Great camera. I still have a lot to learn but I just set it on automatic and go. Eventually I'll try all the new features but the pictures are great and the screen on the back of the camera gives you a great idea of how good your picture really is. I'm having a great time taking pictures and driving everyone crazy with Smile!

I just got this camera for Christmas '09. I wanted to use it for a few months before reviewing the product. Let me begin by saying I am a beginner with a camera of this size and capability. But, since Christmas, I have use the camera for every event instead of my little point and click. I have found that using the auto setting allows me to shoot very professional photos with the same ease as my Canon Sureshot. I have recently began using the more technical features of the camera and I'm getting ready to receive some instuctions from a professional. But overall I love this camera. The picture quality is amazing! I look forward to growing and learning all the ins and outs of this camera.

The Nikon D90 is the best camera I've ever owned. I currently own a D90 and D700. However, the ease of use, the portability and the utilitarian characteristics are amazing on the D90. The picture quality is equal to professional levels if you learn how to use this camera. I simply took pictures non-stop for six months and began to learn how to adjust settings. While I use the non-automatic settings you can get great pictures using the automatic settings as well despite what the books and critics say. I like nature photography and the fast setting has given me some great shots of birds in flight and animals on the run (horses, coyotes, deer, rabbits, etc). I recommend getting a Nikkor 70-300mm lens for telephoto and a Nikkor Micro 105mm for close-up work. You can use the 70mm-300mm without a tripod because it comes with vibration control. Very nice, indeed. With the 18mm-55mm lens that comes in the kit this is all the lens you will need to cover a wide range of shooting. I have photo's in galleries from this camera. I am a serious photographer and have read the manuals, books, and watched video's on this camera. I have also taken some courses on photography in general. While I use the D700 for some of my work I use my D90 for most of what I do. I highly recommend this camera to anyone.

I've had a religious conversion, a change in faith. All my life I've used a Canon. With the D 90, I've become a Nikon man. Not a conman, but an enthusiastic Nikonman. I've had it now for 10 months have have photographed with it under vastly different conditions in the US, Canada and the Middle East, from bright daylight, to extensive low light to glaring desert light, indoors, architectural subtleties and people photos, and it just comes up trumps each time. While an amateur can have fun with it, an advanced photographer can do more justice to this amazing camera. The thinking and action time is substantially faster if you get to learn the camera well. The manual contains everything of course, but you would do better to get one of the good books on D 90 that have become available. It will guide you through the priorities and make you enjoy the camera till it becomes second nature reflex. I don't think I will buy another camera for a long time. I've not been using the DVD as I have separate equipment for this. I stick to the basics and love it. Surprisingly, I found out during my travels, that there is a growing 'community' of like minded D90 users with whom you may share your experiences and communicate. Its kind of becoming a cult camera. That itself is a huge compliment to Nikon and the D90.

The Nikon D90 is my first DSLR. It was a budget buster for me so I did very extensive research.I found no other camera in it's class that received so many rave reviews from people I respect and mostly trust.So... after agonizing for months about spending over a grand, I finally made the plunge.I've only had it for 2 months and although I'm still learning how to properly use it, I absolutely love it.The picture quality is stunning, even for someone like me who has never used a DSLR before. When I first got it and was looking over the manual I was a bit overwhelmed and intimidated. There's a lot to learn! However, the auto modes and scene settings are there and they are as easy to use as any point and shoot.I mean, you can start taking great pictures immediately and learn the technical side at your own pace. At least that's what I've been doing.I've found a web site called the "Nikon D90 User's Guide" by Ken Rockwell and that's been a huge help. He explains in simple terms how to go beyond the auto settings and learn how to take great photos."Keep it simple" usually works best for me and many thanks to Ken for his well written guidance and valuable tips. One reason I chose the D 90 over other brands was that it was supposed to take low noise photos in low light situations. It has not disappointed me in that. It's easy to turn off the flash and if you have a steady hand (with the help of the vibration reduction lens) the results are excellent. Some people may find the D90 to be too heavy but I don't. Using the camera neck strap and supporting it with one hand, I've walked with it for hours. It feels solid and like it's made with quality, which makes a little extra weight worth it.If you love photography and want to step up to the next level, I think you'll be quite happy with the D90.

