Microsoft is known primarily as a software company, but for many years they've made some excellent hardware as well. Their ergonomic keyboards are great and their mice are full-featured and competitively priced.Another area in which they've excelled is webcams. In my experience, their products primarily compete with Logitech's, another company that makes fantastic peripherals with cutting-edge features.At the moment, Microsoft's LifeCam Studio 1080p HD Webcam is probably one of the best buys out there between those two market leaders. It's an impressive bit of kit, built sturdier than any other webcam I've used. It has a serious industrial-feeling design, its cylindrical aluminum body looks like pro gear.As one would expect, the quality of the LifeCam Studio 1080p's video is outstanding. Not every program can record at its full resolution, but that would be true for any camera that records at 1080p, which is full HD. Even the included software shoots at a max of 720p, which is still very good. Having read much on this issue, I think most computers just aren't up to recording at this high resolution reliably, which is why company's are reluctant to put software out there that is pretty much guaranteed to run poorly.Even understanding the current hardware and software limitations, I consider Microsoft's LifeCam Studio 1080p HD Webcam a great buy. You're future proofing with this camera - your computers are going to get faster, your software more efficient, and your online connections more robust (leading to the potential for HD video calls).Coming back to value, the Microsoft's LifeCam Studio 1080p HD Webcam offers a strong, sexy bit of hardware at a very competitive price. The Logitech webcam against which you might want to compare it is the Logitech 1080p Webcam Pro C910 . It has similar specs and is close in price. It's not one I've used, but Logitech is a trusted brand.I'd suggest you take a look at both and see which appeals to you. You probably can't go wrong with either, as long as you keep your expectations in check regarding any webcam's ability to shoot usable 1080p video at the present moment. Not every program can record it and you can't video chat in 1080p on every service with most internet connections yet. But someday you will, and this camera will do it.

It keeps re-focusing when it does not need to, it is clear, and when in focus it picks up the lighting well.

Good clear picture even in the dark. Sound is crisp via skype . Installing with skype was a issue but when I changed the Usb port everything worked fine !

I bought this hoping to capture the awsome views of the mountains from my desk here in the mountains of Costa Rica. This camera does OK for the near view but, the mountains in the distance are very faint unless I zoom in and then I loose the panorama.

I'm not saying this is a bad Webcam but this is only my experience: The manual is 4 pages and it's not all in English and only tells how to set it up which anyone can set up a webcam but nothing on how to use it. The sound was terrible. I spent over 1 hour on the phone trying to reach tech support and I got routed to 8 different people who was not tech support and the 9th person was tech support who know nothing about the product and could tell me nothing about it. All I can say is "Buyer beware"

Length:: 1:08 MinsI purchased this web camera primarily to use as a Dash-Cam cause it had the ability to be mounted on a tripod. I'm happy to say that it screws in well and has a snug fit. It does not shake or move around except the standard shaking i experienced while driving due to the condition of the road. i Purchased a windshield mount Panawise 809 from amazon (...) which works in tandem.First off, this was just a first test as i have been using the camera for only a few hours and have not seen all the features yet. I'm using a Samsung NF-310 Netbook with XP Professional to record and store all the videos. I got it on sale from FRY's electronics for only $200 bucks. The software itself is "OK" but not that great. With my Netbook configuration, it recommended that i not use HD mode as it might severely drop the Frames Per Second and my Netbook may even crash trying to process the large file created so the maximum it could handle was 640 by 480 @ 30 frames per second. I did try to record in HD but it dropped to 13 frames per second @ 720p and to 9 frames per second @ 1080p. Furthermore, i had purchased another Video software from NCH called Debut which worked a lot better than the one provided with this webcam but again, due to the slow speed of my netbook, the frames dropped severely. I think a faster processor would make it possible in HD.Again this is just a preliminary test and i have not tested its capability at night but the video has been recorded at 640 by 480 (30fps) using the Microsoft software itself with auto focus turned off. One bad thing that i did notice is that every time i close the Lifecam software, the next time i open it again i will have to turn auto focus off again in settings as it defaults to factory settings. i will post an update after further testing.

I initially purchased a Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920, 1080p Widescreen Video Calling and Recording (960-000764) but was disappointed to learn that it could not focus to infinity, making my intended use (a live view from my apartment window of the NYC skyline) impossible. I replaced the 920 with this camera and have been thrilled. It set up easily, doesn't mind being run 24x7 and takes excellent images. The only drawback is the bright blue light that cannot be disabled in software (the C920 will turn off the light if desired). I resolved this with a bit of electrical tape.The camera's body does warm up a bit after a few hours of operation, but this does not seem to be an issue.

I found this product lacking in its ability not only to record in 1080p video with what it came with in software but also not so compatible as a Microsoft Product (accessory) with Microsoft OS power computers. Many conflicts and draws upon the resources of the computer even a quad core type which it should not. As long as you shut down every single application and boot without any TSR (Terminate Stay Memory apps) you should be fairly ok and safe from the Blue screen of death (conflicts). I also found Microsoft poorly supporting this product through their customer support help line, you maybe better off with a competitor like Logitech or other. Microsoft has no comment about this issue as of this date.

