*EDITED AFTER MUCH RESEARCH!*You know, sometimes it really stinks to be a serious photographer on a budget. I am a wedding photographer by trade, but film photography is more my passion. The problem is that most of my budget is dedicated to digital gear with little left over for analog photography equipment. I decided that I might as well give this budget scanner a try, seeing as my local lab was charging $20 per roll scanned and my local one-hour photo (CVS) seemed to be scanning things with a potato (no really). This review is mainly going to cover the 35mm aspect of this scanner, but I will briefly touch on the other qualities.PROS- Able to scan 35mm film and slides with the built-in adapter- Scans 35mm adequately for this price range- Almost no warm-up time- Controls are easy to use- Accompanying software is pretty decent for photos and documents- VERY easy to create PDF's, OCR is really good- Scanning is relatively fast, although my last scanner was bought in 2004 so my reference point is old...- OSX Lion 10.7 Compatibility (download from Epson website)CONS- Has difficulty reproducing color from scans- Lacks sharpness on some images- Negative holder is a little flimsyI really think the output of this scanner depends on your expectations. I have seen serious photographers love and hate it online...I am somewhere in the middle. For the price of the scanner, it puts out decent images that I would gladly put up on the web. As far as printing out 'up to 13"x19" ', I'm not so sure. If I had the funds, I would have gone with the V700 in a heartbeat, but seeing as I didn't I really can't complain too much. The only REAL issue was the reproduction of colors when it came to scanning slide film. Right off of the scanner they were VERY muted, even Kodachrome which is notoriously saturated. The negative carrier is a little flimsy, but with some care you shouldn't have any problems. As I mentioned above, there are some issues with sharpness, but an unsharp mask takes care of all but the harshest issues.I would highly recommend purchasing Silverfast if you are going to be seriously scanning 35mm. The tools that come with this scanner are just not enough to provide you with GREAT scans. If you are just looking to archive some old family pictures, this will definitely do the trick and you will have some pleasing results, but if you take pride in image quality Silverfast is a must. Dust-removal, color restoration and professional sharpening are all possible with it, and it has saved me hours of hassle. No I do not work for them, and no I don't get a cut. I really can just appreciate software that works well!RECOMMENDATIONS AND SETTINGS:1) I would highly recommend flattening out your negatives before scanning. Scans with a slight curvature will leave you with some scans being out of focus in certain areas. Flattening out my negatives greatly improved my scans.2) Wear anti-static gloves at all times while handling negatives. This will greatly reduce imperfections. If you have compressed air, clean your negatives with short bursts at 12" or more away from the negatives. Hold upright so as to not damage the negatives from the cold.3) If you have Photoshop (as I do) I would recommend skipping the unsharp mask and dust deletion, and instead use the Smart Sharpen filter in CS3+ and removing dust and speckles with the healing tool!4) Patience. Scanning at low DPI will give you poor results. Bump up the resolution - you may wait longer but I guarantee you will be happier! Speaking of which, here are my recommended settings for scanning:Epson Black and white settings (ideal for web):- Professional Mode- Doc Type: Film- Film Type: B&W Negative- Image Type: 16bit Grayscale- Resolution 2400DPI- Target Size: 100%- Unsharp Mask ON, Medium- Dust Removal ON, Medium-High (if needed)- Save as TIFF or JPEGEpson Color Settings (ideal for web):- Professional Mode- Doc Type: Film- Film Type: Color Negative- Image Type: 48bit Color- Resolution 2400DPI- Target Size: 100%- Unsharp Mask ON, Medium- Dust Removal ON, Medium-High (if needed)- Color Restoration ON (if needed - try both)- Save as TIFF or JPEGOVERALLObviously I wasn't expecting this to be anywhere near what my lab puts out, but I was pleasantly surprised to see that it surpassed what CVS could do with higher resolution and truer colors (in most cases). While this isn't a permanent solution for me, I am relatively pleased and would recommend it to those that don't mind putting in the post work to make their images really stand out. This scanner really shines with black and white scans - I haven't scanned a color image that I was TOTALLY satisfied with yet.As far as an office scanner, this is an excellent choice and will provide you with better scans than most all-in-one office solutions on the market!