I'll admit up-front that I have only spent one day shooting with the D90 and have upgraded from a Nikon D70. The D70 was a great ~$1000 camera which I bought immediately upon its release. My photography improved dramatically with that camera and I had little motivation to invest in a new camera body. That complacency lasted until I heard about the D90. I wanted to explore HD video recording using my collection of Nikon lenses. I also wanted to increase my ISO to 3200 for night photography. Also, my D70 was having difficulty recognizing memory cards, so it was time for a replacement. The best way I can describe my upgrade experience is that using the D90 after three years with my D70 was like switching from a monochrome nokia phone to an iPhone. This camera is packed with useful features. The high-resolution screen on the back allows for impressive zooms that can verify in the field beyond doubt if you got the detail you wanted in your picture. It's got in-camera organization of your images however you want. You can store them to different folders on the memory card, sort them by date, and even have the camera record every image in RAW and JPEG.Most everything is pretty much in place between the two cameras. Adapting to the D90 is fairly intuitive, but there are several display fields that I have to look up in the manual because I don't know what they're referring to. The interface is so intuitive, it also contributes to the iPhone analogy I made earlier. This is a well-thought-out device. You can see the years of product research that have been invested to making the user experience rich within the D90. Doesn't make sense why they chose Ashton Kutcher to be their spokesmodel. If you're considering this camera, I'd assume you're already well enough versed in the world of photography that the following recommendations are of little value. I provide them for someone who might be considering a significant upgrade in their camera kit from a point-and-shoot.Here are some other products that go with the D90 like milk & cookies:Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash for Nikon Digital SLR Cameras (most people don't need the SB800- this one is excellent)Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF Nikkor Lens for Nikon Digital SLR CamerasNikon Zoom-Nikkor - Telephoto zoom lens - 70 mm - 210 mm - f/4.5-5.6 Ai-S - Nikon F

I've been using my new D90 for a couple of weeks now. Got it to replace my D70s. It took a little bit of time to get used to the minor differences in the menus and button locations but everything was very straightforward and seemed to be well thought out.Things that I like:- Live View (surprisingly). Didn't really have this on my must have list but after using it to shoot low angle waterfall pictures without having to lay down in the mud to to see through the viewfinder, I was sold.- The LCD. Massive improvement from my D70s.- Recent Settings Menu. Really nice to be able to see the last few changes made. Helps to return the camera to my "normal" settings if I change something for a special shot.- Customizable Function Button.- 3D Autofocus. Limited use so far but seems greatly improved in keeping moving subject in focus compared to D70s.- Being able to actually use the pop up flash as a flash when shooting off camera in commander mode with an SB-800 as the remote, not just to control the remote flash.Things that could be improved:- Live View focus. Nice to be able to move the focus point anywhere on the screen but the focus is on the slow side.- Viewfinder Grid. Would be nice if there was a rule of thirds grid rather than dividing the screen in 1/4's.- File Naming and Number Sequence. Would be nice to be able to change the default file name and have the numbering go beyond 9999. This gets troublesome after you shoot your first 9999 pictures and start getting repeat names.- Wish it came with an HDMI cable not just the port to use one.A few minor "problems" listed above but other than that, I am extremely happy with my purchase and would recommend it to anyone.

I do not want to waste my time on this as it is WELL documented if you look, but I am another D90 OWNER that has the ERR message come up. BUYER BEWARE, NIKON should fix this issue, I will NEVER BUY NIKON AGAIN IF they do not address this, it was a lot of money for me, and I have a camera that is a dud. The last thing I saw on the screen was like an old TV, grey lines going all over it. GREAT camera otherwise, but like a Maserati that has an ignition problem, what the hell good is it? For all you Canon /Nikon squabblers YES I OWN ONE, and YES PROFESSIONALS have checked it out to find it broken too.

PeopleIf you love photography and if you think your are better than a beginner level or atleast know something about photography...Nikon D90 is your next step. This is all the good features packed in one camera...Nikon D90 is considered as the medium level camera but probably offers everything a camera should offer. I have heard my friends talking about their camera have around 15.1 mega pixels but 12 is more than enough. You can still blow the image to a big poster size without any distortion. It is slightly expensive but when you start taking pictures, it is totally worth it.I would recommend this camera to anyone who is passionate about photography and doesnt have a lot of money to spend on a professional camera....Lastly, I would recommend buying it from Amazon.com since they offer the best price in the current market.

