These radios are awesome. I took them to Jamaica and they performed wonderfully all along the beach into the hotel, and elsewhere around town.
Battery Life: Lasts for days if you are just listening, otherwise transmitting will use up power. My girlfriend used them to gab with her friend for a full hour on the maximum power setting before they got low and had to be recharged. They are rechargable and the dock is easy to use, so you don't have to feel stingy about using them since you can just plop it on the dock.
Range: Great range. I took them to Negril's 7-Mile-Beach and they worked fine from several miles down the beach to inside the hotel where we were staying. These radios have a power setting, so ensure you are on "H" (high) power to get the maximum range. Back home, I was able to go through buildings and obstructions and hear clearly a mile or two away from my apartment.
NOTE REGARDING RANGE: the "36-mile" range is only for ideal conditions, e.g. you are both in the middle of an empty desert on a clear day, perched on top of a cactus with tin foil wrapped around your head. Nobody really gets the full listed range of any radio and you should understand that when purchasing. However, radios tend to use the same "ideal condition" numbers, so a 22-mile radio will be less powerful than this 36-mile radio. If your goal is maximum power you can still use this number to compare the power levels of different models. These particular radios have a diagram on the back of the box listing some shorter ranges you can expect in the woods, urban areas, etc.
Clarity: The other party was always clear as a bell. They really sound great. Sometimes I would her other walkie-talkie users on the channel and they didn't sound as good, so I think the clarity has to do with a good microphone in this device, as well as the high power with which they transmit. I never had any choppy or unintelligible transmissions from these radios. I wish my cell phone sounded this good.
Physical form factor: They are bulky compared to small cheap radios, but not so bulky that they don't fit in a pants pocket. I don't know how durable they are since I haven't broken or damaged one, but we did use one in light rain and it was fine. (I haven't tried the included headsets).
Ease of Use: This was the best point to this product. I suggest sitting with the radios and reading through the manual, trying out the settings. This only took me about ten minutes. The manual is clear and the menu system is intuitive (basically, just keep pressing the menu button to scroll through all the options. To exit the menu at any point, press the talk button).
Ease of Use for someone else: Before I gave a radio to someone else I first activated the key lock, which disables all buttons except for Talk, Call, and the volume/power knob. This way my friends and girlfriend could easily use the radio without having to really learn anything. They weren't able to accidentally change channels or butt-dial a configuration change which would have cut them off from the group.
All in all I'm thrilled with these radios. I've gone through several walkie-talkie sets over the years and these are by far the nicest I have encountered.

Received ahead of expected date. Works as advertised out of Box. Only thing I didn't like was extremely small manual. How ever I was able to down load full size manual from web site.

I got these for kids to play with and to go hunting. Lots of options and codes on radio are not self explanatory. You will need to read directions closely. Kids love them good battery life.

I bought 2 sets and one of the radios speaker was bad. I had to send it in. Not what i wanted. The others are working just fine.

Loved the Radio's that I ordered. The Description lead me to believe that the radios did not come with headsets, so I ordered a pair. Well to my Suprise I received the headsets, Radios, and the radios Came with Head sets. Some how, I doubled my order, so I received a total of 4 radios. This all worked out cause I was able to use the extra radios. They are as rugged as the commercial radio's that I have used for 22 years in enforcement use. I am also a licensed HAM radio operator and these radios are near to equal quality to my other equipment. The Weather alert feature on these radio's are great. I have also implemented the use of one of these radios for elder-care leaving one with my elderly mother who lives only a hundred yards or so from my residence and she has the comfort of calling me anytime she wants as a intercom use between homes. My kids and I use the others in our summer activities, and soon in our winter activities, on snowmobiles unstinting the hands free feature VOX and Head sets in our helmets. This is a much cheaper alternative to other VOX's for helmets. Thank you Amazon.

