I'm an amature photographer still coming to terms with SLR camera's, but I found this flash gun suited me right down to the ground. It is well made and works well for me. i would certainly recommend people to consider buying one.

I did a ton of research on the right camera in the price range before I bought this on tech sites and consumer reports. This camera comes very highly recommended so my expectations were set very high. This camera far exceeds my expectations!!! I upgraded from a 10 year old Pentax film SLR and it was a very easy adjustment. The features of this camera are very intuitive to use. I took this camera to Ireland on vacation a week or so after I got it, and was able to adjust all the manual settings I had gotten used to on my old camera without too much effort. I also find the automatic settings (auto, shutter, aperture, no-flash) to take very well balanced photos.I was concerned that I would regret not getting the VR lenses for image stability and to reduce blurring, however, I haven't had issues with this at all. I have gotten used to stabilizing though with my old camera, so maybe this is why I haven't noticed it.My only criticism of this package would be that there is no overlap in the lens' zoom. While traveling I found I had to switch lenses a lot because I would need to zoom in a little bit more than the 18-55mm, so would switch the lens out to 55-200mm, then 10 minutes later couldn't zoom out as far as I needed and would have to switch back to the 18-55mm. I think I just got used to having lenses that overlapped by about 30mm with the old camera, so got a little spoiled.

I bought this camera to take better pictures of my son on the soccer field. For that, I would give 10 stars. The bigger lens (55-200 mm) is great for sitting in the stands or at the end of the field and capturing individuals on the field while still capturing bigger field shots as well.The camera itself is fantastic. There are so many things I can do with it.I took a camera class so that I could use it like it's really made for - on the modes where it's not just a giant, expensive point and shoot camera. Turns out, the smaller lens (18-55mm) is pretty junky and I need to replace it (that's why I gave 4 stars). My teacher says this is pretty typical in these kinds of sets. But it just isn't fast enough inside. Outside, pictures are great. Inside, even with proper settings, it just doesn't work - weird coloring, blurry, etc. If it's on the automatic setting, it does ok inside. Outside: amazingly gorgeous photos.The battery lasts a good long time. I can easily get through a soccer game (so over an hour and I take a ton of pictures). It recharges quickly too.Overall great camera. I gave 4 stars because I have to buy a better lens for inside shots.

So I decided I wanted to get into digital photography and what I found from different sources is that the Nikon d3100 is an amazing beginner DSLR camera. I look on amazon and there were some okay used ones for $290.00 but for a $100.00 more I mine as well could have bought a new nikon d3100 off amazon. I looked for a couple nights and this one came up. $320.00 for this camera in which the description said 500 shots taken brand new camera. I couldn't believe it! God really looked out for me with this purchase because it was exactly what the description. When i got it it was wrapped up in like quadruple bubble wrap, came with everything that the description said, and the best part is it said I'd get it June 10th...I got it today April 23rd...:). So happy with this purchase and the company who sent the product I didn't have any complaints everything works out great. God Bless.

I got this for a Christmas present and I was extremely excited. I had wanted a Canon DSLR but I figured this was the next best thing. Unfortunately, for pictures I'd have been correct, but for videos I was wrong. First off, it is not very easy to focus this thing without the automatic focus on, and that doesn't focus my shots in the direct spot I want, but instead, only the center of the shot. Also, did I mention there's awful audio quality on this thing. Along with that, there is no microphone input so you kind of have to buy an external mike and use that and later sync the two together while editing.Now, when editing, syncing audio and video is a pain in the ass. The camera is not at all a bad camera, but if you were thinking about getting it for moderate or serious video, I advise against it.

It is easy to get tunnel vision with all these glowing reviews on Amazon. However, this camera really doesn't have any standout features. Its the same old technology that has been around for years. You are still going to have to wait a ton of time between shots, the burst mode is slow, and the burst mode does not support focusing between shots. The view finder is not going to actually show you the picture you are going to get since it is an optical viewfinder. And the viewfinder is going to black out when you actually take the shot. Sure, all these traditional SLR cameras take great pictures, but really, what camera at this price doesn't. What are you really looking for at this price point? For me, it is fast between shots and can burst fast so I am sure to get a great shot. I hate cameras that make me wait between shots until the camera is ready to take another picture.If you want the hidden gem in the SLR camera world, check out the Sony SLT technology. It is a new technology that is much faster and allows the viewfinder and focus mechanisms to function like they should. I have the SLT-A57 and I think you can tell from the reviews that it is as good or better than any of these SLR cameras.No, I don't work for Sony. I just think that someone should point out the fact that there are other options out there and better technology available.

