I have hundreds of slides that need to be catalogued and saved from fading to red. Now, with this scanner, the slides are being turned into digital images that can be saved on a CD without any trouble. Color, clarity and detail is terrific. This is a good tool and does what it says it can do.

My previous scanner was an SCSI device, and when I upgraded my computer, I was faced with the choice of installing an SCSI card or upgrading to a new USB compatible scanner. I'm glad I chose to buy this scanner. Installed on a Windows XP machine, the installation was simple, and the user interface options allow me to control the scanning operations with very little effort. I've had no problems with the software, and the scanned images are more than adequate to print 8x10 enlargements from my old 35mm negatives.I especially appreciate the transparency scanning capabilities, which allows me to scan old photographs from the negatives rather than the prints. This provides me with better control over the final appearance of my images, and has allowed me to archive much of my early photography in digital format. This scanner is a great value.

I check out a number of the reviews on scanners and finally decided on this one. I'm glad I did. The scanner works great, easy to use, and was priced well. My favorite feature: the software that comes with it lets you scan multiple pictures at the same time and it automatically recognizes each of them separately. This saves a ton of time. I load up anywhere from 4-10 pictures and hit scan. Done!

After several weeks of research, I bought my first scanner, the EPSON Perfection 2400. My goal was to convert several decades prints, film negatives, and slides. In my move to digital, the price of this scanner seemed extremely attractive for all the features it offered. The package also included the venerable Adobe Photoshop Elements (Version 1).Right off the bat, the scanner would not install on my IBM Thinkpad T40, running factory installed Windows XP Pro. I would get a "Cannot Install Hardware. Data is Invalid" message when I connected the scanner even though the software installed successfully. After one week of research, including two one-hour sessions with EPSON support, I ended up reinstalling Windows XP. Epson support was unable to pinpoint the problem the first time but promised to call back within two days. They did not call. When I called again, I spoke to a "second tier support engineer" and she was able to identify a potential issue with my installation of Windows XP. Her recommendation was to re-install Windows XP. After I did that, the scanner was running within minutes.Hardware: The scanner is very fast, and the results look fabulous. On print scanning ability, I would give this scanner top grade even when pitched against the professional grade scanner I have used at work. The scanning of negatives is not that good. The negative scans do not seem to produce very accurate colors and the images don't look as sharp as direct scans. This is certainly a disappointment, because scanning 5 negatives at one time seems like a better idea than loading prints one-by-one. Perhaps I need a better negative adapter; so far I've only been using the one that came along with the scanner.Software: The scanner software leaves much to be desired. The installation of the software occurs in several steps, and it is impossible to intelligently choose the different components. If you have handheld software already installed, Presto! Pix software is installed without giving you a choice. Even though diskspace is not expensive, I think 150MB is excessive for the scanner software. Once the installation is complete, the Start-->Programs menu gets cluttered with about four or five items. The performance of the software itself is irratic and it is not always clear what it is doing. On several occasions, I have scanned a dozen or so images, and the scanner software just vanishes from the screen when I try to save to disk (the taskbar icon stays) and takes all my scans with it. I get the impression EPSON simply packaged software from multiple vendors and ended up in a tangled mess. The poor "Smart Panel" software is the only reason this review does not get five stars. The saving grace is the inclusion of Adobe Photoshop Elements. Adobe Photoshop Elements makes up for almost all the shortcomings of the other "Smart Panel" software; perhaps the high quality of Photoshop Elements accentuates the problems with "Smart Panel" ! Photoshop Elements includes a plethora of features, and the software is very stable and of high quality. Overall, this is a fine scanner and I recommend it without reservation. You can circumvent most of the poor "Smart Panel" software by using Adobe Photoshop elements.

My 6 year old trusty Umax scanner was starting to show its age, so i looked for a new scanner that had good reviews. The Epson Perfection 2480 seemed to be one of the best rated.I use my scanner a few times a week for scanning graphic art.I have found this scanner to be disappointing compared to my old Umax. I find I get cast shadows around my images, so much so, that I took it in for repairs after having it only 3 months. All the major parts that could have been causing the problem were replaced, but I still have the problem, so I assume it is a builit in defect.Too bad. I will probably look for a better scanner for my needs.

