Setup is a pain you first enter the menu mode and are given about 20 different options. None are particularly easy to understand here are a few examples of what shows up and what it means.
gr = group, wow this one makes sense!
vox = voice act. 2 that make sense!
bp = silent operation, wouldn't that be so in common sense land?
of = dual channel monitor, DC would have made more sense wouldn't it?
pr = power level, what the screen won't display a L?
I am uploading a picture of Midlands "menu layout". I will admit I am not the smartest person out there my day job consists of wiring and building networks and installing systems into business and high end homes. But when I look at this diagram I just have to scratch my head and wonder, Why? What was going through their heads when they designed these.
Quality wise they are pretty good they feel sturdy. I prefer the talk button on the motorola radios as it stand proud of the surface a bit more and I think its easier to hold down compared to these.
Dollar for dollar these are much less expensive than the mv11c's and that's really the reason for buying them. Range wise I do think that the FCC should force manufacturers to be "realistic" I can get 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile out of them and that's in normal suburban residential use, I find it hard to believe that even in what they call "ideal" terrain (flat area or on water) that they would even come close to their supposed range.
pros
price
good build quality
rechargeable battery
nice dual charger
very good belt clip
cons
range is ok no way its gonna work over a mile
menus system is terrible ! see picture I posted
vox. c'mon who wants their radio to transmit everything they say?
The range is definitely not 36 miles (as expected) but good enough to reach my hunting buddies several miles across the ranch.
Battery life is fantastic. They will last an entire weekend without turnin them off. I like this because it's easy to forget to turn them off when you get back to the lodge. Wake up the next day, and they're still ready to go. If your batteries DO die, you can always switch to AA batteries in a pinch and your radios won't know the difference.
The headsets are pretty good. I like that they're lightweight; They don't feel like they're going to fall off.
Overall, I HIGHLY recommend Midland products; Especially this one. And I'll probably be back in a few months to get another pair for backup.
Onshore, its range was disappointing, giving much less than a mile range through moderate brush and palmettos from inside a car. We tried this twice. It worked once and failed once.
They worked perfectly car to car while we were caravaning to the cruise terminal. Through downtown Tampa during rain we could talk with the other driver even when we could not see him.
The many options involving groups, privacy and security were too confusing, so we did not use them, so we often were interupted by others using the same common frequencies. This was distracting and caused us to usually just turn off the devices. We did not try the earphones. We had no problem with battery life.
We saw someone else on the ship using the yellow Motorola set, and he claimed they worked, without saying more. We also saw others carrying Cobra units, but we did not ask if they worked.
Around our yard (lightly wooded 2 acres) they work great, and our 5 year old loves them. It was hard for her to squeeze the PTT button at first, but now she can.
The weather bands work great, and I intend to use the device boating.
Overall they give a feeling of quality, and it may well be the best model in the pricerange. We will keep them and find other times to use them. And when we cruise again we will take them along, but they are not consistently dependable enough for cruise ships if you really need to rely on them.
Good product, but realize it's limitations. This is my second set.....so that tells you something.
The features are pretty well designed, even though most of us will probley never use them all. The weather station is a good addition sine we work outside alot, came in handy a couple of times. The ear piece(s) are a blessing, we can hear eachother better now over the loud equipment. Havent tried the "whiper" mode yet but maybe soon during hunting... or paintball. These units fit real well in the palm of your had as the buttons are well placed, the Motorola had a nice feel to it as well since it was curved a bit to a palm but the were around 2" smaller in length (that may be a plus to some but I fell the bigger the better).
I was looking to buy another Motorola set but I came across these at a very good price ($50 at the time I bought it, a bit more expensive now as I am typing this review). I have never had a Midland series before so I thought "why not try it", well worth it so far! I have had Motorla (good) and Uniden (not good) so I can base my review only off the units that I have had in the past. All in all.... I believe its a great deal!
in the city with all the interferences and buildings u can get a distance of 1.5 kilometres, that's a lot for such a small radio
but.. dont know why one of the radio when im with 30 peoples playing airsoft, it start to receive some statics and no one is touching their radio
