They seem to be pretty well put together and less any damaging falls from a good distance, I expect that they will last for quite a while. I have even used them recently in storms to get the weather forecast. Overall, I am very happy with the radios and I would recommend them to other people.
* Comes with just about all the accessories you can think of: home charger, car charger, a headset for each radio.
* My brother dropped one of his radios from about 2 feet and that caused only a minor scratch to the radio.
* We've gotten a bit of snow on the radios and they are water resistant.
Cons:
* The battery life indicator is very poor. The indicator would show full battery life and after a few minutes of usage, the battery low warning would flash.
* While the radio sells itself as having 50 channels, only 8-14 are usable without a license. Channels 1-7 and 15-22 are GMRS channels which require a license. Channels 23 and up are just GMRS channels with the privacy code set. There seem to be many different iterations of the owner's manual for this device. My brother's manual indicates that only channels 8-14 are available. My manual says 1-7 and 15-22 are not available. Midland's most current manual says channels 1-7 and 15-42 are not available. I contacted Midland and received clarification that only 8-14 can be used without a license.
* The FRS channels are set to be lower powered only and the user cannot change this. This severely limits the range.
Perhaps it is an industry standard to misinform the consumer. I feel that this product should indicate up front that only channels 8-14 are available without a license and those channels can only be used in low power mode.
This has great for my son and I to communicate and I'm not yelling or running around looking for him around our house. I eventually expect he'll be playing more with the neighbor kids at their house and this way I can call him home for dinner, etc.
I set his walkie talkie Vox feature on so I hear his 'stream of consciousness' as well as his interactions with other neighborhood kids. The set is durable and has a lock so he can't change the settings. The settings stay upon turning off so he can just 'grab and go' and I don't have to check the settings every time.
Range and battery life hasn't been put to full test - it's been great in and around our yard.

DO NOT BUY THEM THEY SUCK!!!
Our group did become separated at one point and we were relaying messages for those with older radios, we could hear both parties and communicate with both, while neither could here each other, which really demonstrated the range.
GXT1000VP4 radios operate on radio frequencies that are regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC); license and fees required. The communication range quoted is calculated based on an unobstructed line of sight test under optimum conditions. Actual range will vary depending on terrain and conditions, and is often less than the maximum possible. Your actual range will be limited by several factors including, but not limited to: terrain, weather conditions, electromagnetic interference, and obstructions.
I fault Amazon.com for not publishing this information as other web sites do.
It's a good, solid, radio.
