I read the reveiws before I bought these, most of them were just fine, but some of them spoke of defect. I have these in 4 locations and over 10 walkies, they all work great. Don't hesitate to buy them.
They are bulkier than I would like, but hey... for the price??

The range on these guys is of course nowhere near what's advertised, but that is to be expected since nobody will ever be using these under the optimal conditions that get you the 36 mile range.
I bought these and used them for several events at work. They don't do anything remarkable but get the job done. We were mostly using them in a few different hotel convention centers, so not really pushing the limits of the range probably and the battery life stood up well for our needs (3-5 hours of constant use).

These are great radios and probably the best you can buy for the price. After buying one set, I had to reservations buying another (not replacement, just needed two more).

I love these walkie Talkies ! They rule, but there is no way on Earth they transmit 36 miles. Maybe if I was in a hotair baloon and the other person I was talking to was in a hotair baloon 36 miles away..well maybe then..But battery power lasts a long time, I like the weather station setting, also my kids like the animal call alerts, especially the cougar one.. Yeah I could listen to the weather station all day, everyday, but my wife turns it off..

These are reliable and have come in handy for vehicle-to-vehicle communication. Used for a cross-country move and with motorcycle helmet setup. My only issue is that I wish the battery life lasted a little longer. When we needed them for all-day communication during the move, the battery was dying by the end of the day when we were trying to find a hotel and needed to communicate the most. Otherwise, love these and would buy them as a gift!

I had problems with this going more than 1 mile before I lost communication. It was an overcast sky in mountainous terrain. Extremely dissapointing. I wouldn't waste your money on these. They might go 36 miles at a straight shot but unless you are riding with everyone in your group don't buy these. I will try them again now that I am out of the mountains but so far I am going to return these.

I use this product mostly on ATV / Gun ranges, canoe to canoe and car to car to save on cellular minutes. It is hard to believe that it will reach the distance it is advertised but it does reach out acceptably far. The hills of East TN are not known for their expansive line of sight usage so I expect that is why I question its range. CONS: The ear phone assembly is a pain in the arse and not very comfortable - Keeping it old fashioned PTT - Also they are supposed to be water proof but the instructions say not to submerse (not that I plan to talk under water - but accidents do happen). If they are "water proof" then that should not be a limitation. The battery cover is a bit rinky-dink and could easily come off if not careful. I now use packing or duck tap just to make sure the cover release is not caught on stuff. There are a number of settings and the font used to indicate each setting is not very clear and uses abbreviations which require the instruction manual to interpret. Given the advances in electronics - seems they could have simply spelled out the setting in a clear font. XXX over all - it is a quality product despite my listed Cons.

The Midland GTX 36 MIle 50 Channel Two-Way Radio works great. My son uses it on a 90 acre parcel and has no problems at all.

We bought these for our son and he loves them! He and his friends have had a lot of fun outside using these while playing "spy missions". They've even been great when he goes over to his friends house, he takes one and I have one and we can stay in contact when needed. Very durable!

Both rechargeable batteries completely failed within only six months with light use. I am currently using multiple AAA batteries. As with all portable radios, the listed range of transmission/ reception represents fantasy not reality. The radio otherwise performs well.

Like the description says, 36 miles in open water, also assuming that if we were in air planes, that would be 36 miles too. The furthest I got out of it was about 2 miles in the burbs, and that was really staticky. The city gave me about 1 mile. Other than that, it works good. The animals sounds are cool, as are the features that I may never use. A little bulky, but it'll work. It beats pulling out my phone to text my hunting partner in a cold tree stand though. Just press the button and whisper.

I purchased these for the purpose of coordinating different camera people and making sure everybody had their stuff working. These work wonderfully and they look the part too. I read other reviews and purchased the Midland AVPH3 Translucent Security Headsets with PTT/VOX for not much more. No way was I going to have our company image looking goofy with the "Britney Spears" looking ear/mic on my folks. They love these and they look very professional. Range is overkill so sound quality in an arena is perfect and they are compact. Saw only one bar lower on the battery after a 5 hour long event. 5 stars

I have nothing bad to say about these radios, they provide tons of fun and great for communicating with friends while hunting,hiking,fishing,camping, and concert going. I have experienced a 10 Mile range with these on flat ground with just a bay in between us (supposed to work best over water)

You would have to be on the ocean maybe to get 36 mile range. My gf and I work about 5 miles from each other I'm in a 5 story building on a hill over looking the city. Still lose her when she gets about half way between me and her job. Will have to come up with another plan for backup communications.

