36 mile range is flat out a lie. Once you get over the fact that it works within 1 mile in the woods and about 1/4 mile with buildings and cars, its not too bad. Most of the time we use it to talk within large wedding venue and its surrounding grounds. For my purpose its fine. It also works nicely when hiking if one person moves ahead, etc.
EDIT: After sometime of use both radios broke. Developed somekind of short inside where slight press around microphone are would activate the RX/TX. If you hold it in your hand or carry in pocket every second it would beep on and off. Product turned out to be junk

These radio's work very well after you get over the fact that no portable radio will work long range in an urban setting. The advertised 37 mile range is not realistic in most settings. No portable radio will work over about a mile unless there is an unobstructed line of sight to the other party such as over water (or maybe mountain top to mountain top). These are 5 Watt radios. The FCC limits the power output on GMRS Radios to 5 Watts maximum. Some brands are not even 5 watts, however these are.
I use these radio's at our hunting camp in Central Georgia. In the thick forest, the maximum range is about a mile. As indicated above,I have used all major brands with Midland the best and Motorola coming in second.
What I like:

Camo finish
Push to Talk (PTT) works very well, the switch is solidly built
The included headsets work well but are somewhat uncomfortable to wear
More features that you will ever need
The Value Pack with included accessories is a great value and better value than any other radio on the market.
Waterproof, ok to use in the rain
The Amazon price is a real bargain for the radios and all the accessories that are included.
3 Year Warranty (as far as I now the others are only guaranteed a year)
The rechargeable batteries last a long time.
What I don't like:
The unit is somewhat bulky and slightly larger that most radios on the market. However they still fit in your shirt pocket or on your belt with the included belt clip.
Summary:
If you want GMRS radios and accessories that work well at a bargain price, this is the one to buy.

These two-way radios were purchased for my sons for Christmas. They have truely enjoyed them. The sound is clear and they are easy to operate. My 7 and 8 year old sons have dropped them several times and they did not break and it did not compromise the quality. We love them!

Purchased these radios in June/August 2010 time frame.One of the radios now will not power on at all. Tried the second battery pack (which works in the other radio) and FRESH AA battery's and still no luck. Have only used them twice. I'm past the 30 days to return to Amazon. Have attempted several times via email and phone to contact Midland and no response. And this company is in my home town. This is sad.

As with every FRS or GMRS radio I've ever seen, the advertised range is unlikely to be achieved even in outer space. However, I've had others which advertise 15 - 20 miles range not even give me 1/2 mile car-to-car. These do better than that around town. They're a bit larger than many FRS or GMRS radios, but the longer antenna is how you get better range.
Battery life has been excellent for us, and the accessories are also terrific. We use these hiking, traveling, and even around town sometimes. I'll also take them hunting, where the headset will be very helpful to keep things quiet.
So far, we're only using the FRS channels, as I haven't been able to justify paying the FCC the $80 for a GMRS license. Maybe this fall?

My one and only beef with these radios is the 12v adapter they come plugs into the charging base station instead of directly into the radio. Other than that, these are some of the best FRS/GMRS radios I have used. Voice quality is excellent, range is excellent.

1. Range is nowhere near 36 miles.
2. Battery life is decent, but the battery indicator is not great, it goes from showing full charge to low battery in seconds.
3. Kit headphone and mic are very fiddly and uncomfortable, additional accessories are quite expensive.
4. The user interface and on-screen menu options are not so easy to use, make sure you read and understand the manual.

Before I bought this unit I always read all the reviews from Amazon. Given the history of its star rating, I gave it a shot. I received it last night (bought here at Amazon of course) and initially played with the basic settings. So far, I like the camo skin and the custom ring tones and vibrate mode. I also like the Low, Medium and High battery/power mode. I bought this for hiking purposes and future outdoor activities and I cannot wait to put it on test this Saturday. I will append to this review once I have it put in to use.

