They work so well, and with the headset too! The range says 36 miles and didn't seem to work once we got a mile away, but that may have been our particular location. We ordered 2 sets and if we ever need more we will order the same ones.

While I was well aware that the 36-mile range is only possible in certain extreme cases (and even then, I would be surprised if it is more than 20 miles), I couldn't even get 500ft to work, and there were only a few trees interfering.
I understand there are many variables to worry about, but in this case, it meant I had to send them back (+1 for Amazon's amazing customer service), since I couldn't use them.
That said, if you can make the range work (e.g., ski slopes, boating, etc.), I think you are getting a lot of bang for the buck. The kit includes a car charger, and a wall charger, while it also includes 'proprietary' batteries, BUT you can use standard batteries as well! Quality wise, the hardware feels very solid.
So in the end, if you are looking for 2-way radios, I would strongly consider taking a look at these, as long as you get them from a dealer with a great customer service (such as Amazon), since you won't have much to lose should the range not work out.
With that in mind, make sure you unpack it carefully, as the packaging is somewhat frustrating to put back together should you have to send them back.

Got these as groomsmen gifts for my wedding. Since everyone had their own set we had about 14 of them operating on the same channel. They worked great! Battery lasted 48hrs no problem, it was only down 1 bar.
The included headsets work but aren't very comfortable.
Instructions could be a little clearer.
They say waterproof, but I don't know how you are going to talk underwater.

These are the highest quality radios IMO on the market (i've had several versions of Cobra and Motorola, which i like as well). These are more durable and have a better design.
SIGNAL STRENGTH: Keep in mind that all 2-way FRS radios have the same limitations on power output, so these aren't going to be any stronger (except versus lower-wattage). I tested the signal strength from my house to my office (1.1 miles straight through flat-elevation neighborhood filled with trees), and was on the outer edge of getting reception, but could still communicate. As with all 2-ways, you can't get more than about 1 mile in urban areas, no matter the wattage. BTW, not all channels output at 'High' power (5 watts, these are FCC regulations), so you have to keep this in mind.
FEATURES I LIKE: It comes with rechargeable battery packs, however, you can use AA batteries if you forgot your charger. Also, the battery cover has a hinged plastic clip that must be released to open the battery cover (cover won't pop off if you drop it). The belt clip is spring-loaded and opens pretty wide. The belt clip is removeable using a lever-release clip; the bottom of the clip also has a lip to help keep it on your belt/pocket if you're climbing/crawling/contorting your body. The antenna is fairly stout and stiff, but made from a mildly flexible material to prevent breaking. The radios also have a vibrate feature you can turn on if you're around a lot of noise like me.
THINGS I DON'T LIKE: The charger basestand is very lightweight; to take the radios off the charger, you have to hold down the charger while pulling up on the radio (the charger has a plastic lip that holds them in), otherwise the whole charger and the other radio lift up with it. I suppose i could break the plastic lip off tho.. The only other negative is that these get stolen off a jobsite like they're free donuts. I've had 4 of them stolen in the last 2 years..

This item did not meet my expectation I m not satisfied with the quality of service I can't communicate after one kilometer This is so sad to buy things like this sorry.

The price is cheap so I didnt expect much. Purchased several for work. Range was ok. Rechargeable batteries go bad fast, sometimes within a couple weeks. So you end up having to buy aa batteries to make them work. Will invest a little more money next time and get better equipment. Probably a different brand as well.

these radios are good but the rechargeable batteries do not last dont after a few charges they last less and less and they will let you down always carry extra batteries with you just in case they take 4 AA batteries and if let on all day they will have to be replace about every 2 days

Bought these for my dad, and our trip to Colorado for Christmas. Going through parts of Arizona and the worst part of the drive, New mexico (where there is no signal for probably 3 or more hours) these worked great talking with the people in the other car. Made up a few radio games and some bad jokes. So many channels too, surprisingly enough a young child was on our channel on Christmas day asking if my dad was Santa, he played along. Haven't tested if it'll work 36 miles away, I'm sure that's in a flat area with the perfect conditions but it'll work at-least two miles in town through buildings and all.

This pair works great. I used it several times in a very crowded LA city and I got about 2 miles before it cut out. I tried it this winter skiing at Whistler, and some Seattle venues and man this thing goes far. Obviously the more obstacles you have in between the users the more it cuts out but the distance is very good. I am not sure how far these things actually go because I have been good and only used the non FCC licensed channels since I dont have a license yet...im sure other people will have better luck.

Great little 2 way radios. I also picked up the base camp unit that is compatible with these and everything works as it should. Have not tested the range yet, but overall - very please and happy with my purchase.

36 mile range must be line of sight only, even over water the curve of the earth prevents reception at this power level. But great for 3-5 miles in dry woods and even better in the mountains. Great number of channels and privacy codes: perfect for a hunting group or neighborhood project.

I had a defective battery for one of the handsets right out of the box. Still waiting on a response from Midland. Other than that, they work very well. Nice size and a great selection of accessories that come with it.

Bought this for the compatibility of a headset to use in a motorcycle helmet, the range reception is poor about 2 miles max. And only one of the two radio's worked out of the box. Not a product that I would ever purchase again.

These are great radios, Excellent range. I bought these for my KIDS, sounds silly but the 2 prior sets "Disney" or whatever POS ones I bought for the same price didn't work over 50 ft and chewed through batteries like they had stock in them. These work GREAT, durable, and have a hand free kit that the kids like to use when they ride their bikes "Over and out":)

The Midland radios that I've bought have gone through two hunting seasons now. On the trails, the radios did great up to about a mile or so. On the rolling hills and mountain range of the sierra nevada the radios did okay. You start to get break ups when under thick cover, even if your party and you are on the same side of a mountain. Knowing the product specs I was not surprise. Overall I would recommend this product to the next buyer.

Simple to set up and use, great battery life, decent range. Only complaint is I wish the volume to go up a bit higher, but in general they have worked well for our purposes. I do recommend getting different ear pieces. The ones it comes with are not nearly loud enough. We use the Midland AVPH3 Transparent Security Headsets with PTT/VOX - Pair and that helps with the volume issue tremendously. I've used them several times over the last few months and would definitely recommend them.
