I have owned Nikons since 1969 have had Nikon Ftn ,Nikkormat ,2002 6006 n8008,n90s , d70s, d80 , d200 d300 d90 and d700 . This one has been the worst of all ,its in the shop again for red specks on the sensor and the auto focus stopped working altogether . Then Nikon quotes me 211 bucks to fix the red specks and doesnt even mention the autofocus problem , this is this cameras second trip back to Nikon ? What happened to the legendary quality ?? we own 7 nikons and a dozen lenses , but Im looking at canon for the first time ever ,and nikon has yet to get me a correct quote ,let alone the camera back to me

I was so tired of junky point & shoot cameras! The batteries were always dead, and when they did work, they take too long to startup and the pictures were terrible to boot. I purchased the D90 because I wanted to best. Price is an indicator of quality, and you truly get what you pay for.The D90 is my first DSLR camera. I am a complete newbie and have no idea what it takes to make a good picture. I have been using it in auto-mode, and the pictures coming from it are stunning. I'm starting to learn the menus and other features, so far so good. Some of the high points of this camera are:*Excellent quality kit lens*Awesome 3" LCD screen*Excellent battery life*In-Camera picture editing*Quick button access to many functions without going through menus*Startup is *instant**Shooting is incredibly fast - ready for another shot almost instantly*Easy enough for a newbie, enough features for a pro. There are only a few negatives I can think of which are:*Big, heavy camera*Requires a commitment to learn the DSLR system*Auto focus in LiveView mode is too slow*No auto focus in movie mode*Makes you want to buy other stuff like tri-pods camera bags, and extra lenses :-)I spent a lot of time researching before deciding on the D90. The D90 is a bit spendy, but I think it's worth it. Buy the best the first time, and you won't have to upgrade later.

purchased almost a year ago and do range of outdoor shots from full sun to in the middle of the night and I have yet to be disappointed. Previous camera was Nikon film camera N65 which feels dinky and cheap compared to this one.I have banged it up a bit hiking too and have not had any issues. The quality is good enough I can see some faults with my old 70-300 mm lens (not a nikon lens). One thing i have not used is the video feature, but the live view works good when it is bright enough out. I never use it when i plan to do long night exposures out of habit so am not sure if the "job nr" will take care of any noise created from sensor heating due to having the LCD on.bythom DOT com has some excellent info on this and other Nikon cameras.

Bought this with a 18-200mm VR II nikkor (4/5 stars for that BTW) Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Nikkor Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon DX-Format Digital SLR Cameras and have not been disappointed in the least! For a DSLR, it has pretty easy controls. Once you familiarize yourself with the camera and the features you are good to go. Switching between modes and changing settings is a breeze. Pretty good retouch features too..

This camera has more features and capabilities than you will ever need! Fortunatley it takes great photos in automatic mode too! The 18-105 lens is useful for almost any situation. I also bought the 300 lens, but rarely use it. Before you buy a DSLR though, I suggest you consider how you will use it. My best photos are spontaneous pics taken with my Olympus Stylus 710 or Nikon Coolpix. I can always have one of these cameras with me, and can be taking pictures in an instant. The DSLRs are bulky and usually in the carrying case in the car or at home. It takes a few minutes to get it ready unless you already have it out on a picture-taking expedition. I always have one of the compacts with me, and the D90 nearby. While you are buying, I suggest you go ahead and get a good carrying case or backpack, basic UV filter to protect the lens, and a lens cleaning kit. Also suggest you go for the larger memory card...8G plus if you can.I almost went for the D5000 because it has some neat features not found on the D90, but at the end of the day I felt like the D90 was more robust, and had a better feel to it. I also considered the Canon TSi, but again felt the D90 was a better constructed camera. (the Canon lenses didn't seem to operate as smoothly or precisely as the Nikon's)I've had my D90 for a little over a month, have taken lots of great photos, and do not regret spending the extra $!

