PLEASE NOTE and PLAN ON THE FOLLOWING ACCORDINGLY:
AS with most radios and wireless video, the distance the signal can be sent/received is completely dependent on the terrain and obstructions including weather. These advertise that they will do 36miles on the ocean (no obstructions) and I have NOT tested these on the ocean so they may do 36miles "line of sight". In most typical situations it will be MUCH LESS, but this is not specific to these radios or brand. From what I understand, these radios broadcast at the maximum power allowed by FCC for this radio class. I tested these in an urban environment, with nearly maximum obstructions, well anything less then a mountain.... and I could barely reach my friend who was about 6.5 miles away in the city, I was in the suburbs. I was actually surprised that it did work, it was however VERY fuzzy transmission.
I would assume reception would improve if Cellular service and other transmissions were reduced or non existant during a widespread power outage.
These radios come packaged really well, include 2 radios, a 2 radio charger (single unit charges two), an AC and a separate DC charger (charge from a portable solar panel or vechicle), and are advertised as water proof. Also these have weather channels built in and you can set them to auto broadcast emergency weather info regardless of what channel you are on. There are also privacy codes, which I have not used yet. These apparently allow you to set a code on both or all radios in your group, tune to a channel with that privacy code, and only your group with that same code/channel will be able to hear and communicate.
Ive used these limitedly so we'll see how they hold up but so far, im happy with the purchase and ive recommended to my family to purchase a set for each of our houses in case of the worst.

wound up returning to the stores. We finally tried these. First things first. We hunt in an area with trees and hills (swamp) and are extremely pleased at the reception. Much better than our Cobras ever did as a matter of fact. They are a bit larger than the others we have had but I find that an advantage. We keep them on vibrate and smaller ones with a smaller footprint means smaller vibrate. My husband could rarely feel it in his shirt pocket. These vibrate longer and being a tad larger he feels it with no problem. The only negative is that in recharging the red lights do not go out when the radios are charged. This is not a malfunction just the way the are. I prefer to know when they are fully charged. But that being said we are pleased with everything else; including the battery time. We used them hunting for 5 days. They were "on" the entire time we hunted but just turned off back at camp. Two weeks later we remembered we had forgotten to remove them from our gear. Though they had been turned off, we were stll concerned about the battery running down. Nope, still a full charge. Sure they had not been used, but still some radios drain the battery even if turned off. These apparently don't. Again, too, we were pleased with the reception. Our max distance was probably just a mile or two apart but trees and swamp were in between, very thick. Our old radios just couldn't do it. These were loud and clear. These are definite keepers for us.
Addition 11/17/2012. One radio has given out. In between this original purchase and now we had to return another set because one gave out. So we are going to try looking for another brand.

So far, after two uses, they have worked great. The battery life is more than enough, I really like the
rechargeable aspect to them. The signal strength has not failed us yet. The only complaint is that the
enclosed headset doesn't work well for my wife. I had another one she is using and it works fine.

I would recommend these to anyone.
Thank you.

Just don't expect to get more than 2-3 miles of range out of them. The range is limited by line of site. You might be able to get better if one radio was at the top of a mountain and had clear line of site to the other radio. But that's unlikely to be the case so don't plan on getting 36 miles of range.

We use these radios for communcation during hunting, skiing, etc.Distance has not been a problem unless there is a mountain or two between the sender and receiver. Clarity is good.
Probably the biggest improvement over my old radios is the longevity of a battery charging. I top them off over night but usually they read at nearly full charge. I'm confident they would function for several days on a single charge.

They are bulkier than I would like, but hey... for the price??

I bought these and used them for several events at work. They don't do anything remarkable but get the job done. We were mostly using them in a few different hotel convention centers, so not really pushing the limits of the range probably and the battery life stood up well for our needs (3-5 hours of constant use).