No problems with the software, no nagging for registration on each re-installation, but I have not had to re-install. I am 80 and still working in genealogy, I was scanning old photographs, it took a learning period, but no problems of any kind. Also, no problems in ordering or in receiving it. The shipment arrived several days earlier than projected. Thank you for a great job!

The Epson Perfection 2480 was my third attempt at finding a perfect scanner for my needs. I'm trying to convert all of my childhood, my wife's childhood, and my other family pictures to digital for archiving and family distribution. Some of these pictures are in 35mm color negative, some in positive slides, some in some small format negative, and some in old photos. This scanner only allows you to scan three 35mm negatives per pass, so scanning negatives was tedious and time consuming. Plus the firmware on the scanner was set so that for every image pass the scanner moved back to the stop position before it would move on to the next image, rather than begining where the other ended. So for three negatives it would make six large moves, which seems like excessive wear and may make the life shorter. The software worked great, but in the end I returned this item for the Epson 4180, for the extra $90 you get 12 negatives per pass and it seems to be twice as fast. Worth the extra money if you have boxes to scan like I do!

Epson was clearly going for features over quality with this scanner. You don't need to get out a ruler to notice that the images produced are distored. Vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines are all wobbly. On my unit the right inch of the image is noticeably darker than the rest of the image. Colors are inconsistent to, with the center being bluer and the sides begin greener.Yes, this is only $100, so I wasn't expecting "Perfection", but I was expecting distortions and problems to be limited to things I'd have to measure or see only under magnification. With this scanner, just scanning an invoice shows up the problems without even trying to look for them. The packaged OCR software worked great the one time I tried it and I could see using this scanner for OCR and in place of a Fax scanner, but if you care about image quality at all, this is not the scanner for you.

The manufacturer claims this product will install on Windows 2000. Eventually it will, however the installation software failsto notice that a file it attempts to copy to is in a 'Read only' state. This causes the setup process to fail with a nearly useless error message. In addition, if you attempt to register the product online the response to the Internet dial up is: "you have reached a number which is disconnected or no longer in service".One more thing, as you are told to "slide the transportation lock to the unlock position" you are warned "Don't turn the scanner over to access the lock or you may damage the scanner". After that when you attempt to register the product you discover the serial number, they request, is recorded on the bottom of the scanner.George AhearnLos Gatos CA.

I bought this scanner to scan and organize all of my paper photos. I'm very impressed with the quality of the scans, the colors are acurate and the detail is excellent as well. I also tried the negative adapter and it worked great. The software that comes with the scanner is the best part. You can put a photo in the middle of the scanner, press the scan button on the scanner and it determines the orientation correctly (even if the photo is not perfectly straight). It's as close to "unattended" as you can get; you just have to swap the photos. I use it in combination with Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0 and use the "batch processing" feature to name and save all the scanned photos at once. This job would be unmanageble on my old scanner, a CanoScan 620U.I did have a problem with the first unit I bought being defective. I left it plugged in overnight and it was dead in the morning. I was happy enough with the results and low price to buy another one.

Changing cables, restarting scanner, restaring computer, re-installing software.... nothing. When you really need it to work and it consistently fails leaves you're left feeling very frustrated. Do yourself a favor and pay the extra money to get a scanner that will be reliable. This scanner isn't.

