Let's get one thing out of the way: you probably can't use this at 1080P resolution with the software you currently have, unless you really go out of your way to prepare for this. The camera is capable, but the computer may not be able to process it fast enough. Moreover, MSN and Skype doesn't currently support HD resolution as high as these, and most of time you will just end up seeing VGA resolution on your chats. Those capability will come to be more widely available, but as of now you do need commercial software and expensive hardware to achieve full 1080p potential offered by this web camera.Pros:-excellent build quality--the camera has a aluminum barrel and end cap that's 1mm thick. It has coated glass lens and coated lens filter glass. I cannot find manufacturing defects with the unit I received, not even a single hairline scratch.-It's very portable: much more portable than many other competitive HD cameras out there, particularly from industry leader like Logitech. The rubberized foot/mount is also much smaller than those from similar Logitech offerings. Some may claim it reduces stability, but I found it working rather well clamped on top of my LCD monitor or sitting on the desk without the much added weight and bulk of other "more stable" designs.-There's a tripod mount on the camera base. It seems like a minor point, but when you think about the capability of this camera, it's better than most of the DV cameras we had just a few years ago or even many of the digital cameras. There is in fact a good reason to consider using this little webcam as a studio camera, where the tripod mount can easily be appreciated.-Excellent image quality: the sensor of this webcam is clearly larger in size than most(and also claimed by the description without going into the specific size) as it performs very well in low light. Field resolution is also very evenly sharp across the field, excellent for a web camera. Now auto focus is another story (see cons), but in terms of low light sensitivity and general color saturation, this camera compares well with the best webcams out there, if not already the best.-wide angle coverage: its field of view is 71 degrees, or equivalent to a 24mm lens for a 35mm film camera. Wide angle on a webcam is very desirable and this one is not done at the sacrifice of image quality; and it is capable of focusing down to only 4".-Microphone is extremely sensitive and has a full range sound pick up. It can detect very minute sounds across the room. You can also hear the entire frequency spectrum like none of my other contemporary Logitech is capable of. However, it is not without faults (see cons).Cons:-Auto-Focus -- I own another MS webcam from the latest line-up. This one also suffers from the atrocious AF problem. To say it is minor would be lying. I have had this camera for months, gone through two firmware updates, and the AF hunting issue remains (I can't believe MS isn't fixing it). What it does is that it will scan the entire focus range to hunt for subjects, and sometimes (if not often) it misses the foreground subject and instead focuses on the background, or even mis-focuses all together. It goes through the very annoying routine when the subject moves, adding to the irritation. This problem is more severe under low light conditions, though unless you are basked in sunlight, most indoor situations can be considered low light. None of the Logitechs I tried have this problem, and it's quite an Achilles heel for this otherwise excellent camera.-Image sharpness: Not quite by the effects of Clearframe, which is what MS calls its image noise reduction technology, there's somehow a lack of sharpness. Don't get me wrong: the image is very saturated and clear, but when you put it next to a Logitech C910 for example, it is not difficult to see that image from C910 is sharper. Now that could very well be software sharpening effects from the Logitech, though *by comparison* the MS cam almost looks smeared. Some software control/adjustment would be nice and could potentially solve this.-The microphone--on the box description MS said that there is noise reduction. However, it is very easy to notice that the camera microphone picks up EVERYTHING. If there is really noise reduction applied, it surely didn't work at all. There is no software control that lets me adjust/switch noise reduction, a feature that would be sorely appreciated particularly if you are using this for video conference.-No 1080P recording capability with the enclose software--Granted, 1080P recording isn't quite ready for the masses and still require some expensive/powerful hardware, but to me it would make sense if the enclosed software should be ready to support it even if my hardware isn't. As of now the enclosed software only supports up to 720P recording, and in my experience it is more resource hungry than the Logitech. Logitech also includes HD video chat software called Vid, whereas here you will instead download MS'

