I am no techie by any stretch of the word, but anything that is quick simple easy and fast, I will take. My hubby purchased the scanner for us to scan our wedding pix and in no time I had scanned over 100 pictures. It is quick and quiet, I did not have to crop, lighten, clean up not one single picture. I have recommended this scanner to a lot of my friends. I don't think the software that comes with it is easy to use so my hubby has us using Photoshop, which is just fine by me. I say get it, worth every penny

I bought this scanner shortly before Christmas in haste based on recommendations that the image quality would be excellent. I installed it shortly after Christmas after purchasing a separate USB cable, because the one included was too short, and downloading Win/XP software, because the included software was marginally XP-compatible. Once I got everything installed, the frustration increased. I can't scan to copy (my main use for a scanner) because that utility is incompatible with my HP Photosmart printer. I can't scan to fax since no such utility is available. Scanning to files is very slow and noisy, and directions for adjusting resolution, etc. are totally inconsistent with actual operation. The OCR package lacks much-needed flexibility. Contacting Tech Support at Epson and the software company, NewSoft, has been completely useless. As an Engineering executive, I do a great deal of work with computers, and this is clearly the worst software I've ever seen.If it's too late to return this scanner, I'll donate it to a school as a charitable contribution (and hope that the school accepts it). In any case, I'll do more research and get a scanner from another manufacturer. Further, I'll never buy any Epson product again. By the way, the one star rating is one too many.

The first Epson 1250 I purchased was a disaster. There were streaks inside of the glass. The scan head would lock up. When I was able to complete scans, the results were less than favorable. Photos scanned would have a dark blue hue and text scanned would have a dark gray hue. I tried various settings and reloading all of the software. Customer support was closed. My second Epson 1250 was a disappointment from the moment I opened the box. The first thing I noticed about the unit was the finger prints inside of the glass. Plus there were streaks and a couple of hairs thrown in for good measure. I tried it anyway (with the software from the first scanner), just to see if I would have the same troubles I had with the first unit. It scanned without a hitch, except for the extras inside of the unit. I just returned this one to [Amazon.com] today. When I get my refund, I guess I'll look at a Canon or maybe an HP. I've always heard good things about Epson. I never had any second thoughts about ordering an Epson product. Now, with the lack of quality control and the lack of an 800 number for customer support and the lack of 24/7 support, I seriously doubt I will ever purchase any Epson product again, nor will I recommend Epson to any of my customers. It's a shame, because I'm looking for a photo quality printer also.

I just got this scanner to replace a Umax Scanner. Ihave never had anything but a umax, and decided to try something new. I am glad I did. This scanner is fantastic. I could not believe the quality of th first 2 test scans I did. Even in low resolution the scan looked amazing! I was pleasantly surprised. The only reason I did not give a 5 star rating is because of the software. First, it is not the easiest to use (especially compared to the umax). It is not as hard as other reviews state, but it is not simple. Second, the software is not MAC OSX Native. It works fine in classic. Although the Epson website says OSX software is on the way (another reason I bought this over another UMAX).I am an art teacher, and illustrator, and would use this scanner for jobs in both fields. This scanner is well worth the money. You won't be disappointed.

As most of the previous reviewers have stated, it's a wonderful little scanner. But I just can't get over how poor the software is. In an age where Windows XP seems to anticipate my every move, working with the clunky software provided is really annoying. Here's the problem -- you don't get just one comprehensive program to do your scanning, you get ArcSoft Photoimpression, Epson SmartPanel, New Soft OCR, Epson TWAIN and Epson Film Factory Lite. Each of these looks entirely different and you can't move seamlessly from one to another. Want to enlarge that scan? Launch a program. Want to print the scan? Launch another. And each time you launch one, the previous one shuts down so you have to relaunch it if you want to continue scanning! Plus, it appears that none of the software designers has ever seen the standard Windows menu interface. These things visually look like some cheap game you bought in the $4.99 rack.Unless I'm missing something, this software appears to believe that I bought the scanner to make only one scan -- ever. It seems to be saying "You REALLY want to make another scan? You already made one. Well, ok, but I'll make you wait while I re-launch."Like I said, good scanner, tiny footprint . . . but I'd appreciate any suggestions for better software.