The radios by themselves are good, but be careful to read the fine print. The first time I went to use the radios one of them didn't have a full charge on it. No problem, I just used AA batteries. Then we realized we could barely hear each other through the headphones even with the radios turned to max volume. I thought it might be the headphones, but they were very loud when plugged into a friend's radio made by a different company. Midland blamed it on the headphones anyway, but they were not covered under the warranty. So I didn't use the radios again for a few months until we went on another trip and I made sure to place the radio on the charger a day early this time so it would have ample time to charge. Same problem one radio didn't take but half a charge. I contacted Midland on Friday explaining my situation, they got back to me on Wednesday to say there was probably an issue with the battery pack (No duh). I emailed back around 10:30 am and said I figured that much, but how do I correct it. They got back to me on Thursday night saying I needed to buy another battery pack because they are not covered under the warranty either. So what is covered? Turns out not much, not the headphones, not the battery packs, not the charger, not the adapter and not even the antennas. In short if all you need is just the radios and there isn't a problem with them, the radios are OK, but heaven help you if there is a problem with them. It will take forever for someone to tell you that's not covered under the warranty. That large 3 year warranty logo needs to include an even larger asterisk. Radios get 5 stars, everything else including the warranty and service gets 1 star for an average of 3 stars. If I need to buy all new accessories to replace all these defective ones I just bought, maybe I should consider a different brand radio.

The units work well but don't expect the advertised range. I've gotten 30 miles but only with height, high on a mountain to a valley below you might get close to that range, you need to know how radio waves work to exploit their true range. Which could be a few hundred feet to close to the advertised 35 mile range. I was able to keep in contact with my hunting buddies high in the Sierra's by making contact at predetermined times, which gave us time to search for the optimum tx/rx site. They worked fine for us. If you want range you'll need to get the ones that are able to use a repeater station. But for what these are they fine for the money and the weather station comes in handy too. Height,line of sight, squelch off for max range reception.

I bought this to use with a Nolan motorcycle helmet with the Ncom system for communications between members of our riding group. It works great. The transmission/reception distance not been really tested, but it has been working acceptably. One of the best features is the clarity of reception/transmission. The only negative is that on one of our long rides I ran the batteries down past the point where it was beeping until it wouldn't display anything. After recharding, it still wouldn't turn on or display and I thought it was dead. I put AA batteries in it and it worked. I removed the AA batteries and put the original battery in and it was back to life. I have used it since and it is working fine. I like it.

Unit works very well for us, reception is very clear... we use it off road, one talkie unit is with the lead rider and the other is taking up the rear...this communication device is very affordable and includes the head sets (they fit in our helmets nicely).... Comparing these to other talkie units that cost hundreds of dollars more and accomplish the same thing.

Works great in long flat land or dense woodlands, excellent choice to keep hunters, outdoor enthusiasts, or workers connected. I use our radios at our cabin in the mountains as well as on job sites.

By far one of the best radios I have ever owned. When they say a 30 mile range, they were not kidding. I was on top of a mountain and I was speaking with people in the valley. I live in Utah and I am not talking about some little hill, I am talking about the top of one of the Rocky Mountains. We were talking right on top of a Motorola radio. My dad had a Motorola radio, and he couldn't hear us, but we could hear him, and he was in between my wife and I.

With the one opportunity to use them, we are pleased with the performance of these radios. We use them when we travel with our RV to communicate with others in our group while on the road. So far, they have performed well. We haven't had an opportunity to test the range, but the clarity and ease of use has been very good so far. They seem to work well for the purpose we had in mind.

Nice product. Only compliant is the push to talk button is sometime hard to tell if it is actually pushed. Could be me, my kids don't have any problem.

The product was hard to use . Trying to get two station to link up so that we could talk together was down right hard.Then I went to see about the National Weather Channel and I almost never got back to my own channel! Needs to be a little more user friendly.

Recently while archery elk hunting, my husband dropped one of these radios during a walk through the brush. Returning to the same spot 2 weeks later, he found it. And it still worked!! During the final days of our hunt, there were some reception issues between us& our hunting part. This may have been due the mountainous terrain between us. We were approximately 10 miles apart. My husband is thrilled with the quality and convenience of on the go recharging.