Incredible cam, with all the features and scalability you could ask for! It does also come with some stupid little features, but the cam itself is top notch. Our needs saw a requirement for a 3 cam setup in our studio, all 1080 HD and versatility of not being large or "clunky" and still have descent audio capture. We looked at the Microsoft line, as well as the Logitech series, and while the 910 from Logitech is nice, the smaller footprint of the LifeCam Studio™ was a huge plus.We have ordered one of each and this one wins hands down!PROS:Excellent build quality. The outer casing is brushed aluminum with a solid mic button and a nice long USB cable. It also has a nice glass element over the lens to protect it.Very wide angle capture from traditional cams and has an excellent stereo mic giving a very nice sound quality to the videos with no external mics needed.Incredible versatility in the camera as its pivot allows for almost 360 degrees of adjustment side to side and a very good up down range of motion up or down.Robust software package including a new version of Microsoft Movie Maker™ and the software drivers also cover a wide range of in camera effects as well as a plethora of feature controls for the cam itself.CONS:The only con, and I am not sure at this point even if it is one, is that the cam does get hot with periods of use over 10 minutes. We've run it on 90 minute broadcasts via Wirecast™ and noticed the heat upon checking or repositioning. The image quality did not suffer, nor did the audio so we're assuming it is normal operation and likely another reason for the cooling properties of the aluminum casing. All in all an excellent product as we're buying the other two today! Highly recommended!

I almost returned my LifeCam Studio because I was getting horizontal stripes sporadically in my videos when recording at 1080p but also at 720p. This was on a USB 2.0 port of a 3rd gen i7 machine. Using a Plugable USB 2.0 4 Port Hub reduced the stripes strongly but did not make them go away. What solved my stripe problem at the end was switching to a USB 3.0 port. The LifeCam Studio is USB 2.0, the tag for the camera says 500mA, and according to Wikipedia, "a device may draw a maximum of 5 unit loads (500 mA) from a port in USB 2.0; 6 (900 mA) in USB 3.0." Since my camera (and a Business version I also ordered) produced stripes on two different USB 2.0 ports, there may be a design issue -- it uses too much power to operate reliably on USB 2.0 ports. In any case, I just finished my first 8h recordings at 1080p with two of the cameras on one machine, and things looked good. I have been using LifeCam Cinemas as inexpensive machine vision cameras, and plan to use LifeCam Studios in cases where I need 1080p.BTW, both VirtualDub (free) and CamUniversal (inexpensive and has some features that are useful in our lab) can be used for recording at 1080p.

The camera itself is excellent. Great quality, a nice flexible mounting clip, the ability to swivel entirely around. The only issue I had was setting up the drivers. It was a pain! For those of you having issues with it (IE: doesn't quite Plug 'n' Play), these steps worked for me.These steps fix the issue of the camera not being recognized in the LifeCam software/Skype/other video software:1. Open Device Manager2. Find Microsoft LifeCam (there are 2, one for video and one for audio)3. Right Click > Properties > Update Drivers4. Search for drivers on my computerThis part was odd. I had 2 drivers available: Microsoft LifeCam, and Unknown USB Video (or audio, if under audio) Device. I switched from the LifeCam drivers to the "Unknown" drivers, and presto! works perfectly.Your mileage may vary, but this fix worked for me! When I plugged the camera into my MacBook Pro, it worked instantly, but the issues came when I set it up on my Windows 7 PC, and this is how I fixed it.