I've read the reviews and they weren't very flattering on this scanner. But after careful re-readings it became apparent that most of the complaints dealt with either incompatibility with printers and/or installation of the supporting software. I've run into these problems myself in the past and slowly, but surely, have discovered that they were due mainly,on my part, by not reading the instructions thoroughly. I decided to put my computer know-how, 3 years of playing around with it, to work and see for myself how 'awful' this product may be. (Amazon has a return policy-thank god)After receiving the item i decided to put everything aside initially and just go over the installation guide, noting any ambiguous or difficult to follow passages. The only discrepancy was noted when the guide notes instructions for only Window 95, 2000 and Mac operating systems. (I have a Window ME) I decided that i will follow the instructions for the Window 2000, as it is supposed to be nearly the same product as the millenium edition. It may be just me but the instructions weren't very difficult. The only minor complaint is that the manual didn't contain any detailed instructions on using the 'TWAIN' software and its properties. This can only be found in the actual software manual on the monitor. (go to start button, go to program, go to epson smart panel for scanner, go to user's manual)After the initial read-through i began the installation of the hardware, its connections and finally the software installation. But before i did this i made sure the hard-drive on my dell pentium 2 was defragmented(using the comupter system tools) to organize and clear up any unused space, followed by a restart. I followed the instructions for the Window 2000 on my Window ME thoroughly, noting there was some minor differences in the process but nothing confusing. After the hardware calibration and software installation, i by-passed the optional softwares for now, it prompted me to restart the computer.( It is also noted in the manual guide that the scanner should always be turned on first before the computer itself.) After restart, i started the program, just installed, and the rest was history. Everything ran fine, including the software. The included extra, photoshop limited ed., was really useless since you can't save any changes of the image to your hard-drive.( you can only do that with an upgrade at an additional cost!) After playing around with some of the setting i found the 'TWAIN' as well as the smart panel program to be very novice friendly and efficient.(advanced users will probably feel contempt for this simple program) My first scan was at a resolution of 97 dpi at 100% size of the scanned item. ( 1:1 ratio ) The results were pretty outstanding! At higher resolution the images were so huge and sharp that it used space up to 600 mb on my harddrive! For folks who want to scan and send pictures to friends via emails, a 97 dpi is more than you will ever need, really!. it's as sharp and big as the original print you just scanned. At 300dpi, the image is sharp enough to detect dust and paper texture of the scanned item. At 1200 dpi, the image requires so much space and processing power that it takes more than 10 minutes for the single scan! ( only useful if you are a graphic artist or want 8"x10"s or bigger prints out of your printer. the size of the image on your monitor does not translate equal size in the printed product.)After careful reading of the software instructions found in the program itself, you will find simple steps to save the scanned images to your hard-drive.(e.g. after the scan, close the twain panel. you will see the index panel pop up with a icon image of the scan. click twice on the small icon image to see the full-sized image. this new window has a file button where you can save it to any application or hard-drive of your computer in many different formats, including jpeg and bmp.)All in all, i found this scanner to be of excellent value and image quality. All i can say is to take your time in the installation and prepare ahead of time to get acquainted with the manual guide. who really cares if it take you an hour or two, just as long as it gets done right the first time. i've had this product for several days now and so far have made approximately 80+ scans without a glitch. If you are one of those types who can't stand reading through a manual then you will most likely skip or reverse a procedure and cause error messages to fly around. remember, a computer functions on exact sequential commands and so it's often necessary to follow the directions to the letter. If you are looking to scan images for emails, collecting images on your hard-drive or CD and web-site auctions, this scanner is actually an overkill. the epson 1240 will more than fit the bill for casual users. Hope this helps out anyone out there looking for a good value.

Caution to buyers. Epson software on both Mac and Windows is questionable at best.Mac OSXI started on my preferred platform, running Mac OS X 10.2.5. Right off the bat, I had to go to the Epson web site for compatible drivers as the Install disc software only supported OS 9.x. After installing the appropriate drivers, I opened Photoshop 7.0 and tried to initiate a scan of 4 slides from the Import menu item. Unfortunately, the manual option to scan slides was inexplicably greyed out. I rebooted and tried again. Still the scan slide option was unavailable. Did a cold-reboot and this time the option was available. It appears, that each time I try to use the scanner, the software behaves differently. Sometimes options are available, other times not. Sometimes the scanner "forgets" and scans slides as reflective art.Bottom line: Mac OS X support is terribly lacking. There is no stand-alone scanning application. You must use it within Photoshop or the included 1.0 version of Photoshop Elements.Windows XPSo abandoning the Mac, I tried to get it to work on my Windows XP Home laptop. Long story short, while the software support appears to be better on Windows, it still leaves a lot to be desired. Opening the Import menu in Photoshop Elements under Windows did not even provide an option to scan slides or film. But yet the Autoscan "senses" the film and does the right thing. Problem is, using Autoscan does not allow you to set the resolution or color correction parameters. You are left between a rock and a hard place.I've been using Mac and Windows PCs for nearly 20 years, and if there were a manual or decent help system included, I would even surrender to RTFM. But unfortunately, while the reviews on the scan quality have been good (which at this point is hard for me to confirm), the software cannot be defended. If you decide to buy this scanner, be sure to reserve some significant time working through all the software quirks - and maybe you'll be rewarded for your efforts.I'm not giving up yet, but I only have so much patience.