This camera, of course, is targeted to those entering the DSLR world. I am myself just beginning to take the baby steps and I got a really good camera to get me started! This camera is amazing. The pictures are crisp, and I definitely love the "Guide" mode. The camera is light weight and not so big like other DSLR cameras. I agree that the lens that comes with the kit is not that amazing, but it does a decent job. I had to spend quite an amount of money for this camera, so the lens is going to wait just a bit. Overall however, this camera is great. If you're contemplating between the D3000 and D5000, DON'T. Get the D3100. Period...OK...gotta go take some night shots...man this camera rules...

Moved up from point and shoot to my first entry level dslr camera. I am sorry that I did not get the d3200 mainly for the mic input. But its a great camera. The body was bought separate and the lens that was purchased was the 18-105 dx lens. Still getting used to it as I have only had it for a month from this review. The few photos I have taken are of great quality. One main thing I am very happy about, is that I can do liveview from from my tv monitor. I read many reviews that said it can't be done, but I just bought the mini hdmi to normal hdmi cable and it worked like a charm. I intend to acquire the prime 35mm f1.8 dx lens, to improve my quality in low light situations. I also have the sb400 speed light so I am off to take thousands of photos.

I bought this camera for my wife after she did all the research (much of that here on Amazon) and from the recommendation of several friends. We are novice photographers but can say that so far we are both pleased with the performance. I've always leaned towards pocket point and shoots for the simple fact that I would carry them more often. But they were always hit or miss with regards to speed, image quality, etc. and have become somewhat superfluous as cell phone cameras have gotten better.Enter the D3100No way P&S or cell phone cameras could give us the shots we get for the D3100. Last weekend at our 4 year old's soccer game, that became even MORE glaringly obvious. I opted for the VR lens, but can't tell you if it makes a difference or not. Worst case is that I spent $100 extra if we don't like the VR and turn it off.I have no other SLR to compare it to (other than a 1980s Canon A1 that I used to use) so I can't say how it stacks up against other current offerings. All I can tell you is that if you think you want to step up to a SLR, this is a nice way to go. The body is not huge, you get 2 lenses that should handle 95%+ of all your needs and you get speed, and quality shots that are FAR better than P&S cameras we spent $300 on.I just got back from a trip to oregon and wished I had taken the SLR. Phone camera was great for shots durign bike rides, etc., but "coastal tourist" shots would have been much better with the 3100.

I have been in the market for a good beginner camera for quite some time. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, but I wanted to get a good quality camera on which to learn. After 3+ months, the 3100 has been the perfect choice for me. Though there are newer models available with lots of extra features, I find the 3100 to be all that I need it to be. It takes great photos, works with all of my technology, and gives me the tools I need to learn about taking photographs.Will I upgrade at some point? Certainly. But, for now, I'm very happy with the 3100 and would highly recommend it.

We bought this camera a few months ago to take pictures on our upcoming overseas trip. One day, suddenly, we see the Nikon LCD screen bleed. We send it in for repairs and they refused to honor the warranty. They said that because of 'IMPACT', we had to pay $160 to have it fixed. That was total BS because there was no way that camera had any impact with anything. It was working perfectly fine. The camera was stored in a heavy thick camera bag/back pack. Their customer service is a ripoff and came out with this made up excuse to get out of the warranty. There was an 'internal crack'! Yeah right! Instead of honoring the warranty, they opted to be cheap. Well guess what Nikon! This is the first and the last time I will ever purchase anything Nikon again! Never again! People! Beware! They refused to honor not only my warranty claim but the claim of at least three other people! Read the reviews with 1 star! You might think the camera has many 5 stars so it can't happen to you! But guess what! We thought the same thing as well. But this time, it happened to us. Their customer service is horrible. Do not buy Nikon because you will have to fork out another $160 at least for the repair work if the same thing happens to you (hope it doesn't)! They also take months and months to repair the camera! Tough luck for us. Nikon sucks! I can't believe a company like this can function in the USA.

I bought this camera 9 months ago to upgrade from my point and shoot. I had done months of research on what to buy and bought this one because of its price point and performance reviews. I'm very happy with my purchase. I've taken amazing pictures of my kids with the kit lens that come with this. I have learned how to shoot without auto and without flash which comes in handy because my kids hate flash. If I use it I only get pictures of stunned kids with their eyes closed. That being said I wish the low light performance was a little better. Now that it gets dark earlier in the day I'm struggling to get decent pics inside. Luckily most my pics are during the day because given the right lighting this camera works miracles.My favorite feature is the continuous shooting button. You are pretty much guaranteed a good pic with that! Now I'm researching how to take my photography to the next level with new lenses. I knocked down one star because I think I will grow past this camera in the next year and will want to upgrade. But I appreciate the learning process this camera walks you through.

