I bought two sets of these radios to communicate with my videographers on an event shoot. They work great. I save alot time. I normally run audio cables to two-three people but not anymore.

I use these radios for a variety of purposes, and they work really great! I only have two complaints about them: First, whenever I release the PTT button, a very short static sound can be heard on both sides. I'm not sure if this is normal on most radios, but it's a bit annoying. The second complaint is that the antenna appears to be unscrewable, but is not. Besides these features, I have loved these radios, and all the accessories that are included with it!

I am writing this review to save you time and money. I did a side by side real world test with the Midland GXT1000VP4 and the Motorola MR350s. Both good radios, but the Midland is deffinately better. Here is why. The test was done with the radios in town and out of town. My brother was standing in his back yard with one of each of the radios, and I was traveling in my car from location to location to test both range and clarity. The best I did was 2.67 miles with the Motorola. When I mean the best, I actually mean I could hear a word or two, but made out what my brother was saying. The Midland, in the exact same location, same channel, and even used the same hand to talk with, was not struggling at all. The range was not only better, but the clarity of the speaker was like night and day. I also brought along my older 18 mile Cobra radio, with also out performed the Motorolas. Better sound and better range. In four locations, the Midlands could communicate with no problem whereas the Motorolas would not even break the squelch. Before you think anything about it, I had the sensitivity on both radios set correctly and I had both radios on HI power. The Midland, is a bit harder to operate then the Motorola. I give that to the Motorola. I also like the feel of the Motorola better in my hand, but the bottom line is range with clarity, which easily goes to the Midland. The only reason I did not give the Midland an 5 star rating is because I think the user interface is a bit difficult to use. The symbols used to represent the functions of the radio are not the easiest to figure out.

We used these on a trip with 10 cars and they worked great. The reception is clear and once on top of a mountain we were able to talk with another member in a park at least 20 miles away. It made a believer of the distance that they can possibly travel.

Great radios- keep charge longer than others we have used- VERY durable in the outdoors. Audio is great, even around loud tractors - Great for safety in the field

I bought them to maintain contact with my wife when we go to resorts. They work ok for that but the range is in reality only about 2 to 2 1/2 miles,

The radios are durable and work well as far as the range and clarity goes. the hands free use is easy without the headset and a little challenging with the earpiece just because of the proximity to the mouth. Sometimes it catches everything, other times you have to move the mike closer to the mouth to get it to pick up since the boom doesn't stay as close to the mouth as I would like. Using this radio in simple mode also because the instructions on the group, privacy, etc isn't super easy, but I will dedicate some time to it when I can. Overall, a good radio and worth the money.

The Midland GXt TalkA bout ....is great ...I used it on a sports Car touring event and loved it! ... The TalkA- bout was delivered quickly and at a great price!

I purchased the GXT1050 set last year, and proceeded to use them in the deserts and hill country around Tucson and the border areas. I tested them against the new EXRS type radios, and lower-priced VHF handhelds, all in identical conditions. As noted by all users, the range is way off what they are advertised for. Over flat terrain, I could get 4 miles from the GXT's with full battery charges. That's it. The EXRS could get 5 miles, and the VHF got 6 miles. None of them great without repeaters or base stations. In another world, I'd challenge Midland to prove the range, even come close, under the most optimum conditions. They're getting away with some serious exaggeration. So, caveat emptor.

This is an update to the original review below. After three months of low usage, one of the units quite transmitting long range. I have done everythiing I could do to check the settings, batteries, and it just fails to transmit more than 500 feet clearly, were before I could get a clear voice about 1 mile away. As i feared in the first review, this unit was built cheaply, and I will then assume that the circuit board was built cheaply as well. I would not buy this unit again.
The sound quality is good. It is a little larger then I would like, but it has some very nice features. The case is a bit cheap. The display is easily scratched and not fit for hiking or outdoor use. That might seem a bit hard of a review, but with other products using a hard clear plastic that doesn't scratch. It should not be a stretch to fix this issue. One of the units came with a scratched display and that is what made me mention it. I should have sent it back, but didn't want the shipping hassle. Short of being a inferior case, the radio works well. Maybe it would be a good idea to keep it in a bag of sorts.

I bought 6 sets of this product (Midland GXT1050VP4) and read the reviews, I saw some bad ones but ignored them, now I wish I had not.There are a few still working but they are failing weekly one by one,so they do work well for a few weeks and then die, the lucky people find the bad ones right off the bat before the return issues come in to play.I just started finding the problems now 5 to 6 weeks later and it would be a problem trying to sending them back now.they are truly junk but look nice at first. They would be good for your kids for a week or two,but other than that they are pretty junk.

The product appears well made, has a decent feel in the hand and easy to operate. Two issues I'm not thrilled about. One is that the range is very exaggerated. I get decent coverage up to a quarter mile in a flat city. That's it, no more. No big buildings or mountain obstructions. In another part of town, I tried highrise to another highrise 4 miles away. No obstructions. Nothing. Ok, so if you are close by, they are great. Just keep that in mind on your next camping trip. The second issue is that the batteries must be removed from the charger once they are charged. I guess I'm getting spoiled but isn't that the 1990's?

