I've been using this camera for quite a while now and people on the other side always comment on the picture and voice (I use its mike too) quality. Also from my experience if you use Windows, the periferals must be from Microsoft: the installation is smooth and easy and they work flawlessly.

For the price, this is a good value. Installation wasn't complicated. Have yet to use it on Skype, but have successfully used it with Microsoft Communicator. The adjustable base makes it relatively easy to set anywhere on a desk or monitor.

Video: I uploaded a video but it disappeared in cyberspace. I knew I was too sexy for the web.27" iMac, Intel Core 2 Duo, E7600@3.06GHz, 3GB ram, Windows XP/OSX (Boot Camp). I got the LifeCam camera to work without software on the mac side but the picture was washed out and I couldn't change resolutions. This review is for the XP side.I installed the CD that came with the camera before plugging it in. When prompted to download software, I exited and started the camera using the software that installed from the CD.To record my video, I chose a resolution the same as would be used by Amazon. I could have gone one step smaller or many steps larger (up to 1280 x 720 HD). I tried out all the resolutions and found no flaws in my recordings. You can easily adjust the picture quality with sliders for brightness, contrast, saturation, sharpness, white balance, & backlight compensation but the default worked fine. If your picture is too light, try unplugging and reconnecting the usb plug.Zoom factor up to 10; I selected 4 to start the video. I used pan & tilt sliders to center my head. You have a bunch of effects to choose from that delighted my office colleagues and I choose one to somewhat mask my identity. The software doesn't include options to alter your voice but I could have used my Logitech G35 headphone to have done that (for your ransom videos). It saved snapshots as jpg, audio recordings as wma, and movies as mmv. All media were stored under My Documents - My Pictures - LifeCam Files.I pulled the wmv video into a movie editing program (used Camtasia but others would work) to crop the front of the video but otherwise left it unchanged.Absolutely love this camera. Before I tested it, I had planned to give it to a colleague making training videos but ultimately decided he could buy his own. Instead, I'll start incorporating live video into the screen captures I already use in my training.Comment to this if you know the trick for getting it to work as well on the mac side.

The Microsoft LifeCam Cinema is hands down the best webcam that I have tried so far. I have used a number of webcams over the year with Skype to communicate with friends and family living and traveling abroad. Those webcams certainly set the bar fairly low.The LifeCam Cinema shines where the other webcams I have tested have failed. The auto-focus is quick to focus on different items placed in front of the cam producing clear photos in regular lighting conditions. Under lower-light conditions, the color quality does suffer slightly butIn order to produce the highest quality video, the LifeCam Cinema does seem to require a considerable amount of processing power. In my first attempt, I used the webcam with a laptop that had a dual-core T2080 (1.73GHz) processor and 1GB ram, integrated video, and Vista. At 720p, the laptop was chugging as hard as it could and the video stuttered a bit. This isn't too surprising as the laptop doesn't seem to do too well when playing a 720p video file either. Placing the webcam on a desktop Core2Duo with 4GB ram, dedicated graphics, and Win7 64-bit, the video recording performance was smooth.Another plus that I have enjoyed is that this is widescreen! Considering all laptops and desktop screens come in widescreen flavors nowadays, its nice that webcams are finally catching up to fit in the expanded screen real estate. The built-in mic leaves a bit to be desired. If you want clearer sound quality, I would recommend purchasing a separate headset. Despite this drawback, this seems to be the best webcam I have seen yet and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Hello, before I begin, here are the 5 systems I tested this MS product on:1)(PC) Intel DUO 3.6GHz Extreme,3GB Ram, 500GB HD, Radeon HD2600, Snow Leopard.2)(LAPTOP) Intel Duo T2250, 2.5GB Ram, 320GB HD, Intel 945Grap, Windows7.3)(PC) Intel Dual core 2.6GHz, 2GB Ram, 320GB HD, NVIDIA 9400GT, Windows Vista.4)(PC)Intel Celeron 2.8 GHz, 3GB Ram, 80GB HD, NVIDIA 512MB, Windows XP PRO.5)(PC)AMD Turion X2 64, 8GB Ram, 1TB HD, Radeon 4890 HD 1080p, Windows7.In systems 1,2,3 and 5 the LifeCam Cinema performed well when sharing resources with Logitech Orbit HD, in both systems I ran 2 heavy data apps as well as 2 communication apps at the same time and they performed very well, the only thing I noticed is that, lifecam will take more than 50% of CPU resources unlike Logitech Orbit, that at the Highest video compression will only take no more than 30 to 33%, in low light Orbit is still the champion but cinema is more define even while darker, the highes HD is only 720p in LifeCam Cinema while Orbit can go as high as your Video card can support it, on a celeron system, is not a good idea to install the lifecam Cinema or even try to run it on any higher resolution than the one it allows you to run in, no more than two apps should be run and never try running two camera apps or the system will fail and crach, on windows Ultimate and Snow Leopard(apple), you will see warning signs on highest to the HD resolutions, only if you are sure your that your display hardware and drivers can handle the compression load use them, now, on high end system with lots of memory and HD display, make sure you setup your display resolution to the highes HD before you install the LifeCam, otherwise you will see the warning signs as well, on HD laptops you take full advantage of the Lifecam Cinema. On Windows XP PRO, you have to install and download the proper drivers, also, the HD resolution can only work if your display drivers can compress and hold high resolutions, in other words, don't espect to get HD video if your video card is standard and your memory is less than 3 GB of Ram, overall, the LifeCam is the 2nd true HD only this time made by Microsoft( I am NOT a microsoft hardware fan), the camera is only 720p HD and I am a 1080P HD guy, so, for now is a good product, I bet logitech will comeback with something better this one, lol, and I think you should not pay more than $80.00 for this product.