I've had this package for about two years now. Since I am not a professional, I seriously doubt there will be anything I'll find lacking, save for extra lenses and such, in this buy. It takes extremely good pictures with me at the helm, and that's saying something, as this is my first SLR since my old Minolta XG-1. After that I "settled" on automatic cameras such as the pocket Olympus DLX-140 for my pictures. Over the years I again developed a yearning for experimentation and such and started looking for a DSLR for what is probably going to be my final camera. I found it with this model. The package with the extra 55-200mm VR DX lens has thus far been perfect for me. Air shows, boat races, cruises, and of course family pictures have produced excellent quality shots from this product. I can see extra large zoom lenses in my future as I delve into nature photography as well, but the camera will be wonderful, just as it has been for nearly 2 years. I paid nearly $700 then, and it 's just getting more attractive to today's buyers. They won't be disappointed.

First things first.... I am a Canon man. Always have been from the time I had my AE-1.But my son got this camera to take photos of his family, so I got to go over the basics of DSL photography with him, and I enjoyed using it. I had a small bit of a learning curve as the buttons and icons are different between the 2 brands, but it was nothing significant.The camera was easy to hold and carry, the kit lens was fast to focus. This model is being replaced by the D3200 so you may be able to find it on clearance.I have seen this setup on sale with a 70-300 lens in addition to the 18-55 lens. Neither of the lenses are what you would call "professional quality" lens, but for the average casual user, they are fine.

I've had a few digital camera's so far (not Nikon) and have had nothing but problems with them for whatever reason. This camera with the two SLR VR zoom lenses is nothing short of fantastic! There are tons of features on this camera that I will probably never use, but the flexibility is tremendous and the pictures are just simply crystal clear, wow!! It doesn't come with a flash memory card, so you will need to get one. It will handle anything up to 64GB, but I got the SanDisk Extreme Pro 32 GByte SDHC Class 10 UHS-1 95MB/s flash card and it not only has more than enough room but it also simply rips with speed!! So far, this is absolutely the best camera I've ever had....probably the last one I will ever need!!! You will love the range of these two lenses; from the zoom 18mm (fish-eye) to the normal view 55mm lens, and from the 55mm normal view to the 200mm telephoto lens that basically covers everything you need!! And, the VR (Vibration Reduction) versions of both lenses are a must to give you super clear pictures. Yes, this is a little expensive, but worth every penny....highly recommended for ANY type of photographer.

I got this one for a friend in one of my US trips. I tested for some days to make sure that everything was working. I don't know much about photography but I was impressed that only by using the automatic function and changing lenses I was still able to get really nice pictures. Great image quality. The one I got is second hand but it came with a nice case. I don't do photography for a living, so I wouldn't even think go get one for myself, it is too much volume, but my friend is really happy with it.

This is an amazing camera! You get a lot more camera than what you should expect for the money. I've always loved the D40, D40x, D60, and now the D3100. This is a very small, compact body, which is exactly what I need because I take it everywhere. Controls are will laid out, options are plentiful, and the in-camera editing has some very useful little features. If you're disappointed with this camera there is something wrong with you.

It offers the removable lens and quality photos while it isn't as advanced as many other SLR cameras. I felt comfortable right away in using it. I'm still figuring out some of the features, but I am already impressed and pleased with the purchase

I love it so far. Allows me to take great action shots. As I learn more about it and taking pictures I might like it more but I only give it 4 stars for one very important reason and to caution anyone looking to buy this. Consider the 70-300mm version instead of this one. I use this camera for gymnastics and the 300mm would have been better for me. If you were using this for outdoor sports 50mm would probably be minimum but having the ability to go up to 300mm with auto focus would be nicer too. It costs more but would probably be worth it. I'm going to take some classes then probably end up buying a high end lens $900 or more. As far as a camera body you probably don't need anything more and the lenses with this kit are really quite nice.

