The rechargeable batteries don't last as long as I would like. Also the battery indicator cannot be trusted. Often shows full battery, only to die a minute later.

The hardware is the first thing that caught my attention. These radios are packed with new features and technology and holding them in your hand you can feel the weight of their importance. Other radios are bulky and feel like your holding plastic air which takes up valuable space in your gear. Not these radios, I honestly feel like they are packed tight with all the essentials.
The exterior design is genius (in comparison to other radios). As I mentioned earlier I like to reward smart design. For example the L-shaped plug for the head sets so they don't break over time. The belt clip that snaps in the top and is easily replaceable should it break off, which doesn't seem like it'll do ever. The battery casing that snaps on with an extra hinge so it can't fall off easily but can be taken off with little effort. The antenna housing which is usually a weak point on these radios is very strong and buffered by a protruding edge of the body. The AA battery pack that accepts a rechargeable battery or alkaline batteries. Even the indentation in the exterior of the battery pack where the belt clip lands proves thorough attention to design.
I've yet to test the range but based on the RF technology they are working with I'm assuming it's in the general specifications of most other radios although having an option to increase or decrease the transmitting power is nice.
My only major complaint, and I leave this up to the manufacturer to fix in new models, is the soft keys and menu options. The menu for changing features is unfortunately written in hieroglyphs. This is not ideal when you are in the field and need to adjust or change a crucial feature like the mute option on the radio. Also Navigating a maze of Pr, 9r, bP, rb, CA, Ub, oF, dU options is tedious and time consuming. I even had to generate a cheat cheat of each option and what it does. I'd be happy to email this to the manufacturer to include in their Manuals, which are equally as difficult to navigate. Perhaps an outline in the beginning of each feature and then afterwards some detailed paragraphs explaining it's functionality. The group menu map is great, why not expand that for all features?
On the topic of future features. I'd like to see these radios incorporate bluetooth so we can use wireless headsets to communicate. Also please make the volume level easier to identify, a small hole in the top of the dial is not enough, perhaps a white arrow, or even better a glow in the dark strip to indicate how loud they are set for. I don't need numbers but I do need to be able to see this in low light.
Otherwise, the scan function is great, it's quick and gets through all 50 channels in about 20 seconds. The Vibrate function is handy although it's a little too ambitious of a vibrate and kind of numbs your waist rather than alerting you of a call. Perhaps slow down the vibrate so we can feel the device through several layers of clothes. The headsets it comes with are a bit chincy, I'd recommend the $20 for the security style ones, much better. Charger is good, holds the radios tightly, even comes with a 12v DC car charger which is handy when you're on the road. I can't think of anything else to say except thank the manufacturer for actually making a product that incorporates the latest hardware and software technology and doesn't charge an arm and a leg for those features. Truly a rewarding experience to see responsible manufacturers who are not just out to make a buck.

the bad is that it is a little bulky to carry for my wife..

one).

I will most certainly recommend this product to people I know

receiver. Range is obviously the most misunderstood thing about GMRS; while with suggested range (more is better), don't expect what is printed. My experience with the GXT1000VP4 two-ways has been superior to my other GMRS/FRS units. I've gotten between two and three miles of range with acceptable clarity (some minimal static) in residential neighborhoods. Further range (about ten miles) was obtained over marshlands from small island to island situations. I've personally obtained upwards of THIRTY miles with similar GMRS radios (high altitudes in canyons and open deserts). With FIVE watt (5W) power in these handhelds it's likely they'll do just as well.
These handhelds are JIS4 water resistant(splash and light rain tolerant), NOT submersible. Can the handheld survive a short three second drop in some water? I've seen them take it and continue working 100%.
Belt clips feel nice and solid; clip on and off easily, but hold strong once attached. The radios feel just solid to me. Compared to some other "bubble pack" GMRS/FRS two-ways these feel pretty professional.
The included battery packs have been absolutely impressive. Charge the new radios for 24 hours for the first time. This initial charge time is very important and will prime the battery packs correctly for great life and runtime. [I recommend an outlet timer to regulate charge time so not to overcharge the batteries] After that initial 24Hr charge, charge the radios for 12Hrs (from dead) every time. I get about two to three days of power using these radios in a 30% talk/receive 70% standby situations. Many of my other brands don't come close to that kind of battery life. If using four double-A batteries (alkaline or lithium) you can expect more use time.
These handhelds clip into their charger nice and strong; the charger even comes with an automotive power adapter (cig-lighter plug).
As a savvy radio user I highly recommend these radios. I'll be continuing to purchase Midland handhelds of all types thats for sure.