I recently purchased this camera because my new Thinkpad didn't have one built in. Annoying, but not strictly speaking relevant to this review. The 720p Lifecam is a snap to install on Windows 7 - essentially plug it in and in 20 seconds you have a functioning webcam. I primarily use it with Google's video chat, and it works well there. The only problem I have with it at all is that (especially in poor light), it can have difficulty deciding where to focus, and the exposure can continually ratchet up and down. I find it annoying while looking at it picture-in-picture, and I'm sure the people on the other end find it even more annoying. That said, it does give significantly better quality than the tiny webcams in most laptops or monitors. If you can find it for a reasonable price, it does improve the chatting experience (at least for the person on the other end).

I purchased this product to use for a web based talk show I host. I figured that the 720 HD Widescreen format would enhance the show. The best thing I can say about this device was that it didn't try and murder me like it did my computer. It appears that there is a known conflict with a Windows 7 64-bit machine. Microsoft does not tell you this. The device never worked right but when I installed an updated driver the machine started and then cycled off. This kept happening. Even "Ian," and "Pam" Microsoft's crack tech team couldn't help me resolve the issue. I kept telling them that they had to abandon the flow chart they were reading from and get me to an actual technician. Well I had to wipe my hard drive clean. On the bright side I did solve the problem. I went out and bought a Logitech Pro 9000.The one time I actually did get the device to work, it was out of focus and any movement only made it worse.I am usually a fan of Microsoft Products. They don't have all the bells and whistles of other products, but they usually work...especially on machines running Windows. They're usually pretty plug and play. This is going to make me seriously think about purchasing another Microsoft peripheral.

I purchased the LifeCam Cinema for use on my MacBook running 10.6.4. The camera is UVC compliant so it literally is just plug and play. Form factor is great, it's a tiny camera with a useful flexible stand. The camera stand is strong enough to support the camera on its own, or clip it to the top of your monitor.Unfortunately autofocus and brightness control are Windows specific drivers. Intending to use this in class as a digital projector, not having autofocus makes it impossible to use.QuickTime X immediately supports it, you just need to select it from the drop down options, and it records in full resolution which is fantastic. iChat, PhotoBooth and I believe Skype all default to 640 X 480 pixels (0.3Mp) per frame or pic meaning a HD webcam is basically useless in these cases. So if you're thinking of using this as a HD Webcam, save your money and opt for a standard webcam until HD is supported. Also Quicktime X is the only app 16:9 is supported as the rest default to 4:3. I'm sure updates are coming soon with so many HD webcams already out in the market.Questions? Comment them and I'll try and respond if I can help.

