I haven't had this camera for long, but as of right now:Pros: Takes great pictures, the color is very true to real life color. Human & fur kid subjects are so detailed in the pictures & show every whisker, hair, e.g. - - really outstanding.Cons: I hate that you can only use a battery pack with this, because the charge doesn't seem to last long for me (like 2 hours is all I get). You can only use a Nikon battery pack because it has a chip inside that communicates with the camera; had I known this, I would have not purchased this camera, because the charge doesn't last long enough, & I don't like being pushed into buying their expensive battery only! I prefer regular batteries or rechargeable ones. The powerex rechargeable batteries I used in my canon power shot always lasted for about 2 weeks if not longer with taking pictures almost every day. I recommend going ahead & buying another battery pack to use while the other charges, or when you’re out on vacation or any other activities you may want pictures of.

This is my first DSLR. I have had it for more than a year now, and it works well for me. I am an amateur photographer. I have taken some great photos with it, and the images are great. I can't talk about technical aspects, but I did get a 55-300mm lens as well, and its good to have the versatility.

Apesar de ter ficado um pouco triste pois a Nikon logo depois lançou a D3200 com recurso wi-fi, continuo a desfrutar minha camera que já se pagou pelos trabalhos fotograficos que já fiz com ela.Amazing camera, despite feel sick with Nikon because, few months later released the model D3200 with wi-fi option. Anyways, I loved my camera. I taked pics in my trip to Brasil and now living in Costa Rica working and some photos, my camera is already payed.

We bought this to take more/better pictures of all of the events we wanted to capture. This has been doing a great job. We brought it to Italy for pictures on the honeymoon and came back with some fantastic shots that turned into a photobook for family and friends to read.The supplied lens provides good versatility for all kinds of shots. The settings are pretty straight forward and most of the time we leave it on auto and it comes out looking great.Much improved over the typical smart phone photos that we took before this came along.

Pros:- Excellent pictures (duh)- great battery life (full day, 200+ shots)- light weight, lighter than the D5000Cons:These aren't necessarily negatives about the camera or kit, just more of general FYIs:- Short focal length lens. The 18-55 lens is common on most kits and works fine for indoor or wide-angle shots. However you'll quickly want to add a lens that will focus out beyond the 55mm capability. I purchased the 55-200 Nikon VR lens and am completely satisfied. http://amzn.to/11W1XPG- No SD card included. I purchased the Transcend 8GB class 10 card and so far it has worked flawlessly. http://amzn.to/19M7ixP- You'll need a camera bag/case. I would recommend skipping the Nikon starter bag as it is only useful if you intend to carry your camera kit like a briefcase. If you're going to be on the move, look into a camera backpack. The Nikon D3100 camera's body is light and beautifully finished. It has all the features I want and its lenses fit quickly and easily. Extra lenses, filters and tubes are available at inexpensive prices. The viewfinder and rear panel of the camera is very clear with all options visible. Certain features like auto-focus can be tuned on and off easily. For the price the Nikon D3100 is very reasonable and I love it. My order was expedited quickly and safely. I am very pleased with my purchase.

I have used Nikons for at least 20 years, film then digital. This is the first one that has failed me. First the auto focus stopped working, then it would not transfer pictures, now the settings are locked and cannot be changed. I updated the software, air cleaned the contacts, pressed reset a dozen times, removed and replaced the battery, on and on. Finally contacted Nikon who said it needs to be sent in for repair. But, mine is out of warranty now so I really doubt I will send it in.Checking the internet I find many people have problems with this model. It's too bad, while it worked I loved it.I really hope Nikon has not succumbed to profit over quality and mine was just a lemon, but too I urge people not to buy this model.

I'm in love. The Nikon D3100 has all the great functions and effects of an SLR camera that I love for an unbeatable price. It is not clunky or awkwardly heavy either which also makes it massively convenient. Best of all is the quality. I stress this because I got a refurbished version. Works like new and shoots like a beast. Fast shipping, will recommend to friends and do business again.

Bought this for my wife's birthday. Excellent entry level camera. Good pictures, decent number of options for entry level photography enthusiasts. The included lenses are ok, a better lens would really boost the performance. Take the savings you get on the camera and buy a better lens. You will be happy.

The basics--shooting and viewing photos--are simple...even my 6 year old grandson thinks he is mow a professional photographer! But the other features are awesome. I do not know what else anyone other than a true professional could possibly expect from this technologically advanced product.

Very disappointed with the Nikon D3100. I've had this camera for just 2 years, and while it takes great photos and is a great entry-level DSLR, I was heartbroken when it broke on me (specifically the shutter) at the very beginning of a 3-week trip to Asia. Having tried to fix it while on vacation, I read on various blogs that shutter issues are very common with this model. I would recommend doing some serious research before investing in this camera lest it becomes dead weight on a long trip.

I love this camera! It's my first DSLR, and it's all I was hoping for. The kit lens is a great intro lens, the camera is easy to use and Nikon's screen graphics are helpful and intuitive. It also includes lots of easy to use features with many smart modes, but also has all the manual modes that can be delved into once you get more serious with it. The quality is great, and I'll be using this camera for several years providing that Nikon has a great selection of lens that I can use on this camera.

