wow. this camera is amazing. it's better than having an intergrated camera in the laptop! it's tremendous. this camera works wonders. the picture quality is clear and the quality in low light is amazing! i skype with my friend in hungary and she was able to see me with such clarity and the clarity of my voice in her direction was great!!!! i also skyped with my friend once at night and the only light on my face was the light coming off the screen of the laptop and she could see me clearly! she could even see some of the outlines of things in my room like my dresser and desk. this camera is amazing and i'm so glad i invested in it! it does wonders. i highly recommend it to anyone that is looking for a good camera for a great price. this camera is amazing. honestly if you're looking for a webcam and you've found this one, dont look any further. this is the camera for you! and in case anyone is wondering my computer runs with windows 7.

At the rate Microsoft is growing, it will only be a matter of time before we see Microsoft Cereal (with marshmellows). In the meantime, I fancied my eyes upon this webcam from the very same company.Considering there are plenty of other cams out there, with the same specs as others, the price is competitive. Installation is as easy as installing from the CD, resetting your PC, and installing the cam into the USB drive.For video programs, such as Skype, I don't think you'll argue the quality of the free version, as well as programs like Windows Live Messenger. I use it and I don't see a huge problem with the quality. If you're into making sure you get HD all the time, consider purchasing Skype, or some other video networking software.Off-Video chat, I can do virtually anything with the HD capabilities that Microsoft installed into this device. When paired with Windows 7, there's nothing you can't do. I also paired the cam with Windows Vista and Windows XP, and I am happy to say that both systems could handle the value-power.I have to say, that if you don't have the money for the 1080p version of this webcam, then look no further. You'll look good, you'll stream well, and you can do everything you can with the more expensive one. (It's just another way for Microsoft to cash in, until the cereal thing takes off.)

I had a Logitec Video Camera prior to this one and was told that the tramsmission was fuzzy. Thought perhaps it was poor cable transmission. Now using my New Microsoft Life Came 72op HD Webcam it is like talking to a person located in the same room. It is the perfect way to enjoy Skyping!!!

Camera is a very high quality instrument with basic usage. Had a bit of confusion when the microphone was not automatically setup when installed... After a frustrating visit on Skype, we found the setting.

I connected this camera and was surprised how good it looked. Very simple install, put in the disc and follow the instructions just like installing a printer. I have since given this camera to a friend and replaced it with the 1080P version.

I bought this mainly to talk to my parents who are overseas. They were so amazed when I first used it - its so clear! Also, you don't need a really bright environment to use this (like my previous cheaper webcam). I was surprised by how clear it was even when I had just a table lamp on.

I do not use Skype or any other video conferencing software, so read some of the other reviews for discussion about that use.I have about a half dozen webcams, all of which I use for security purposes, with the images being transmitted over the Internet by freeware programs Yawcam and Dorgem (both of which I can recommend for that purpose).Mostly, I find all recent cameras are roughly equivalent for that purpose, because the limited upload bandwidth of DSL severely limits the resolution and especially the framerate.However, I did recently find a refurbished Logitech 9000 for half price, and it indeed has better resolution and image quality than most, and the widescreen image is also a plus.So, I was pleased to be able to review this new Microsoft webcam, as I am a long time Microsoft mouse and keyboard user, and was interested in comparing it.This new "Lifecam Cinema" indeed offers similar image quality and resolution to the Logitech 9000, as well as the same widescreen aspect ratio. I am also pleased to see Microsoft address low light situations, since none of my previous webcams do very well in that regard.Of course, much of this is addressed in other reviews, so I will focus on another unique aspect of the product - the mount. Most other webcam mounts assume that you are going to put it on a laptop screen, and also seem to even assume a particular laptop. Microsoft's mount is much more clever and adaptable. It is constructed of unique materials that make it both flexible and sturdy at the same time. You can bend the mount at a number of different points, and then it will stay relatively stable in that position. (It seems almost like rubber coated lead, although obviously no one uses that material nowadays.) The top front lip will work fine with most laptops and monitors, while the weighted end stabilizes the unit. There is also a 360 degree pivot at the top.Despite the useful mount, the high resolution camera and microphone, the whole unit is surprisingly compact.Altogether, when you consider that the list price is $20 less than the Logitech 9000, the Lifecam Cinema is currently the best value in webcams, and is what I would recommend to family and friends.UPDATE: I have been using this webcam recently in a security application through a window. I had previously been using the Logitech 9000. I have found that the MS Lifecam Cinema (or more likely, its software) does a better job of automatically adjusting both focus and light level - especially at night. So, I find the Lifecam Cinema significantly more usable at night than the Logitech 9000.