I pretty much knew how good the D90 is before I got it, and it is everything I thought it would be. I got it as an upgrade from the Fuji S2Pro (a great camera 6 years ago, so good I didn't feel the need to upgrade until now.) I shoot in very low light a lot, and want to use available light when possible. This thing looks great at ISO3200! if you are shooting in low light, don't expect miracles from the camera, ditch the kit lens (it's great in good light or with a flash) get yourself a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8, and a Sigma 30mm 1.4 or the new Nikon 35mm 1.8. The next step up from this in low light shooting is to go FX format, a D700 or D3.

I love the Nikon D90 camera. This camera has a very good picture quality; the photos are clean cut, clear, and very easy to edit in Photoshop. My old lens are also compatible with this Nikon camera. It is also really easy to use, my 11 year old son loves using this camera and he always asks me to use it. I would recommend this camera to everybody.

I've had my D90 for three weeks and I love it more each day. The D90 has a fully automatic mode so I was able to take pictures as soon as I got the camera, but its advanced features will take some time to master. The picture quality is outstanding even at higher ISOs. The 18-105 VR lens is sharp and will do for quite some time. What I don't like as well: The included software isn't terrible, but isn't great either. The video mode is 720p with 24fps max which could easily have been 1080i at 30fps. Still, the video seems clear and smooth on my monitor. I don't have an HDTV to try it on.I would classify this as a camera for the serious hobbyist. It is feature-rich and very high quality, but it still has a learning curve.Overall, I love my D90 and would recommend it without reservation to anyone wanting more than a point and shoot snapshot camera.

I was considering mainly Nikon and Canon before buying my D90, here a summary of what I have learned:> Great color saturation> ISO performances really good (with few light you can get good pictures)> Great 3" display> East to use and for non professional use and when you want to share your camera with someone (eg in your family) which is not familiar with A, S, M mode, I found the scene mode quite useful and fast if you want to take e.g. a portraits of your kids playing etc. without having too much time to adjust your settings - the auto mode for example also automatically release the flash and activate it when needed> Video mode is not perfect due to non-autofocus but is better than nothing. I found it usefull during holidays having to take video of unexpected event... If you like to take video in a countinuous way don't count on your D90 but again is nice to have it> Compared to D300 I found the weight/size a significant advantage. I like to take a lot of picture especially when I'm on holiday and having your camera all day long with me - in my case - the lighter, the better :) - of course without compromizing too much the picture quality, which is not the case talking about D90 vs. D300. It is true that D300 has a more protected body but then don't forget that your lens (probably) are not protect as well...> Nikkor 18-105 is not the best in class in terms of quality (materials don't give you the feeling you have a solid/well built zoom) however considering the price, the image quality and the the zoom range I don't see it as a bad option, especially if you buy the kit. I know that the 24-70 f2.8 is much much better but the cost is higher than the full D90+18-105 kit. Coming back probably I would but the D90 body + 18-70 or 24-120... since I cannot come back in time I bought for +110 USD the fantastic 50mm 1.8 and the "extended" kit is great> Compared to Canon 50D I personally like more Nikon for the color saturation, 50D is a little bit more expensive, I think better body materials and faster fpsGlobally, I found this camera a really good product, with an adequate price and well situated vs. actual competitors.

I got this camera for my wife because she has an unexplored interest in photography, and she absolutely loves it. She went from not knowing the difference between iso and aperture to being able to fine tune the camera to get the image she wanted. The shots are far from perfect but they definitely have a beautiful professional look to them.I work in video and film production and so i have a great appreciation for the tremendous level of control the camera gives you. Huge iso/shutter ranges, it would be nice to have a quicker lens though. We have figured out a majority of the controls thanks to the easily accessible manual and quick manual and good old fashioned playing around. The best part we've found is that even without painstakingly setting manual settings the camera takes beautiful pictures on it's automatic settings. Our real gems up to this point have come from manual settings, but that just means we have lots of room to improve. An SDHC card is a good addition for quick read/write functionality. This is a fantastic camera to help the photography enthuisiast or professional to create stunning photos well above it's price.