I am a serious amateur photographer. My last two cameras were already advanced compact cameras. The D90 is the first low-end professional SLR with exchangable lenses that I own. I bought the D90 along with a combination of Nikon lenses and a Nikon flash. But I want to concentrate in the camera: The D90 is smaller than the real professional ones but larger and heavier than any advanced compact. You get used to its weight tough, meaning, it is not unbearable. Take this from a 5'4" woman. Despite the additional weight, I like the camera's solid feeling. Although it delivers and it delivers well, buyers should know that it is a VERY complex little light-image computer in your hands. The menus are easy to work with and to remember; they are very logical. But there are plenty menus. I am still learning them as I learn more about digital photography in the classes I am taking. I use the Liveview but not as much as other people like to use it. The only thing I do miss is the flip off viewer of my compact cameras. I like to take pictures of my pets from the ground, and without a flip off viewer you cannot do this without laying on the groud yourself.I only buy lenses and flashes from Nikon because the camera works great with its own equipment. I have the 18-200 lens and I could not be happier with the results I get.If you are serious about moving to a bit higher level in your photography skills, this is a great camera and it could very well be the only camera you need. Cameras and lenses are expensive, so enthusiast photographers like me should pick carefully the items that actually need according to their skill level. I recommend the D90 without any reservation to serious amateur photographers.

I purchased the D90 for my wife in October of 2009. Since then, we've taken thousands of pictures and the camera has worked flawlessly every time. We are new to DSLR cameras and many of the photos have been taken using the automatic settings and they turn out great. With a little self education, the pictures got even better. The camera has always been reliable, the only problem we've ever encountered had to do with using a low grade memory card that wasn't on the list of approved cards by Nikon. If you are considering buying this camera, don't hesitate. The build quality is great, controls are easy to use, the kit lens is even decent. If you are looking for a DSLR in a decent price rang that will offer room to grow the D90 is an excellent choice.

If you want a DX sensor camera by Nikon, this is the model for you.For under $800 today (late April 2010) this camera is the best bang for the buck, less than half the price of the Nikon D300s and nearly as good a camera. The D90 is one of the odd items that is actually well worth more than the approximately $750 (body only) price. Without spending nearly twice that amount on the wonderful D300s, the D90 gives you nearly identical results. And if you're worried about price and considering the D300s, then the D90 is the right choice. If money is no object, D300s is better but not enough to warrant a credit card payment. The D90 is easy to use, and shares some of the features of the D40/D60 but one ups them with better picture quality and more control. I had a D60 and 80 percent of the time it wouldn't take a picture--that's down to about 1% with the D90 and 0 with my D300s. (I take a lot of macro shots and celestial/night images. Regular photographs are never a problem with any camera.)Would I buy it again? yes I would. Would I recommend it over say the D5000? Sure--its more of an inbetween camera (between consumer and pro) and I like that. This is the best value, today, for a Nikon DX format camera.

WOW...I'm not new to Digital SLR's and Digital photography and this camera is AWESOME. My previous SLR was a Nikon D-80 and I always got great comments from family and friends on my photos, but. this D-90 is very much a big step up. The live view for me is very useful especially in shooting group pix and outdoor scenery and buildings. It gives you a true perspective of what your picture will actually look like. Also, I wear glasses so the live view helps in framing shots too. The LCD is so bright, even in outdoor use. I have only had the camera with 18 x 105 mm lens for about a month, but I am totally impressed and highly recomend the Nikon D-90 to any class of photograper, you won't be disappointed. Ronnie B

