I bought these to use in a bar. I am a bouncer at a bar and we have live bands on Friday and Saturdays. My other bouncer and I bought the Midland Radios and Midland Security Headsets for the bar so we can communicate when we needed something. The radios are awesome, the only drawback is the battery life. We can only use them for about 18 hours and they go dead, so the rechargeable batteries that come with them are a lifesaver! I would recommend to anyone looking for a high quality radio. The NOAA weather feature is nice as well.

only used them a cpl times outside and they seem pretty good. but i use them in the woods and range is limited to maybe 1/4 mile. i use them on my atv with family and they are good for that so im happy that i can use handsfree and chat. just need to get a helmet headset for better sound and noise reduction from atv

These GXT's are my second set of Midland two-way radios. They carry a strong signal and work well, the features and options are quite complicated and I have not used the headsets or the privacy code options, I don't need them. Just turn on the rotary switch and key-up. Ideal for carpooling, family camping, hotels, boating, festivals, RVing, etc. These radios are very simple and easy to use, or they can be as complicated as you want with the privacy coding options. I read the instruction manual fully and initially was intimidated, but actually they are very simple, turn them on push the button and talk. Another good thing about this package set-up is that it comes with all the batteries and AC/DC chargers, charge them at home or in your vehicle. I use these radios for hunting in dense hilly pine plantations. The radios are feature rich and you get a lot of radio for the cost. I am also a ham radio operator and my handheld ham radios cost 3x as much for one radio. I don't know how they can offer them for so little. The battery life is very good, the tx/rx audio quality is excellent, they come w/ metal hydride batteries and drop in charger, and they even have vibrate call.
The usable range is always a question w/ handheld radios. These are UHF radios w/ tiny antennas and they aren't going to replace a ham radio base station w/ a 15' antenna, repeater, or cell tower. It has also been said that pine needles resonate around 440mHz which also antennuates the signal. We find the usable range to be about 1/2 mile to 1 mile in the woods. We are rarely any further apart than that so they are very handy. Your mileage may vary.
The one thing I don't like about these radios is they are darn hard to find if you drop it. We've lost 2 so far.

My brother and I took these radios to the canyons at park city on a ski trip. they worked great. battery life was impressive. never ran down with moderate use and on all day. I could reach him on the slopes with me down at the lodge. range is of course not as advertised. When testing I got about 0.5-1mile city. certainly up to several miles up on the mountain. clarity was outstanding. I don't think you can find a better radio in this category. Highly recommend.

We use these while on biking, hiking or camping trips. They work great and allow our kids some independence while giving us the peace of mind in knowing that they can get a hold of us if needed. Originally we purchased these because I have a seizure disorder and my husband wanted to be able to know that I could reach someone outside if I were inside our home alone. We live on a large acreage of land and the range covered is true to what is advertised. High quality and very durable product!

This radios are cool. I bougth it in replace of my motorola.
Now using these radios i feel better with my old motorola.
But the beltclip isn't better than my old motorolas.
Any way, these are great radios...i recommend !!!

I recently purchased these back in January. I have had Motorola and Cobra's before, but not that happy with their range, about 1-1 1/2 miles. I took these out with me on a day hike 2 weeks ago. I live in Idaho and it was cold and snowing a lot. My partner's wife decided to wait in the truck, so we used this to test these radios. Very hilly terrain. Conditions sucked, cold, blowing snow. We got about 3 miles separation is all for the day, but they worked great. I dropped mine in the snow several times, banged it on trees, sat on it. It held up great. For the money these are great radios for in the field. I love them and have since purchased two more. Oh ya the batteries held up great as well, we had them on for about 6 hours.

All manufacturers exaggerate the range of these little radios. I have used these to hear users on top of a 14,000 foot mountain from 6 miles away, but there were no obstructions between me and them. That's the best distance I've achieved. I had a lower power version of these and they worked well for several years before one of them died. I saved its battery as a spare for these and I can still use the one working with these. Most Midlands use the same rechargeable batteries, although you might carry at least four alkalines along if you expect to be away from the recharger for more than a day. If you're camping out you might want to establish a timetable to use them to extend battery life. They have excellent channel security, either with just two of them or in a group. Hearing other users of the same channel can get very annoying. The numerous privacy choices prevent that almost 100%. Like others, in a city or any enclosed space the range is very limited. The headsets can be handy of you're fishing or hunting. I've used 2-way radios for more than 40 years. The first ones I had were the size and weight of bricks. These are state-of-the-art, light, with good clips and among the best currently available.

My Father-in-law uses this out on Lake Michigan when he goes fishing, walking around town or when he and my husband goes to hunting camp. We had an earlier model and these work twice as far and the sound quality is excellant. Also the weather alert really comes in handy.

This was an upgrade from Motorola walkie talkies I had from 2003 or so. The difference in audio quality is impressive. I've compared these to newer Motorola models and Midland sounds way better. The range is great, and the battery life is good. I've taken them in the field for 8 hours of moderate use and the rechargeable battery packs lasted more than 2 days. Love the fact that you can substitute regular AA when your pack runs out.