Bought LifeCam Studio webcam for Skype use; performance far exceeds my expectations. Purchased at $55. with Amazon Prime two-day shipping. LifeCam Studio has proved a true value. If not already aware, final resolution used for connection set by Skype, using lowest common denominator between hardware capabilities at both ends. However, my local live video stream is stunning (even at 640x480), e.g., the image color balance and noise-free image, in daylight or in mixed lighting at night. Expect will translate to good video captures, too. Fortunate to have PC hardware that supports LifeCam Studio, Intel Core i7 processor and GPU dedicated graphics card. Mount to monitor is simple and effective. Unlike competing unit, "Logitech HD Pro Webcam C920," allows adjustment in horizontal plane. Autofocus is sharp and responsive. Comment on install and setup: After first plugged in USB 2.0 cable to PC, Windows 7 x64 downloaded drivers without a hitch. Then, LifeCam Studio prompted to, "Install Microsoft LifeCam" control software and driver update; did not install. Had read in review and forum, not worthwhile. Confirmed Windows 7 x64 had initially installed the latest drivers, anyway, 3.60.250.0. However, if your PC configuration meets hardware requirements, recommend "CyberLink YouCam 5" for use as control software; in addition to splitting video stream among video applications, adds real-time "auto lighting" and "TrueTheater" for further image enhancement.

Been playing with the LifeCam Studio for a couple weeks now. I really like the quality of the video it produces, though calling it a 1080p camera is a bit of a stretch since it doesn't do 1080p out of the box with the software it comes with. Though, it's not like Skype or Live Messenger will do 1080p video chats anyway, so it's not that big a deal, the 720p video it captures is way better than the other cameras I've seen. If you want to record in 1080p with the lifecam studio, you'll have to use something like VirtualDub (freeware).I do like that it's Microsoft's and they have a much better track record of releasing firmware/driver updates than most vendors . My last camera I had for 3 years with no driver updates, no firmware updates and they didn't even make a Windows 7 driver for it. This camera has had 2 firmware updates and at least one driver update. That means they're serious about improving the experience with it.The camera picks up an image very well, even in super low-light situations. I turned off all my lights and just had the monitor going, it is able to lengthen the exposure or open an iris or something to make my face really clear still. The other cameras I tried didn't fare nearly as well. The camera's microphone is also very sensitive and sounds great. Which is good and bad. While chatting, every move in your chair is caught, every throat clearing heard, and yes, people can hear you belch or break wind. Farters beware, they will hear you."Did you just fart?""Uh, no...that was this old chair"The reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 is because it needs a fast machine to get the full HD video at a fast frame-rate. I have a dual-quad core computer with 12GB of RAM and a giant radeon graphics card and I get fantastic video at over 30fps. Other people have complained about how bad the refresh rate is, which I didn't see on my computer. When I moved it to my weak-arse laptop however, I did notice a slower frame-rate at the high resolutions. I guess that's to be expected until someone creates a camera that offloads all the image processing to an on-camera chip. I don't really see this as a problem with the camera though, more a problem trying to do more than the computer is able to do. Want it to go faster, use a faster machine. It's like watching full-screen HD videos downloaded from the internet with older machines. You wouldn't blame Media Player if it's choppy, you'd blame the slow processor and weak graphics card. Same principle in my mind. All in all I think it's a great camera at a great price.

This is a fine camera for general webcam use, and it's also an OK camera for the purposes I'm using it for.To get 1080p, use any program that supports that format, which may include the free programs Skype and YawCam. You do not need the software that comes with this camera at all. It supports the normal small-frame formats uncompressed, and it also supports 720p and 1080p in MJPEG format, which is supported by Video4Linux2, as well as most video capture software under Windows. There are two things I wish it did better:1. It will occasionally lose auto-focus and go hunting for the right focal depth again. There's apparently a setting where you can turn off auto-focus, and just put it at "far," which I haven't tried yet -- I'm hoping that works out.2. In low light, it slows down the frame rate. It does this to remove noise from the image, so the image does become less noisy. It also becomes more brownish/greenish, presumably because the blue sensor is less sensitive to low light. And, because the frame rate is lower, it becomes blurrier when things move.I've tried this camera on Windows, and it works, and I've tried it on Linux, and it works. My use case for this camera is a little different than normal, though: I use it as the "eyes" for a moving robot I'm working on. (Actually, I use two.)All in all, this is a robust webcam with high quality pictures, especially for well lit subjects. Cave dwellers are advised to either add a light, or prepare for blurry, brown, low-frame-rate videos.