graduated from TCU with an art degree back in 1989 and, although that was years ago, some things I learned never change. My photography professor at that time taught us about the differences in lenses, how finely they grind the glass for clarity in various brands, and how Nikon even makes the glass on their lenses better than competitors and we were shown, in depth, exactly what he meant and how cameras are manufactured. Because of everything else the Nikon can do, it was his top pick. I remembered that and, having experimented with many many cameras as an artist myself all this time, I found him to be correct.Fast forward to this year when I decided to update some of my skills with all the new toys on the market and took a new photography class another university where I became good friends with my new professor. This was also her favorite camera.So...even though I'd owned 4 Nikons and bought a d80 not long ago, the more I read about this one and the more I compared the differences not only in the other Nikons but the other cameras on the market to choose from, I bought myself a little present and all I can say is...WOW!It amazes me how the Nikons actually are becoming more and more lightweight and compact but are doing more at the same time.More importantly, this allows amateur photographers to easily enter the realm of the professionals with its ease of use, but to allow those who study photography to play with so many toys that they learn something new they can do every day.I will add that I called the Nikon help department when I had accidentally changed a setting without knowing it and needed help. They were great, fast, and stayed on the phone with me to answer any and all questions so that I was up to speed and my camera was as well.Even someone who has only operated a Poloroid camer before can pick this up and amaze themselves...but those who love photography will be, in my opinion, equally amazed.

-Its not expensive: With everyone waiting for the new replacement by nikon, the price of this superb camera is low for its quality.-Its versatile: Having an acceptable image at ISO 1600 gives you a good space to choose aperture and speed creatively.-Its rough made: When you hold it tight in your hand it doesn't crunches or bends in any way, its like a solid one-piece block.-Its easy to use: Everything is just in place, if you give the camera to someone who doesn't know about photography you will notice that his/her hands fall in the right places of the camera, having everything in reach.-Its quality made: If you buy a car with a leather interior today, it will still have a leather interior in 50 years, despite all other future cheap plastic cars having newer engines. Same for cameras: new sensors will come, but this will still be a solid camera with good ergonomics, in-body focus motor, pentaprism and a whole bunch of small details that make a difference.

After owning this camera a little over a year I got an "ERR" message. NOTHING worked to fix it, the camera was dead. This is a common problem on all the Nikon DSLRs and Nikon is aware but doesn't care. I called customer service and talked to a woman that spoke poor English. The bottom line is that after 1 year they won't fix anything for free, they won't even tell you how much the repair will be -- you have to send the camera in and they will then email you a price to fix it. It might be more expensive than the camera! They won't give you any averages, estimates, etc. Just send it in and if you've owned the camera 366 days, then you are paying full price for the repair (and 2-way shipping) even though it is a software error that is 100% Nikon's fault. What kind of customer service is this? A $1000 camera should not break when it is just a few years old! This was the worst experience I have ever had and I will never buy ANYTHING from Nikon again.

Great ease of use for someone who only knows auto settings, and manual is quite easy to learn if you don't know it already.Camera has substantial weight/bulk but not quite like some of the other models (Like the d300).Not sure what else to say about the product, it's the first Nikon I've owned and have loved it.

As many have done in looking for just the right camera, I read everything I could find and tried out a number of DSLRs over the course of several weeks. I had certain criteria that I needed in a camera: outstanding picture quality, good low light performance, comfortable to hold, large viewfinder, a versatile kit lens, ease of use and a price of about $1,000 or less (if possible). I quickly discovered that many of the entry level models lacked one or more of these features, but the D90 (for me anyways) had all of what I was looking for. The picture quality is terrific, even though I know a good photographer can take great pictures with a lesser camera, the D90 has many features that make those of us who aren't as good as a professional much easier to get good pictures. The low light performance is amazing. The grip is quite comfortable as is the viewfinder (particularly with my eyeglasses). The range of the kit lens (18-105)is very versatile and it's a great all around lens that is very sharp at both ends and not terribly heavy either. All this at the magic price of about $1,000 made the D90 and great choice for me.