Decent camera BUT the USB data transfer poet is NOT a standard micro-USB connection, so you have to but the cable separately. Amazon, in it's infinite wisdom, gives you a free bag and a free memory card, but not the frigging cable. The system spec lists micro-USB, but does NOT mention the cable is proprietary. Just like Apple with chargers, you need a separate cable for everything, and Nikon gets another $8 from every camera....cheesy for a $500 product.When shooting multiple shots the buffer is often very slow. It will take 2-3 images, sometimes 4, then stop in the middle of the action you are trying to shoot.These issues aside, I feel that I got a pretty good deal for the money. The interface is relatively intuitive, and the capabilities and features are plentiful.

I am very amateur when it comes to photography. I'm starting to take it more seriously, and try to make it a hobby. Just using the auto this take great pictures. The scene modes do an even better for particular shots. I'm hoping to read more and learn more to be able to use all the programmable functions and maybe one day full manual mode. I'd highly recommend this for a beginner in DSLR's. I bought it at Target on clearance, and with another discount for a total of $250. Well worth it.

I love it, it looks brand new plus I saved a couple bucks, delivery was just right on time. I spent about two weeks learning about this camera so I was able to unravel and get everything set in a few minutes. I love it and quality of the camera is perfect for me. I do photography as a hobby not as a profession so I don't need the much more professional and expensive cameras, yeah!

I don't know much about cameras, this one was a Christmas gift for my daughter and she loves it. She's 16 and she's able to work all the different functions, and it does a LOT. I was told this would be a great starter camera for someone interested in professional photography and they were right. The pictures she takes are awesome. This thing really zooms in too. I was amazed at the things she showed me. I am very happy she is happy and I would recommend this camera for anyone interested in this type of camera from the novice to the more experienced.

Got mine as a christmas gift as I wanted to graduate to a DSLR after using point and shoot cameras for yeras.Yes this my first experience with a dslr and a good one.It is great for entry level people like me.Fairly easy to understand instructions and user friendly.The best part is that untill you get to know some of the real cool features the autofocus does qa super job.Indeed it is great value for money.

This is a our first DSLR and we purchased it for quasi commercial purposes. We are a small business and bought the camera to take pictures of our products for online sales as well as for personal use.We are extremely pleased with the camera for the price. The photo quality has been a huge step up from the point and shoot that we had been using (Stylus Tough). The camera body is light and compact. It's hard to take pictures if you don't have the camera with you, so size was a selling point for us.Battery life seems good. So far our limiting factor has been our card size not our battery life. This camera takes both JPEGs and Raw photos, so anyone moving into their first DSLR should be prepared to invest in some memory, the pictures are huge.This camera has been budget friendly for a new business. About 2 years ago we purchased a Stylus tough for only marginally less, and the resultant pictures were pretty lousy (in fact we usually opted to use our phones instead). So we have been quite pleased to see a slight step up in price resulted in a huge jump in quality and flexibility.We liked that this camera came with a lens (great for a first time buyer). We will likely be adding a 55-200 mm zoom lens in the next few months.Some of the downsides to the camera: the small size of the view finder, the low resolution in the lcd screen and that it is not weatherproofed.The weatherproofing is a bit of an issue, since we spend a lot of time on the water. Our next camera (likely a few years down the road) will be weatherproofed.

This is an expensive camera and is the first step to DSLR so take that for what it's worth. My wife was looking for a "good" camera not another pocket camera she wanted something she could take professional pictures with (family pictures) and shoot some Hockey, Soccer, Swimming events for the kids. This is a very good camera it is easy to use, not too heavy, and with the two lenses gives you a good range of shots you can get out of the box. So far it is what we expected and hopefully we will get a long time of use out of it (might have to get a third lens for some shots, but the 3100 body should last a few years).

I would like to start with the fact i bought this camera at a store, not online.I got it home and charged the battery right away because it is supposed to take 1.5hr to charge.After i got it all set up withe the lens and strap, i took a quick snapshot of my dog (american Eskimo) all whiteminiature husky for those unfamiliar with the breed.One look down at my display of the photo i just took and already my gut dropped.My dog was pink! So i thought maybe the factory settings are not what this camera needs.Keep in mind i did reset to factory settings once already to make sure the camera was notfiddled with before.After changing the iso, shooting mode, shutter speed even, nothing seemed to get rid of thisugly pink.I thought maybe, just maybe the pink was a type of "highlight" feature for over exposure or somethingso i took it to my ol pc to upload the photo on the screen... Again, i find myself with a gaze into myphoto of the pink dog.Long disappointment short, im headed back to the store to get my cash back and possible drop another 100 or soon a d3200, i'm upset with the model not the brand.Im sure its just a fault somewhere with color/shade software because it was turning only white into pink; but i hope this helps anyone make sure they have a good return/exchange program in place for this purchase.