I am not fond of Microsoft hardware, but all of Microsoft's webcams are great. This is an upgrade from a previous Microsoft webcam. Everyone I spoke to on Skype has commented on the quality of the picture/video. It installs on Windows 7 without any additional software/drivers and is ready to work in 2 minutes. It sits really well on an LCD/LED monitor and has plenty of cord length to be moved around if needed to point elsewhere. Microphone clarity is also superb. This version comes with a cover, if one feels that their privacy is threatened. The first one I bought was turning all colors except green off after a few minutes. I looked on the internet and several people had similar problems, especially with Skype, although not with this particular model, so I thought it was a Skype issue. I decided to have Amazon replace it and the new one I has worked perfectly since then. It was just a bad webcam.

I was surprised at how good the image quality is with this webcam, even when in less than perfect lighting. It is definitely a big step up from the pre-installed webcam on my laptop. This brings me to the only issue I had with installing the camera. I have to disable the built-in webcam every time I start up my computer in order to use the LifeCam. Other than that, the installation consists of plugging in the usb cable and then clicking to give permission to activate the cam when on Skype, chat, etc.. I wanted a webcam that allowed me to easily change angles without moving my computer and I purposely got the studio version because of the tripod mount. So far, I have not needed the tripod, because the bendable bracket is pretty versatile. I can hang the camera on the back of a chair, or simply bend it so the flat part of the bracket acts as a base and set it on a table or desk top. As I said before, the image quality is excellent, even in relatively low light. As with any webcam, there is a slight lag time/blur if you move a lot, but it is minimal with the LifeCam. Overall a very good camera for the money.

The dealer treated me as if I were an idiot when I told them the camera did not work properly. They did not offer to replace it, which would have been desirable to returning it for credit. The dealer REQUIRED that I pay for return shipping before they would refund. All in all I would not contemplate making another purchase from this company. The only bright spot in this is that AMAZON did the right thing and paid for the return postage and made the transaction as good as they could do.Problem is I still do not have a camera. So I am going to purchase one local instead of online. My decision to do so has nothing at all to do with Amazon or their procedures, It has to do with being able to deal with someone face to face in case there is a problem with the product.

Pros: - The camera's quality is excellent. The HD is crisp and clear, and quite suitable for streaming or Skype conversations. - The rubberized mounting adapter on this camera is FAR superior to some competitors I've seen (i.e. the Logitech C910). If you're planning to use the camera in group environments or for live streaming, the tripod mount is simply invaluable. With other cameras, we found ourselves needing copious amounts of duct tape to accomplish what this offers out of the box.Cons: - No native OSX support. The logitech webcams worked out of the box on OSX, but this one didn't appear at all. Chalk it up to being a Microsoft product, I suppose. There are instructions online that detail how to get a Windows webcam to work on OSX, but this process feels a bit "hacky" compared to the native support offered by other webcams.

I've been using webcams since they were first introduced in the 90's (e.g. with the B&W Connectix QuickCam), and currently use a Logitech C910 as a studio camera and four Logitech C615's as weather and security cameras. I've been happy with the Logitech HD webcams until I started using them outdoors (in weatherproof enclosures) and noticed that anything more than 15 or so feet away was out of focus and no amount of fiddling with the software focus control could fix it.After seeing an impressive independant review/demonstration video on youtube, I decided to take a shot at the top of the Microsoft LifeCam family (mainly due to the tripod mount) and have been very happy with the results. The Microsoft LifeCam Studio has a much more granular manual focus control (40 levels verus 15 for the Logitech) and I have not had any issue setting up the cameras with the optimum manual focus setting for outdoor viewing (they remain set optimally between power-cycles and reboots). The image quality and field of view is comparable to the Logitech C615, but if your subject is more than 10 or 15 feet from the camera, you'll get very frustrated with the Logitech cameras. If you're connecting this camera to a computer with multiple hi-speed USB devices already connected, I noticed this camera can be touchy about which host controller it's connected to (missing lines of image data when attached to already utilized host controller). This camera was also more sensitive than the Logitechs when it came to use with USB extension cables (I'm using 65ft PTC cables).Pros:* HD resolution (upto 1920x1080, but I use 1280x720)* Threaded for standard camera mount (e.g. for tripod, bracket, etc.)* Flexible positioning* Attractively priced (recently $100 camera, now for $45)!Cons:* Included capture software will not capture from external sound source (e.g. microphone, audio input)* Blue LED cannot be disabled (that I could find)* Lens cap is a bit of a joke (falls out)* Blocks of missing image data (lines) when sharing a USB host controller with other USB 2.0 hi-speed devices