I have owned this camera for 4 months now and am very happy with it so far. I am a first time DSLR owner and decided to buy this camera based on the customer review and consumer reports top rating. I haven't talked to anyone that says this is not a great camera. There is a lot to learn about this camera for first time SLR owners but after reading a few books on the features and options it's pretty easy to get the hang of. The LCD is nice and big on the back for image review, camera has a very nice feel to it in your had. Isn't very heavy until you put on a big lens (the lens it comes with is great.) However don't buy this camera because you think the HD video will be great to have. There is no auto focus and if you are shooting anything that is moving you will be disappointed. I have found that the only way to get good video with this camera is with the use of a tripod and to shoot relatively stationary subjects. Also I would recommend getting the 50mm 1.8d lens for shooting indoor portrait photography. Cheap lens (around $100) that produces great for indoor low light situations. I haven't found any downfall to buying this camera so far and don't expect to in the future. Photography is just a hobby however and wouldn't consider myself anywhere near an experienced photographer.

ProsThe same ISO capability of the D300.Intuitive layout that Nikon is famous forFast - focus, frames per second, and card accessFirst DSLR to have video, but . . .ConsVideo has poor audio quality and no AFKit lens is not worth what Nikon says it's worthRecommendation: Casual users who aren't concerned about how tough the kit lens is should buy now. Semi-pros who want a good lens might want to wait and just get the body (available about a month after the kit release)Before making the leap to the D90 I researched this and other cameras for several weeks. I actually wanted the more expensive D300 because of the magnesium body and weatherproofing, but ultimately decided that the $600 difference was too big for just that one issue. The D90 has the same sensor (or greatly similar depending on the source) as the D300 which means it shares the same great ISO capabilities. 1600 looks fine and you can definitely get usable small prints from even 3200. There are some reviewers on other sites claiming that the D90 has better noise reduction than the D300. Combine that with the the new Nikon VR lenses and you can shoot in low light at ridiculously slow shutter speeds. I've always hated using a flash and this camera is going to allow me to avoid using it in situations I never dreamed were possible. I took a shot in a dimly lit room at night and this camera picked up details I couldn't see with my own eyes! The control layout is superb. The single button choices make complete sense - ISO, image quality, white balance and previous shot are right there on the left side of the LCD.I did not buy this camera for its video function. However, Nikon did not deliver the goods here. You can buy a several year old Canon P&S S2 or S3 that shoots video (VHS/regular quality, not HD) at 30fps with stereo sound AND autofocus. If they could put that kind of functionality on a $200 camera it should be possible on a $1000 one as well. It just seems that if you're going to add a function like this it should have been done well or not done at all. If you're buying this camera because of its video capability then I would urge you to wait until Nikon or another DSLR maker does it right. Or just buy a separate HD video camera at a fraction of the cost of the D90.I realize a lot of folks like the kit lens, but it is not the same quality as Nikon's other zooms in this price range. I read that Nikon says this kit lens, the 18-105mm VR, would sell for $400. Thus the "$100 savings by buying the kit." I bought the Nikon 70-300mm VR at the same time for about $485 and the build quality is far better with a metal mount and rubber gasket to keep out the elements. The kit lens has a plastic mount with no rubber gasket and it just feels cheap in comparison. If you're just looking for a basic everyday lens as an average user this might not matter, but if you're an aspiring amateur/semi-pro this is really not acceptable.Overall this is a great camera and it is, minus the lack of weather proofing (which I can't expect at this price range anyway), exactly what I was looking for. It does have its flaws, however. Thus the 4 star rating instead of 5.

I am a long time Nikon user/fan but have held off spending the bucks for DSLR. I became interested in digital photography and using a Canon point/shoot have taken some decent pix but adjustments are cumbersome. My grandson shares my love of photography and has a D-90 so when I began looking he recommended it. After much research I bought the kit from Amazon and have not been disappointed.I also bought David Busch's users guide to make things easier and I recommend it. Controls are well laid out and within a few days I was able to set up for all kinds of shooting from indoor still life and portraits to outdoors and moving subjects. Being familiar with manual camera operation, I found the D-90 a snap to set up. The many preset auto settings cover most point and shoot situations quite well and I fine tune those as necessary. The kind of shooting I do suits the kit lens although I am able to use several of my older manual focus (Al)lenses. I do plan to get some faster single glass for portraits in low natural lightThis machine takes photos in places so dark that I can barely see the subject and using raw files allows for infinite adjustment of the pix. This is a lot of camera for the buck. Probably not for the average snapshot folks but for us non-pros who want control of the camera it is ideal. It's been 3 months and several hundred exposures and I'm very pleased.