I am not a huge webcam user, I have owned a few in the past and used them every now and then; but far and away the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema is best webcam I have ever seen in terms of picture quality.As you can read in any description of the camera it can shoot at a maximum resolution of 720p HD widescreen. And the picture really does look good. Of course you have to take into account the only thing you are shooting is probably yourself being lit by the glow of an LCD monitor, but your pale washed out visage will come in stunning HD. The camera can also shoot video at up to 30fps, but to really make that work I have noticed you need a somewhat fast computer and you need to use the Microsoft Lifecam software, I have had trouble getting 30 frames per second with other programs. The microphone built in with the camera is also very good. It is mounted right on top of the camera body and has a built in (And from what I can tell always on) noise canceling function, that is very good at eliminating the sound of most computer/laptop cooling fans. Also the range of the mic is good often able to pick up the sound of a whole room, which may be useful if you are looking for a webcam for teleconferencing reasons. A final great feature is the flexible clamp on the bottom of the webcam. The best way I can describe it is that is an articulating rubber cover piece that can bend and flex to allow it to lie on or grip a flat or squared off object. If it is hard to describe but I found it made it very easy to attach the webcam to the top of a variety of monitors, and was much better than a standard clamp of just flat mounting surface. Also I should not the camera is self-focusing and does a pretty good job of it. There is no focus adjustment, it is all internal and handled by the hardware form what I can tell, also the facial tracking algorithm seems to be pretty good too.The only real drawback I notice with this camera is the bundled LifeCam software. The software is slow, full of useless features, and does not allow for much tweaking that an intermediate or advance computer use would like. However from what I can tell you must install the software in order to load the drivers that allow full use of the webcam. But once you do that I recommend you find other webcam or conferencing software to make use of this webcam and its wonderful uses.So in conclusion, great webcam, wonderful picture quality, very good integrated microphone, relatively useless software; so seeing as how you can always find better software to make use of this great webcam I recommend it as a good purchase.

The webcam was purchased from Amazon through lightning deal at a very good price. It arrived very fast, well packed and in good shape. Contrary to some reviews it works fine without any problem. I am quite satisfied with a few purchases from Amazon and I will continue to buy from them.

Let me start off by saying this camera is all it describes and more! I was tired of my very old Logitech Webcam that I had to get a new one. I surfed NewEgg and found this camera for $59.99 + $3.98 shipping. I thought, why not see if Amazon has it? Sure enough Amazon had it, as of 11/10/10, for $[...] shipped from Amazon vendor.I ordered it on 11/7/10 (Thursday) and estimated shipping was to arrive on 11/13/10 (Wednesday). To my disbelief, it was waiting at my door step shipped USPS 11/11/10 (Monday) !!!Onto the camera itself. Software/driver installation from beginning to end was less than 5 minutes. Quality is great even on my old 945G chipset computer. It is running a PCI-E 1024MB Video Card but nothing powerful by any means.As others have mentioned, you need a pretty hefty computer to run this camera at full capabilities. I was limited to 1280x768 resolution which is pretty darn good and clear. I did dual video onto my 40 inch LCD and by George this camera is clear and fast.The built in microphone is great for Skype. I ran the program and did the microphone calibration and it would hear my voice perfectly sitting in my chair. I didn't go across the room to see if could hear my voice but I think it would even!PROS:Price- can't beat it with a stick.Features- excellent mounting abilities, HD 720p recording.Ease of use- anyone and their mother can install this webcam and start using it.CONS:None really other than the fact that it has an auto-zoom that focuses in and out automatically. I turned off some features and it still did it so I don't know if this is a setting or inherent to the camera and not able to turn off.

I bought this for my parents so I can skype with them. This webcam is lightyears better than what they got before. It's great at low-light and the microphone is clear. I have LifeCam Studio for myself, and I hardly know the difference between the 2 in terms of skype. I highly recommend this.

The camera installed easily and I was able to record some very good quality videos, but I wanted to be able to use my Blue Snowflake USB condenser microphone with it to record playing my guitar, but the camera software does not let you select a microphone. You have to use the one built in to the camera. I tried selecting a different mic through the Windows 7 sound settings in the control panel, but that didn't work. So I sent it back and purchased the Logitech C510. That one does let you choose a different microphone.I also found the autofocus feature bothersome. Maybe my lighting wasn't correct, but when I tried the camera, it kept refocusing every minute, putting me out of focus for a few second and then in focus again.

