Midland GXT1000VP4 36-Mile 50-Channel FRS/GMRS Two-Way Radio (Pair) (Black/Silver)

The Good
- 5 watts of power gave great clarity and surprising range on many occasions
- Lots and lots of options to programme the radios to work with other radio users (even other brands)
- The weather station function worked extremely well and was handy for camping
- The car charger was great
- Being able to use AA batteries as a backup was a great assurance
The Bad
- The need to purchase an FCC license
- The menu to programme the radios are a bit unwieldy at times, particularly to just change the channel.
The Ugly
- The enclosed ear pieces were horrible, so we bought the security ear pieces which were awesome
- The battery conked out on one radio without any low battery warning on two occasions
All in all, exceptional value for money. The only way you will beat these radios is to get a commercial and professional set.

These radios are in use 12 hours a day 6 days a week. They were not intended for this type of use, but we find that more expensive radios get broken, lost, worn out and otherwise disabled at a similar pace. Less expensive radios seem to fade in and out and don't have the sound quality. We need good sound quality so the lot spotters can speak slowly and clearly enough for the sales managers to understand them. I don't know what's so hard to understand about "customer in the truck aisle" but . . .
With the constant abuse these radios endure they last about 8-10 months. While we usually wear out the radio first, occasionally we manage to keep one long enough that the battery won't charge. Keep in mind the daily misues. We keep several batteries on hand for this purpose.
Based on our experience, if I were to personally purchase radios for hunting or fishing I would buy this radio. I would expect them to last years considering how I care for my personal equipment.

They don't hit 36 miles, even on the San Augustin Plains in the State of New Mexico on a clear day, but none of them do.
Mostly, it is an excellent unit and the hands free unit is a must have however, my company has bought several of these over the last few years, and some of them just don't work, even a couple of them right out of the box failed.
Also, the transmit button will sometimes break after several months of use and we use ours a lot.
This is not an expensive item, so you do get what you pay for.
I keep buying them because, Amazon will replace them if they stop working within the warranty period, and because when they do work, they are tops. We use ours a lot as mentioned, so you can take this review as gospel.
Sincerely,
Doc

The radio build quality is great, feels much better than the Motorola Talkabout that I own (which were 3 handsets for the price of these 2 handsets).
However, the marketing advertisement of 36-miles range is totally bogus. Technologically this is limited by the output wattage of the radios. Under ideal hypothetical test conditions, the transmitter can do 36-miles given the wattage output of the radios. However, in real world situations, these radios gave me a work test range (suburbs of New York City) of just under 3-miles (in the dead of night, so not much cars around). Which is pretty damn good considering that my Motorola Talkabout radios had only about a 2-mile range.
The 50-channel is totally crap. As someone else posted, the "extra" channels are just a bunch of FRS/GMRS channels with CTSS codes pre-programmed by Midland (which are pretty useless to me, until I can use my scanner to find out what those channel settings are so I can use them my Motorola radios). Too bad Midland does not allow you to change these programmed channels; if they did, that would made this an awesome radio.
The dual channel scan feature is great. However, the feature is turned off automatically, once you turn off the radio and turn it back on. Wish it didn't do that.
The NOAA Weather Alert works nicely, just like they do on the Motorola Talkabout radios.
The added car charger adapter is a great bonus for using these radios in the car on a long road trip with other cars.
I have not really used the headsets, so I cannot really comment on their real-world usage quality. They work, is all I can say.
Would I buy these again? Heck yeah! I am actually waiting for them to be available again here at Amazon to order a set for my friend.