I was looking for a web cam that I could attach to a tripod. Microsoft's 1080p HD LifeCam has fullfilled this well. The image quality is good and resolution is great. It has a pecular and unusual mount that distinguishes it from most other webcams. I'm actually using it to record photo IDs in custom database software, so this cam has gone to the office.The standard photography tripod mount is part of the mount and the mount is bendable and rubber covered. This little cam will sit on a flat surface and can easily be handheld. The base is the units strength and weakness. It won't clamp to anything without a tripod clamp without resorting to duct tape.Beware that Microsoft has a similar looking version with 720p resolution that does not have the 1/4"x 20 tripod mounting. That one is less expensive and the images on the Amazon site show that it does not have a tripod mount. I bought 2 of those by mistake as the text does not clearly distinguish these two similar looking products. But if your reason, like mine, was having this mount, get the 1080p one.

First I thought that its going to be much bigger camera, which was my biggest concern but turned out that is one of the smallest HD web cameras available.Picture and voice quality is top notch, overall this stuff rocks !

We love our Lifcam we went to a store first as always then we came to Amazon as always. it is great. to see my kids on. Instead of just talking to them thevision is great have to find out where the echo is coming from.

Upon arrival, the camera was easy to setup, get started, HOWEVER, there was no audio. I got the latest drivers, no help, asked MS Support, no response, finally as a last resort, I didn't want to send the camera back, I disassembled the camera to see what the matter was. Low and Behold, their fine craftsmen in China did not bother to plug in the microphone, which has a simple two wire plug on it that connects to the circuit board with a simple push and click connector.After I reassembled my Name Brand, New camera, it started to work like it has never done before.This camera has a great picture, easy setup, but I can only give it 3 stars since it arrived as a "DIY" kit instead of a ready to use product.Be cautious if you are thinking of buying this one.

I use a webcam daily, and My old one was horrible quality. I found this and seen both good reviews and bad, but figured it would be better than what I had. I'm so happy I ordered it. It came earlier than expected and works great! Plugged it in and it was ready to go. Great quality, great picture, a lot smaller than what I thought it would be but doesn't even matter. Great product, I do suggest it. :)

When I first opened up the video I was amazed at how sharp and bright the image was. I am an image quality snob when it comes to photos and video and the new larger sensor, auto focusing glass optics, and low light performance do not disappoint. And it is exclusively for these reasons that I give this a 5 star review, because I've used a lot of webcams from Microsoft, Logitech, and Creative... and even though I thought that they were all at least "good for a webcam"... this one I would say is much better in image quality than the class of cameras known as webcams (perhaps $500 camcorder good). Now if image quality is not your absolute top priority then you can consider this review a 4 and not a 5. I did have the software crash and reboot my computer once, the AF can be a little annoying under low light or constantly changing environments, and for most uses the max resolution is really 1280x720 with 960x544 being more practical.PROS:+ Crazy sharp and artifact free (under reasonable light) video+ Handles back-lit, downward lit, and dark conditions fantastically.+ Great sturdy and versatile stand that can be mounted on a tripod.+ Real widescreen video.+ Good software with face recognition (if you've used any recent camera from Microsoft... it the same. It's similar to the stuff from creative).+ 16 levels of auto-focus from 1.5" macro to infinityCONS:- The continuous auto-focus can be annoying, but you need it to obtain this level of crispness... in the advances settings you can turn off auto and set it to where you're sitting and never worry about the AF blurring again.- The 1920x1080 resolution is not available with the included software (except for photos) and the 1280x720 has slower frame-rates (it's choppier) and can be processor intensive. But the 960x544 is stunning (and scales well for full-screen calls). So this is just a really a great webcam chat or YouTube camera... not a computer controlled video camera for movies.- The software may be buggy... On my install the pan and zoom (really just crop) features were grayed out (yes even at lower resolutions like some cams require), and when I tried to adjust it in the advance settings the computer crashed.Overall this a great cam with a few glitches... but it's certainly earned it's space on my desk (I use it on a mini-tripod next to the monitor... I hate that standard looking down on you look that you get when mounted from above).

I've been using this cam for mostly Skype calls and I've been told from others that the quality of the video and the sound is outstanding. There really is not much to say besides that its a great computer camera, all you have to do is download the software and you are good to go. Easy set up nothing fancy, you get some effects for the cam on the software to have fun with. The camera its self looks stunning, you can place it almost anywhere you can think off with its flexible stand, it has a complete 360 degree swivel, and the blue led light on the top also looks very nice when camera in use. I would highly recommend this product for the price you cant go wrong.

The picture is sharp, but the auto-focus can be a serious pain in the butt in low light situations!! I use it in conjunction with XSplit, and can broadcast at 1080p@30fps through that, but cannot get over 720p in the LifeCam software. Something to bear in mind is 1080p takes a lot of processor power and memory, so make sure you have a pretty beefy computer if you're planning on using it for that, else you'll drop frames somewhere.
