The range is far less then advertised but it meets my needs. Only used them once so far and the range was what I expected in the mountains of Utah.

my 7 year old nephew had a lot of fun with these out in the woods behind his house, the animal calls were cool.. but the range isn't even .6 miles... come on... I could have bought toys that would reach that distance.. it's really quite infuriating... there is no returning them at this point... but I would if I could... although he has fun with them with his friends, one reason I bought them was as a security measure in that we would keep one at home base in case something happened out in the woods or if we needed the kids to come back to the house... that isn't likely to be possible with this limited range... he definitely explores beyond half a mile.. I feel ripped off...

These radio's have been faithfully serving our organization for years. They can be a little confusing to use at first. The menus are ridiculously complex. It's really hard to figure out how to change channels the first time you use them. They also display many indecipherable acronyms on their screens but luckily we don't use those functions at all.
The range is great. We've used them in downtown, urban environments. At one event held at the Grand Hyatt, we could communicate with the ballroom from suite on the 20th floor with no static. Very impressive.

I was looking for multiple radios for our local theatre. I am a board member and we were looking for an inexpensive way to communicate with each other during a play. A complete set that includes headsets. These are perfect.

I bought this radio set to use for communications in a car club. On some of our drives we will have as many as thirty cars and are spaced out for at least two miles from the lead to the tail. It is imperative that we be able to communicate between cars for routing instructions and safety on the road. This radio does a great job and has no problem of delivering dependable communications on the road under a variety of conditions. This radio will transmitt with a full 5 watts and is very clear. I would recommend this set to anyone without reservation.

I bought this set for my husband and his buddy when they go fly fishing in their kayaks. They have ruined several sets and these are supposed to be waterproof! They said they were awesome, far superior than the 3 sets they purchased!!

Great radios. Midland always has good quality stuff. I actually prefer it over motorola. The more extensive section of earpieces is also awesome.

Radios work great,and made well.Nice sound,batterys great,and drop in charger nice.Son and I use for our motorcycle, works ok,but headsets not the greatest fit.vox function works well.

Worked very well on a road trip. I had one instance in which one unit stoped working, The battery was charged, I removed the replaced the same battery and it started working, suspect a bad battery connection?

Used it to stay connected with a buddy at a convention and it worked great. I will say that I didn't actually use the earpieces that came with it, we used the Transparent Security Headsets (both for convenience and for the "Secret Service" factor LOL) so I can't really speak to any issues others may have had with the mics that are included.

Purchased the GXT1050 for hunting. I hunt in a mountainous area where there are a lot of obstructions. I don't have a lot of experience with radios, but it seems if there is any obstruction at all, the performance suffers greatly.
Furthermore, after a few times in the field, one of the radios died (would not turn on). It was not the battery, as the battery on the other unit still worked, and I tried changing it out. I called Midland to get some help and played phone tag with them multiple times. When I finally got someone, she said to put alkaline batteries in it, and if that didn't work, just take it back to the store.
I understand that lemons happen, but it's disappointing nonetheless.

I was overall quite satisfied with these radios. I got them to use while skiing with a novice skier, so I could tell her to avoid things, wait, veer left, etc. without having to yell. I also picked up 2 Midland AVPH8 Acoustic Throat Mics for GMRS Radios to use with these radios. The throat mics are ideal for a skiing use, as it allows you to speak without having to involve your hands at all -- although it does require a bit of training with younger users to wait until the broadcaster stops broadcasting, before trying to reply, and to also speak more than one word, in order to get the throat mic to pick up the broadcast. I loved the broad selection of channels, and privacy options. We have never once heard anyone else using the same channel+privacy setting to broadcast, as we were on. The range on the units was also more than sufficient for our needs, at most, the furthest we get away from each other is maybe 200 meters, usually less than 50 meters, and so we never once had a range issue for communication.
So, my only gripe with the units is the battery life. The rechargeable batteries that come with the unit, even fully charged, don't last more than 4 hours of continual use. So, the next time we went up on the mountain, I brought along disposable batteries to pop into the units, once the rechargeables ran out. It isn't a huge problem, but it would have been nicer if the batteries lasted at least 8 hours. When I said 4 hours of continual use, I did mean it, however. The throat mics pick up most noises you make, opening a broadcast channel even if you aren't talking. So, I am aware my use of the throat mic ran the batteries down faster than if I was using the PTT button method, so bear that in mind when you read this.

The reception is not like the stated range, its like any other radio's out there unless you are on a large body of water with a clear line of sight. The best feature are the interchangeable batteries between the rechargeable and 4 AA batteries. The vibration alert is also a good feature when you don't want to hear a beep. Don't have to spend the money on this particular pair of walkie talkies when you can spend half as much for the same quality reception radioes.

I ordered this pair for a fishing/ kayak trip. I was delighted that the packaging read 'waterproof' when it came. The range was fair... about 3/4 to 1 mile range on the FRS and maybe double that on GMRS on the water and around town. I've had 2 other walkie sets previously with about the same range. What I like about these is the solid feel.
The very first day on the water, I dropped one overboard and it took a minute to retrieve it, but it floated, and it even worked for a few minutes before it cut out and died. Later I opened the battery casing and dried it out in a bowl of rice. It worked just fine again with no probs. I would have given this product a 5 star, but it wasn't fully waterproof. Probably ok in wet weather I'm guessing. This is the 2nd pair of Midlands I've owned in 10 yrs and the other pair works fine accept for the rechargeable batteries- I use disposable ones now as it no longer holds a good charge. Midland makes a solid product.

I bought these mainly for when we travel on family vacations. I needed something when we take 2 vehicles, to communicate back and forth between each. I tested these on a country road with open fields. I got to 6 miles before it was so staticky I could not hear and lost reception. I drove back 1/2 mile and it picked right back up. Again this is open field. Read the fine print on these. 36 miles is on a perfect day over water not urban or country settings. Not even close in normal realistic settings. maybe 5 miles at most it what they should be labeled. But if your looking for a radio to communicate thats water resistant and has a lot of great functions then I would recommend. IF your need 36miles good luck on that!!

I purchased 3 sets of these radios for my business and I am so disappointed. The batteries will not charge on 3 of the units. All 6 of the units work sporatically. I chose these units because of the name and what I was told they would do and I'm here to tell you that I could have gotten MUCH cheaper units that would probably have been better. I would definitely NOT recommend this to anyone.

Nice radios was disappointed in the distance, for I was only able to get about 1-1 1/2 miles distance out of them.