The very first scan blew my mind and even after doing a bunch it's still amazing how good the quality is using this. There is a light in the cover that turns on when scanning slides or even negatives, this acts to light the slide and not distort the colors. I have read some reviews about buggy software with this scanner, but I simply downloaded the drivers directly from Epson's site and used them to install the scanner and have had no problems.

Or use at your own risk. It took me a month to isolate problems after installing Crucial memory in the computer. Bought what EPSON recommended, the Belkin 2.0 card. It froze the EPSON Smart Panel. The essiscsi.dll dissapeared from the registry. The ecbteg.dll and ebpport.dll could not be found. The new SmartPanel and Twain driver from the epson.com does not work in Windows ME. Had to uninstall the Epson scanner, printer, belkin card, and clean registry with utility program. Then, reinstall one by one, take the new memory out to make it work at 72 dpi. The slide stuff does not work at all. A big major project and a waste of time. I will not buy any more Epson products any longer. Bad service support and response. Sorry, I thought this company had its act together. Not very happy with their service and products. Go somewhere else. Sorry, I can't recommend other scanner. That's all, folks.

We had it up and running in nearly no time. More important, once it was running it was easy-to-use and the quality of the scanned images was remarkably crisp. Called Epson (in California) and was advised to download a new driver. It was 10.5meg in size and after downloading and installing, the scanner continued to give me problems. It would scan a 35mm slide but would not enlarge it and would not print anything but a 1"square pic. After several calls to Epson (costing me for the calls) since they do not have an 800# for technical problems. I decided that it was not worth the trouble and returned the product to Amazon. Of course since it was not there problem it will cost me to pay for the return. I feel that the tech. manuals were not well written and seemed to be geared toward those using Windows and not Macintosh.

PROS: I needed a cheap scanner that will let me scan old 35mm slides. At the same time, I didn't want to buy just a photo scanner which had no use after my personal project. I was very impressed with the quality and didn't need to use higher resolution then 1200 which is about 2Meg file size. I also had some old color positives and black and white negatives which I was able to convert into digital images. Great for multipurpose.CONS: I scanned about 400+ 35mm slides and notice that the software is a little buggy.1. Sometimes after a scan when I would go to switch to the save/view window, the window would not popup and I had to scan again.2. After scanning multiple slides about 50 I went to save them and got a "not enough disc space error". I didn't have the option to make space, it just exited out and I lost all my work.3. Sometimes scanning a few slides it wouldn't properly align the borders. I had to rescan or scan one by one.

