Yup - I have the same, intermittent, and very annoying, issues with the "F--" error lockup of the camera, and also the poor autofocus. I bumped into a guy at my daughter's dance recital, and he was taking photos of his kid with the same camera. He said he was plagued by the same "F--" error.Not good. Our local camera shop looked puzzled when I mentioned this, and said that the contact on the lens mount should be cleaned with some alcohol. I have yet to try that.I am certainly not happy with these stability issues.

Picture quality poor with constant over-exposed appearance. I have to go into iPhoto or Photoshop CS3 to boost saturation, reduce exposure, and increase sharpness. Auto mode must seek slower shutter speeds for shots as there is constant subject movement blur even set at 320+ (yes, I know I can shoot in shutter priority mode, but I'm old and lazy). My D70 actually performs with better picture quality (although it now has to go back to Nikon for a recall because it won't read its CF cards periodically). The D90 went back to Nikon after 33 days as I received two errors: the blinking "F--" which means no CPU lens attached (although using the 18-105mm kit lens) and the auto focus cuts out periodically. According to Nikon, there is a communications problem between the lens and body. I'm not satisfied with Nikon's digital quality. I have three other film Nikons including a Nikonos; two Hasselblads; and a Linhof Kardan 4x5" and never had a problem with any. Thankfully, AAFES is replacing it even though past the 30 day grace period.Glad I didn't spring for a D300 or D3 ....Post Script: Returned the D90 kit to Nikon for replacement. Found out today Nikon intended for me to pay more for the replacement kit as there had been a price increase since the purchase. It took a while for AAFES to choke Nikon into understanding they can't keep a person's camera and ask for a price increase. Is Nikon the GM and Chrysler of the photographic community?Post Post Script: New D90 kit arrived today. Shutter opens very delayed from depressing release; stays open after the basic exposure: as in hangs up. Panning during an exposure at 1/500 sec results in VERY LONG, cute horizontal lines where the picture should be. Nikon Tech Spt says send it back for repairs ... after less than 3 hours in my possession. Two for two bad D90s out of a population of two. I have a query in to Nikon to find out what they intend to do to rectify this situation. I hope I'm wrong in expecting zero response and support from them. Wait out; we'll see what happens!

I love my new Nikon D90. It is not overly large and cumbersome so it is easy to take wherever you go. I had already owned a Nikon SLR camera so the lenses from this camera easily fit my DSLR which was a great savings. It is incredibly easy to take tons of pictures...download the good ones and delete the not so good ones. This camera also has a video option which I plan on using in the very near future. I am just a beginner photographer so I am really looking forward to trying out all the options this camera has to offer. So far it is very userfriendly and takes fantastic pictures. I am totally impressed and would definitely recommend this camera.

I splurged on this camera and spent more than I budgeted, but I'm happy I did. The D-90 is easy to use despite its many features, feels balanced and properly weighted, and is comfortable to use. The lens was a nice surprise - image quality is truly excellent. 3" LCD makes a difference. Have had it for over a year now and have no complaints but did find the lens limiting so I have added an 18-200mm VR wide angle zoom lens and am very pleased with it.

Nikon D90 is indeed a great product. I am new to the DSLR world, but decided to go for this make after reading several reviews from Amazon as well as other website ([...], etc)However, I would strongly recommend going to a store and getting a real feel for this product along with other DSLRs to make the best choice. The camera is extremely user friendly and after reading the manual for key functions you should be good. I used the 4 day thanksgiving holiday to explore this puppy!!From a beginners perspective I don't have much to share, but I did get a prime lens 35mm f/1.8 instead of the kit, since I wanted to exploit the full potential of D90 and not use it as merely a point and shoot. The results have been stunning and I just enjoy exploring and learning more about the capability of this camera on a daily basis. I am getting the 55-200mm VR lens to have a complete package for now!!I highly recommend this to anyone trying to venture into DSLR world. D90 has a lot more features than its predecessors including more mega pixels, faster speed, etc. Try sites like DP Review to see comparisons between D90 with D80, Canon, etc. Great product and an excellent opportunity to explore photography.