I've had this webcam for about a week and am very satisfied. The wide angle is fantastic and images are clear even in very low light. Installation was a breeze, just make sure you don't plug in the camera before installing the software. My only complaint is with the microphone. Disabling it also seems to disable the camera (This is not a big deal, it's easy enough to just mute the mic instead). Also, it may in fact be too sensitive. I find that I'm picking up a lot of background and ambient noise. It would be nice if it had some kind of noise cancelling feature.

This is an amazing product from Microsoft. It is small and cute webcam I have bought from Amazon comes with great features, software utility, easy and quick installation - plug and play and high quality HD video and pictures. I have tested and can use as surveillance camera and it works just fine.I highly recommend this product for a laptop or desktop use.

The camera seems to be OK but the Lifecam software (that I am guessing controls some of it's features) would not run (crashed right after launch) and I had to delete the software and use the generic Windows 7 driver before I could get the webcam to work with Skype. I deleted, rebooted and reinstalled the software getting the same result the second time. When it's Microsoft's hardware, software, driver and operating system this isn't excusable.Update: The software on the CD crashes when installed on Windows 7 but you can search online for the Windows 7 version of the Lifecam software, download that from Microsoft and it will run. There isn't a lot of camera control available within Skype and the special effects (like sticking animal ears on yourself) only seem to exist within the Lifecam recording software and are not available with Skype. If you don't follow the provided install instructions, just plug the thing in then download the right software and load it afterward then it's worth 4 stars. If you follow the instructions and use the provided install CD you will need to uninstall Lifecam before applications like Skype can use the webcam without crashing. That was really dumb of Microsoft.

This is the second camera of this type I have purchased, and like the quality of it.It works well on Win XP as well as Win7.It's just a shame that the Canadian price is twice that of the US price.Check it out for yourself at the .com and .ca sites....Better to order it from the .com site and ship it to a friend in the US.

I have to say that having read the reviews I was VERY hesitant to purchase this webcam and so it sat in my shopping cart for months. I was particularly nervous because I was running Windows 7 Ultimate (64bit). I am happy to report that having burrowed through the myriad of reviews, I decided to give it a purchase... and I do not regret it one bit!I have had ZERO issues with this webcam so far, setup was quick, simple and easy. It works EXCELLENTLY with Skype and it would appear it has potential for lots of other applications. As soon as the software/drivers finished installing, I got a prompt to let me know that some new firmware was out and I could upgrade. To be honest with you, I haven't done it. I'm from the "If it ain't broke..." school of thought, but maybe I will.I've had this webcam for almost a month now and will most likely be posting updates on its performance... but for right now I can easily say, no regrets... I'm thoroughly impressed!

I bought this camera for one purpose - being able to talk to and see our Grandson as he grows. My Daughter, Son in Law and Grandson recently moved over a thousand miles away for a better job opportunity. This camera works very well with Skype, so we can see our grandson do all the cute things an 18 month old does - and he can see us.There is about a second and a half delay in the action. I don't think it is the camera though, it is probably the transmission time lag from Skype. My Son in Law says the image at their end is very sharp and I haven't noticed any of the "Auto-focus" problems mentioned by some. The software did do an automatic update, when I first installed it. I had doubts about the way the camera clips (hangs) on the top edge of the monitor but seems to be doing OK (it is still in place). It has a wide field of view to match the new video formats, and my wife and I can sit side by side comfortably and still both be in the picture. The real glass lens, 720p resolution and 5X zoom are pluses. The price was just under $50.00 with shipping, through Amazon. I tried the Instant Messenger Window but prefer Skype for ease of use. All in all I am very happy with this camera and recommend it for video conferencing.