Some of my underwater slides have a color range that is hard to get scanned with any scanner (especially the silver fish in front of blue water with sun in background), that's where a high-end dedicated slide scanner may do better. Epson Perfection 1640SU Photo ScannerI have an old and trusty Nikon 1000 scanner that has done its duty by me for many years. However, I do a lot of medium and large format work and regret not having a more versatile film scanner. Unfortunately, the big scanners vary in cost from a bit too much to near extortion. Since my flatbed scanner was old and horrible I decided to look into buying one of the better scanners with a transparency head. After a great deal of dithering I settled on the Epson 1640 SU.Drivers are available for Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000 and NT 4.0 I installed into my Win 98 machine with minimal effort, using the USB interface. I went from box to up and running in less than a half hour. The transparency head comes in it's own storage case with a set of film holders for standard film sizes (35mm, 120mm and 4x5, and another for doing Epson instant photo prints). It rests on the scanning glass, so it takes all of 5 seconds to install.Accompanying Epson software includes TWAIN drivers, Smart Panel (an easy scan and save interface), and Film Factory Lite (home photo management software). Also included are Adobe PhotoDeluxe and Photoshop 5.0 LE. Since I have the Adobe profession products on my system I did not load these, but they are accepted standards. I did load Scansoft TextBridge Pro, a very nice optical character recognition package. Also included are some ArcSoft utilities and a special offer for Monaco Systems color matching software. This makes a package deal which is only exceeded by HP's top of the line scanner, which costs almost twice as much and has less scanning power.I used a negative from my old Hasselblad with a 150mm lens. I scanned the entire negative at 3600 dpi at the 14 bit black and white setting. File size was 98.87mb and it took about 2.25 minutes to scan. I scanned the image directly into Photoshop 6.0. Resolution and image tonal range was excellent, and extreme enlargement showed image breakdown to be very slow. For my kind of work, the digital image was nearly equivalent to a photographic image. I would rate this as excellent, unexpectedly good for a general purpose scanner.35mm slide scanning is not as good though. The thickness of the slide makes focus a bit softer and there is no holder for slides. I recommend removing the slide from the paper mount and putting it in the 35mm film holder. Then remount the slide in a plastic, reusable mount. Scanning this way, you get an image that is every bit as good as the 120 image. 4x5 scanning is also great, but you need to watch your file size. Use the provided film holders whenever possible. They take a lot of the trickiness out of the process. The TWAIN interface is a bit complicated. They have taken the liberty of simplifying operation for the photographer or home user who is uncomfortable with scanning technology. This is all well and good, but once you've got your feet wet and are ready to take direct control the interface feels a bit clumsy. Don't get me wrong, you can do just about anything you want at the scanning point, just expect to have to spend a bit of time with the advanced manuals on the CD.This scanner is perfect for the amateur or professional photographer who has high standards but lacks the budget for exotic equipment. It is extremely well built and easy to use. With its high resolution it should perform satisfactorily for many years to come.

If you ever used a professional scanner, then you probably know that it is impossible to get the same results with consumer scanners. I learned this the hard way. I bought at least four different consumer scanners expecting similar results to the scans I made with my old HP professional scanner, but ended up returning them all -- the quality of the scans were far from my expectations. I recently bought Epson 2400 and decided that I am going to keep it. The major factor for my decision was of course the quality of the scans -- it was noticeably better than the other scanners in this price range. Another major factor was the software. I downloaded and installed Epson TWAIN driver for Mac OS X (it is available for download at no charge from Epson's website). Now I utilize Photoshop Elements' Import menu, and I have full control over the scan parameters, or, if I choose, I go to automatic mode and importing scans becomes as user friendly as Wawa's sandwich ordering touchscreen. Imported images might need some minor tweaking in Photoshop before they will look close to the original. The final output is not bad at all. Again, don't expect breathtaking crispy-clear results of professional scanners, but it is pretty good for a consumer product. If you are a Mac user looking for a reasonably priced scanner, give Epson 2400 a chance, you might keep it.

I had this scanner out of the box, software installed and in 20 minutes i was scanning. I had read some reviews where other people had trouble with installing the software. Not so for me! It was a breeze. This product is simple to set-up and i am truly impressed with it's capability. I was scanning negatives in no time as well as pictures. I am truly satisfied. You can't go wrong for the money.

I really enjoy this scanner. The USB 2.0 link is fast, and every item scanned has turned out great. I really enjoy Photoshop Elements 2.0, which is included. I have not missed any features not included in this Photoshop lite. The scaner control panel program is nice, but I usually just use the scanner from Photoshop. Some of the defaults with the control panel are not as detailed as I would like. Perhaps there is a way to change the defaults.I have only scanned one set of negatives, but those scans turned out quite well. This is a good scanner with great software at a great price.

this is a great scanner for the price, i've had far less trouble (make that no trouble) with it than 2 other scanners i've had in the past that were in the same ballpark for price.it seems to be seamless with my power mac.Now it is 2008 and I just lost the scanner when I moved. It was still working perfectly, all beat up and taped on the bottom and NO PROBLEMS with the images. This is a good, good product.

I read the other reviews complaining about the Epson software, and figured those people just didn't know what they were doing. WRONG! They were right. Smart Panel does NOT work. The buttons on the scanner can be configured to work with other programs, but one has to spend some time digging to figure this out. I have spent an entire day on this -- trying the updated drivers, etc., etc. Why Epson passes off the Smart Panel support to the 3rd party Newsoft is beyond me. They should eliminate the "Smart Panel" entirely. The documentation also stinks. I haven't had enough time to fully rate the scans themselves, but so far they seem good. I'm just soooo disappointed with the lack of ease of use.