The quality is what I expected from MIDLAND and I'm not dissappointed. Really good set of radios. I live in a coastal area that sometimes floods during a bad storm. I needed radios that I could depend on in an emergency. That's why I choose MIDLAND.

Wow and Wow. The device runs about a mile in a busy warehouse district through buildings, lines, cell towers, and highways with 0 interference. On an open job site, it should run about 3 or 4 miles interference free. The 50 channels are a plus. Understanding the programming takes about 10 minutes. Directions are only provided in English.

I purchased these to upgrade from my old Icom FRS radios which were well built (Japan) but not enough range. These have some nice features such as NOAA weather channels, ability to use 4aa batteries when the battery pack depletes, dual channel scan and two types of squelch codes CTCSS and DCS. Some of the features were not very useful to us but nice to know they're there if ever needed. I liked the silent option. I understood that there was no way they would do 36 miles. I just wanted a useful way of calling back to camp. From mtn top to valley we got 7 miles. We even achieved a signal from my lost partner headed up the wrong valley 3/4 miles on the dark side of the mtn. If you understand how radio waves work you can use these to their fullest extent. My old FRS radios worked out to 18 miles hill to hill. So these should work just fine. One con is the squelch crack at the end of transmission, not good if you want stealth.

I purchased these units with the idea of using them on the ski slopes to easily communicate with children and friends; and they work great for that purpose, of course assuming you have a gmrs license and use high power transmission. If you are familiar with Stowe VT, I was able to communicate with my daughter at the toll house (bottom of toll road) while I was somewhere on the gondolier trail or at the base of the forerunner quad (3-4 miles away and with a hill in between). Batteries lasted a whole day of skiing without any problem (indicator still showed full charge).
I gave them a try in the city, and the range is not as good there - which is expected.

I bought these radios based on many good reviews and have found them to be quite nice. The max range is listed as 36 miles, for a flat area LOS communication. I have had good luck with them at the 13 mile range. My GF was inside the house holding a radio and I went to a hill on our country property about 13 miles away with many hills in between and we were able to communicate fine. NEAT! I did let them charge for the full 24 hour period that the manual called for and obtained an $85 FCC license to use the high-power channels to be legal.

I ordered these and received them in two days. Overnight shipping. I have used these every time I go hunting. In the woods, I'd say the reception was pretty good as long as your terrain is flat. Belt clip them to your bibs or pocket and use a headset instead of fumbling for them all the time. Get rid of the headset that comes with them (too bothersome and don't fit worth a darn). Get the avp4 (surveillance type) and you're set. Plenty of choices for channels to select and all the other features are a bonus. The animal alert calls are pretty cool too. If you use a headset, remember to run the wire under your shirt and clip your collar. If not, be ready for a tanglesome event. Will be using them every time in the woods.

These radios offer the max, which the FCC will allow for this type of radio service. Very nice radios. And by the way, range does depend on conditions; with a ham radio handy talkie with the same wattage output and like (UHF) frequency, a ham operator can easily talk to the astronauts aboard the ISS!

My roommates and I all have dogs who we sometimes walk late at night.It's great to have a walkie talkie and be in constant communication with one another so none of us think twice about being out alone. Ths unit also works well if you're running errands and need to check at the house for an item OR if you're in the store and someone at home forgot to put something on the shopping list. (Saves minutes on your cellphone too!)

The Midland Outfitter Series GXT1050VP4 is no better then any other radios I have used. The GMRS side of the radio will not let you work repeaters for those that are licensed for this service. Range is a joke and the audio could be better the drop in charger only shows when the radios are charging but the light remains on after the battery is fully charged unlike the Talkabout Motorola radios I own. I feel this could shorten the battery life as they are always charging. I called Midland and they told me to charge the radios 8-10 hours max so I don't over charge and damage the batteries. You can not adjust the squelch on these radios as one radio does not hear as well as the other. Another call to Midland was of no help.On the plus side the ear microphones work well and the display is readable day and night.

Controls, convenience, range, displays, instructions, etc. all excellent. The only problem was rather low audio output, either with included earpieces or with optional helmet headsets. Barely enough even at absolute max volume, even at low (motor-scooter) speeds with full helmet. Still an extremely good value; the included earpieces and waterproof cases make these easily worth the added cost over other models.

I purchased this product for hunting purposes. Having the 650 and 850 series, I bought the 1050's to keep up with longer tranmissions. While the 1050 series transmits at longer ranges it doesn't come close to the 36 miles range as advertised. The furthest transmission was 18 miles. I suppose the key word in the product description "is under ideal conditions!". I would love to know what an ideal conditon is. Standing on the Moon with no obsticals in the way? Having the planets all aligned?
Despite my grumblings about never being in ideal conditions, the 1050's are satifactory and a well built product.
Maybe Midland could come out with a two way that transmits out to a hundred miles, therefore achieving a 36 mile transmission claim!

The radios work as advertised and I got a range of 11 miles so far on the first usage, according to Google earth and the ruler function. This was using a high power GMRS radio channel. Will they make 36 miles? Not in my area they probably will not. If your area in flat like Kansas, I imagine that the radio might come close to that claim.
For the price, there was a lot included. The rechargeable batteries were a nice addition as the radios burn through regular AA batteries.
