and I love the camo
I like taking it on fishing trips and out on hikes
But my real problem with these radios is their design. The PTT button on this model is not good. I understand they added a significant amount of weatherproofing, which makes it more difficult to push. It does not have a distinctive click on/off like my older GXT-400's and more pressure is required to hold it in. This makes it uncomfortable to use and difficult to know if the button is fully engaged or if the radio is transmitting. And the situation is made worse if you use gloves. The button feels more like pushing your finger into a thick piece of dense rubber rather than pushing a button. My other issue - not really a deal breaker - is that the menu system is not intuitive. The modes are not clearly labled and using several of the radio's features requires even a tech-oriented person like myself to carefully study the manual. Playing around with it for some time, I couldn't even figure out how to use the weather radio portion.
To be fair, these do feel fairly rugged, the antenna is a good length, the backlit screen is bright and clear, and the other buttons and knobs are pretty good. It is a good size and easy to hold. I also like the fact that it uses 4 standard AA batteries rather than a proprietary battery pack like those from Cobra. But the PTT button problem I mentioned really ruined the experience for me.
AS AN ALTERNATIVE: the Midland GXT760 & GXT795 are essentially the same radio but without the extra weatherproofing and have much better PTT buttons. So if you don't mind learning the menus, these models are overall probably the best consumer FRS/GMRS radios on the market for range and build quality. However, if you already own an older pair of 4 or 5 watt Midland GMRS radios, you may not find any of these a significant upgrade.