I was pretty skeptical about the claims made by others making glowing reviews of the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema. There was just no way a camera so small could have any kind of decent picture quality, or so I thought. I am very glad to say how wrong I was in making such an assumption, as the webcam really does perform as well as people have claimed.The camera is compact, and has a flexible mount that adapts to nearly any mounting style. I was able to fit it on top of my Dell 2209WA monitor with little trouble, though it's not as snug gripping as I'd like, it has stayed put so far without any problems, so I have to say its doing its job just fine. The head of the camera is adjustable on the base and can be aimed in just about any direction. Once set, it stays put well enough.Performance: It performs well when the subject it brightly lit. If there is a bright backlight or a dim room, the picture will look very grainy and fuzzy, but that is to be expected, and will happen with any camera of any brand.I've read complaints that the software's pan, tilt, and zoom controls don't work, but that is misinformation. The pan, tilt, and zoom controls work just fine, and if you read the information provided on the Microsoft website, it clearly states that you have to be using a lower resolution setting than it's highest for these features to be enabled. The features work, and the adjustability is easily controlled and not at all sloppy.The autofocus for the camera is adequate, but not 100% accurate. I've found that camera tends to set autofocus where it's sharpest point is about 1 foot behind the subject it's trying to focus on. While this causes a slight softening of the subject, it's easily corrected by turning autofocus off in settings, and manually adjusting the focus slider. Since I sit in one spot when using the camera and don't move around, this is not a problem for me, and the picture quality is fantastic.So far I've only found one software incompatability issue with the camera, and that's if you run EVGA Precision or RivaTuner's On-Screen Display Server, you have to manually add the LifeCam.exe to the list and turn off detection for it. The two programs do not get along, and will cause the LifeCam software to crash. No big deal, and easily avoided by not running both at the same time, or adding LifeCam.exe to RivaTuner's OSDS exclusion list.

My wife is from Germany so she lives on skype to keep in touch with her distant family. This camera has allowed us to transition away from Macintosh to PC. We had to switch due to an issue with mac that could not be resolved by anything other than a PC. So reluctantly we built 2 desktop PCs. We needed a camera so we came here and did a search for some good ones. This one came up several times in our search. We decided to try it out and I must say we are very pleased.(+) The installation is very easy.(+) It has a much larger lens than some other cameras it allows more light in. This means it works well in low light conditions.(+) We have 25MBps broadband connection we are able to transmit at very high quality. Everyone we have connected to on skype has mentioned how good the quality is.(+) The funky foot thing allows it to be mounted in a variety of strange positions.(-) Video software tries to force you to use MSN to chat.Overall this is a great camera to get for any video conferencing you might do.Thank you for reading my review.

Received mine today and was defective. Went through all of Microsofts troubleshooting but it appears to be dead on arrival.Contacted them and they decided to send me a replacement that will hopefully work when it arrices in "7-10 days". If so I will update this review.First time I purchased a Microsoft peripheral, and hopefully this is just a blip, otherwise I will stick to Logitech which I have had much better luck with.

Camera is smaller than it looks online, which is great because it will sit on top of your monitor unnoticed. Quality is pretty darn good but does seem to try and focus a lot, although you can stop this by shutting the "Auto Focus" off through the properties menu in the Microsoft lifecam software, (which is junk software that you HAVE to install). There is no way to change the default folder where it wants to store images and video, (at least none that I have found), so if you have a small solid state drive as your "C" drive that's where it gets stored regardless whether you have a large "D" drive for storage. This is just plain laziness from the engineers at Microsoft, but really this camera is best used for video chat and is one of the better ones on the market. Amazon has the best price on this camera and will on occasion beat the other retailers by as much as twenty bucks!

I purchased this so we could use skype, so we could see our granddaughter on skype. It seems to work ok ,with other connections , but, not so good so far with the one we want to use it with. In the future she will have an Ipad after, her birthday, and we're hoping then, everything will work fine.Truthfully, maybe if I looked better, I'd like the product better !!!It's a good product.

I use this extensively for Skype calls as well as Gmail Talk calls and I have to say that its an incredible webcam. It does auto-adjust pretty rapidly so you're not going to encounter those out of focus moments where you actually have to start adjusting your distance to the webcam. It is very light sensitive so you want to make sure that you're in a moderately lit area otherwise you might blind out the people you're talking to.I can't speak to the quality of the audio as I use the Audio-Technica AT2020 USB Condenser USB Microphone for my microphone needs. Other than that, I'm satisfied with this unit, would recommend it for anyone looking to increase their picture quality on their webcams.

