the range that is promised does NOT exist. I was lucky to get almost a mile. It was easy to use but the only time I got a mile range was when their was almost nothing between the 2 radios.

Got these and tested. Do not expect the "up to 36 miles" on the box. No FRS/GMRS are capable of these claims even with no trees, no buildings, no interference, nothing and I doubt it would work then. In the salt flats or even the dessert, I just dont see how they would work. I did a number of tests with the GXT1000VP4 one was where I left one talkie at the house and drove with the other in the car...not a mile and it was not transmitting anymore. Next was outside...partially wooded area...we could only do a 1/2 mile for that was the end of the winding street and it worked great. These arent the loudest either and they are not the easiest to use. But they are packed with features. Also they are not waterproof...the are splashproof. You cannot submerge them. Battery seem to work alright and I like that you can use AA with them in a pinch. I also like the car charger option. They are also rated for 5-watts...I think the Moto are not but I hear the Moto do well for range as good at least as the Midlands. The midlands are packed with extras and features, AC charger, Car charge, belt clip, NiMH. If you are going to use them in a boat get a floating one from Motorola MS350, they float come in a bright color to find them and they have a weak LED light...but still it is a light. They are also easier to use!! The Uniden GMR3699-2CK is also a nice choice that floats but I dont believe they use AA like the Moto or the Midland do. With any of these 2-way radios expect about 2 miles in the woods at best of range.

Good value, long range. Sound is really clear and the batteries last a long time. This is just want I needed for long distance outdoor communication.

I like all the options of the radio, but the range is more limited than my old Cobra radio. Even on rather level terrain, the range was slightly over 1 mile for most of the time. Haven't used it in the mountains, but not expecting the range to be as hoped. Otherwise, I'm pleased with the radio.

The guys was a big upgrade from my old Motorola radios. I live in mountainous terrain and the range was about 1mile on high output. I consider this very good in my area. Good features build is good and looks nice. Would recommend.

I've had quite a few sets of walkies in my life and these are great. Unless covering huge distances I don't think you could ask for anything more. The weather band is a great plus too!

I have been using midland radios now for communications on one of my locations. They work well, range is good, but they battery life is terrible. After about 6 months I had to be buying replacement batteries because they just wont hold the charge. Apart from that I dont really have any complaints.

Disappointed in the range. They were no better than the older radios I had.
Push to talk button for us was not as easy to use as the older radios.
Many other features that are nice, but we really didn't need them.
Sound seems to be clearer than our older radios.

these radio's do not hold a charge. they do not reach 36 miles the don't reach 1 mile. they look great.. they come with lots of stuff but in the end not worth the time or money..

Purchase these for a road trip, and it was perfect buy.
We drove 10 hours and were able to hear one and other (150+ others) the entire time.
Helped us to cop spot, and just good old conversation on a very long trip.

It was a gift for my son who likes to hunt. He was pleased that he could in touch with his hunting buddy in an area where there is little cell coverage. Particularly like the SOS feature.

Best buy for your dollar. Includes charger for 120v and for automobile, includes ear pieces and microphone for silent operation and many operating options you would expect in higher priced models. Very satisfied.

I bought these for my small business operation. Sound quality is great and range is adequate for my needs, haven't tested it's limits though. The headsets are useless, but the radios themselves are good.

They are great radios but they really can't make the distance they advertise. If you are in the middle of the Plains where there are no treees, Mts., structures, then yes 30 miles would be the long range. Otherwise they are pretty good radios.

I bought these for use while kayaking, either from kayak-kayak or kayak-shore. I wasn't expecting 36 miles like the package stated, but was hoping they would work over 3-5 miles of open water.... They didn't. They did work kayak-kayak over a hundred yards or so, at least for awhile, then they wouldn't work over a few feet. I'm guessing the water damaged them even though they are rated JIS4 Waterproof (Protection in all directions against light rain or splashing water) because as the day wore on they progressively got worse. By mid day you couldn't hear the other person at all. The call signal came through loud and clear but the voice was unrecognizable.
I'm attempting to send these back for warranty return. I missed my window on Amazon by 2 days so I'm hoping Midland will honor their warranty and refund my money. I'm going to replace these with actual marine vhf radios. They will be more than double the price but it's worth it if they work.
Bottom line, if you are planning to use these on the water, save your money and buy marine radios.

Midland advertises these radios as waterproof, they are not! We bought ours to use when camping and took them out for the first time this weekend. One fell out of my pocket into the grass at our campsite and I didn't notice it missing until the next morning. It rained overnight and the display was fogged over with moisture. I took the battery out and placed it in front of a small fan for 24hrs. The moisture dried out but the radio would no longer transmit. I'm sending them back for an exchange and hope I can keep the next set dry. If they aren't waterproof they shouldn't advertise them as such.

Great product. Very powerful for a GMRS. Charging setup is very nice and convenient. Rechargable batteries hold a charge very well. Only downside is the ear piece. Their configuration makes them almost impossible to use.
