Everything works as described. Voices come thru clear. I would recommend these to anyone wanting a good radio. I especially like the weather band feature. Nice to have.

Great walkies. I've used them hiking, camping, hunting, and paintballing--all in dense woods, never lost contact/went out of range (though I wasn't trying to test their range). Haven't tried them in rain yet, but they worked fine after spilling a little water on them. The included earpiece is great for paintballing. The clip on the back is handy when hiking.

When I understood that range is depending on the surroundings structure, I set my expectations accordingly, and I found that the the the radios worked very nice, we bought these radios for trips and emergency situations if they ever accrue, so we are using the low and medium transmitting power channels mostly during our trips, listening to the weather channels as well, knowing that if we ever need to reach out for help, we have the 5 watts full power channels to get to the most far people which are out there. Because of the fact that the radios are using channels which are commonly used, we feel that these radios give us more chances to find someone and get help in case of real need for help, there are radios in the market which are communicating encoded transmission, and to my opinion, they less suitable for emergency situations, because "no body" will hear us asking for help...we don't talk "secrets" with the radios, so we are OK that other people might hear us...these radios give us more confidence when they are with us, and they have so many goodies that I don't know if we will use most of them.

I have tested these radios near my home and on the hunting lease in dense woods. The transmission range is about 2 and 1/4 miles, but not with the original battery packs. I have four of these radios now. Some of the battery packs last only a few hours, others only 10 minutes. I have replaced the battery packs with the new Sanyo AA Eneloop batteries. The radios work great now and seem to last well past 8 hours. I just got back from a three day hunt without a recharge.

OK, this is a review of my opinion, and how the radios worked for me. The radios work. Good talking distance is about 1/2 mile. One mile and they are much static. The "roger beep" can be heard further but not voice. The "push-to-talk" button is TOO STIFF due to the rubber that waterproofs is. I took a razor-blade and cut off that rubber covering so I could push the talk button with ease. The talking distance sucks. The rubber that seals the talk button is too stiff. I would rather have a set that is NOT water proof due to the pain of mashing the button. The headsets that come with them are nothing more than toys. I discarded mine. My advice is to pay MORE and get something that has some range!!! 2 Stars just because they do work.

I have been working construction for many years and have used many different radios for many different applications. The range and power of these units can compete with some of the better industrial radios, but the clarity at shorter ranges is much better and the small size makes them much more convenient not to mention the price difference. The durability is much greater than I expected they have been dropped on asphalt, kicked, thrown, dropped in mud puddles, rained on excessively and covered in bentonite. They are scratched up, but still work as great as the day I first bought them. After all the abuse all I had to do was replace the pin in one of the belt clips and scrape the mud out of the speakers and mics with a screwdriver. The battery life is excellent. I have to charge them every other day (on medium power), but they are constantly used at least twelve hours a day. Overall for their price range I personally would compare these to the Cobra CXR925 which is an excellent radio and what I was originally going to buy (the Midland GXT1000 was on clearance for 50 bucks at a sporting goods store). The only two major differences is that the cobra is more compact, but the midland is "water proof". One of the many things I have learned in my line of work is that nothing is truly "water proof". I personally have not found the limit for these 2-ways except for the headsets (one of drowned and could not be revived when the one of the toolboxes flooded on my 450).

Some things about the walkie talkies are great but other things suck, the headset is great I love the hands free activation the package say 36 mile range it works in about 1/2 to 1 mile that was very dissipointing me and my freint live 3 and a half miles away and we split them we were planning to use them for an easier wat to talk I wasn't sure if they would work on 36 mile but is you say 36 I expect them to atleast work 3 and a half miles away!!!

I went hunting this season with a fairly large group. One of the hunters was new to the area and I purchased these radios in case we ever got separated. Not only are they very clear and once you read the manual easy to set up.
Our group did become separated at one point and we were relaying messages for those with older radios, we could hear both parties and communicate with both, while neither could here each other, which really demonstrated the range.

Used these in Yosemite National Park and had coverage all the way from Tunnel View to Yosemite Lodge, a distance of about 5 miles through trees and rain and around a granite ridge (El Cap). It was noisy but as least I could hear it. Curry Village to Yosemite Lodge was clear as a bell, with both users inside a car. Voice was undistorted, clear and loud. Solidly built. The product description says 35 miles, but we knew that was a lie going in. But they do have respectable punch for the price, we could hear from the start of the Mist Trail to the bridge clear as a bell. Obviously from Glacier Point we completely covered the valley. The NiCad battery is useless. Replaced it with AA batteries (the newest Alkalines from Eveready, the silver expensive new ones) and they lasted for 4 days under continuous use and still indicated full battery. I did not use the earphones or external mic so I cannot comment on that. But these radios are worth every penny you pay.

I recommend doing some research before you buy something. These are great radios. I also have a previous version (4 of them) of this radio that work great too. Since I do not live in a city (I live in rural Montana) these radios are usually good for at least 20 miles. But they are "line of sight" radios. If you're only getting two miles range - your signal is being obstructed. Here is the low down on these radios:
GXT1000VP4 radios operate on radio frequencies that are regulated by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC); license and fees required. The communication range quoted is calculated based on an unobstructed line of sight test under optimum conditions. Actual range will vary depending on terrain and conditions, and is often less than the maximum possible. Your actual range will be limited by several factors including, but not limited to: terrain, weather conditions, electromagnetic interference, and obstructions.
I fault Amazon.com for not publishing this information as other web sites do.
It's a good, solid, radio.

