After shopping various radios of this type this combination was the best deal as it included everything you would need to buy (accessories). The instruction booklet is small and a bit difficult for us seniors to read. You need to really work with the booklet to understand the various settings and functions.

first off , lets face it that the 20 plus mile range is a complete lie that all these manufacturers share. Only way you get those ranges is on the 4th of July between the hours of 3:55 and 4:00pm during a hailstorm with a stampede of wild elephants in your own living room and one baby zebra. Realistically you should expect one mile per watt of power.
It is enough for our use on a 5 acre lot and our neighbors half mile away. The radios are solid and well constructed, they work realistically and are a good buy.

Pros:
(1) Strong radio broadcasting power (leading to longer range).
(2) Splash proof.
Cons:
(1) The above two pros make the device heavier and less portable.
(2) The extra channels are derived from regular FRS/GMRS channels and privacy codes. So they are not real extra channels. Note that the "privacy" codes simply prevent you from hearing other groups' conversations, and your conversations can still be heard by any other groups on the regular channels.
(3) The "extra" channels actually make scanning twice slower because in half of the time the device will be wasting time scanning the same channels but listening to transmissions with certain pre-set "privacy codes" (there is probably only 1 in 1000 chance that someone else is using the exact same "privacy codes").
(4) The charger doesn't switch off when battery capacity is full. Kind of odd since this feature should be standard for Li-ion battery charger. Also the radio's battery capacity indicator is not informative: it can suddenly go from half full to almost empty.
My suggestions:
If you are using a radio in the wild and really depends on it, get this one. Otherwise get the light weight Motorola.
And remember to keep some AA batteries in your backpack; Radios without juice are useless.

Quit wasting money buying cheep Walkie Talkies!
These Rock & Power galore, getting a fair signal even through trees, terrain, works where most cell phones would loose Signal with in about a 3-4 miles distance which is damn impressive for the price!
their so powerful they will blink out my TV and turn on my flood lights out side ;-) ......It sold me on powerful output, and the distance is great too, to say nothing of the weather radio & privacy channels!
Great for Quad riding also in East TN's Royal Blue Riding area

I was looking for a walkie-talkie set for an upcoming multi-country trip. This Midland set came highly recommended by online forums. It has a nice range (few miles at least) on open terrain. It won't penetrate the walls of century old buildings in Spain, so you can't be sitting at home and talking to someone who went to the market half a mile away, but it works perfectly fine if you're on the opposite ends of a square, market, park, or a long street.
As it was mentioned before, desktop charger does not let you know that it's done charging, but I'm guessing it won't do battery packs any damage if they stay in it a little longer.
Headphones that come with it are ugly and hard to wear. They tend to fall off your ear. I would much rather prefer a cell phone style headphones with microphone hanging in the middle.
Another problem I've noticed is the sudden low battery signal. I get a decent several days of talking, but the battery indicator always show full charge. Then, all of a sudden, it starts blinking 'low battery'. No gradual decline in battery charge like cell phone. It's either full or low.

We used these on the ski slopes in the Lake Tahoe area. They worked okay, but the ear bud remote mike was unwieldy and difficult to keep in place. The instructions for setting up privacy channels are impossible to understand. I'm not a radio freak or an communications engineer. I had to keep the radio in my inside coat pocket and several times the scan button would get depressed accidentally rendering the radio useless until the scan was noticed and stopped. Will need to get some kind of holster for the radio and better remote mike with a better fitting headset. Would buy them again.

After careful research of all available GMRS radios on the market, I choose Midlands top of the line GXT series radios. Midland has always made some of the best products over the years and I had to give these a try. I recently moved to a rather remote rural area and felt the need to have some additional ways of communication. The truth is, all of the high end consumer radios no matter that the wattage, are limited in range given the terrain you happen to be in unfortunately. Just to prove this, I did some range testing: 1: Rural w/ trees and some houses from house standing outside to max range in car was 2 miles. 2: Outside hunting with partner, ear pieces, forest canvas, 2 miles with elevation changes, excellent reception with more range easily available if needed. 3: Top of small elevation to house inside was over 3 miles loud and clear, so is it possible to get longer range if there are limited trees and obstructions. All of these tests were on high power (5 watts) and high power channels with privacy codes set.
I will be testing some more this month with various conditions.
Overall, I was very happy with these radio's. They are extremely durable, reliable, and well made.

These 2 way radios exceed my expectations. I haven't had a chance to use them very much but I think I may have gone with a 'bit of over-kill'. I just wanted to use them to keep track of my grandchildren in campgrounds but the range and clarity are much greater than what I needed.
With this said, I would buy the same radios again...Johnny1943

Over all great product I dropped one into a stream pulled it out and let it dry and worked just as good as the day I bought them. Range not quite as good as described

We use these in a security setting, and they work great for the staff to use and the range covers the whole building and parking lot. They are tough to survive the day-to-day use, the sound is clear, no scratchy or ringing only thing is in a environment with a lot of different noises, the person is hard to hear. The battery (overnight charge) will last the whole 9hr shifts, which is great. The only downfall is having to constantly refer to user manual to figure something out, which really isn't a crisis. I would recommend these for almost any setting, especially a security setting.

Short review: Radios are great, work well. However, battery packs went on on BOTH units within a week. I still havent resolved the issue.

