I have had some cheaper ones before but the range is much better on these. I like the voice activation feature.

Last year I bought the Motorola top of the line 2-way radio set (Motorola MR350R 35-Mile Range 22-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) and this week decided to test the range of the Moto - all I got was measly 1/2 mile (some trees and a couple of houses in between, both radios were outside). Unhappy I ordered the Midland pair to see if they would be better.
Today I got the Midland set - tested the range at 4 miles over woods, houses and hills! And my wife was inside the house with the one and I was in a moving SUV with the other. Amazing!
Of course, not the 36-mile advertised (lol), but I would've been happy with a 2-mile range. At the 4 miles I got - that's 8 times the range of the Motorola pair. And unlike the Moto, the Midland set came with earphones and a car charger.
If you are looking for the best range 2-way radios - this is the one to buy.

Please don't waste your time on these. I have been using Motorola 2-way radios for years and love them. Recently I was going on a solo hiking trip and was looking for a new radio with a greater range and had weather reporting. These looked great and appeared to have everything I was looking for and a 36 mile range (although I didn't really expect to get more than 10 mile out of them). The fact that I was going to use it as a one way communication emergency device, I really needed assurance that it would connect to other brand devices. I could not get it to communicate with the Motorola even in the house. I could here the Motorola on the Midland, but not the other way around. I know the midland has a privacy setting and I made sure it was set to public. I tried it multiple times with each handset. Nothing worked. I am so sick of all this subpar merchandise that either doesn't work as advertised, or is completely DOA. Thankfully Amazon has a good return policy.

This is absolutely a fantastic product. Used them on a cross country trip to stay in touch with my wife who was driving another vehicle. We were able to communicate easily within cities and mountains. These radios are an excellent value. They helped our widely separated crew members stay in touch clearly and without fail in an 11,000-foot wilderness in the Colorado Rockies. One of the best features is the optional use of AA batteries for power. There are no recharging outlets miles from nowhere. They will be part of our kit at all times.

The radios performed as expected with regard to range and clarity and ease of use. But the rechargeable batteries did not last very long and after 2 charge cycles would not work at all. I was on the road through Canada to Alaska and there was no way to contact vendor for a replacement, in fact the reason I got the walkie-talkies in the first place was because i knew there would be little to no cell coverage for 80% of the trip and needed them for vehicle to vehicle communication. However, having said that, I bought this particular brand because they also took regular AA batteries and that's what I ended up using with no problems, a set on four batteries lasting 2.5 days if we remembered to turn them off at night, which we didn't the first few days.

I'm writing this review for all those considering using these radios on a cruise ship. My personal experience was that they would work up to a maximum of about half the length of the ship (2500ish passenger capacity size) and at most through 3 decks vertically. This was in the high power mode. As such, they were not very useful to my family and I will not bring them on another cruise.
I will also note that I did not find the programming to be all that difficult. The Midland way of doing it is certainly not very efficient but stepping through the menus till you find the option you want is not that hard.

I guess it could make 35 miles on open water on a clear day, but in the woods you get about 1 to 2 miles out of it. The battery life, sound, headsets are all great though. The instruction manual needs help, big time!

Fast delivery. Good price. Clear. Love them being waterproof. Enables Joanne and I to communicate on our motorcycles. Works great if we get separated in traffic.

I purchased these for a jeep drive -with other jeeps - out in the hills of central AZ. No phone service. They worked great. The CB connection didn't work for some reason I never understood and I was happy to have these handy. I keep them in the jeep all the time now.

Bought these to go on organized 'runs' with a local car club. They have worked great. I usually loan the other out to a friend or someone who's new and doesn't have one (much like me when I did my first run.) These would be great for trips with two cars, working in a large building, etc. Not sure if the 30+ mile range is accurate. Definitely a good purchase, even better since it was an Amazon 'Lightening' Deal!

I bought this item for our annual Halloween parade and it was really a step saver.
I did not have to run up and down making sure everything was in place my helper was stationed in one section and I in the other and this saved many steps

I bought these for work purposes to communicate information to my partner located in fairly close proximity. They sound good and clear at about 1/2 a mile. Further and the sound isn't as crisp. At 3 miles you can hear a voice but cannot understand what is being said. In my experience they don't come anywhere near the 36 mile range they are advertised for. I kept them because my need was for close distance not long distance, otherwise I would have returned them in a heartbeat.

I purchased these instead of the similarly priced and equally as popular Motorola equivalent and couldn't be happier. I first purchased these to use in place of some terrible (and I mean TERRIBLE) Cobra brand radios we had. These Midland radios worked perfectly. After only a day of use my boss purchased the Motorola radios (same ones I was considering) so I wouldn't have to bring my Midland radios in anymore. In comparison, both the Midlands and Motorolas FAR surpassed the Cobra radios. But the Midlands definitely edge out the Motorolas. These Midland radios had no problem broadcasting across the school campus (often through thick brick and steel doors). In the exact same conditions the Motorals worked- but had issues with getting a bit of static.
These Midland radios broadcast strong and clear audio. I have only used the FRS channels so they are auto-set on "low power" which has been plenty powerful! The menus can be a tad confusing but a quick check of the instruction manual explains things very well. Even though I don't need to use these for work any longer I am incredibly excited to use them for geo-caching trips or general goofing around.
As far as accessories... I love that they included a car charger for the radios. My only complaint about the accessories is that the boom microphones are pretty hard to keep on your ear and kind of suck.
I'm excited to have gotten to try out three different radios in the same conditions with two of them being popular brands and models. I am glad I chose the best of the three! I highly suggest these radios!
Update: 5/23/13
These radios are STILL in 100% useful operation. I use them constantly day in and day out at work in an after school program. These radios are constantly picked up and dropped by kids (or myself), used heavily for 4+ hours a day, and still hold a charge. I am impressed enough that I had to come back to this review to let you know this is STILL a great product. My radios are over 2 years old now and they outperform NEW radios at the same price point from Motorola that were brought brand new recently by our school. With the kind of abuse I've given these things... Midland has made a fan of me.

The kids use these all the time. They are very sturdy and have a lot of features. the best part is the charging dock. couldnt ask for a better product!!!

As other reviews have mentioned, the advertised range is not anywhere near how the radios actually perform (not that I was really expecting to get 36 miles). The effective range I have tested is less than a mile in hilly/wooded terrain. Also, the hands-free headsets are not very comfortable and don't stay in position very well.

I gave the radios four stars because of the extensive set of features and durability. I won't go into all the features here, but I can say that "whisper mode" works very well, and the "call" and "vibrate" features are nice to have, used often. The two best examples of durability I can relate are: 1) one of the radios was dropped into a soapy bucket of water while turned on (completely submerged for at least 5 seconds), and after it dried out it worked just like it did out of the box, and 2) one of the radios was dropped from up in our attic all the way to the concrete garage floor and it suffered no cosmetic or functional damage. Looking at them now, I can't tell which was dropped & which was submerged. If these ever wear out, I'll be buying the new equivalent model. Very satisfied!
Update after 2 years: working like new - still holding a charge for an entire day, and still functioning perfectly despite extensive cosmetic damage / wear & tear.

Did not have high expectations for this product. It was shipped quick, packed well and the range of these units are terrific. Recommend highly!