Our family is very active. We play hockey, we run, we play soccer, we take vacations. This camera takes THE best photos. Whether it's an indoor hockey game or goofing around outside my photos are clear and sharp and gorgeous. It takes a day or so to get used to all the adjustments but I would highly recommend this one! For even better fast pictures (hockey, soccer, baseball, etc) there is another option for VR lenses. The VR lenses are even better than the ones here. Both are great thought and I love this camera.

PROS:It's a good photo camera and takes great low light photos without a flash.Has lots of manual controls easily accessable with buttons and knobs rather than menu driven choices.CONS:It's big and heavy. If you are use to a SLR then perhaps this doesn't matter to you. But if you are like me, wanting a better digital camera with good low light capabilities, you'll be shocked at the size and bulk.I don't like that you have to flip a switch to get to the screen to take pictures. I'm use to using a screen as a viewfinder and like it better because it works better with glasses than having to look into a little view finder.It does not focus as well in the screen viewfinder mode as it does when you use the built in viewfind. I've tried comparing the two in numerous lighting situations and get similar results but is worse in low light settings.It is noisy as the mirror flips around. Again SLR people will not notice this but I do and this makes it difficult to be discreet at a concert or somewhere that is very quite when taking the photo.A real big show stopper for me was the fact that it does not do 30 frames per second in the video mode at 1080p resulution. It only does 24 FPS. You have to drop down to 720p to get 30 FPS. This is unacceptable to me as to why a camera loaded with this much technology cannot do at least 30 FPS at 1080p.This was a christmas gift and I liked playing with the camera for a couple of weeks to evaluate it. Like I said it's a good camera for SLR people wanting to switch from film to digital and you don't mind shooting videos at 720 p, but it's going back. I plan on purchasing the Sony NEX-5R with a pancake lense in it's place. It will cost a couple hundred more but do exactly what I want it to do at less than half the weight and bulk.

Great camera for anyone looking for a DSLR. Don't buy this if you want a super high-def screen, high FPS rate or anything along the lines of that, however this camera is still more than capable of producing quality images.Pros:Great Lens with Kit (18-55)Quality VideoManual, Aperture Priority, Shutter Priority, and Program Modes as well as multiple other auto modesGood Button Set-upSmallCons:Plastic BodyScreen a little grainyLenses usually more expensive than CanonVideo can be grainy in low light.Can be difficult to learn to use.Recommended for anyone looking for a super low priced DSLR, who doesn't mind sacrificing some features for some extra cash. Check out the Rebel T4i however for something similar, but with better video and screen quality (a little more $)

I bought this Camera after alot of review. There was two reasons I bought this one was price the second was package. it was a good price and packaged with both lens made a good deal for my picture taking. I have a Nikon 35mm with 3 lens and all kind of accessories. which is obsolete now but still a number one camera. Nikon is a good name in cameras. This is not the top end in cameras but does the trick for me easy to use controls in the right place and if you try to keep up with top end you will be buying every week. Amazon had the best price and quick ship

My old 'A' school instructor is a NPS professional w/Nikon in the Northeast. I chose this digital camera over a Canon because of it's 1080p enhanced movie. Nikon is also a robust and decent brand of camera.

I purchased the d3100 from Amazon after a lot of research and discussion with friends that own various DSLRs. Despite opinions, there aren't that many differences between Canon and Nikon at this level of camera. I believe it comes down to the features that you want, the included accessories and the best deal. In the end, this package was the clear winner. I also was able to get a free 16gb card and a nice basic case and my first impressions of outdoor landscape shots and indoor action shots are excellent. My most basic advice is DO NOT purchase a camera based on megapixels alone. If you are looking for a great entry level DSLR, with a great package of accessories, look no further. For under $500, you can't beat it!

I'm unable to "zoom" in photo on monitor viewer to check clarity, etc. Could not find instructions to do same in CD reference manual. Manual a little confusing. Overall, a pretty good camera for the price.

Mine included a 300mm lens. I use it for bird (and some scenic) photography and it has been very good. Have taken it to Chesapeake Bay salt marshes, Merritt Island and Canaveral seashore, Mississippi River migration hotspots, the Gulf Coast, Lake Huron, Whitefish Bay, the Lake Erie freshwater marshes and the Appalachians and it has been all I would ask for - almost. The one downer is that it doesn't have the advanced focusing system (a la Canon D5 and D7) which makes photography birds in flight a LOT easier and more productive.
