Easy to use too! I took them straight out of the box, charged them, plugged in the headsets that were included, found a channel and turned on VOX and was ready to go. Highly recommended for any motorcycle/moped riders looking for cheaper comms than the $300 Scalas or equivalent.

The earphone piece can be improved a little bit to be more comfortable, it is too big for our ears.

Line of site radio's work at the most 2 miles? Didn't really expect much more
than that. Comes with rechargable batteries and lots of features. Very good to
have. One recently is having problems and is still under 3 yr warranty. Emailed Midland received a response in 2? days, not bad. Response though was to check with
Amazon to see if they are their? warranty.
Good radio, good price, plenty of options.
Didn't give 5 stars due to midland support trying to tuff repair onto Amazon
4 might change to a 5.
Hope this helps

Since radio signals are "line of sight", move to higher ground. If you are in a shopping mall, try moving to the second floor. Even if your family member is on a lower floor, that may solve any problems in communicating. As with all radios (including handheld Marine radios), the 36 mile ratings are only while on the water (without obstructions) or from mountain top to mountain top. I agree, these figures probably should not be used for marketing.
With that said, these radios are PHENOMINAL. I was able to transmit and receive a relatively strong signal in San Francisco, over 38 city blocks. There were spots that I did not receive signal, but then I moved to higher ground such as up a small hill. I've used handheld radios before, including CB, FRS/GMRS, Ham, and Military, and I like this one the best so far.
Here are two things that I do not like about this radio. Keep in mind, even with these issues, I still think this set is the best that I've used:
1. The headsets are a joke. I do not know who designed them, but they do not stay in place. The sound quality is OK for the headsets, but the design issue makes them unusable. Just to be clear: unusable.
2. The plastic on the headset is somewhat slick, meaning it would be easy to drop these if not aware of this issue.

They seem to be pretty well put together and less any damaging falls from a good distance, I expect that they will last for quite a while. I have even used them recently in storms to get the weather forecast. Overall, I am very happy with the radios and I would recommend them to other people.

* Comes with just about all the accessories you can think of: home charger, car charger, a headset for each radio.
* My brother dropped one of his radios from about 2 feet and that caused only a minor scratch to the radio.
* We've gotten a bit of snow on the radios and they are water resistant.
Cons:
* The battery life indicator is very poor. The indicator would show full battery life and after a few minutes of usage, the battery low warning would flash.
* While the radio sells itself as having 50 channels, only 8-14 are usable without a license. Channels 1-7 and 15-22 are GMRS channels which require a license. Channels 23 and up are just GMRS channels with the privacy code set. There seem to be many different iterations of the owner's manual for this device. My brother's manual indicates that only channels 8-14 are available. My manual says 1-7 and 15-22 are not available. Midland's most current manual says channels 1-7 and 15-42 are not available. I contacted Midland and received clarification that only 8-14 can be used without a license.
* The FRS channels are set to be lower powered only and the user cannot change this. This severely limits the range.
Perhaps it is an industry standard to misinform the consumer. I feel that this product should indicate up front that only channels 8-14 are available without a license and those channels can only be used in low power mode.

This has great for my son and I to communicate and I'm not yelling or running around looking for him around our house. I eventually expect he'll be playing more with the neighbor kids at their house and this way I can call him home for dinner, etc.
I set his walkie talkie Vox feature on so I hear his 'stream of consciousness' as well as his interactions with other neighborhood kids. The set is durable and has a lock so he can't change the settings. The settings stay upon turning off so he can just 'grab and go' and I don't have to check the settings every time.
Range and battery life hasn't been put to full test - it's been great in and around our yard.