We took a big family cruise last year and tried to use cheap $50 walkie talkies we purchased on the ship. With limited channel this was a complete waste of money. We went again this year along with 5 pairs of these walkie talkies and they rocked! I was worried with all the metal on the world's largest ship we would have interference, but there were absolutely no problems. We had no issues with privacy due to the sub-channels, they were clear, held their charge for a long time and were very useful in port.
We did have an issue with 2 of the 10 we purchased that got locked up and the screen went blank. I took out the battery for a few minutes put it back in and they were fine.

These radios work pretty good. I didn't use any of the extra features, just put them on a channel and used them for basic talking. Used them on our move between 2 cars from Virginia to Tennessee. They may have went about a mile apart if we were lucky, but they did do what we needed them to do, and that was communicate between the two cars. Not a bad purchase, will use them for camping, etc. in the future.

This is the second Midland product I've purchased, and both have malfunctioned. About four days after these radios were shipped to me, one of them stopped working while sitting on my shelf. I had left it on overnight for the NOAA weather alert feature and the next morning I saw that the display was off. The battery was fully charged (verified with the other radio), but it wouldn't turn back on, not even plugged into the charging stand. I didn't want to deal with the hassle of refunding through Amazon and purchasing a new one (they wouldn't just replace it), so I mailed it in to Midland to have it looked at, under the 3-year warranty. I expected them to pay for the shipping since their product malfunctioned (under extremely light use), but I had to pay for it.
I'd like to leave an excellent review for this set of radios because they seem like good radios. But it's hard to have any confidence in Midland after my personal experience with these radios and their weather radio (the weather radio lasted about a month before it stopped working).
I haven't had the radios long enough to test their features: range, clarity, etc.

Thus far these radios have performed well. I have not tested the maximum range but the weather bands have already come in helpful. I have seen them at other stores and amazon has the best price so far especially with free shipping. Once I get a chance I will be using them more. They definitely seem to be a quality item.

I read the reviews. I ignored them thinking some people just can't read the instructions.
There is something wrong with the battery pack on these units and/or charging base. I have one unit that will charge up, the other seems DOA. On the unit(s) if I can get the other to charge, put them on the charger for 5 minutes and it reports they are fully charged.
Midland use to have good products, these are crap!

Well I have had mine since January. Not sure why, but one of the units stopped working, nothing comes up when it is turned on. I can tap it on the bottom and the screen will light up for a fraction of a second. - Battery not loose, but rather maybe something inside?? - Sending back for RMA.

I have had these radios for about a year, and have put them through some fairly intense trials to test their durability, functionality and range.
After kicking, stomping, throwing, and submersion in water, they have surprisingly endured this past year. They have an extremely long battery life under heavy use. They are exceptionally durable in some of the worst conditions; whether it be a snowy field, sandy beach or heavily wooded area. These walkies talkies have survived anything and everything I have put them through. They are like the energizer bunny...they just keep going and going and going. The sound quality is very clear and crisp, the whisper mode is everything it's cracked up to be. The Weather Alert is extremely handy for severe weather conditions. Now you are probably wondering when this idiot is going to talk about the range on these radios. While in the mountains of Tennessee, I was hiking on some trails I got about 2.7 miles range on them. They aren't going to get a maximum range unless you are in an area like a desert. Over all I am extremely satisfied with the purchase I made when purchasing these radios. I would Definitely recommend these! And in the future I would buy them again.

Plenty of other reviewers, on this site and others, have warned about how to interpret the stated range of this and similar models, so I won't go into that but to say they're right - take those figures with a grain of salt and know that essentially all similar radios share this characteristic.
The purpose of my purchase was to maintain communication between two groups on a day hike to and from Mt LeConte Lodge in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. They were easy to carry, easy to operate, and had very clear audio quality. Great additions to our collection of outdoor gear! Now we find we use them around the farm and neighborhood often, as cell phone service is poor at the best of times.

The radios are just one month old and used four days a week. Already, one of the four does not work. I can hear them, but they can't hear me. Not happy at all.

Dec 2011 I bought a second pair of these units (first pair in Aug 2009). They work well. Sound is good. Had a problem with one and after 2 years I sent it back under warranty and they sent a new one. That's excellent customer service and standing behind your product. I give them a big thumbs up for their warranty. My one gripe is the charger. It takes 12 hours to charge the Ni-MH battery and there's no green light to tell you it's done. Don't know if it controls the charge properly or what happens if you charge a partially discharged battery. 12 hours is too long for work radios, IMHO. Otherwise good units. Also check out the TriSquare eXRS units.

This set of Camo two-way radio by Midland was what I was looking for, I've had no problems with them and they are user friendly. My son and I use them for our hunts, and they alow us to utilize our hunting ground so that we can be best positoned to get our kill. The battery life is excellent and they are durable as well. I hope you this helps you out.