I am dispointed. The software is limited for scanning films. You cannot select a picture of a negative film, it wants to scan the whole 6 pictures. That's a lot of memory and most of all a lot of time wasted. I had a green background with some negatives that I can get rid of with a manual corrections with the driver, but each time I pre-scan it forgets about the settings and do it wrong again. You can't have it do automatic color corrections with corrected settings. Also each time you go back and forth between the driver and the picture viewing tool it will pre-scan even if you don't want to. At last and not the least it won't detect films greater than 35 mm. I had a lot of frustration with the software and I am goind to try something else.

I got this scanner to replace a UMAX 1220S that I had before. The UMAX had one big problem - I couldn't turn it off. It sat on my SCSI chain and if it saw any traffic it would stay on - since I have CD-ROMs on the same chain it was on constantly! After a while being constantly turned on must have hurt something because after a while I started getting chromatic distortion on sharp edges. So it became time to replace my scanner. After a lot of research, I settled on either the 1240U or the 1640SU - one thing that helped me decide on Epson instead of another brand is that Epson has helped the Linux scanner programmers (the SANE project) to write drivers for their scanners, unlike other manufacturers that seem to want to keep their hardware interfaces a secret. After some more deliberation, I decided to go for the 1640SU over the 1240U. The deciding factor? Was it the increased resolution? No - for my purposes 1200dpi would be enough. Was it the fact that it has both a SCSI and a USB interface? No - I had already decided that I didn't want the hassle of a scanner connected to my SCSI port and that I was going to use a USB scanner. So what was the deciding factor that made me spend an extra $$? It seems silly, but it's true - the 1640SU has a power switch. Yes, I was tired of a scanner with no power switch and no way to turn it off. The 1240U is supposed to go into "sleep mode" after some time of not being used, but then again my 1220S was supposed to do that, and you know how that turned out. Also, I had read that there were issues with scanning wide material on the 1240U (supposedly reflections from the ribbon cable inside can leave a bright band across the scan), plus the 1640SU had generally better reviews. So I bought it.I can say that this scanner does everything I expected and more. The Windows scanning software works fine (I made sure to follow the instructions when I installed it), and then I tested on Linux. My first test was a disaster - the preview looked awful, and the scan was completely green. Then I compiled the latest version of sane (www.mostang.com/sane) and xsane (same site) and tried again. This time it worked perfectly! For grins I tried a 1600x1600 scan of a magazine cover (combined text and picture). The borders of the text were sharp with no chromatic distortion, and I could see all of the halftone dots in the scan. Perfect! As an added bonus, the scanner is *much* quieter than my previous one. The 1640SU makes a low whine when scanning, while the 1220S made a loud rumble. In my opinion, the quietness shows just how much better constructed this scanner is. Also, it has a smaller footprint than the 1220S (although it is somewhat taller). All in all, I am *very* satisfied with this scanner.

I have owned and used this scanner for more than a year now. Its intallation was very smooth and its output is always almost perfect, not rquiring any further adjustments. 1200dpi is a lot of resolution that is required for most line art publications. I have not used the software package as it is really functionally very limited, particularly the ocr software, but again I doubt that any scanner in the same price range comes with a respectable ocr software (as omnipage). The scanner's control panel is a very large program (about 150MB) and although it offers many options I have not required those. As a whole, I have been very satisfied with this product although I do not depend on the supplied software package.

I wanted to scan a large number of slides, specifically some slides for my mom for her for a christmas gift. I did extensive investigation into several scanners, including a scanner that was exclusively a slide and negative film scanner. I ended up choosing this Epson model and I have been extremely happy with it. It is very easy to use. On the manual setting, you can preview the slides and then alter their brightness and contrast before scanning them. I've set the image quality merely to 1200 dpi, and the images have come out with fantastic clarity and detail, and yet the bitmap file sizes are a reasonable 5MB (and for those folks who don't have great amounts of hard drive space available, compressed jpeg files are another option). The scanner has done a fine job of scanning regular prints as well.

