide-angle zoom (suggestion: tamron, sigma or tokina in the 10-35 mm range) and a zoom such as the Nikon VR 55-200, plus a teleconverter (2X from Kenko) and you have the ability to shoot all kinds of pictures. A sigma 50 mm macro lens will allow for close up. About the camera: very easy to set up and extremely easy to operate; just read the small booklet to get started. Some variations to explore later are to set up the quality of image capture (regular or RAW, at different resolutions) and the ability to shoot single pictures or a sequence, with or without exposure bracketing. In brief a camera for people who know all these details or want to or care to learn.Picture quality is very good and handling, battery life and LCD images are very good. I had a great experience with D60 and expect similar dependability and reliability but will update this later.

The Nikon D90 kit with lens is excellent quality for the money, but beware, it has over 20 buttons to figure out. So the first time I used it, I just put it on automatic and hoped for the best. The shots were a little overexposed, so I read the manual. The next shots were underexposed. So you have to toy with it a bit to get it just right. Most of the buttons and settings you will never use. I have 3 friends that all use this camera, and get impressive professional results. The camera is weighty compared to say a Canon Powershot, and it's not going to fit into your pocket. But overall, this is an outstanding SLR camera.

Many people have bought the Nikon D90 thinking of it as a Hi-Def camcorder first and a camera second. However, if you want to be happy with the D90 it's better to think of it as a best in class APS sized sensor DLSR which happens to have a movie mode.(To explain that, most DSLR's have a sensor smaller than 35mm as sensors get more expensive the bigger they go. Nikons and Canons have one roughly the size of the 1990's era APS film cameras, hence the term. Several newer and more expensive DSLR's have sensors that are equal to 35mm.)The D90 has substantially better high ISO noise performance than it's predecessors, all the way to ISO 3200. From some test photos I've seen the D90 even outdoes the D300. It is fast, responsive, has the new generation LCD that is clear and easy to read. In general is in every way an improvement over the D200 I used previously except for the inability to meter with manual lenses. That is an issue for me, but probably not for most people. This shouldn't be confused with full frame sensor cameras like the D3, D3X, and D700. I have the D700 and the difference in performance is like a Corvette to a Mazda, the D700 also costs a few times as much. The movie mode, which got most of the excitement, is both amazing and disappointing. Amazing because if you own a lot of lenses suddenly you can do things that used to take a serious pro movie camera; such as truly wide angles, narrow depths of field, and very low light shooting. It's disappointing because it's nothing more than capturing the live preview. There's no settings to speak of, no external microphone pickup, and as many people have pointed out any motion causes the image to "wiggle" on the screen. This essentially makes it useless for handheld movies, which I bet a lot of people were planning on using it for.I also found a lot of gradient changes (shifting noticeably in steps from light to dark) if you pan around in areas with a lot of contrast, like looking from inside a house to outside the window, even on a cloudy day. You can program the AE-L button to freeze the exposure, and that does help a lot.Despite my misgivings the movie mode has a lot of potential, just it has to be treated like a "pro" movie camera; mounted on a tripod and having shots planned out carefully. As a camera, like I said it's the best APS class Nikon so far, I only wish it could meter with manual lenses.

I have had the D90 since February of 2010. I am very pleased at how good of pictures I can take so quickly. Ken Rockwell has a web site that has helped me understand the camera in simple terms and I am able to utilize so many more of the features. I must say the camera is very "smart" and takes the work out of the photography if you know some basics. It is an amazing computer in itself. I suggest going to the Ken Rockwell site and investing $5.00 and some time learning. You will not be disapointed in the purchase of the D90. The lens mount sometimes has a glitch but this seems to be corrected by taking the lens off and remounting it. Or you can grasp the lens and tighten it a small amount and the contacts connect. It is an issue if it would be a problem Nikon Inc. will make right.

I have been a serious amateur for more than 20 years, and a Nikon film user for most of that time. Until recently the quality of DSLRs just wasn't there, so I had been holding off on the digital transition. Let me say that I am absolutely amazed at this camera! It has transformed my photography in countless ways, due in no small part to its amazing high ISO capability. For a dad with two toddlers, this is a truly helpful capability for capturing fast action indoors.I highly recommend adding one of the excellent Nikon speedlights (I bought the SB600), because the latest i-TTL system is remarkable, as is the wireless operation. Unless you really need a full-frame sensor or a ruggedized body, this is THE camera body for serious amateurs. I would even choose this body over one of the pricier bodies if I were a pro shooting in a studio.Lastly, I also recommend getting the vertical grip. It gives you much more stability and grip area, as well as the ability to control AF function, shutter release, and command dial functions while holding in the vertical position.

I mostly taking pictures indoor with no flash, jpeg only. After 4 months of heavy usage, here are what I think about the D90.Pros:- Taking great looking pictures. Color is more accurate than Canon (and for those who like Canon color, D90 can be tuned to give that punchy color)- Great high ISO performance- AF assist light (Much better than Canon way of flashing your subject to death)- Menu is highly customizable- Most peope might not noticed that, but the in-camera chromatic aberration removal is very effectiveCons:- CCD comes with a price: hot pixels. The sensor developed hot pixels within the first 3 months. You need to send the camera to Nikon for remap or use software to remap. Some competitors are already doing that in-camera...- Supports from Nikon is lacking. Come on, still no firmware update?- Useless video (doesn't bother me at all)- Longing for more focus points- Not as good jpeg output as Canon. Canon is doing a much better job here- No AF micro adjustment. My 50mm prime is a little bit front focus. It would be nice to have this feature instead of sending the lens back