Out of the box, the first thing I noticed about this little camera was that there was a paper notice over the USB port warning users not to plug it in UNTIL they installed the hardware. As someone that has done a lot of end user support and repair, this is simply brilliant and will solve installation problems for what is probably the majority of folks. It took maybe 15 minutes to install and was very straight forward. It does prompt you for Windows Live components to be installed, and I found myself grumbling about that a bit - MS never stops trying to make things almost too easy, while in the process shoving their web products down your nose, do they? The user interface is extremely easy and I like it very much. It is ultra-intuitive. You can take pictures, record audio, or make short videos to share. The audio quality really had me impressed - I find it to be very clear and rich. The file size is nice too, for instance, I sent a video message to my dad that was a few minutes long, and it clocked in at 1,293kb - EASILY email-able without the end user having to add any compression! At first I wasn't so happy with the picture, but the settings tab let me lower the saturation - that's all it took in my case to make a much better picture, the default was too high here. Also I was able to zoom/pan/tilt the camera until the picture was JUST what I wanted it to be, and not the naked mannequin that I have in my background. :)It works with a variety of chat products, but it encourages you to use Windows Live. It works with Skype.I am not finding it to be resource intensive at all. I'm running it on an older computer with no problems, BUT this computer runs mainly MS products/software by design and I find that can really make a difference. The one thing I really don't LIKE about this webcam - is that I want a shutter. I want to be able to shutter it closed when I am not using it.

I purchased the Microsoft LifeCam Cinema from Amazon after receiving a gift certificate. After looking in stores Amazon offered the best price. The camera itself is well built it has an aluminum body and glass lens so it is sturdy. It's easy to mount on my flat panel monitor. Installation was easy however I recommend going to the Microsoft website for software updates and firmware updates. Image quality was outstanding and it performs extremely well in low light, this cam is head and shoulders above my old Logitech QuickCam Express but that's like comparing a KIA to a Mercedez. One thing I have learned is that most cameras will perform much better if you provide enough lighting so lighting is everything!!! On the down side make sure your computer is fast enough you should definitely have a dual core processor and plenty of RAM. I have an older computer so I was getting a lot of "Lifecam.exe has stopped working" messages but after I uninstalled the Microsoft software it seemed to have fixed the problem. In the end I purchased a Logitech C500 from Best Buy to see if the problem persisted. The Logitech software works well with Windows 7 which is funny because you figure Microsoft software should work well with Windows 7 but the Logitech software seems to have a lot less issues with the OS. I have also used the LifeCam Cinema with another newer laptop and I didn't have any of the above mentioned issues. Overall an excellent webcam just make sure you have a fast computer to match it up with.

Overall, for the price, there isn't a webcam out there that you can expect this quality. The 720p video is excellent and is at an excellent frame rate. I use it daily for video conferencing and have recorded lengthy (1+ hour) videos on it and the quality has been spectacular. There is an issue, that has been mentioned, which is its auto-focus. The odd thing is that the focus works amazing when you're moving, however if you sit still for a long time it seems to lose you in the background every once and while and will try to refocus until you move or it finds you (which usually doesn't take too long, nor does this happen extremely frequently.) Also, the corrective white balance can be off, but that is to be expected with these types of cameras. Overall, for the price the quality is amazing and can not be beat.

I purchased this item because I wanted a better quality webcam than the built-in one on my laptop. Built-in is so convenient, but the lighting in my room is not so good, and even with good light the quality wasn't anything to skype home about. With this webcam however, the picture seems to always be clear, even when in very poor lighting. I have had a little bit of a problem with the auto-focus in lower light ... sometimes even after it's focused it doesn't think it is, and refocuses. Aside from that the only problem I think I've had is that sometimes the connection speeds on skype aren't fast enough for high quality calling ... but I'm sure that the video quality is much better than the built in camera in any case.

This camera provided me a remote view of my home 24/7 while we were away for several months. It operated very reliably (other webcams that have been given this task have failed repeatedly after days or weeks) and didn't need to be reset. I used Yawcam software with Windows XP to keep a streaming version of the video available, as well as a static shot every 30 seconds that was saved to the hard drive and uploaded to my Dropbox. The camera itself is even attractive, far more than the giant orbs or weird pancakes I've seen before. I didn't quite believe the "HD" quality, and of course you're not going to get the kind of images you'd get out of a REAL HD video camera, but it's miles better than Standard Definition. The autofocus works well and does a very good job of attaining sharp images, an absolute chore on manually-focused webcams. The camera was easy to mount with its articulating, bendable base. I clamped it somewhere sturdy and it held tight the whole time. The only annoyance was the bright blue LED on the front, which initially was reflected by the window the camera was aimed out of, though a piece of electrical tape remedied that pretty quickly. All in all, I'm glad to see USB webcams starting to reach pretty-darn-good quality and plan on putting a couple of these around my home for security as well as recording and sharing the beautiful view behind the house. (Particularly useful for days when I'm too busy to leave my computer long enough to look outside!)

