This radio set is an excellent value pack. I took them on a recent WY hunt and they worked flawlessly....did have to switch channels often as others must like these too! My only complaint is that the instructions on some of the advanced/private channels was confusing and took a bit of time to figure out.

I've been using 2-way radios since 1975 so I know all about antennas, linear amplifiers, db gain, etc... Anyone expecting to get a range of 36 miles with these radios needs to do a little research to educate themselves before they buy. In the real world (including open flat urban areas in perfect weather with no interference) unless you're on a mountain you have to take the stated "36" mile range and divide that by 15 to get the actual range of this radio. Realistically on a good day on flat terrain, using GMRS at 5 watts I get a total range of about 1.6 miles in the city and 2.4 miles in the country (your range may vary). The main problem with these types of radios is the cheap fixed ultra low db gain antennas. Be sure both people using the radios hold the units straight up and down (with the antenna pointed directly skyward) when tx and rx to achieve the best range. Holding one or both radios at an angle significantly reduces tx and rx range.
After testing these radios with fully charged batteries I found that one of the units rx is better than the other. Having both radios side-by-side on the same channel, one would receive far off tx and the other would cut in and out. As the tx would get closer, both would receive just fine. Quality control of just about every US company and even foreign companies is lacking to say the least and Midland is no exception.
The reason the battery charger ruins the rechargeable battery packs is because the desktop charger puts out 11.45VDC. The battery packs are only rated at 6.5VDC. Try testing the charger with a volt meter and you will see what I'm talking about. If the desktop charger unit had an output of 6.5VDC, you could leave the radios plugged into the charger and it wouldn't ruin the batteries. The label on the AC/DC adapter states "Output: 9VDC." This would be great if it was actually the truth. I checked it with a volt meter and it was 14.89VDC. The resistance in the desktop charger unit reduces the voltage but not enough. This is why many people have said the rechargeable batteries don't last very long. It's called overcharging and this is a huge disappointment for me by the Midland engineers. It's why I only give it 3 stars.
For the most part, this model is quite good on GMRS channels and I recommend it for average use. It's sturdy (the plastic is fairly thick), the LCD screen is readable and bright (there is even a brightness adjustment) and the rechargeable battery packs last longer than most if you know not to overcharge them.

These just died on us about 6 months after I bought them. We only had the chance to take them out into the field maybe three times at best. I heard other folks say that any of the two-ways priced under $300 are junk... I guess they may be right. Buyer beware. I'm going to contact Midland to see if they can fix/help me trouble shoot- if it's even worth it.

Use these for hunting with my boys. We seldom get more than a couple hundred yards apart and the sound is clear. Battery life is more than we need, we dont usually stay out more than 4 hours or so. Fit our needs perfectly.

Great radio. Used for a cross country move. The headsets were a bit flimsy but other than that it was nice to have everything you needed in one package. Liked having ac and doc chargers and the rechargeable batts included. No other accessories needed.

Keep in mind this is a radio transmission so the will be affected by terrain obstacles. My family and I ride motorcycles at Carnagie state park in California and it is so hilly out there that there is no cell phone reception. These are nice to have while we're at the campgrounds and someone goes to the bathroom or to the motorcycle shop (store) in the park. I can't tell you how many times I have got back from the store and my dad cussed himself saying "I forgot to have you pick ---- up at the store." Glad those days are over.

These radios did not work as they said they would. They broke down within a week of buying them and they would not take them back. Never buy electronics again from on line, especially at this site.

These two way radio's left me wanting. They are advertised at a range of 36 miles, but the advertisement leaves out some info. For example, they're only good to 36 miles if you have a direct line of sight with no obstructions. It's impossible to get that range unless you are at a high elevation and there are no obstructions between the radios. We did an experiment in a semi rural area. My son drove down the road and he called out the distance between us on the radio every tenth of a mile. Now we did have trees between us and I would imagine if it was open terrain we would have had better range, but for this test we ended up 1 mile apart before we totally lost contact, and the radio was breaking up at 3/4 of a mile. That's right ONE mile! Pathetic when you see a bright 36 miles written right on the packaging. So if your going skiing, hunting, or maybe to the beach and you will be staying somewhat close these radios will work fine. But don't plan on them working much past a mile in many circumstances.
The radios do however come with some features that I like. They are weatherproof, and they come with headsets. The Kids and I will use these to stay in touch skiing, and the earpiece will insure that I hear them calling while i'm tearing down the mountain. I paid seventy bucks for them so I think I got what I paid for.

The radios are awesome and live up to their advertising. However, one of the battery packs will not charge and I had to use regular batteries in its place. The other battery pack charges in the charger as it is suppose to and is very convenient. We used them to drive caravan style from Indiana to California. We were towing and it was critical that I be able to report from behind to the tow driver if there were any problems, and do it quickly. Communication was clear and without static.

FALSE ADVERTISING!
Ordered this set of radios because the wife and I were moving from Baltimore to Seattle. Being a prior two way radio owner I knew I wasn't going to get the "36 mile" range they state due to the simple nature of these radios. HOWEVER, I did expect to get more than one mile range in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, South Dakota, and Montana. On many stretches of I-80 and I-70 I could literally see my wifes car and the radios could not communicate with each other. Secondly the batteries lasted all of 45 minutes after a complete night of charging in hotel rooms.
This is hands down the worst product I have ever bought, electronic or not! If you're looking for something to communicate from the bedroom to the living room of the same house, they might work.
Good luck if you think you're going to enjoy these radios, they sure didn't work for us.

I purchased these and they worked for a week and never had more than 1 mile range! Horrible talkies. I guess lesson is you get what you pay for!

Works great for me I haven't tested the limits all the way but so far very clear sound. Do your research first because the 36 mile range if in perfect conditions so if your deep in the woods with rolling hills inside a shack and your buddy is 36 miles away and in the same situation don't expect this to work. I only say this so people are not disappointed because they did not know what they were buying. I love them.

I purchase this set with the intention of using it during airsoft events. The radios were left on all day during the two-day event without the need to recharge, or even a noticeable drop in battery power. They picked up all communications clearly. I will be replacing the headsets relatively soon, but there's nothing wrong with them at all; I just want a different style. Overall, I recommend these for any type of recreational activity where communication is needed.

Bought for my wife's business. First use was incredible! She was in a remote area with no cell reception and had no problems at all. Bought the additional ear pieces also and they are much better than the ones included with the radios. She said she looked and felt very professional.

Great pair of radios. Have not been able to test them to the full extent, however, was able to get 2 miles in the city. Good sound quality and sturdy feel.

What a mistake. I just received my radios, went on line and paid the $85 FCC licence FCC, charged the units for 24 per instructions. Unfortunately they do not work well. I know the 36 mile was overstated, but I assumes since they required an FCC licence they would be powerful enough to work at least 5 miles. Unfortunately I walk about 2 block from my house ( 300 yards) and lost service. I checked all the setting, was broadcasting on the high setting. Very poor. In short you get what you pay for. In this case not worth the money.
