I will most certainly recommend this product to people I know
receiver. Range is obviously the most misunderstood thing about GMRS; while with suggested range (more is better), don't expect what is printed. My experience with the GXT1000VP4 two-ways has been superior to my other GMRS/FRS units. I've gotten between two and three miles of range with acceptable clarity (some minimal static) in residential neighborhoods. Further range (about ten miles) was obtained over marshlands from small island to island situations. I've personally obtained upwards of THIRTY miles with similar GMRS radios (high altitudes in canyons and open deserts). With FIVE watt (5W) power in these handhelds it's likely they'll do just as well.
These handhelds are JIS4 water resistant(splash and light rain tolerant), NOT submersible. Can the handheld survive a short three second drop in some water? I've seen them take it and continue working 100%.
Belt clips feel nice and solid; clip on and off easily, but hold strong once attached. The radios feel just solid to me. Compared to some other "bubble pack" GMRS/FRS two-ways these feel pretty professional.
The included battery packs have been absolutely impressive. Charge the new radios for 24 hours for the first time. This initial charge time is very important and will prime the battery packs correctly for great life and runtime. [I recommend an outlet timer to regulate charge time so not to overcharge the batteries] After that initial 24Hr charge, charge the radios for 12Hrs (from dead) every time. I get about two to three days of power using these radios in a 30% talk/receive 70% standby situations. Many of my other brands don't come close to that kind of battery life. If using four double-A batteries (alkaline or lithium) you can expect more use time.
These handhelds clip into their charger nice and strong; the charger even comes with an automotive power adapter (cig-lighter plug).
As a savvy radio user I highly recommend these radios. I'll be continuing to purchase Midland handhelds of all types thats for sure.
Cons: The off/on volume knob can be knocked and position changed.
It has ~50 channels, but how the channels above 23 are used is not explained.
Uses either 4 alkaline cells or a NiMH battery pack, but no way to use inidividual NiMH cells.
Probably should have bought the model that uses lithium-ion cells
Bottom line, these are FRS/GMRS radios, people. Clearly the 36 mile advertisement is highly misleading, but you should already know that if you do some research. If you want long range communication, get HAM radios and a technician license or just spring for some portable CBs. Assuming I didn't just get lucky and Midland doesn't have quality control problems, I think these should be fine for light duty at short to medium range depending on terrain.
brought 4 of these of 3 different cruises.
works 50% of the time.
if you are close to the edges of the ship, it will work.
will not work "through" the ship at all.
these are not miracle workers.
also watch out what countries you take these to, as some cruise port countries gmrs is illegal.
after just under 1 year, one of the included rechargeable batteries pooped out.
the other 3 are still going.
Also, one MIC came with a shredded wire and good ole Amazon sent a new set asap.