After a couple of years of use I was starting to outgrow my Nikon D40. I was finding things like the number autofocus zones and shortage of on-camera controls limiting. Since I'd invested 18-200mm and 50 mm Nikon lenses and an SB-600 flash the obvious choice was to upgrade to another Nikon SLR. I considered the D5000 but I wanted the larger viewfinder and higher resolution screen on the D300 or D90. In the end I bought the D90. It has the same sensor as the D300, and capable of taking similar quality photos. The D90 is also lighter and cheaper, yet offers a lot of features I was looking for (function buttons, two control wheels, 11 focus sensors vs the 3 on the D40, etc.).I got the D90 the day before I left for a trip to Europe, so had little time to play with the camera (other than making sure it was working ok), and time to read the manual on the flight. That said, there wasn't much of a learning curve to get excellent photos out of the D90. This camera handles beautifully, with all the important functions falling easily to hand. I especially like the function button (I have it set to switch the viewfinder grid lines on-off). I also like the depth of view preview button. I'm also finding I constantly use the info on the top control panel (a feature missing on the D40).Conclusion: I'm delighted with the performance and features of the D90. The low light, high ISO performance is outstanding. The metering handles most lighting situations very well. Focussing is very fast and accurate. The D90 is capable of taking astonishingly good photos with minimal fuss or fiddling.

I have been steadily moving up in cameras and it was time to make the jump to a DSLR. This camera is a little on the pricey side for a first DSLR, but you wont regret it a bit. The images it produces are fantastic. I really enjoy low light photography, and I have been able to grab some really nice shots have pretty high ISO's even without a tripod (it's not easy, but the camera goes a long way to make it work if you can just hold steady.) The feature set is a bit overwhelming at first, but the great thing about the camera is that if you are coming from a point-n-shoot world, out of the box this camera has enough automation to make it possible to start taking good photos right away. I picked up enough from the quick start manual to be able to put the lens on and go. Everything is at your fingertips. The controls are laid out great and the menus are easy to navigate. This is my first Nikon and all the reviews I have read are true, Nikon puts together as much ease of use as they can into a very robust camera. The kit lens is what you would expect it to be. It handles most basic shooting needs. Again, this is my first DSLR, so it is perfect for general photography. I have been able to get some really nice close up shots and it can pull in good to get some great action shots of my son playing soccer. I have found, though, that I am going to need to start saving for a couple of additional specialty lens's to really do to telephoto and macro shots right, but if you are on a budget and/or need to grab just one lens to run with, the kit lens does a good enough job.The camera isn't too heavy and feels good in your hand. The liveview is pretty much worthless. Not really the camera's fault, just the nature of what has to happen for liveview to work. The focus lock is terribly slow, and the shutter lag is horrible. That being said, it is a DSLR, and if you are looking to get into that arena, just having the liveview is a nice "bonus" on the occasion that you might need to get a shot on a tripod that is set up higher or lower than your eye level. I give Nikon credit for including it.The icing on the cake is the ability to shoot HD video. A still and separate video camera really are needed to take shots of any serious nature. The right tool for the right job holds true. BUT, it is nice to be able to flip it over to liveview and start recording. When I am out taking stills, that's what I am doing, so the video camera stays home. If something happens that just screams for motion, it does the job very sufficiently. Again, don't toss your video equipment, and don't buy the camera based off of this feature. It's a great camera on it's own, the video capabilities are just extra fun on the side. You can't go wrong with this rig. I grabbed an 8gb SD card to give me plenty of room for RAW shooting and video, and getting it all through Amazon was a wonderful experience that I would highly recommend.