I've been tremendously happy with the quality of the scans from the Perfection 2400. If all you need to do is make 640x480 scans for the www from prints you made at the local 1-hour, this is more scanner than you'll ever need. However, scan resolution is sufficient to make brilliant 8x10 prints from 35mm negatives/slides. The included Epson software leaves a little to be desired -- it won't, for example, install on an alternative partition on your disk. Also, you will certainly have to use a photo manipulation application to tweak the levels and colour curves before you get your pictures right. But spend a little time to learn how your scanner works, and you'll have smashing pictures in a short time. If you're adept at working image manipulation programs (Photoshop Elements 1.1 (not the new 2.0) is included with this product; but I have been happier with the freely available GIMP), you'll have professional scans at a fraction of what it used to cost not so long ago.

Bought this scanner yesterday and also bought a USB hub, because I needed an extra to connect it to. Spent about 5 hours trying to get it to work. Somehow the TWAIN driver wasn't associated with the scanner. Uninstalled everything and tried again this morning. The only thing I did differently was attach my digital camera in the usb hub first, then added the scanner. Then everything worked beautifully. I had the camera connected directly to the PC at first, and then after buying the hub, never reconnected it before trying out the scanner. I guess the TWAIN driver was confused or something was confused and it was first looking for my camera and then the scanner. At first, I just re-installed the TWAIN driver and not any of the other software, just to see if I could get it work at all with other programs I already had. Worked beautifully. Then added the rest of the software and crossed my fingers. And it all installed correctly this time and worked great. I was concerned about a previous mention of not being compatible with Windows 98 unless it was Windows 98 second edition. However, that is not the case. I don't have second edition either and it worked fine. The scanner is quick, quiet and produces high quality images. The software is user friendly (after I finally got it installed correctly) and automatically recognized my printer, e-mail program, etc., for the one touch features. As far as editing, I haven't played enough with that yet, but am a novice at this, so I am sure it will be adequate. I'm sure it would have been easy to install yesterday if it had even occurred to me that something else plugged into the USB port had changed and that I had to reinstall the other devices BEFORE adding another one. Overall, quite pleased!!

What a nightmare! DO NOT BUY THIS SCANNER, especially if you are buying it as a replacement for a current scanner. The software being shipped with this product conflicts with previously installed scanner software (even if you've uninstalled the old scanners software). Technical support, which is NOT toll-free is awful. What's worse? When you go to the Epson website to download the current patch files for the bad software that was shipped, it doesn't work! This product is horrendous!

I've enjoyed the superb quality of my Epson printers & wanted to give them a try for my next scanner. For the price, you can't beat the quality of the scan or the fact that it includes a 35mm film adapter. But I do have a couple of issues that are serious enough for me to write about.1) Dust. There was enough dust under the glass on the first unit I received to warrant exchanging it. Now that I have the 2nd unit, there is still dust (Epson quality control is lacking), but not as much. It is not at all noticable when scanning at 72dpi (for uploading to the web), but is *very* noticable on-screen when scanning at 300dpi or greater for printing. Fortunately, it is barely noticable when printed. I've not yet decided if this is enough for me to send it back again.2) The Smart Panel software interface pops up randomly, and it's VERY annoying. Even if I haven't scanned anything since booting up, it will just open for no reason. Closing it does no good, it will open again. Minimizing it does no good, it will keep refreshing. Epson referred me to their 3rd party software vendor, NewSoft, where I found the following in their FAQ:"ESP2-0013 Why the Smart Panel interface will pop up randomly? The problem was due to the scanner driver detect the wrong hardware code to launch Smart Panel. Our development team are working on the issue. Please visit NewSoft website for further release notice, if there's any new Patch to cover this issue."Great, no end in sight. If not for these two significant bugs that should be easily remedied with a little Quality Control, it would be an unbelievably wonderful unit for the price.

The Perfection 2400 scanner is the first Epson product that I have bought. The scanner and software installed on my HP Laptop running XP Pro. The photo scans are fine, however, the Copy applet does not recognize my HP p1100 printer. I contacted the Epson support line and they recommended that I set up a dummy Epson printer. The copy utility will now run. The problem is that you need to keep the Epson dummy printer as the default in order to get the copy utility to run and then change to your printer to make a copy. After making copies, you then need to reset you printer to the default printer...