We ordered another set to go along with the set we already had ordered around 6 months prior as we really like the units, they perform quite well as we use them for our work. For the price its a fantastic deal! Dont expect to get 35miles as stated on the site/box as there is no way thats going to happen! I would expect about maybe... maybe 5 miles max if you are lucky. On our job sites we are only about 1 mile apart or less so they work great in our situation. Voices come in clear and the units are very durable. The charging unit and accsessories are great as they can even be charged on site by your autos dc port. The heads sets are ok, they work quite well too, its just the cords get in the way for us so we tend not to use them very much. All and all its a great radio set as well as price... I give it 4/5 stars.

These are not cheap two-way radios, and I bought them hoping to get my money's worth. After several months, one of the rechargeable batteries stopped taking a charge. So we started to have to use regular batteries which drain very, very fast upping the cost. In the process, one of the batteries leaked and destroyed the unit. Not sure if I can replace a single radio, but I think I would have been better off saving my money and buying a cheap radio.

Range is good, for intended purpose. Do not expect 36 mile range unless you are on a boat in the middle of lake erie on a calm clear day. Transmission is not as wonderful as I would have hoped, beginning of conversation is often cut off before it transmits to receiving party. For the cost and nature of what it is, it is not a bad buy, the only thing I really did not like about it was the hand set, it might fit a child, but not an adult ear!

these radios work well, not as far of range as stated which is expected, ear pieces were ok, I ordered new 1s as I found them uncomfortable...Over all good product and super fast shipping and for semi close range they are a great item...

These radios work great! I bought these for my friend and I to use on a motorcycle trip to Colorado (both on seperate bikes). The head piece was small enough to fit inside our helmets. The clarity was definitely not bad for running 70mph (as long as you duck behind the windshield to block some of the wind). The range is excellent. Even in the mountains, we were able to talk up to about 7 miles (that's as far as we tested it). Definitely worth the money for what comes in the box. Exceeded expectations.

I lost one of my previous set at Burning Man and decided to get another set instead of trying to find one unit. I didn't get to use them much, but bought the Midland GXT1000 for its extra features for price, such as weather channel, other additional channels and battery versatility. It will either use the supplied rechargeable battery pack or 4 AA batteries. I haven't tested their range, but don't set much stock in any 2 way radio's range claims.

Amazon was great as usual. I have not been able to extensively review this item. I did a brief test of the unit navigation through the screens are a not to difficult but a cheat sheet would help. My wife was leaving to a nearby grocery store so I told the kids to take it along with them. As they drove we talked the whole way and it was crytal clear I was in my house and its concrete block and she went inside buildings they were 1'5 miles away. I live in south florida and allthe construction is poured concrete but there are no hills. Though the distance wasn't too far I was still impressed with the range and clarity for being inside buildings. I will follow up with a more detailed review.

update July 2010 : after further testing we mounted the charger in the race car and hard wired it to the 12v electrical system. Worked great. Tie wrapped the radio to the mount. No power issues now. now we are working on a more reliable headset for use in a race car with PTT and helmet. The standard motorcycle setup is useless. Made a hybrid setup. Worked great, but the wires are just too weak. Could not take the abuse that my drivers gave it. Now trying a tactical throat mic setup with MIL-spec cables.
I purchased these for our endurance race car team for an upcoming 24 Hour race at Nelson Ledges in Ohio in October (24 Hours of LeMons, Lamest Day). We were using the Midland motorcycle helmet speakers and mic setup that works with these radios. Initially in the pits while testing they worked great. But when you got on the track you could not hear each other. After speaking with other racers and Midland Tech Support we will be trying out the FBI style in-ear piece.
The radios worked well. Just remember that to use these radios on the non-FRS frequencies you will need an FCC license.
The range was good. But because these have the FRS frequencies, the antenna is not removable. It would have helped us if we could have mounted a roof antenna but can't due to FCC law. We had good coverage until the Carousel (turn 7-9) and picked up again just before turn 10. This kinda sucked under Yellow as the area is blind at speed. You were on your own.The trees are what caused the blackout, so it really was not the radios fault.
Now the batteries did well, but they did not last the full 24 hours like we expected. They lasted only about 14 hours. This really did suck as we were not allowed to swap out radios/batteries in the hot pits due to the rules. There is no facility on the radio to plug it into a 12v supply. Now the charger base that comes with the radios does have a 12v adapter, but this is not stable enough to use in a race car.
These are little issues that mainly concern fellow racers, but to use these as they were meant these radios would be awesome.
I did contact Midland customer service about some of the issues. But they were not very helpful. More like sales people that had to look up the facts before answering my questions, which really were never answered. And they were not willing to work with me on trying to figure out how to make these work in our conditions. The company we use for our in-car cameras, [...] and [...], bend over backwards for us as we try and help them make better products. I expected that from a company like Midland. If you are reading this Mr or Mrs. Midland, please contact me. We have some ideas that could add a whole new market to your radios.

Been using these for Airsoft, and getting reliable clarity. Has a lot of features. Has enough channels to please the casual user, and those who need a little more. The Headset has it's drawbacks. They don't fit as well as they should. You can hear clearly on them, but they are not to ergonomic for the ear. If that is important to you, then be hesitant about buying them. You will most likely be unhappy. They could had made the design a bit more comfortable. Other than that the mic works well even when whispering, and you can hear everything clearly through the earpiece.

I have been using this for a few months now. I really do enjoy the product as it is easy to use, the clarity is great, and the insane amount of privacy settings. Since we do lose electricity from time to time, the weather band is a nice feature as well. However, the 36 mile range is a little deceiving though. You have to be in open waters to get the 36 mile range. Setting the power to high and living in a wooded area; you are lucky if you get a three mile range. That does not hold back my review though, I still enjoy this product. The battery life is very good, but I still carry spare batteries just in case. Also, if accessories are for you, they have plenty to choose from (they are just a little pricey though). Overall, a very good solid product.
