Bought the set to be used for snowmobileing. Bought with the in helmet headset accessories as well. You must buy those if you intend to use this on a snowmobile. They are quite clear, even with the loud roar of a snowmobile in the background. You won't be able to have a full conversation with someone but it does easily serve the purpose of letting each other know if something is wrong or we need to stop to pee or something. Can't quite speak to the long term reliability of the radios yet but I have dropped them in the snow a couple of times and they seem to work just fine. Battery life is very good, used them for a full day and the battery only went to half. All in all, the alternative for having a good set of radios for snowmobile use is in the 300+ range and I was not willing to spend that, $30 a peice for the two in helmet headsets and $50 for the set of radios you just can't beat them.

Had a pair for a year now, no problems. Light, small, and when paired w headphones you almost forget its there. Vox feature works nicely, but be careful; it sucks up batteries if used on at sensitive level--any loud breathing gets transmited, and before you know it, your batteries are gone. Charge up everynight, and you can leave em on all day--not constant talking, but just on, waiting for eventual transmitions. If you're chattin alot, of course, the battery will fade in a few hours. I like the fact that if your battery dies, it'll take regular AA batteries. A life saver in the field. Also comes w a charger for your car. Other features like group mode, beeps transmiting/receiving, power output, etc. are all easily modified, and work. My pair have put up with some rain, and water splashed on them, but I'd hate to drop em in the water--I don't trust the little rubber seal/closure where the headphones plug in to really keep any major water out, and it opens fairly easily if caught upon your gear. I take off a star mainly bc the range is no where close to 36 miles. I work in the swamps of the Pantanal, we had our boatman drop us off on a beach, and go a few km downriver, while testing the radio every 30s. Within a few minutes the signal was lost. All in all good buy for the money, just don't expect exceptional range.

I bought these in December 2009 from Amazon.com and they were just as I expected.
The radio build quality is great, feels much better than the Motorola Talkabout that I own (which were 3 handsets for the price of these 2 handsets).
However, the marketing advertisement of 36-miles range is totally bogus. Technologically this is limited by the output wattage of the radios. Under ideal hypothetical test conditions, the transmitter can do 36-miles given the wattage output of the radios. However, in real world situations, these radios gave me a work test range (suburbs of New York City) of just under 3-miles (in the dead of night, so not much cars around). Which is pretty damn good considering that my Motorola Talkabout radios had only about a 2-mile range.
The 50-channel is totally crap. As someone else posted, the "extra" channels are just a bunch of FRS/GMRS channels with CTSS codes pre-programmed by Midland (which are pretty useless to me, until I can use my scanner to find out what those channel settings are so I can use them my Motorola radios). Too bad Midland does not allow you to change these programmed channels; if they did, that would made this an awesome radio.
The dual channel scan feature is great. However, the feature is turned off automatically, once you turn off the radio and turn it back on. Wish it didn't do that.
The NOAA Weather Alert works nicely, just like they do on the Motorola Talkabout radios.
The added car charger adapter is a great bonus for using these radios in the car on a long road trip with other cars.
I have not really used the headsets, so I cannot really comment on their real-world usage quality. They work, is all I can say.
Would I buy these again? Heck yeah! I am actually waiting for them to be available again here at Amazon to order a set for my friend.

My husband and I need to communicate frequently on a new job we have as shuttle drivers of rental cars between two facilities a mile apart. We really like the clarity and the reliability after using these radios a week now. Also, the battery does not show a reduction of 'bars' even after using them on an 8-hour shift. The charger is very handy to have, we pop them into the stand each evening. The portability works well for us with all the other things we have to carry with us; we just clip them to the belt of our fanny packs. We found that the earphone w/boom mic is not the best design; it keeps falling away from our ear. No matter how we adjust it, it seems to have too large of an ear bud to stay tight against the ear canal. We have used them ok, however we have to keep fiddling with them. We did find that as the instructions say, they pick up our voice better when the radio is in 'whisper' mode. We have placed an order for the earphone/mic that has the ear connection that fits snugly down into the ear canal and the mic is threaded over your ear, clipped to your collar, then down your sleeve and clipped into your cuff, the type the secret service use. We hope this will work better and Amazon had a great price for the pair of them. Overall, this radio set is a bargain for what we wanted it to do and it does it well.

For anyone looking at purchasing portable, two-way radios, keep in mind that even professional radios (those used by EMS, police, fire, etc.) don't have the kind of range that these radios claim. The rule of thumb is 1 watt of power = 1 mile of range. I'm sure the radios are a fine product but don't be misled into thinking they will cover the listed distance. Think of it another way - radios stations, which broadcast at very high power, don't have the kind of range these radios claim to have.

It is the best hybrid between something professional and super expensive and the typical walkie talkie. The 5w power are noticeable, despite the typical constrains of similar devices. I recommend it,

Second of two sets of these radios that we purchased. The range through walls and such has really surprised us. We can have one person in the living room of our house and another person in the local grocery store shopping about 4 blocks away and reception is crystal clear. (flat terrain, residential houses.) Line of sight range is also very good, we have used them to communicate at a distance of about 6 miles with no problem. Have not yet been able to run the battery's out in out trip yet.
The only real disappointment was with the headsets that come with the radios. We did not find them very functional or comfortable. They would have been better off to not include them and reduce the price a few dollars. The upgrade version invisible headsets are excellent and worth the money.