My wife and I decided to purchase the Nikon D90 as an upgrade from our little point and shoot camera. We were looking for better quality pictures and the ability to take pictures one after the other without a long wait time. We are casual users and not at all sophisticcated, and it is this group of users that I want to address. Though the Nikon D90 has many, many features and manual adjustments that are great for more sophisticated users, it also has the capacity to work superbly in its automatic modes. We have been extremely pleased with the increased quality of our pictures and have been motivated to take a an introductory class on digital photography at our local community college. This has been a tremendous help to us. I would also suggest that the casual user purchase a commercial D90 manual which are much easier to read then the one that comes with the camera. That said, on its automatic modes, we were able to begin using the D90 right out of the box. The basic controls are intuitive and easy to learn. I am also planning to purchase a Nikon SB400 SppedLight (flash attachment) with a Sto-Fen diffuser. Reviews of those products are available on Amazon and everyone raves about how they imporve your indoor flash pictures. So, if you are a casual user, don't be intimidated by the D90's many sophisticated features. You can grow into those if you choose, but it also takes really great pictures using its automatic modes.

This camera has been SO reliable. I love it and it produces professional quality images. TOTALLY worth it.The only CON about this camera that is ind of annoying is the there is no auto focus for the video camera.

Just go ahead and buy this camera if you are even thinking about it and wondering whether it will do what you want it to do. It seems to be a great combination of automatic features and advanced amateur/professional decisionmaking and far better than some others that I've seen.My only gripe is that the menus are a little cryptic or perhaps overloaded with information at times. But I've been adding some of my most frequent menu items to my own custom menu and that is helping quite a bit.The only other gripe that I have is that there it is so easy to take lots of photos "on the fly" that there are sometimes so many great photos to review it can take far longer than with a camera of lesser quality. As a professional photographer once told me, "film is cheap, memories are dear." Well, pixels are even cheaper.I have been a Nikon user since my first Nikon F borrowed from my father in 1973 and this is the first digital SLR that I've used after finally giving up film SLRs and having my fill of Nikon's various point-and-shoot digitals. It has been an absolute pleasure.Oh, one more thing to worry about. The camera is so easy to use and takes such great pictures that you will want to take it with you everywhere and use it all the time. After a while, your family will get annoyed that you keep taking photos of everything and they may threaten to toss you, and the camera, overboard. NOTE: This result may not happen to every user, but don't say you were not warned.

I purchased a Nikon D90 and received the Camera and 18-105 telephoto lens on December 23, 2010, and subsequently purchased an additional 70-300 telephoto lens and some filters and began taking pictures. The picture quality is excellent with either standard or fine quality and with the exception of taking a picture with too much backlight the quality of my 300 or so pictues are flawless. I usually set the shots to auto and let the camera do the work although the camera creates some great effects on aperature or shutter priority depending on focal depth or shutter speed sensitivity. I have used the camera for two months and will update with further comments as time goes on. In short it has been a great tool and will let you know how it performs over time. The D90 makes me look like an experienced photographer when I show my prints or view shots on my computer.

If you don't buy from amazon, be aware of the "gray market" products. Are very good, but don't have warranty directly with Nikon US.

I have used DSLRs before but this is the first one I bought and was not at all disappointed.It is the perfect camera to own as a first time SLR owner if you plan to use it often as it can autofocus with all the old Nikon lenses.The picture quality is excellent but I recommend trying a wide angle lens such as the Nikkor 10-24mm or the Tokina 11-16mm which will create a whole new experience as you can create art with pictures.If you consider yourself a semi-serious photographer who considers photos art and don't mind a lot more weight compared to any Point-and-shoot, the D90 is for you. It takes excellent photos and most importantly is laid out very sensibly and is easy to navigate around the menus, not to mention is very, very very fast compared to a point-and-shoot.If you just want to take snap shots with your friends and family and shoot on occasional trips you probably want a point-and-shoot or the Nikon D3000 or older entry level models which are smaller, lighter and cheaper while not sacrificing quality very much but slim on more advanced features.

Wow! Feels rock solid. First impression says it all. Debated between Canon T2i and 7D. First, T2i feels light, somewhat like a toy camera. The 7D feels solid but not worth the price.This is my first Nikon DSLR and it's here to stay. Go with Nikon 16-85mm lens and you won't be disappointed! Video at 720p is great as well. Overall, I glad I made the right decision.