Have had the camera now for 3 weeks and absolutely love it. A relative had the exact model and got several pictures that I missed with my regular point and shoot at a recent family event. Its easy to use, balanced in hand, and the pictures come out great. I'm really excited to get artistic and do some cool portraits with the kids, black and whites, etc.Only one problem occured, at a recent event where I had already taken about 100 pictures and several videos, when I turned it on nothing would come up, no buttons worked. Just flashed f--- on the screen. I gave it 10seconds and tried again and it worked after that. Maybe it was getting too hot.Anyway, its fun and easy to use. I'd buy another one, just have to do some research on forums to find out what that error was.

This camera is amazing. I am a graphic artist and moved up from a D70 which I loved, but wanted the extra pixels for the crop factor and larger print capability. The D90 boasts some great features, high and low ISO settings, active D-lighting, and a gorgeous 3" screen that makes my old D70 1.8" screen look like a postage stamp. Ok, so onto the most important thing; picture quality, outstanding is the only word that can be said, the colors are natural and vibrant in normal use, but with the vast array of tweaks that the D90 has, it can make any shooting condition look good. I recommend getting a third party reference guide like David Busch's Nikon D90 Guide to Digital SLR Photography or this Magic Lantern Guides: Nikon D90 which is small enough to keep in a camera bag. If you are looking for a D300 alternative the D90 is more than capable and a lot cheaper - Happy shooting!

I purchased the D90 as an upgrade to my Nikon D40x that I picked up in 2008. I wasn't concerned so much with the new features as with the fact that there is a focusing motor inside the D90 so it will now work with all my lenses including the Tokina 11-16mm, and the Nikon 50mm f/1.4. I've also found that the D90 is markedly better at shooting high-ISO, which is one area where the D40x faltered. I can now take relatively noise free pictures in very dim light up to approx. ISO 1600 with very little noticable grain, unless you're zooming into the image all the way.Great purchase...Nikon has done it again!

Coming from Canon point and shoot and seeing it's limitations, i finally decided to upgrade to dSLRs. I wanted an entry level camera at the same time will give me that room for me improve as i grow my photography skills. I narrowed my choice between Canon 50D and Nikon D90. Knowing that both are almost match with the 50D better on the spec sheet i went to a local camera shop and decide which one feels better in my hands. Being a Canon shooter it was hard for me to even look and try the Nikon but when i got my hands on the D90 everything changed. It felt better, not too big nor small, not too heavy or light and plasticy feel and it just feels better in my hands than the bulkier 50D. I really liked the control layout better, and the quick info button that i eventually remapped to my quick menu which enables me to change AF modes quickly and easily. The pictures are just amazing and i could switch between different picture controls i've set for people (nice skin tones) and to things (saturated, popping colors). The 4.3 fps or so speed is just perfect to capture my 1year old son and the 18-105 kit lens was just perfect zoom range for my needs. Again not too heavy. I also have 70-300VR lens for some telephoto shots. I've had my D90 now for almost 3 months and the new D5000 and Canon T1i that have come out and if i would have to redo it again i'd still go with the D90. The HD 720p video is ok and a nice to have feature for some quick video clips of my kids. Overall, this is a very nice and more than capable dSLR and is right in the sweet spot of beginner (D40, D5000) to pro cameras (D700 and even D3).

I was torn between getting a D300 and a D90 but after thinking about it thoroughly, why would I want to buy a camera that came out a couple of years ago and costs $400 more? I upgraded to the D90 from my D40 because I wanted the sub-command dial as well as the extra features with the D90 (commander mode, bracketing, ability to use non AF-S lenses...). I love the camera and with the extra money I saved I was able to get two lenses and a battery grip all for less than for the D300 body and grip. Great camera!

We are wedding and portrait photographers that wanted two identical camera bodies for weddings. I had a choice of a few more pro lenses or (2) D300's to replace our D70's. Last year we photographed 16 weddings and over 100 on-location portrait sessions with them and they have performed flawlessly. Low light of certain venues or churches are where the D90 shines. Still playing with video and I can't compare it to others but it seems to work well in creating fusion videos that our clients love. This year we are upgrading to D700's but from my perspective save your money buying D300's and buy good glass. The D90's Rock.

