Midland makes very good products. These communicators are no exception. They work very well in our little 100K sq ft warehouse. We have a lot of steel products and there is no reduction in clarity.

These radios are super quality and we recently used them on a road trip as well as a shooting outting. They are clear, the volume gets loud enough to hear and understand the other person even on a loud road trip. You can just feel the quality and crafstmanship when you pull them out of the box. The number 1 major selling point for me was the ability to replace the lithium rechargeable batteries with regular double A batteries in case you are somewhere where you cant recharge them. As far as recharging, the batteries worked an entire weekend on and off without even losing 1 bar on the battery!

nice charger set up for 12 volt or house current nice touch ear phone hard to use doesn't want to stay in ones ear too well and boom mic takes some work to position

The package of two came in good time. I am glad I have it, but when I gave one to my wife and got in my car to see how far the range actually was, I was somewhat disapointed, although not too surprised, that the actual reliabe effective range was about two miles. I was hoping for better. The instructions did say that it is a line of sight device and if you had no impediments then you could enjoy the full rated range. But I don't have a way to get to a place with no obstructions for 36 miles.
As for the features that it has, I am very satisfied. Privacy, specific calling of particular units, turning the little beep that happens when you let go of the push to talk button off or on, etc. Variable power settings are good. I especially like its ability to pick up Weather Radio. Scanning is very nice,too.

This is the third hunting buddy. Wet, cold, 20ft drop, stepped on, these are pretty stout takies.
Range is far enough for me, maybe 800yrds max through mix of woods, hills, bean field that I used.
Get the VOX ear/mic to stay quiet, they can be loud even on low volume.

If ANY one of your read the instruction manual, you would find out that you can only get maybe 6 miles in the city because of all the buildings, etc.. 36 Miles, yes would probably have to be out at sea. I do agree that the person with this product should specify that but it is also your job as the consumer, to RESEARCH before you buy something. Blame yourself but hating this product. I bought this for work and I love it! Works perfect!

of course the 36 mile claim is completely out of touch with reality.I use these for hunting.my hunting area is in a forested area with hills.they work for me out to about 2 miles,which is fine for me.Thats about all I need them to do.beyond that they get a little fuzzy and its hit or miss if they work at all.Going down the higway in a car on pretty much flat ground I have had them work out to about 4 miles.If your expectations are higher than these two examples then they probably won't work for you.I found them to be easy to program and easy to operate.the battery life is exceptable.they will work for me on constant on for about a day and a half before they need recharging.I like the addition of the 12v charger because sometimes I don't have access to electricity were I use them.Over all Iam happy with them.

5 Stars is my estimated review based on the performance and similarities of an earlier model. These, Midland GXT950VP4 5-Watt 42-Channel 30-Mile Waterproof GMRS Radio Pair with NOAA All Hazard/Weather Alert, are "Currently Unavailable". And I suspect may have been discontinued, although you may still be able to find some 'out there'. But I wanted to direct anyone interested to my review of them. I think this current model would be much the same. I am still very pleased with my purchase after about 3 1/2 years. I think Midland is a good company to deal with, too. One big plus for this new version is that now you get the added choice of a black finish in addition to a camouflage finish.

but, it's a relatively small city with no buildings over 2 floors in height. The other side of that coin is I live in an area with lots of rolling hills and mountains. Reliable (as in, I can understand what's being said on my 2nd unit) operation on high in this environment is acceptable at 4-5 miles. I have not had an opportunity to try it over flat land or a large body of water (like the Great Salt Lake) yet.

These never fail to do the job. Not really concerned about distance. Have always used these in contained areas with a small team of contractors. The privacy options work great and the whisper otion is a must!

I sold my old 40 channel CB walkie talkies on Ebay and got these. They are much lighter as they take about a 3rd of the batteries that the CBs took. It's about a tie as to which one will reach the farthest--depends on terrain. I'm going with the lighter of the two.

I bought these with high hopes after reading some of the positive reviews.. I was as disappointed as you can be...
First, the range on these is NOWHERE CLOSE to 36 miles.. On high power, I get a MAX of 1.3 miles with direct line of sight over open grass field. Put a single building in the way, and that range drops to less than 0.75 miles. There should be some kind of regulation that limits the claims these manufacturers are allowed to make.. Sporadically, I can get close to 2 miles in the mountains, but that is ONLY because of the signal bouncing down canyon walls and mountain sides....
Second, of a minor annoyance, is that these radios come with a car charger, but the radios dont have an adapter for the car charger...they ONLY charge with the bulky plastic base / holder. You have to carry this big piece of plastic in the car, and plug the cigarette lighter adapter into the plastic base, then insert the radios into the base... If you break or lose the bulky plastic base, you are out of luck recharging these..
You would be better off choosing a different radio purchase for your money..

I have used these for over a year now during our large Church productions to coordinate tech people. I have had no issues with these working with older models of similar radios.
I tested the range and got 2-3 miles through trees and houses. they are line of sight radios in that on open terrain (water or open fields) you can get close to the listed range.
The charging docks work well and the head sets are good for cheep head sets. they are by no means pro head sets but I use them from 3-4 hours a day during productions and they are fine.

Solid offering by Midland but again as usual the range is suspect. I live in a flat area and I thought at least I could get a mile out of these. Nope. Even tried at night. But for the price they are pretty nice other than that. They seem solid and the headsets work nice.

Having acclaimed these two way radios as the best I have owned does not mean they will carry 50 miles. In fact I don't know how far they will actually carry under perfect conditions. I know that about a mile away I am still able to use them and the voice communication is rather good for inexpensive two way radios.If I was using over a body of water the transmission range should be far greater. They are easy to use. I first charged the batteries as recommended by the instruction booklet and the batteries have held up reasonably well. The recharging unit is excellent. The "talk" button is somewhat stiff on both of my units and someone that does not have good thumb strength may find these buttons hard to press.The background light is very useful especially under dark conditions. These are not expensive two way radios and for what I paid for and what I needed these are excellent. The clip on the back of the unit is excellent as that allows me to clip the unit to my belt and since the clip is spring activated it is easy to remove.

I just may order two more later this year!...Great product, shipped quickly, packaged perfectly...almost too perfectly because It took a few cuss words to get it out of the well packaged box. Superior product with a very nice price. 5 stars to you all!

recieved package faster than expected radios are beautiful . the commuication radius of 50 mile is great ..tested them the day i got them they work great !. being water proof is another plus i will be using them for the kayaks.. thanks for a great product .ordering then thru amazon is alot better then purchasing them at a store i didn't have to leave my house thanks again

i never got 36miles out of it. the best range was about 5 miles. i live by a hill, about 3 city blocks, as soon as I went down it I lost all ability to hear them. but when I went up the side of the mountian, about 2-3 miles I was able to hear and send. If you want to use it at flat land then you might get a better range but I don't know if you would get the 36 miles out of it. My kids love to play with it they have fun with it so close flat areas' of use would be best.

These were the best value for our money when looking for walkie talkies for a 10 year old for Christmas. He loves them and was excited about the weather alert system.

I live on a family run dairy farm where cell phones do not work very well so these radios are ideal, BUT 36 mile range????? NOT!! They do however work for us to contact everyone at various places on the farm and we like them.