I spent a long time looking for the best camera for me, reading the customer reviews, comparing the features. I found especially helpful reviews by a guy who cataloged his journey via video,... he had first got and criticized the D90, purchased another, and then returned to the D90.In my journey, i was ready to purchase a different Nikon camera, which was a little less costly, and weighted less. I decided to drop by a local store to FEEL the camera in my hands,.. and that helped me a lot,... the less costly and lighter camera (the new D5000), but it didn't feel as good to me. My fingers are long (for a girl:)) and the D90 clearly felt a lot better to me. That sealed my decision for the D90.I am enjoying getting to know how to use it (used the Magic Lantern Series guide, and Ken [...] which were both helpful). With so much flexibility comes lots of options and therefor necessary learning. From the physical film days, I understood SLR photography basics,... in the digital world it is just some much easier to get the shot you want, once you learn a few things about light balance and color balance adjustments.The only thing I wish it had were a built in GPS for geo-tagging. I see that one can be purchased, but it looks bulky and hear that start up time and battery drain can be factors with it,... and I just don't want to deal with that.Good luck out there.

This is my first DSLR Camera that I have ever owned and so far I am very happy with it. I am very much a beginner, but was told to move up to this one over the smaller dslr bodies and I am very happy I did. Very easy to use and customize the settings considering I haven't ever even taken a class, or even hardly read any of the manuals that came with it. I am just starting to buy other lenses for the camera to see how it works. The kit lens isn't bad, it's definitely worth the extra money to get it with the kit. Video isn't the best because of the manuel focus, but all of dslrs are like that anyway.

I bought this and then returned it. I like the movable viewing screen on the D5000 much better. Also the lens connection is plastic. My nephew bout the D90 and had to pay a fortune to get it repaired less thn 60 days later.As an aside. BE CAREFUL IF YOU BUY THIS THROUGH AMAZON. For two months they told me they had received and were processing my return. Then said it would be any day. 30 days later when I still had no credit I called again and they said they had no record of it being returned. It's 5 months later and I'm still out $1183 trying to correspond with mythical people.The problem is that Amazon only accepts emails through a form. And they don't copy you on the form. So you have no proof that they ever received what they sent you. Then they send you a response and you answer it, but get an automated form back that says they can't receive emails.A REAL HORROR STORY.

I have always been a follower of Nikon cameras. I made my first purchase of a Nikon FE in 1978 as a teenager. I then moved up to the Nikon F-3 Hp. After spending a few years evolving into the digital world by using cheaper digital point and shoot cameras and being afraid to spend a larger amount on a "real" Digital SLR I finally took the plunge. After reading reviews and doing other research I chose the Nikon D-90 with the 18-105mm VR Nikkor Lens. I was not disapointed! We have made leaps and bounds in the world of photography! It is everything I dreamed about in years past. The camera is easy to use and I continue to learn more each time I use it. Just expect to take great pictures right off the bat and continue in your creativity. The camera will not be what limits you in your artistic photography! Way to go Nikon!!

Where to start, this camera is amazing, it is very user friendly (after a brief review of the manual), very accessible because you don't have to access the menu every 2 seconds to change the seconds, simply use the turn dials on front and back, and the pictures are simply amazing. Even an amateur coming from a point and shoot can benefit 10 fold from this camera, simply amazing

Thought about waiting for the new Nikon's to come out, but the price dropped to $750 and couldn't resist. Glad I didn't. Had the D70 for 6 years now, but needed an upgrade. Twice the camera for 1/2 the price we paid for the D70. Can't beat it. HD movie mode is great, even the sound. Yeah AF would be nice in movie mode, but you can still manually focus on subjects just fine. All in all, great camera.

I am a serious amateur looking to learn, I am currently experimenting with speeds and all the features this camera allows; this camera its a beast, simply the best camera to take me up to very high levels as soon as I can. However there is one thing where the camera fails, and its video, when you are taking video by night and someone shoots a flash nearby, the electronic sensors don't know what to do and the image becomes badly corruptedNikon D90 DX 12.3MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR DX Nikkor Zoom Lens for a second. This only happens on video; thats kind of disappointing while the other thing, a minor glitch, is that the camera does not allow you to have an external microphone for video.Thats is it, other than that, the D90 is the best camera I could get and a dream come true. For stills this is the one to get.On a side note, I ordered it from amazon, but they made a mess with my order and were not able to deliver the full order, so I bought it from a local store. Amazon asked me to fax papers to prove my identity, on a rather painfull and clumspy process. I felt like jumping through quite a few loops and they were unable to deliver my order complete, oddly one of their partners send its part of the deal so I ended up without the camera but with a very nice 50mm lense. Even after they ackwoledged their mistake they gave me no satisfaction whatsoever. I promised not to buy here again. Mmm now this reminds me.... ciao guys.