I am very happy with this kit. Finally a kit that has a lens with decent range. I upgraded from a D50 and have not looked back. Nikon hit the target for the mid-range, prosumer market with the D90. I am still learning the capabilities of this camera and am suprised every time I discover something new.The body is well built and has a great feel in the hand. The in-camera focus motor is quiet on my non G lenses. ISOs above 800 are very usable with low noise. Coming from the D50, the viewfinder is bright and bigger. Buttons are positioned well and reachable. LCD is ultra sharp and huge. The video is not quite there yet but I did not get this body for the video. I wanted the CMOS sensor EXPEED. However, done just right, no quick movements, tripod use and a steady zoom hand, you can make some nice clips. I did find Windows Media Player has problems with the Nikon Codec. It is jerky and stumbles on playback. Just use another player like Quicktime or VLC Player.Battery life is definately shorter on this body compared to the D50, but VR on the 18-105 adds to the battery drain.I am glad I skipped the D80. This is not a classic Nikon, "add and X or S to it", update. It is a full blown new release. I would reccomend this body to anyone looking for affordable Gen II color. For me the big selling point was the built in AF motor. I have older D lenses that will not AF on the D5000, D40, and D60 and I did not want to replace them with G lenses.Overall, solid body, built like a tank compared to the D50, very ergonomic and fast at most everything it does. I cannot scoff at the price since my only other option was the D300 for $600 more. The only thing I wish it had was the weather sealing that the D300 has. Besides that, I am totally happy with it.

I have owned a few digital cameras over the last 10 years. It is hard to directly compare, since the D90 is by far more expensive. However, it is worth every dollar. The features and picture quality are outstanding. My research of on-line reviews and professional opinions have panned out with my personal experience. If the cost is in your budget -- this is the camera. If it is a few Hundred more than your budget -- Spend the extra, don't compromise with something less for 20 perceent. If you are a novice or experienced and want the very best in picture quality this is the camera. I have only used the HD video once to sample, and it was as good as any cable TV HD. The D90 is capable (with the right size Memory) of taking 5 mins increments of HD video. For my use, this is more than sufficient, so I won't need a separate video camera. Connection to the TV is simple by connecting a mini HDMI to HDMI cable to a TV input for video play back or still slide show. I am glad I spent the extra 20 percent -- you will be also!!

This review is more of the purchase through Amazon.com than it is the Nikon product itself. I sensed the product was previously opened and repacked when I first received it. Nobody wants their new camera to have been used or even shipped to someone else. While Amazaon did say I could return the camera and receive another one, it was before Christmas and I didn't have a guarentee that I would receive it in time or even receive another one that was previously opened or even used as well. I have since found other items in the Nikon D90 box that confirmed my product was previously opened and used by someone else. Quite disappointing considering Amazon listed the product as new.The camera itself.....fantastic. I have waited some time for a digital SLR and have dealt with the slow instant digital cameras in the meantime. I had a Nikon 2020 previously and was awaiting the right product to purchase. I felt that the Nikon D90 was it and it hasn't disappointed. While perhaps the build quality isn't the same as my old 2020, it is still pretty solid. And I haven't dove into all of the features yet, but the speed and quality of just the Auto feature is fantastic and the lense is great as well.

First off, I would give this camera a high star review, and when I get the replacement body and play around with it I'm sure I'll do that. This review is for this body / lens combo. I gave it a 2 star review instead of 1 because the problem can be fixed usually by just twisting the lens a bit, but you still shouldn't have a problem like this with a new $1200 camera.I've read around online about many people having the f-- error with this camera and lens kit. Basically it has to do with the lens mounting contacts being sticky and not fitting into the body right. Well there are a lot of great reviews as well so I figured the chances of getting a camera and lens with this problem were low. I also figured that if it happened it would happen every now and then, and not be a big deal.Well I was wrong. On a 2 hour photo shoot yesterday it happened more than 20 times. It would happen in the middle of shooting, the camera would just refuse to take pictures. Sometimes it would fix itself when I would adjust the lens, other times I would have to turn the camera off and on and off and on. Sometimes it would error and wouldn't even turn off without removing the battery completely. This isn't just a minor error either. The camera won't let you take pictures when the f-- error is showing.Playing around with the camera for a few hours today yields even worse results. Almost every single time the camera is turned on it is in a state of aperture error. Formatting the memory card, like some sources tell you to do, doesn't help. The problem is the body and or the lens. Too bad I hate to pay to ship the camera back and wait for a replacement.Fortunately though I bought through amazon and I have prime. So when they get the camera back I'll have a new body and lens sent to me very quickly.I would recommend that if you want this camera you don't buy it with this 18-105mm lens kit. I've read around that this lens is usually the cause of all the problems. I'm going to buy the body Nikon D90 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera (Body Only) and the 18-55mm lens Nikon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S DX VR Nikkor Zoom Lens and the 55-200mm lens Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED IF AF-S DX VR Zoom Nikkor Lens separate.

There are not enough things I can say about how awesome this body is. From the screw drive to allow use of older AF lenses to all the crazy features that take creativity to the next level. Some of the buttons and options take a little getting used to before shooting on the fly becomes second nature but this is true of most products. This body coupled with the 35mm 1.8 is a perfect combo for most vacation pictures and landscape photography. This body has changed the entire way I shoot. I highly recommend this over other nikon bodies for beginners or people upgrading from the D40/D3000 bodies. However dont buy this for its video capability. If you want to shoot video get a video camera. the 24fps at 720p looks ok but it is a little choppy for my taste.BUY THIS BODY!