This is my very first DSLR, and I'm in love with it. The photo quality is great, the menus are easily navigable, and it's just such an intuitive machine. Excellent build quality, shipped insanely quick. Absolutely no hiccups whatsoever. The only concern I have is that on the quick start paper, it says there is a lens hood included with the 18-55mm lens. I didn't see one in there.

Chose this camera as a gift, AS far as rating it, I cannot. It seemed to be a great choice from te reviews and the person who has received the camera, loves it and is so happy with it. It came in a reconditioned Nikon box, very well packed and shipped quickly.

I got a refurbished 3100 I arrived the battery charger was non functional. I looked closer and could see the case was slightly melted no wonder it did not work.I charged the battery at a friend's house and then started to use the camera. I was working fine takeing OK pics, not great but it is low end camera. Then It started... the auto focus would not function. I could get good picture with manual focus but the auto mode would hunt back and forth then stop at the worst point.I would stay way from this product, Nikon is not controlling their factory quality as they should. On line you can see they have major issues with the battery charger. The place I bought this camera from has many instock. Obviously the refurbed ones get passed though because of so many design problems.Stay away from this product.There there are so many good products in the APS-C to micro 4/3 sensors that will perform as good as or better than this camera and a resonable prices too..

Very possibly one of the worst camera's Ive ever owned. I had it for all of 3 days, used it for about 45 minutes and it just shut down. I tried re-charging the battery, it didnt work. I called Nikon and they refused to honor the warranty claiming the camera has been discontinued and is no longer supported.I returned it to where I bought it, and exchanged for another, only to meet the same exact problem. For the price, buy a Cannon

I bought the D3100 to replace my D-200 which had a glitch in its auto exposure logic and could no longer be repaired because of lack of parts support. I also own Cannon Power ShotSX260HS which I love for its compact size, light weight, sharp resolution, ease of use, and magnification power 20X. But it lacks the features of an SLR that I enjoyed with the Nikon D200, which originally cost over $2000, compared to under $500 for the D-3100. The performance is every bit as good as that of the D-200, and offers simpler, easier to use settings. I have not had a chance to use the D3100 much under variable conditions, but am very pleased so far for its lighter weight and compact size , higher megapixel count, ease of focusing and good sharp pictures.

Always wanted a good DLSR and got a great one at a great price. The settings wheel is easy to use and understand and helps take great pics in almost any setting. If I ever learn to set the settings manualy you can do that too. If you want to buy your first DLSR this the one!

Although I have some background in photography, this is my first DSLR. I bought the Nikon D3100 for its excellent combination of photographic features (all the manual settings, lens possibilities, etc.) and HD video. So far (and its only been about one month) I have been very pleased with both. The camera is extremely user-friendly, and the images are stunning (all faults are operator error, I would say). It will take awhile to "master" it, of course, but so far, I am extremely pleased with the results, including video. Regarding video, this camera shoots beautiful full 1080 HD, but the built-in mic is weak. For short cinematic features you will definitely need your own sound system (which you would use anyway if you were making short cinematic features, right?). Perhaps the most surprising thing about the camera is its weight. This is the lightest of the DSLRs that I've experimented with, and it fits in my hand well. For its price point and quality, I highly recommend this "introductory" level DSLR camera.

This was my first DSLR camera ever. I learned how to use it efficiently and take great pictures within a few days. It's not that great in lowlight but it it still a great camera and I highly recommend it. the picture quality is phenomenal and it's perfect for old and new DSLR owners.

Bought this camera a year ago, have had trouble with blurry pictures since the purchase. Tried reading many different discussion forums on the subject. It is not due to holding the camera improperly or expecting more from it, or dirty lens or sensor. I think I finally figured it out. I had to turn off auto-focus assist in the menu and also turn the switch on the lens to Manual. I'm not sure which one did it, but I'm leaving it alone. Maybe I got a bad camera, or maybe the auto focus assist is just crap on this thing, but if it's the latter, expect to be in manual focus mode for a clear picture. I know a professional photographer, and she said flat out that this camera is terrible. Again, mine could be defective. My Sony DSC H50 took amazing pictures, and I guess that I was expecting even better pics since stepping up to a DSLR camera....But no. I want another Sony, and when this one is old or I come into some money to make a camera a priority, I will be getting another Sony.

This camera is everything that I was hoping it would be when I first ordered it. It's held up good since I purchased it and I can't believe the naturally beautiful shots I've been able to take with it. I plan on buying a second one so I can convert one of the cameras into shooting purely infrared. I've managed to convince a few friends and family members to take a leap on this DSLR and they haven't regretted going through with it. If you're looking for a starter DSLR with an affordable price and great reliability, I think this is the camera for you! The battery life on the camera is pretty impressive as I've gotten days of use out of it before needing to recharge. The weight feels fine and I've felt comfortable taking it around with me in some physically demanding areas. And as I said before, I've been stunned by some of the shots I've been able to get with it.

The camera has many features and is easy to use, but a product that requires a SIM card for use should include one!!! Imagine the disappointment of opening a Christmas present that can't be used without making a trip to the store.