This camera is fantastic for wide range of still shots. However, it took me a long time and lots of investigating to understand why all the videos I shot were out of focus. It's because there is NO autofocus in the video mode. This is NOT described anywhere in my user's manual. Buyer beware!!!! There are ways around this if you have enough light and a subject that stays the same distance from the camera, but I find using the LCD to confirm focus manually is very difficult. Even when I preset the focus before turning on liveview, I am not confident looking at the LCD that it is really in focus. Any point and shoot camera with a video feature will do better for quick little videos than the D90. (We have 2 such cameras in the house that are foolproof and they aren't even video cameras).

I'd been eyeing the D80 for quite some time, but knew that Nikon had to be coming out with an upgrade after seeing the D300 come out. So, I waited......and this camera was worth the wait! It's amazing! It's easy to use, feels solid and well-built in your hands. The controls are well-placed and intuitive. The picture quality is amazing, color is spot-on (hardly do I ever have to do post color correction). This is my first Digital SLR and I must say again, it was worth the wait. With two small children, my point-and-shoot just never quite captured the moment. I would always catch my son mid-blink or looking away just after I got his attention. No more! The shutter speed on this is excellent and the 4.5 fps high-speed continuos mode is great for children when you never know which moment they may look at the camera. If you've been waiting to enter the Digital SLR market, this is the perfect pro-sumer camera to get you started. Great auto controls for the beginner and advanced controls when you are ready to take full control. The HD movie mode is ok, but that's not why I bought this camera. That is just icing on the cake. The only downside is no autofocus. So, it's really only good for subjects that remain at the same distance and aren't moving too much. I have a 7-month old daughter who is not yet mobile, so it's great for videos of her. Although, I use my Canon SD870 point-and-shoot for most other movie needs.Don't bother with the D40, D40x or D60, spend the extra couple of hundred bucks and go with this one. This is essentially the D300 for less money. I opted to not go with the kit lens after reading reviews of the 18-105mm. Instead, I went with the 18-200mm VR lens which is the perfect single-lens solution. It's wide enough that you can barely tell the difference between it and the 16-85mm and the 200mm reach allows you to get supercloseups from a great distance. So, far it's my only lens. For landscape shots, I might eventually spring for the 12-24mm.Three words sum up this camera:1.) Awesome!2.) Awesome!3.) AwesomeYou won't be disappointed.

So, I upgraded from a D70s and was originally considering upgrading to the D300, but changed my mind when I saw the D90. For an average enthusiast the D90 offers very similar quality as the D300 plus the ability to shoot live video in HD. Sure you won't have the ability to shoot up to 6 fps and the better build (albeit heavier) body of the D300, but for $600 cheaper I couldn't justify the D300 over the D90.The biggest noticeable difference for me was the huge LCD screen and how clear and crisp the pictures look. Previously, on the D70s I had to zoom in to check my pictures after each shot but the new LCD screen is magnificent! I think I read somewhere the resolution on the LCD is equivalent to hd, but i'm not positive.Picture quality is great. I did not run any technical tests as I would I have no idea how to do them or interpret the results but based on my unscientific "eyeball" tests, the quality is great. I took indoor portrait shots with the ISO cranked up to 3200 and they still came out good. This is important to me as I take a lot of indoor shots. I also like the ability to create custom picture quality settings so I can easily/quickly access them to create the effect I want (i.e. vivid, etc).In camera editing. Sure its gimmicky, but its kinda neat as you could quickly convert your pictures to black and white, straighten the picture, or create a "fisheye" effect.Video is a nice feature to have. I don't ever see the need to take a picture in the "live view" function, but having the option to take hd video is nice. Like most people have mentioned, it takes a while to focus while in live view and it won't autofocus while you are recording. Also make sure to use a VR lens as I tried to shoot without one and the difference is noticeable. Another thing to note about video: if you plan on connecting this camera to the TV to watch videos, make sure you realize that the input into the camera is a "mini hdmi" input, not the traditional hdmi input. This shouldn't be a problem as you can find an adapter for under $10, but something to be aware of.The only other minor con I can think of is that this camera uses SD cards compared to the D70s which used CF cards so it was a pain having to get rid of all my old CF cards and buying new SDHC cards.Overall, this is a great camera and a great value as you get a lot of the things from the D300 at a much lower cost as well as the ability to shoot HD video. The picture quality is great and the additional settings/menus make this a great camera.