Just picked this up yesterday in the Xmas sales...lots of criticism that it cannot record in 1080p but it says that on the box, if you look close enough! Anyway, you can find free software online (SourceForge net) and it works perfectly. Also, the auto focus seems to work ok now after some firmware updates. On my desktop (HP slimline w/Intel Core 2 Duo) I noticed the camera tends to get a little hot- I have read some other people say this too so that's a little worrying. I tried it out on my Sony VGN-FZ280 laptop (Centrino Duo) and no issues whatsoever. Overall I am delighted with this little gadget as it works great on my laptop and is miles better than the horrible built in Sony 'Motion Eye' camera. Still a little concerned about how its overheating on my desktop. My desktop is about 4 years old tho and a little slow (could only get 720p videochat on my desktop vs. 1080p on my laptop). It also looks really high tech and cool and not cheap, black and plasticky like other webcams.

What? Why did I get a Microsoft webcam for my Linux PC? Let me explain. So "this thing called called 1080p" is only activated with Microsoft's proprietary software (maybe). I think I have figured that out by now. But streaming in 1080p is a retarded idea because the American Internet is so slow that you would only get around 1/24 fps (I'm only exaggerating, you'd need a large framebuffer, though) you'd have the most luck getting this to stream consistently over the Internet in South Korea, maybe. Anyway, it works great with guvcview, and I noticed Microsoft's LifeCam series webcams are listed under guvcview's list of compatible webcams. So why not? I don't care if it's by Microsoft. I just don't use Windows anymore. I use Linux! It's because it isn't made of the cheap-looking ABS plastic material that the Logitech brand seems to go by.I am not hating at all on Logitech. I use their mice, which are fantastic, but this was so much cheaper and so much better overall than their "equivalent" 1080p webcam. This one you can even screw on a Gorillapod (that I also bought) or some other tripod, or to anything because there is a screw-hole in it, unlike, ahem, Logitech. Good luck relying on Logitech's horrible webcam "clip" design to stay on a monitor for 2 hours. And if you use a tilting monitor in portrait and landscape mode, well that just complicates matters.Or just get an OpenPandora device, Gumstix or whatever, plug this into the USB port, screw the camera onto a wall, and instant surveillance system, running on Linux, that you can use SSH and X forwarding features. How great is that? Thanks Microsoft for actually making a product that can truly support Linux for once. Finally, minus one star because Microsoft.

This little web camera is surprising! I've been using cheap web cameras to try and skype with my family across the country, and decided to upgrade to the HD version. Wow - did it make a difference! I just wish my other family members had one so I could see them as clearly! (I'll probably be getting them their own for Christmas - if I can wait that long!) The software is decent, and it works great with skype. The picture quality in lower light is admirable, and it's ability to pick up audio seems adequate as well. It sits very well on top of my LCD monitor, although I do wish it had a little more flexibility in being able to be positioned downward, it's a minor preference.