I like them, they were what I expected. I have had midland before so nothing new. 36 mile range? No way but I knew this before I got them. I was hoping for a couple mile range through dense woods. I have not yet tried them hunting but I did get 1

These midlands are pretty decent little HTs for what they cost. They are not indestructible, but they are relatively robust--much tougher than most blister pack radios. I've used these in urban environments and in the woods with good results. I got about 1.5-2mi with one RT inside a wood frame house and the other inside a vehicle in a relatively populous, yet wooded area...line of sight was gone after 100 yds and there were lots of trees and houses in between. That is about all I would expect from an MBITR or other military grade 5w TR in those conditions, so I am relatively pleased. In a hunting situation, these worked well, and range was good, although I didn't do an objective test in this environment. Battery life...used these for a 10 hour day on several occasions and the battery meter never dropped, although this was admittedly mostly in receive, with maybe a dozen transmissions over the course of the day. These are an upgrade to the old 950 series, and I wish they retained the scramble function. Although it limited range, it was a neat feature. The only thing that would make these radios better is a TNC or BNC connection for the antenna so you could swap out a more efficient design when required. I use these with the Midland security earpieces, which also work great...good audio, stays in your ear, and works under muff-style hearing protection.
Caveats: You have to charge the included batteries to full charge before attempting to use. Otherwise the pack will probably not work well for you. Read the directions, and you will be fine. They are a NiMH rechargeable pack, and not sure on the self-discharge rate, so you may want to charge fresh before heading out. I use Tenergy low self-discharge NiMH batts in mine and they work great.

Never expect max range out of a radio. Distance and amount of buildings changes everything. Poor quality default headsets. Great features, overall good buy. If using handsfree get a mic. We use the avph8 throatmics which after some adjustment works well. This combo works awesome for our paintball team.

I purchased these radios based on customer reviews on Amazon, Ebay etc. I use these radios for hunting in thick cover in New England. Their range varies from 1/2 mi to 4 mi. This is dependant on terrain. If the cover is thick range is reduced, I expected this when purchasing so I was not disappointed. The rechargeable batteries went from full charge to empty with no middle ground. I used replaceable batteries while out n the woods because I dont trust the rechargeables. Overall these are the most powerful radios you can buy and will give you the best performance available at this time.

this is my first set of radios and they have worked pretty well so far. i read many reviews before i bought these and the reviews seem to be right on. they do not cover a 36 mile range in my experience. i used them in the city i live in and they worked well for about 1.5 miles. i also took them out to my brothers property and they worked well for about 3 miles. that is about what i expected and i am happy with it. i will be using them when i go out hunting and will update my post at that time.

First- these don't work anywhere near the range advertised. They do come with all those accessories and it is a complete package. One of my units has a tendancy to hang and I have to remove the battery and let it reset. Otherwise for around the home or in a store, they work fine. Just get a good price on these.

Works good for small area or out in the open. In the city, you will be lucky to get 2 miles with any radio. I tried these and the motorolas. I took the motorolas back. I like that they are semi water proof too.

I like this product and think you will like it too . I have not used it a lot but it seems dependable and very clear as you do not have to yell into it . I use mine within 300 yards of each other so i can not tell you much as to how far they will reach . I would not class this with the cheaper stuff you can find out there . I had the cheaper stuff and that is why i bought these .

I puchased this radio set to use for 2 way communication with the driver of a racecar in a 24 hour Chumpcar race. My expectations were realistic and I figured, if they don't work well enough then I will have a nice radio set to use for something else. The included headsets will fit under a helmet and are not too uncomfortable. As long as the driver speaks clear and normal and the mic is positioned properly, it works surprisingly well. I wish the headset speaker had just a little more volume though. Range was excellent for what we used it for. Voice clarity is a 7.5 out of 10, but this was used in a racecar. The included re-chargeable battery packs lasted for about 15 hours on high power but the indicator read almost full power until they would no longer transmit. The option to replace the rechargeable battery with standard AA's helped a lot.
This radio set exceeded my expectations. For the price, they worked great.

The walky talky are some how big and heavy. Is just fine. The range in a city with much more traffic and so on is no more than 1 mille, that is already quite ok. I've never used in a free field. In any case is the third one that I used in florida and are surely the best ones.

I place importance on quality communication, as we spend much time driving off road buggies in the mountains of northern AZ, and I have tried many radios. For the money and stated performance category, I would place these Midland Outfitter Series GXT1050VP4 50-Channel 36-Mile Waterproof 2-Way GMRS at the top of the list. I bought to try, the three radio sets with the highest recommendations and these were by far the best for long distance communication. Now long distance is a relative term. I hope no one really expects to be able to use these at 36 miles. In the mountains with several obstructions we got clear sound both ways at about 3 - 4 miles. About 25% more than the others we tried. To get much better you will need to jump up to radios that cost about $150. -$200. each. My only criticism is that all these radios are just way too complicated these days. Too many options. But then I am certainly old school. I just want to be able to talk when I need to. Good luck.

I had been using FRS/GMRS radio for years and my previous model was Motorola T250 and T6400. In comparison, GXT1000 is a bit on the bulky side. Mainly because it is much thicker. Therefore, carrying it in my package can be little awkward. However, the included belt clip works well. The range is far greater then my old GMRS T6400. Testing in a suburb setting, I was able to get reliable range at around 2 miles when both operators are on the ground level, outside of any building. When one operator move to higher ground (fifth floor), the range extended to 5 miles.
The included headset is simply a joke. I can't get to fit on my ear and mic will only pick conversation if I cup my hand around it.
With that said, it is overall still a good value given its build quality and range.