I purchased this scanner due to a recommendation from two friends who used one to scan in slides. I have hundreds of slides of our kids growing up, fishing trips, camping and so on. This scanner does an EXCELLENT job. I scanned them in on "Full Auto" mode at 600 DPI. 600 will do fine. You have much greater resolution available, but it is unnecessary for slides. Showing them on our 55 inch LED TV is outstanding. No pixeling etc. Just great looking images. And at 600 DPI, printing them results in great images. Before scanning, I used cans of compressed air with the little straw-like tube to concentrate the air spray, to remove dust from both sides of the image. Worked perfectly. One tip on the slides: ALWAYS have the image rectangle in the HORIZONTAL position in the slide holder. Doing so will give you the full image. If you put them in vertically, the top will be chopped off slightly. When needed, you can use your photo review software to rotate the photo to the proper orientation, while the next slides are being scanned. This does 4 at a time and separates each slide into its own separate image. Excellent scanner, not only for the money, but just excellent in general. For anyone who has old slides to scan and was thinking of sending them out for scanning, I'd recommend you do this instead. It dawned on me that if I had sent them out, I'd still have had to sort and name them IF I could remember the details of which tray they came from By scanning them yourself, you take them out of the slide tray and are able to name the images while the next ones scan.Another tip: you scan slides in what is called "Full Auto" mode. But you need to customize the settings. Takes 30 seconds. Select the file you want them saved to; and have them saved in jpg format, for normal use. 99% of people you may want to send them to, will be able to open a jpg file, but perhaps not a TIFF file, which is also an option. So select .jpg for the format. Also select "Dust Removal" and "Color Restoration" in the Customize dialog box, as well as Auto Photo Orientation. To select where to save them and what format, click on "File Save Settings" and select your location by choosing "Other" and then locate the folder you want them in. Regarding Image Format Type, select .jpg as I mentioned.Easier than it sounds from this lengthy note. Literally takes 30 seconds to do the above and you are all set.Great scanner for slides. I'm doing more now as I type this.

Плохо

I purchased an Epson V330 through Amazon to digitize my collection of slides. The scanner arrived quickly and in perfect condition. (Kudos as always to Amazon.) I set the scanner up on a table with my netbook and began the arduous process of scanning slides, four at a time, at the highest physical resolution. Each set of four takes 12 minutes, so over the past week, I've been able to scan over three hundred slides. My netbook screen is quite small and the thumbnail previews of the slides have little resolution. However last night I noticed a horizontal line across the previews, about a third of the way down from the top of the images. Sure enough, the horizontal line effects each and every image that the scanner is producing. I have gone back and quickly surveyed my scans and discovered that the line began to appear after about 100 slides and its been getting more contrasty ever since. I cannot photoshop it out without destroying the images.Epson support determined, after a lengthy test of this and that, that this is a hardware defect. (Knock me over with a feather...) and I am awaiting my replacement scanner. I will go MUCH SLOWER in the future. I'll work in smaller batches and check the results on a big screen more frequently. The image quality of the scans more than meets my expectations but I lost hours and hours and hours of work due to this defect. Now I have to spend time determining which images must be re-scanned. Aargh.Amended: a replacement arrived after two days. I don't know if it is new or refurbished but, in either case, it is working well. I have analysed my past scans and determined that the defect presented itself after about 200 scans. I will continue my work in smaller batches, checking often to avoid redundant work if problems creep in.2nd Amendment: The replacement scanner continues to work flawlessly. I have adequate control of adjustments and every scan is quite good. I have realized now that the scanner crops slides pretty aggressively. There is approx 0.125in lopped of all sides, which is quite substantial for such a small image. When this ruins the framing (which is not uncommon at all), I have to resort to manual selection using the marquee tool. This is quite easy but means that the image must be scanned separately. This is slowing down an already glacially slow process.

I bought this scanner to replace an aging one that required a parallel port, something my new PC is lacking. The V330 installed easily though it would have been helpful to know what all the utilities were about before having to install them. So far I've not used any of them and am not so sure they do much for me.One thing that attracted me about the V330 was that it would scan slides. I have big collection of slides I'd like to digitize but my earlier attempt to do this several years ago yielded poor results but quite a lot of tedious work. My estimation is that with the V330 the results will improve but the amount of work will be at least as much. With my new scanner I first scanned a photo and was impressed with the results - very clean and bright. I also tried four slides and was equally impressed. One image showed some noise in the sky - perhaps scratches or perhaps dust. It took a bit of work to remove those small black dots but the result was worthwhile. However, setting up the scanner for slides was tedious. A maximum of four slides fit into the tray and they are not held at all securely. On loading the third or fourth one it is easy to knock the first ones out. It takes a lot of care but perhaps with practice I'll get better at it.Slides are very small, so I scanned them at maximum resolution - giving me a very slow scan. I didn't time the operation but I did eat lunch while it happened and I finished lunch before the scanner finished the four slides. Otherwise it worked like magic. The scanner picked out the images and cropped them precisely.