This camera is truely amaizng. The quality of this camera is UNBEATABLE, even when taking close-up shots of documents. It has a very well-designed zomming system, which you can switch between auto-zoom and manual. I love the neck; it's very flexible and will mount on ANY laptop or screen that doesn't have a spot for anything. It also has a screw so you can mount it on a standard camera tripod. The software is amazing as well, although can be buggy and has compatability issues. It has cause the bluescreen of death on my computer before (fortunetly not a looping blue screen). That's the only reason why this deserves a 4-star review. As for the camera itself, just about 5 stars. One last thing I would mention, sometimes if you move the camera around too much while it's on the video will freeze and you'll either have to unplug/plug in the camera again or restart any software to resume.

1080p pictures come out awesome! The product is advertised as being capable of recording 1080p video. The software that comes with the webcam does not support it! The fine print of the ad states that additional commercial software is required to film video in 1080p not included! So far I have been unable to locate ANY commercial software that allows this webcam to record video in 1080p! Microsoft does not know any one who produces the software either as I have spent several hours through trouble tickets with them on the issue. So WHY is Microsoft advertising this feature???? The 720p video recording works well and the picture quality is better than my old HP HD-3110 webcam that this webcam replaced. Tech support kept telling me it was designed for home use only! If that is the case, then why did they call it "Business Studio"??? The Lifecam software also does not give me the option of recording audio via line in function as the webcam microphone is not capable of recording loud noises like live bands. I ended up downloading Arcsoft's Webcam Companion 4 software so I could record the audio feed via line in. Yes the auto focus function does have a problem in low light, but it seemed to clear up by either zooming in manually on the object or by closing out the webcam software and restarting it. So far I have only had that issue once and I was using it in a half light situation. The lenscap supplied does not stay on the lens unless you tape it on! So if you want a great webcam for normal around the house stuff, this one works well! If you are looking to record 1080p video, then keep on looking for a better camera. This one does not support it! I give the camera 5 stars as it is great, but I give the software 2 1/2 stars for not supporting the webcam's capabilities! This is an amazing piece of hardware. The picture quality is out of this world, easy plug and play capabilities, good sound, and not to forget - extremely elegant look. A minor drawback is the mount - if you try to sit it on a top of your screen, it is not very steady and camera may fall off, also the lens cap does not stay in place (too loose). It's a great camera especially in comparison to Logitech C615 HD Webcam (which is terrible due to an inferior picture quality, poor sound, and a constant annoying flicker that persists no matter what the settings are).Anyhow - five star for the picture quality, sound, and good looks.

Pro:1. Was able to use this camera for an animation class as it features a tripod mount!2. You can turn off automatic controls and manually adjust white-balance, focus, and zoom!3. Camera integrates well with Microsoft products and services.Con:1. The Lens Cap will basically fall off for no reason.2. I was unable to record full HD video, there was frame tearing and everything else rendering the video unwatchable. This wasn't a big deal for me because that's not why I needed the camera AND I'm not positive that my other hardware was not at fault. Obviously, for someone needing an HD webcam - this would be grounds for a single star review. I quick glance at the support forums did not resolve the issue. As the problem was irrelevant to me, i didn't spend more than 5 minutes looking into it.

I bought this camera and am no stranger to technology. I thought that buying MICROSOFT it would easily and seamlessly work with the Windows OS (in my case WIN 8). I finally gave up and called MICROSOFT support and they spent 45 minutes (in command of my PC) to get it to work. Finally they did but after the next Windows 8 update it stopped. I finally have it working with SKYPE and Microsoft Silverlight. It projects a beautiful image but "struggles" to focus. I would NOT recommend this camera.

The hardware of this device is absolutely divine and the video/image quality is beyond excellent. It can capture 8MP photos and 1080p videos. Skype transfers only 720p, which is okay, and still looks very good. The software comes with some wacky enhancements/filters which are okay but what I really wanted was to record videos with it. The LifeCam software can take pictures and videos, but videos are capped at only 720p and I cannot figure out why! If there is a software update, I'll change my review to 5 stars instantly.