We bought two pairs of these radios. We liked the accessories, although we ended up not using them because of the problems we had almost immediately with the radios. The first time we checked the radios they seemed to have decent range, although they never were actually clear. Within just a few weeks the range and clarity had deteriorated to the point that we were hardly able to use them at all. We had a pair of far less expensive Motorolas that were about 7 years old that consistently outperformed these Midlands.
We contacted Midland about the problems we were having. They wouldn't refund them but offered to replace them instead. We looked at their record--four radios out of four were complete junk--and decided not to bother with replacements.
These radios are a serious waste of money!!! Buy Motorolas instead, as we should have done. Hopefully this warning will help you avoid serious buyers remorse.

I bought these walkie talkies primarily for my hunting trip, but plan to use them for a skiing trip I have planned for later this year. I did buy them off Amazon, but through a different retailer who had 100 percent positive feedback, and who was selling the item for about 5$ less. First off they arrived 2 days sooner than projected so that was nice. I ordered 2 sets so four radios altogether. Their where a few features on these radios that intrested me.
1. Wisper mode works great! When I go hunting In a party there is a high premium placed on quietness. Being able to wisper in the mic and have everyone hear what I'm saying is awesome.
2. 5 watts of output power is the best on the market.
3. Waterproof do I need to explain this one ?
4. The caller I'd thing is cool but you would really need more than 2 sets cause otherwise you probably know who's calling you.
In short I'm glad I have stuck with this brand, and I look forward to buying some accesories in the future.

Having read the reviews for these radios, I had limited expectations when I got them in the field. I have been pleasantly surprised. The physical quality is very good with the cases, antenna and clips all very sturdy compared to most of the older models I've seen.
While I have not had a chance to test the ultimate range, I can say that we got clear reception over a few miles in rough terrain where we had absolutely no line of sight.
The radio's came charged and it took almost two whole days (mostly on standby) for one of the units to alert to a low battery.
The charger is GREAT! The radio's clip into the charger base so they have a positive connection and I have even charged them in the charger laying down (backs of the radios to the floor) on the front seat or tranny hump while driving offroad with no problems and a constant charge light.
I ordered the in the ear head sets with the PTT and so have not used the headsets included with the package. However I did try one on when they arrived and wasn't too impressed, the in the ear buds are the way to go.
Overall, these are great radios especially for the price. In fact I'm ordering another pair for the rest of our hunting party.

I purchased the midland radios to replace my older midlands that I use with a helmet headset (Midland AVPH2 Closed Face Helmet Headset). The volume is extremely low when a headset is attached and I have to stop my motorcycle to hear. I compared the old and new radio and the volume is approximately 30% lower. I contacted Midland technical support they said that the volume was intentionally set lower on the newer radios when a headset is attached. Unfortunately, I missed the deadline to return the products to Amazon. So, Don't buy any new Midland radios if you intend to use with a helmet headset.

This is a very durable product. I haven't used some of the features yet, however, the range was one of the features that drew me to buy it. I know the clarity is good from transmission heard from the radio. Would have loved for it to come with a case to carry everything in.

If you are from the mobile devices generation then you may have some hiccups during the initial setup. The menu navigation is not as intuitive as I expected. I had no difficulty connecting the 2 units I bought but connecting to a external group required some setup. I had this delivered to me on a Friday & I took up the mountain on Saturday on a nice powder day. For first half of the day my radio didn't transmit or receive with other members in my party.
I tried calling the helpline number to get help but they were not open. So I had to sit down & figure it out on my own. Took me a while but it worked at last.
Pros: Cost, range, splash proof, headsets
Cons: heavy, cumbersome setup, poor support

Bought these radios to use for our ROTC field training as well as for use with our University's student run Search and Rescue group. Got them two days after ordering, charged'm up and took'm out. First test was with my buddy who lives about 3/4 of a mile down the road. He was using his Cobra and could hear me loud and clear, I couldn't even pick him up. Next test was out for a Search and Rescue drill. From one side of our campus/town I was able to talk to one of our coordinators, a good 2 miles through buildings and woods. His VHF radio even had static. Since then we've used them in the field and the ear pieces have been pretty reliable. Probably the best radios you'll find without moving to the UHF and VHF radios. Absolutely worth the $65 and amazing in the field. Absolutely recommend this purchase. Just bought my 3rd set.
P.S. One note, battery in one of the radios did die, but I was able to just use AA's and it's been great!

If you're in to preparedness at all then this is the two way for you. You can't beat the 36 mile radius! I bought this for hubby for Christmas mainly because he is always going to cut wood off somewhere far away from civilization and I would worry about him having an accident and not being able to call for help. With these two ways he can keep in touch with me and let me know where he is, when he arrives, and when he's ready to come home. I don't worry about him now, because I know at least he's got a way to stay in touch. Very clear sound and no interference from outside channels. The two ways are extremely durable and well made and the clip on is great for just adding it to your belt or backpack easily. I highly recommend the Midland GXT two ways!

Works OK. In urban areas usually its range is no larger than half a mile. We did used it once or twice for a slightly larger range though. When it works - it works very well. Many nice features. Battery life IS an issue. Usually it will hold less than a typical hiking day. I used it a couple of times at work to communicate between my AV crew. The whisper mode came in handy then.

These things are cool, and they work great. I bought them for a 700 mile move to keep contact between trucks, but I am sure I will get lots more use out of them now that I have moved.

We are mainly using these for our Auction Service between Clerks and Helpers to save time and energy while giving better customer service to buyers and sellers by cutting down there wait time on questions or issues.Believe it is making us more productive.Don't really care for the boom mikes that came with radios so I bought different style listening/mic pieces
