These radios are advertised as water or splash resistant. Last year one of them got knocked off the dock and ended up in the pond. I dove down and retrieved it, it had been underwater for about 30 minutes by the time I got it back up. It did not work at first. I took it back to the house and cracked it open, taking all the screws out and completely exposing the interior circuit boards. I dried it thouroughly with a paper towel and let it air dry over night. The next day I put it back together and with a newly charged battery it worked fine until it fell out of the boat a few weeks later and we couldn't find it. They ought to make them float, that would be a good addition to this product. We like this product just fine, it is compatable with other FRS and HAM radios that we already have, but I think that an extra 10 bucks for cammo rather than black is a rip off.

However, if you are looking for radio that is clear, comfortable, laid out well, and can talk effectively for a mile or two, then these are the one's you want. The only down side is the abbreviated menu's can be a little confusing at first. But all in all a great pair of radios that I am very pleased with.

..okay product

When I first charged the radios one of them wouldn't work. Swapped battery packs to diagnose and the same radio was dead. I tried operating the radio with 4 AAs (a nice feature) just be sure it wasn't a battery pack problem, and that didn't work either. I had a hunch that maybe I needed to power cycle the radio with no batteries in it overnight. The next morning I put the battery pack in and it worked. So there's something to try if your radios appear DOA.
== Successful Transmission and Receiving (in the same room) was very random ==
Once that issue was sorted out I started testing the radios in the same room with no group mode or privacy codes. The radio would transmit but the other radio would not be receiving it. After a few minutes they both started to transmit and receive. On subsequent tests I discovered that both would only either transmit or receive about half the time. I used a commercial grade GMRS radio (ICOM IC-F4TR) to double check the poor transmission and receiving behavior of these radios. My test included transmitting from the ICOM radio to see if the Midland radios would receive properly. They did not receive properly about half the time, even from a working commercial grade radio transmitting the signal.
With both radios defective I had to return them. I never got around to testing their range.
== 50 Channel Claim is dishonest ==
There's only 22 Channels for GMRS and FRS combined. I knew this claim wasn't entirely true. I thought that maybe they were counting both pairs of channels used for duplex mode (repeater input and output).
As it turns out, that wasn't the case either. Read this: [...]/ Channels 23-50 are simply channels 1-22 with preset privacy codes. Note that you can set privacy codes to any channel you want. In other words, channels 23-50 are presets and are not actual channels. Someone listening on channel 22 would hear you transmitting on "channel" 41 with a sub-audible privacy code.
== Operating frequency of UHF 462.5500 ~ 467.7125 is not true. (i.e. not repeater capable) ==
If you read the specs it says that that it operates on the 467mHz frequencies, which suggests that it is capable of transmitting to a repeater. That's not the case. You can only transmit from 462.562 ~ 462.725. Also it doesn't operate in duplex mode, so even if it technically could transmit at the higher repeater frequency, you won't be able to hear on the lower repeater output frequency. If you want or need a radio with repeater functionality, the Wouxun KG-UVD1P is an affordable solution.

tried to replace but exceed return or replace dead line. Will never buy electronics from amazon
unless use will be immediate !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
tip don't buy electronics for Christmas way in advance
Under stand policy but there should be some exceptions.

That's relevant because the GMRS channels appear, based on experimenting with these radios, to have better range and clarity than the FRS channels do.
Second: rechargeable batteries: this is good, but the recharge unit should be configured differently than it is. The only way to charge the batteries is in the radios in the base. That precludes getting extra batteries or using standard AA batteries while you charge your battery packs. That's a nuisance.
Third: 36 miles? Really? Maybe across open water. However, they worked from the house to the farm, about 3.5 miles away, with buildings and power lines in between. The range also covered from one deer stand to another and back to the truck. So, the range is really what you are going to expect. Keep in mind, range ratings are like dealership miles-per-gallon ratings: based on the ideal conditions in all ways.
Fourth: sound quality: this was surprisingly good. It went from clear to gone when out of range, rather than those annoying last few minutes of "did you get that?" Which always comes through like "Di__ ___u __et___ tha?" That's better: no doubts about whether or not the message got through.
Fifth: the Weather feature: good, but I have a beef with the NWS around here. I'll put it this way: the radio was picking up just fine, but the tornado warning didn't get broadcast on the nearest station, because, well, no one knows why. So, the feature works and picks up what is being broadcast.
Sixth: call feature on the radio: makes an irritating racket on the receiving end. Which works quite well to get someone's attention rather than having that person in the other room and not knowing you're on the radio.
Seventh: headset: these are ok, but I am either too dense to make them work with the VOX function on the radio or they don't support it. All in all, not bad though.
These are going in the survival kit and out to the woods this fall.

Makes organizing car cruises much easier than juggling cell phone numbers to get everyone on the same page.
They work great, lots of features. The weather radio helps when severe storms are approaching. The batteries are long lasting when on standby. Low power mode works well enough for most uses so even active the batteries last quite some time on low power mode.