Use these radios up state at our cabin. As long as the Kids don't go over the Mountian I can talk to them. My friend ordered the base station from Amazon and that works great to. The only issue I see with the basre is that you can't hook up a external antenna up to it. At first I thought you could unscrew it, but it's not that easy. I am still gonna order one thought.

Before taking the plunge and buying these radios I noticed that several customers reported DOA reciept of same, while the majority were very impressed with their performance. I decided to take the chance and buy. I charged the radios exactly as instructed, and after running them down and recharging them, one failed to work at all. I then found out how incredibly easy it is to return a product bought from Amazon, and was extremely impressed in this regard.
I live in Nicaragua, and by the time another set was to be recieved, I knew I would be back home so I sent them to a friend that was coming down to visit a few weeks later. I instructed her how to charge them, and the EXACT same problem occured, but only after I got them here, which was 2 days after the 30 day return requirement.
I requested a phone call back to me from Amazon customer service (I use a skype USA number here) and got a call back in SECONDS(!). After explaining my rather unique situation to Jim, the customer rep., he said that because of my location and previous problems he would wave the 30 day requirement for returns, but suggested that i contact the MFG. first, and that he would call me back in a week in my stipulated time frame to arrange for new units to be shipped to a USA address of my choice and that I could take up to 90 days to send back the bad set!!
I called Midland, and as expected did not get any self servicing help, so decided to take the offending radio apart. Everything is solid state, but there are four chrome plated contacts on the back that lead from the batteries that are designed to mate with 4 brass rings on the other half of the radio when assembled. I carefully beny out all four chrome contact points slightly to increase the pressure when assembled and contacting the 4 brass rings,and the radios have worked perfectly ever since. I am EXTREMELY impressed with their performance and feel, and highly reccommend them. And yes, Jim called me back at the prescribed hour a week later, and I was happily able to tell him that I resolved the issue myself.
To say that I am impressed with how Amazon conducts business is to put it lightly, and will continue to purchase everything I possibly can from them. In the meantime, The repair I have described is an easy 5 screw job, and I'll bet that it solves virtually all the DOA complaints about this otherwise superb piece of equipment!

I am writing this review to unsuspecting folks that will read the 36 mile range and belive that???? I have no idea how any of the radio manufactures dare to print that sort of hogwash as it actually makes NO difference WHO makes the radio two things prevent that from ever happening. One is that the FCC limits the amount of power these radios can output and that number is 5 watts on the newer upper channels. These radios are broadcasting on 462 mhz and that is considered the UHF is has an advantage over lower bands in its ability to penetrate buildings or concreate and that sorta thing . However its ability to broadcast long distances with out high gain antennas or lots of power is very limited. The ham radio folks have had the 440mhz band for years and it is just under this family radio frequency . They consider there handhelds in this band [UHF]with the same power 2-3 miles of range thru the woods in normal conditions. For Midland to claim these radios will talk 36 miles is a total farse and compleatly untrue!!! It is an advertising fraud and they should be fined for it as thousands of folks will buy these to find out a couple of miles is MAX. I would say the only possible way these radios will comumicate 36 miles would be right straight up into space and that is questionable................. DONT BELIEVE IT YOU WILL BE SORRY!!!!!

These radios are a pretty good tool for the price. The batteries last pretty long, however, the range does not seem to be as good as 50 miles when around multiple obstructions.

Beware! This product was advertised and labeled as waterproof. It is not. Ours was dropped in water and immediately ceased working. The product description has been changed to define waterproof as able to handle light rain or splashing. That may be true, but that was not previously defined, and the packaging says "WATERPROOF." Now you know.

Radio works as stated. Have a previous pair from 2000 that have worked very well during the hunting season. Have added hunters and adding radios.