Updated 2/16/10: More than 11,000 shots later! At ISO's above 800, a few dead pixels are evident against dark backgrounds, but this is something I'm fine living with. Overall I'm very pleased with the camera and always look forward to using it. Although possible, capturing good video is difficult and the quality is mediocre for shooting moving objects. However, it's GREAT to have in a pinch to capture the unexpected. And I like it's compatible with older d-type lenses without the AF motor. I shoot portraits/candids with Nikon's previous generation 85mm f/1.8 and love the results, which would be difficult to achieve without AF.----------------------------------------------------------Addendum 11/4/08: I'm in the process of exchanging my original D90 for a replacement. I noticed a dead pixel, which I'm reading is common, but I feel that for $1000, the sensor should perform at least as well as my 3-yr old Canon 8MP S80, which has yet to reveal any issues whatsoever... and that's after being dropped and brutalized by our toddler. Only time will tell if the replacement D90 performs any better.----------------------------------------------------------To be honest, the D90 is a bit expensive compared its competition, and had I started from scratch I might have opted for the Canon 450D or perhaps the 40D, both of which have slightly better image quality (the 450D being much cheaper). But as I determined 18 years ago when I purchased my fist 35mm SLR after high-school, I found that Nikons just seem engineered for those who desire function over form. In this regard you could compare Nikon and Canon to the PC and Mac. Canon's seem a bit too plastic and lightweight, with default image settings built to "wow" the customer right out of the box. That's great, but I sense Nikon has a bit more respect for their customers who want to do more than simply point-n-shoot, especially with a D-SLR.In addition to fit/finish/features, there's an important technical issue I considered. The crop factor is 1.6 on all amateur Canons DSLRs whereas it's 1.5 on all DX Nikons. At 1.5, my favorite wide zoom lens, the Nikkor 16-85 DX, equates to 24-127mm. Very wide with decent telephoto. Canon's closest lens is the 17-85mm zoom, which at first seems practically identical, but it has an equivalent wide-angle focal length of 27mm. Those missing 3mm are VERY noticeable (which is why you pay dearly for incremental millimeters of wide angle improvement on either platform). The D90 was a no-brainer (not mention I already had two good lenses and a flash unit).

I love this camera!!!! I upgraded from a Nikon D70 to the new D90. The D90 has a much larger and brighter LCD view screen that is great for viewing photos after you have taken the shot as well as for viewing in the "Live" mode such as when you are shooting video. I love the fact that this camera shoots HD video as well as photos. I found the quality of the video to be excellent. It is also very easy to use.About the only negative I can think of is the fact that when you are shooting in video mode, the auto focus doesn't work if you zoom in or out. If you zoom, you have to use manual focus control, which is something of a pain. However, I think I can overcome this by editing the video clips later in Photoshop Premiere or Corel Video Studio Pro.Altogether I am extremely pleased with this camera and it's performance. The selling point, for me, was the fact that it included the ability to shoot HD video. I am primarily a still photo photographer, but I found the ability to have HD video in the same camera I use for still photography to be the perfect solution for me. (If you shoot video as your primary mode, this may not be your cup of tea, however.) Video clips are limited to 5 minute clips, I think, based on the cameras manual. This is not a problem for me, however, since I shoot video in small clips anyway, and then edit the clips using video software. That may not work if you are looking for videos in larger than 5 minute segments.Several video resolution options are available, depending on your reason for shooting video. If you don't need HD video, lower resolutions may be selected on the cameras menu. This model uses SD memory cards, which have come down significantly in price recently. I purchased both an 8 Gig and a 16 Gig SD card, both of which give me plenty of memory for both still and video shooting.If you are looking for a quality camera to use primarily as a still photo camera, but want the ability to shoot video as well (with the 5 minute limitation), this would be an excellent choice. I love the camera!

This is my first Nikon camera and I have to say I am extremely impressed. If you're at all familiar with manual settings, you'll find the D90 to be extremely well laid out for making any change required on the fly. Once you get that down, there are many other layers of settings to tweak as well. I bought it with the Nikon 16-85mm VR lens. Picture quality has been outstanding. Only thing I have to complain about (and maybe it's adjustable in a menu that I haven't discovered yet) is that the file numbers will reset themselves when you format the memory card, thus the potential for duplicate file names when you download the pictures. But that's a very minor complaint. VERY highly recommended.