--------------------------EDIT (September 1st 2011):--------------------------After returning the unit with the spotty glass, I decided to try again, since all the other reviews were good. It turns out, I probably got a "bad egg" the first time. However, that doesn't give me much confidence in quality control (if quality control even exists in these large companies any more). The new V330 unit (which I inspected in-store) had flawlessly clean glass. I am pretty sure that both of these units were factory-sealed, and that the previous problems with the glass were a failure on the part of quality control in the factory: The cardboard handle on the first unit was not even punched out, and Staples said they don't put open-box units back out with the new ones. So, I have to think that there is huge variation in the glass on these. But, if you get a "good one", it truly can be a perfect scanner.I was able to make breathtakingly good scans of 4x6 photos. The automatic settings do even work well, but it doesn't crop the picture correctly on auto-mode (not an issue for me since I was doing lots of 4x6" photos, and only had to set up the frame size once). There are some software quirks that I found, and I will upload some pictures of the software and other details that technically-inclined types might like.In the end, am updating my rating to 4 stars, in light of the fact that this scanner can be great, but you may have to return it before you get a flawless one. It is a pleasure to work with (providing you get one with good glass). Also the software did play nice with my HP wireless all-in-one (and vice versa :) ).-----------------------------Below is my original (2 star) review:-----------------------------Dear Epson,Nothing is more of a downer for me than to unwrap a new gadget and have my expectations immediately crushed. The sinking feeling that I spent that money and was going to invest my time and energy installing the software and learning to use it, and now I will have to re-think all those plans. Knowing that I'll be burdened with wrapping it back up and making a trip to return it. Well, that is what happened to me just now, with the Epson "Perfection" V330. Here's why:This product should have been called "Dalmation V330". It arrived out of the box with the glass COVERED in faint but visible spots. Worst of all, they are on the INSIDE of the glass, where I couldn't clean them off. I guess I am a perfectionist, and this kind of thing bothers me. I expected this scanner to meet my needs since it had the features I wanted and it had amazing reviews... I guess I was assuming that one of those features was a clean pane of glass on which to scan! Is that so much to ask???Why go through all the work to design all the electronics and software, put them all together, and then skimp on the glass coating or whatever you frugal geniuses at Epson did to create weird splotches on the inside of the glass!??? Maybe you forgot to CLEAN the glass BEFORE you assembled it? Maybe you let moisture inside, cleaned it with dirty water, etc. etc. I have no idea. All I know is it is covered in spots that I can't clean, and now it is going back. If it never left the factory, maybe I wouldn't have wound up feeling so insulted. So, congratulations Epson, you may have saved 5 cents by not cleaning the glass before assembly, but I still have 14 days left on my return window. I'll let you guess which one of those two things is going to have a bigger impact on your Q3 profits,Sincerely,E. Gratis

I've had this scanner for almost exactly a year - I do a ton of scanning of vintage images. This scanner has probably seen over 1000 pages, and the scans are just as perfect as the first one out of the machine. For my purposes, I scan almost everything at 600 dpi and bring it into Photoshop to retouch, sharpen, and correct as needed. So I haven't used most of the image processing tools that come with the scanning software. What I have used extensively is the Epson descreen/unsharp mask functions to help get rid of the dot pattern in old printed magazine illustrations. While not perfect, it has actually done a better job of reducing the dot pattern than Photoshop has.My two complaints - 1, it's kind of slow, but I think that's to be expected at this price point. I'd give it 4.5 stars for that, but won't knock it down to 4. Also, I wish the scanning bed was closer to the edge of the scanner - this would help when scanning books so that I don't break the book spine. A scanner with this feature was hundreds of dollars more than this one, though, so again, I can't really knock it at this price point. Just know that if you are scanning older books, you'll have to push them flat - and you'll have minor problems getting clean scans from images that are very close to the inner binding.Overall, this scanner is 100% worth the money, and has paid itself back repeatedly. I'd be lost without it!

The scanner is small and light, and doesn't try to be more than it is: A good, small no-frills basic color flatbed scanner. The installation routine has an option for custom install, during which you can choose not to install the extra bundled software if you don't want/need it.At the end of the installation, it asks if you want to check online for newer drivers. I did so, and it found a newer driver (22 MB in size). I wish it had done that BEFORE installing the stuff from the CD, but it probably doesn't make much difference either way.Once the software is installed, Windows 7 64-bit found it without fuss. The scanner has some buttons on it, which I don't intend to use, so I will leave their function to other reviewers. The scan utility is pretty standard as scanners go, which is good. It does not bog you down with stylized frames around the windows and animations. It just brings up a rectangular dialog box with some options on it. The default setting is "full auto mode" which I suppose is good for non-technical people. In addition to "full auto mode" you can switch it to "home mode", "office mode" or "professional mode", which have different settings and abilities relevant to each of those profiles. Home mode is more centered around what the image is going to look like. Office mode is more centered around how fast it will scan and what options will be applied to it. Professional mode is full of all kinds of interesting dials and knobs that you can twiddle to apply effects while scanning to get it just right. People who like to fiddle will have a field day with Professional mode.Once you've chosen a mode, the process is pretty straightforward. Do a preview scan to find your image on the glass, select the area you want to scan, rotate/crop it, maybe fiddle a little more, choose what resolution and file type to use, and then scan it.I dropped a star from my review because of one small but very annoying (to me) detail:The software remembers that when I am in "Home" mode I want to scan at 300 DPI, and when I am in "Office" mode, I want to scan at 150 DPI.However, the software does NOT remember that I want to save as JPG in Home mode and PDF in Office mode.Seriously? How difficult is that? Can you really have missed that? Is it a "corner case"? Nobody would ever want to do THAT...When I called tech support, the representative who barely spoke English told me that it was by design, so that you can get exactly what you want each time. Care for some SPIN, anyone? If he had told me that it was a known issue, and they intended to fix it in an upcoming driver release, that would have been acceptable. But no, they played it like it's supposed to be that way, and it's annoying.I suppose that if this is the biggest complaint I can come up with, it's a pretty good scanner and software package.