I've been using this camera for a week now. I'm pretty sure I've tried out every option, feature and configuration that is available. With the addition of a Logitech Desktop Microphone, this webcam is a total success as far as my needs are concerned. I especially appreciate the automation that this camera provides. Light sensitivity, color control and audio seem to work just fine in my environment. Thankfully, there is sufficient control available to manage bright directional light coming from an adjacent window. By twiddling the brightness, or contrast, the overall image can easily be adjusted for a high or low interior or exterior light source.The included special effects are totally superfluous. They really add no value to the camera. If you have kids, they may have a couple of minutes of fun with the FX, but little more.I bought this camera to provide a visual connection to distant relatives. Skype and this webcam work great together according to friends and relatives that have seen what the LifeCam can do from their side.Note... For the best performance of this or any brand webcam, you really want to have the fastest Internet connection you can afford. For sure, the LifeCam Cinema will take full advantage of a speedy web connection.Oh, and one more thing...Good GRIEF Microsoft! What's up with the retail packaging of this thing? Without a doubt, this is the Rubik's Cube of commercial packaging. I've never had a harder time getting at the goods...ever! The very fact that you may have to return the camera for some reason, imposes a real challenge...especially if you are expected to get the camera back into the original packaging. Thankfully, there are several "Unboxing" videos on YouTube. Though this may seem like a petty complaint, you just wait and see how it goes for you. You've been warned. ;o)

The only problem I have found is when I am caming it does tend to freeze up on the other end.It doesn't let you know on your end like my past cams. It does seem to do it frequently. But all is it is a really great cam. It was easy to install and I am having a lot of fun with it. I can take pics and save them or do different things with the pics as well or make them look different. I enjoy having the mic, I hate the headphones and mic set that you have to wear on your ears. Drives me nuts, but with this I can set back and enjoy the conversation hands free and head free. The picture quaility is better then I ever thought it would be. I would diffently recommend this product to others.

Rating based on actually having it work, less one star for the "exception" issue:The Good (once working):Great device. Image quality is excellent.The Bad and the Ugly(only applies for older CPU systems, newer the concern doesn't apply):Via Microsoft Technical Support product requires CPU with "VT-x" capability. If you have a newer CPU not an issue, as all are VT-x capable. However, not all Intel Dual Core CPUs are VT-x capable. (This is per Microsoft, not me). This information is not on the box/web/amazon/or sales/or technical data sheet.Note: The above statement is based on the 1.5 hours of technical support today on the product. The software will installed and is not check for correct chip type during installation or application execution, see 'symptoms' below:Symptoms: If you do attempt to use on a non-supported CPU: (1) You get a grey video area screen from within Window Explorer when you select the "LiveCam Cinema Camera" from the folder tree; (2) You get an application crash/dump/exception/GPF/UAE when you execute the WebCam software and the camera is attached (inserted into USB hub); (3) You attempt to install the software from product download page at Microsoft (not from the provided CD) and get the "cannot install ... via Guest user" even when you are executing installation process as/under Administrator.

Before I get into this review, let me explain my system... I have a Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit with 6GB of memory and a GTX 285 Video Card (high end) with an Intel i7 920 (overclocked) processor (4 cores, 8 threads). Anyway, all that is tech speak for a new high end computer. There shouldn't be any software or hardware that this computer should not handle! Right? Well, there's always a 1st... read on to see what I mean......I received the LifeCam Cinema yesterday and was able to connect it up to my computer tonight. I installed the software without problem and then connected the LifeCam Cinema to my computer. There is a small blue light on the front of the LifeCam Cinema and it flashed twice and that's it. No matter what I tried, the system said that "There is no camera connected to this computer". I tried multple USB ports and rebooted the computer (which is the standard Windows fix for most problems) although nothing fixed the issue. Therefore, I decided to contact Microsoft Support (which was free by the way) and talked with a very helpful individual for over an hour. The bottom line is that we couldn't get it to work and he told me something that really shocked me! Get this... are you sitting down?... ready? Here it goes: They have had problems with computers that have more than 4GB of memory and it does not work in those systems! I said "Really?".. and he confirmed and said that it didn't make sense to him either, but they are "still working on it". I am shocked because the specs for this LifeCam Cinema is not low end so you need a pretty good system to run it (to get the full quality out of it). I guess there is a small window that it will work in... not too low, but not too high of a system either. I am shocked! If you have more than 4GB of memory in your computer, I would highly recommend not purchasing this LifeCam Cinema. If you are reading this review a while after it was released (September 2009), then you could try it in hopes that they have fixed the issue, but its up to you.The LifeCam Cinema itself was very nice and I was impressed with it. It was smaller than I was expecting and I liked that its "base" was very movable and I as not worried about it sitting on my monitor at all. I am a Microsoft guy all the way so I normally love their products, but this is the first one I had where I will have to return it and give a bad review such as this. Everybody makes bad products sometimes, but it looks like this is one that should have had more more testing on multiple systems before it was released.UPDATED: As noted in this thread, the issues were resolved and it is now working great! Therefore, I am updating the rating from 1 star to 4 stars.