We bought it mostly for our family purposes and have to say that it is of great quality and extremely useful for older kids when they go play outside to keep in contact. It is a must for any long walks, camping, traveling, etc.

wow...where to start? The package came with everything i could have asked for in accessories. The purchase of some NiMh batteries and some different chargers have made this an even better purchase. The range and reception were much better than expected so far......will know more when up in the trees. the channels 23-50 are a plus....this seems to be one of the very few handhelds made that are equipped to go above channel 22. Read the manual....then read it again.....then take it with you as you road test these radios. It will save you some frustration. These were an exceptional purchase, and I will be buying more

Have not tested the 36 mile range but during our recent trip to the mountains, we had no trouble communicating.
I would recommend these to any motorcycle group. A low cost way to have quality communications.

Radios worked great for 4 months. One of the batteries died and the Midland customer service rep said that the battery is considered an accessory and only covered for 90 days. According to Meridian-Webster, The radio should work without "accessories".

I used these with my school theater productions and they served us well. They were easy to use, functional, and came with everything we needed except the batteries. These were a great price for our limited budget.

Bought these for local family members in case cell-phones don't work.
1. Boasts "50 Channels"!!! However, Channels 23-50 simply duplicate the frequencies of Channels 1-22.
2. These higher channels do come with a "Privacy Code" but unfortunately their PL codes (and frequencies) are fixed/not programmable.
3. Operator's Manual is unnecessarily difficult and incomplete.
4. The Manual's explanation of "Group" functionality is incomprehensible. Any advantage of the "Group" is negated its complexity and non-fail-safe operation.
5. Also, the manual which comes with the unit has such tiny print, I needed a magnifying glass to read it.

I bought these to use out doors with my daughters bike ridding , camping ext.
They are awesome easy to use they hold the charge for the entire outdoor adventure.
The range is about right in the open but in the city the range is about six miles over all it's a great product to have again very easy to use and it's also a plus that the package includes two ear pieces and a car charger and you can also use batteries for it tremendous value for the buck...

keep the instructions tho as these radios do a lot...lotsa options that can be confusing if you want to use them to the fullest but overall easy to operate if you keep it simple.

I bought 2 sets of these to use at our business. They work well even through buildings. The range we use them is about 300 feet, so not far. They seem to hold their charge pretty well, and one was dropped and it still works fine.

Don't understand the negative reviews. These do as advertised, if you have realistic expectations. These are SHORT range if you don't have a repeater as with any radio.

If you need to talk to your family while hiking, walking in the park, or keep tabs on your kids at a country fair, they work great. .Good for emergencies when coordinating with others in the immediate area.
If you need to reach somebody 36 miles away (as the product title suggests), do not buy - no gmrs two-way handheld radio can do it. Instead, get a 50+ watt dual band ham radio (after passing ham license test) and a rooftop or mobile high gain antenna. So no five stars due to the outrageous claim.
I liked the accessories as well, ear pieces and all.
FYI, there aren't 50 channels allocated for frs/gmrs, these radios get up to 50 by repeating channels with pre-coded PL tones. Also, PL tone only ensures that you will not hear others on the same channel, interfering with your conversation - they will still hear you.

These are rated to be able to talk for 36 miles. You could barely here each other after 1/2 mile. So these were returned.

Range and customization is nice. The headpieces suck - don't let that be a selling point. They're really, really awful. The only possible way to make them less awful is to break out tape and start sticking it to your head so the microphone isn't a mile away and the thing doesn't keep sliding out from under your ear at the ear clip portion. Back to the radios. They are quiet. Other people said it, I ignored it, I shouldn't have. I take these radios with me on the streets for communication during protests and other things of that nature, and when people are chanting or the street noise is high, you can have it on max volume and only just barely hear as if a whisper what other people are shouting. Without background noise, it sounds fine. I just bought a tactical throat mic to compliment the radio and it helps. So basically, you're going to need to buy extra equipment with this if you intend to do anything with the radios besides chat in a silent environment.
