However, what is really annoying, and accounts for my low rating, is the pop up message that I am using non-HP ink cartridges. I know - I bought them for less that half the price of the HP product, and they work well. I do not want my work to be obscured by a pop up that appears every few minutes. I am sure that HP want to irritate us into buying their cartridges - instead they have convinced me never to buy another HP product.
I have printed photos and double-sided documents without problem and am happy with the quality. I think the printer is faster and quieter than my old model and I think ink usage is better. Overall I'm impressed so far!
I looked at four or five different printers and found that this HP Photo-smart 6520 e-All-in-one meet all my needs for printing Photo's.
Very satisfied.
Dave Simpson.
Opening the box and installation was extremely simple, out of the box and printing with my idevices in a matter of 2 minutes, which was mainly due to trying to get it out of its excessive packaging. The windows installation disk completed no more than a minute later.
This printer has been used daily and not once has it dropped wifi connection, and has printed every time with high-end quality and consistently. The only exception to this was the print run seconds before the ink warning lights came on, this print was showing visible horizontal lines. The ink that came with the printer lasted about 30 days, and the replacement ink value pack to replace was about
Photo printing at "enthusiastic amateur" level, working through Adobe Photoshop Elements is excellent although I should leave it to a professional to provide a more scientific evaluation.
So far - the usual moan, but these cartridges are equipped (each) with an ID chip, which doesn't allow you to use "unauthorized" i.e. cheaper ink.
This is an outrage, I paid for this printer and own it, how can HP legally stop me (and they do) using cheaper ink.
I'm now mothballing it and will never buy any HP product.
HP used to be an honorable and dependable company, but forcing you to buy their expensive ink is (in my opinion) an act of extortion.
However I have encountered one problem. This is the ease with which this printer suffers from paper jams. I've never really had this issue with other printers before, and I've found it extremely time consuming (and annoying!) to deal with repeated jams. To give a rough indication of how frequent they are I would say it has happened to me about 6 or 7 times since I got the printer. Orginally I thought it may be down to the paper I was using (which was admittedly the cheapest junk I could find) but since using proper/good quality paper I have not really noticed any improvement in this problem at all. It may well be that I simply have a dodgy printer or that I'm doing something wrong, but given how difficult it can be to get the printer to allow you to continue printing after a jam this may not be the ideal choice for those looking for the simplest to use printer.
That said, the various qualities of this printer do for me outweigh the annoyance that the jamming issue causes and is certainly a good choice for those looking to upgrade.
It uses loads and loads of ink and the ink isn't cheap.
It's wireless, copies, scans and prints.
It has a smart touchscreen for the price it's good but just beware of the ink!!!!
Thus I was forced to buy this one so that I could use all the ink I had just purchased.
Printer is quicker, photos are sharper and the addition of double-sided printing is great.
Set up was not a problem initially, but after a day, one of the ipads in the house stopped talking to it, so we now cannot print from that ipad. No idea whether it's the ipad or the printer at fault.
Emailing from it is a bit cumbersome. You need to set up a special password for each email address that seemingly needs to be entered each time you want to send a scanned document from the printer.
Photo print quality is OK (Photos not brilliant but as good as some of the cheap shops/machines in shops). When I print a colour document, there is often a line running all the way down it.
The screen is terrible and i'm not sure if that is faulty. There are lines down it which never disappear with the result it's almost impossible to view a photo on the screen even to decide if it's the one you want to print, still less to do any cropping, formatting etc.
Overall a nice bit of kit, but a shame about the problems especially with the screen.
Worse still, HP does not offer home printer support outside the hours of 8.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday, when of course we are all at work and not able to spend hours on the phone in front of our home printers. Do they expect us to waste precious holiday days sorting out their sub-standard products?
Do not waste your money on an HP product.
ETA: Judging by the number of 'unhelpful' votes, HP fans are very protective.
So, I'll add this:
I'm fairly good with technical things, and have never had any trouble setting up a new computer/gadget/printer before. I spent three or four hours on HP's website following trouble shooting guides. I eventually managed to speak to someone at HP, who agreed that the printer was faulty and told me to return it. I chose to return it for a refund, rather than a replacement. I replaced it with a Canon which was slightly more complicated to set up, but which works perfectly.
I think I'm justified in rating the item one star, in that it was brand new and faulty. It didn't work and shouldn't ever have ended up on my doorstep. Assistance was also extremely difficult to come by at HP.
This printer does exactly what it says on the box. I would highly recommend this to anyone who likes something quick and easy to set up.
Having said all that, set up was very easy, it found the wifi straight away and connected - no problems there.
However it had to go back and now I am the happy owner of an Epson - same price, better build quality and it works!!
Update: This thing eats ink! Mine is always low on ink. I put new ink in and maybe 5 uses later I'm getting ink low warnings. I've only bough the specified HP inks for this and I hardly print in colour. When I do it's always the economy option so I'm not very impressed with it's ink usage. It feels like the starter ink the printer came with actually had more in it than the full cartridges you have to buy. They lasted much longer. I'm also disappointed with the scan option too. It's stopped scanning properly. It won't scan a whole image, just bits of the image which is very annoying. I used the scanner about 3 times prior to this happening. Reducing to 3 stars.
There is no Ethernet port so the only way to network this printer is via its wireless. This is the main issue with this printer, in that it seems to be incompatible with some older routers, in my case a 6 year old Netgear product. The typical symptoms being that it will connect for 30 sec to 1 minute then drop off the network (even at full signal strength). The printer thinks its still connected, but to the router its long gone. It's not a hardware fault as the printer has been replaced and the replacement is just the same. HP support were not inspiring and kasked me to try it with a LAN cable even though this printer has no LAN connection, at one point they insisted I download the scanner and print diagnostic, ok except it just said that it cant find the printer on the network, which was the issue I was calling them about. When they have no more answers from their "script" they tell you to return it to the retailer for replacement. I wasted 2 days on this stupid
The 6520 installed easily (unlike the 5280 which required lots of help from HP) and so far has proved to be much faster and quieter than the old printer and a good colour reproduction, although I haven't used it much for photo printing yet. If photo printing is better than the 5280 and the cartridges last at least as long then I'd give this 5 stars.
Oh, and the double sided copying is handy too.
Other people have seen the quality of photos and have also ordered a printer.
This was one of the printers that apple recommended for my I pad, but at a much better price.
I am looking forward to getting the most out of it over Christmas.