Bought this hoping to step up from my laptop built in camera. Can't say i'm happy with it.Positive:* Looks good* With good lighting and right software/config the picture is goodNegative:* Pain to install, software is clumsy and slow* Doesn't work with Mac* HD in Skype is fiddly and unreliable (yes, i know it's a hack, but still, it's one of the primary uses for any webcam, so...)* Couldn't get HD video to work in messenger either* Low light performance is better than my old webcam, but still not good (there is a definite lag in low light conditions)Bottom line: if you are looking for an HD webcam that you can just plug in and get on with it - look elswhere. If you are an IT guy with time to spare and likes the challenge - then this one is right up your alley.

Straight from the box, jacked into USB with no software installed, it works in Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10 perfectly, in 720p. I'm using it under Ubuntu - there it's simple plug-n-play, after plugging it in I just point capture software (Cheese, VLC, motion, etc) at /dev/video0 and it's working, 720p. With Win7 I just plugged it in and double-clicked on 'Lifecam Cinema' in 'Devices and Printers' or 'Computer'. (didn't try any video chat in Win7) Autofocus and auto-exposure are both handled entirely by the webcam, so far in a variety of test situations both have performed admirably. The included software I found annoying - it insists the dual-core atom system isn't sufficient for the three highest resolutions (up to 720p) but they work just fine outside that software. Granted the "add a silly hat|nose|mask" feature takes significant CPU, but I don't see myself wanting that - ever. Anyway as said I use it under Ubuntu, where everything I've tried so far has been quite happy and capable at 720p.Autofocus is a little irritating, if the cam thinks it needs to refocus it sometimes adjusts the focus all the way out (total blur) then snaps in to clear focus. And the webcam plays hell with the BIOS on my Intel D510MO motherboard - with this cam plugged in it takes 35 seconds from power-on for the bios splashscreen to appear, without the cam it's 4-5 seconds. That could be the fault of the BIOS, I've not booted any other system with it already plugged in, so I've not deducted any stars from my rating for this.Autofocus works as close as a few inches away - I was able to get a clear snapshot of my thumbprint. (I actually used it as an on-screen magnifier one night trying to read a fine-printed map)

The Microsoft LifeCam comes packed with some nice surprises. Its a given that more time is going to be spent on removing the camera from its packaging then the actual installation. The LifeCam is fitted with an expandable mounting base and a 6' USB cable. After popping in the software cd, the camera was up and running in a matter of a minutes. The much hyped Windows Live video calling network package with its special effects and avatars is probably an okay add on for some but not for us. Personally I find it too intrusive. Its not required to get the webcam up and running. Other chat networks work fine without it. It paired well with both Meebo and Google's G Chat without stalling or interruptions. The aluminum chassis is encased in a black & silver finish hard plastic body. The swivel head feature is a nice add on. Its 720p sensor pushes true HD video up to 30 frames per second. The glass optics are a good quality in house product. I was very impressed by the clarity and sharpness of image transmission. Auto focus was on point. In low light, this camera did better then I expected. The microphone located directly on top of the unit picks up even the faintest of whispers. The touch dial button is useless unless the Windows Live program is activated. A broadband connection is a given if this program is to function properly. It goes without saying that a fast system is required to achieve the higher resolutions. The five year old Windows XP juiced antique in the corner just isn't going to cut it.The LifeCam is packed with an attached 6' USB cable, software CD, and a three year limited product warranty. Overall for the price and features, I find the LifeCam to be a step up over some of the other products out there. Undoubtedly it delivers on the basics and more.

Guarentee you will be happier with the Logitech Orbit - it tracks your face, does motion-based recordings... much better.PS I hate giving reviews and have no time to do it - so you better listen to this one :)

The kids and I live in the northeast while their mother lives in the southeast. Other than transmission problems with the ISP's, the resolution and voice are fantastic. It's lightweight and conforms to any monitor or laptop with the flex-mount. I haven't used the extension cable I purchased with the unit but I'm interested to see how well the additional length affects the quality. Overall I have to give this unit high marks.