I purchased the 1640SU scanner for our office. We use the scanner on our "image cneter" computer which is shared by everyone in the office. The hardware works well: the image and color quality is superb, and the scanning speed is pretty good. The TWAIN driver and control works well, and there's a simple "auto mode" for people who want to scan their documents without worrying about scanner settings.Because our "image center" computer has only USB expansion (no PCI slots), we cannot use a SCSI interface that would speed up scanning tremendously. This has the unfortunate side-effect of seriously slowing down scanning at the highest resolution when the scanner has to temporarily stop scanning while waiting for data transfer to complete. This leads to a "back hitching" of the scan head which slows things down considerably. As I mentioned, this scanner is installed on a shared computer. Unfortunately, there is a really bad bug with the Epson Smart Panel software when installed on a networked Windows 2000 system. When this software is installed, it prevents people from logging in and using the computer -- it repeatedly throws an error dialog box that won't go away. We had to uninstall the program. That's too bad, because if the ESP program worked, it would have made the scanner even more useful and easy-to-use -- the ESP software allows you to assign a preferred scanning software to the push-to-scan button built into the scanner. The big problem with the Epson scanner is the awful technical support. Epson's web site is practically useless for technical support; and their non-toll-free telephone-support line, while cheerful, was useless. With our problem with the ESP software, Epson would not support the software; instead, they referred me to NewSoftInc (who wrote the software for Epson). NewSoftInc's web site is even less helpful, and I've not been able to get technical support, even after waiting on the phone for 25 minutes!Overall, this is a good scanner. I would have given 4 stars, even with the ESP software issues; but given the terrible technical support, I've decided to bump them down to 3 stars.

I have always wanted to be able to scan slides, but never could justify the high price of doing so in the past. After reading the many negative reviews of this scanner I was hesitant to order, but did so anyway, having been so pleased with previous Epson products. I received my scanner a couple of days ago and immediately checked to see if there was any dust under the scan glass, there was none, the entire unit was clean as a "whistle". I agree the scan rate is sooooo slow, especially when scanning slides, but the end product is worth the wait. After running them through Adobe Photo Shop and using the Auto Adjust feature, they are as good as the day I originally took the pictures, and that was in 1958. I would highly recommend this low price scanner to anyone interested in scanning slides...

I was looking for a reasonable priced Scanner for Photo's & Slides. I found the Epson Perfection 1250 Photo/Slide scanner to be what I was looking for. After reading the reviews I was a little hesitant because it said it was very complex to operate.I ordered this scanner because it was reasonably priced and had what I required. Upon receiving the Scanner I was totally impressed with the ability to copy 25 year old slides very well. The Epson Smart Panel makes it very easy to operate. I would highly recommend this scanner to everyone. Also copies photos very nicely and fairly fast. The only problem I had was loading the software for the scanner. This was caused by Norton 2002. Once I disabled the Norton 2002 software it was a breeze. Try it you will like it.

I had read many good reviews of Epson Perfection models, so when the 1250 Photo came on the market I decided to give it a try. Installation was smooth on my PC (930 MHz, 128 Mbyte PIII) and the documentation was clear. Only problem was, there were horrible vertical color streaks over about 2/3 of the scan. The remaining 1/3 looked fine. I double checked all the settings and tried scanning various documents, making sure the document was flat, the glass was clean, etc. always with the same result. In a word, horrible. So I returned the unit for a replacement. (Thank you Amazon for making the return process so painless). Thanks to Amazon, in less than a week, I had a new unit on my desk. Again, installation went smoothly and I looked forward to using my scanner. But again, horrible color stripes, this time over 1/3 of the scan (at least there was some improvement). And this time, the scan head made a terrible noise during portions of the scan. I couldn't believe it! I'm an engineer, so I know something about hardware and software. I always check for system incompatibilities or driver problems first, and this time I could find none. Apparently, Epson is having some quality control problems. So I'm giving up at this point and looking for another scanner.

We shopped around before buying the Perfection 1250 and are fairly happy with it. Initially had some problems under Windows 2000, but updated TWAIN driver (v5.51A) and plugging the scanner directly into the PC's USB port cleared that up (there were problems using it connected via my MS Natural Keyboard Pro's USB ports, though the setup poster does advise direct connection to the PC or a powered USB hub. Unplugging the scanner when it was connected via the keyboard would result in my machine restarting). The scan speed could be better, but is acceptable. The included software is very convenient and works well. We used the AUTO setting and saved to files, it automatically differentiated each picture and saved it to an individual file, and straightened them. The WebPhoto (?) software is also nice for uploading your scanned pictures to a sharable website automatically. Overall, very pleased with this scanner!

I'm quite pleased with the Epson 1250, I've primarily used the scanner for archiving old photos. For a scanner (in that price range), it provides excellent image quality at 1200x2400 dpi. Setup w/ Epson software and USB connection was a breeze, literally taking about a minute. The included software is quite good for most beginner to intermediate users. In addition to TWAIN capture software it includes OCR capability (text recognition), an image editor, and web picture hosting. More advanced users will make better use of Photoshop and other software, but you still can't beat the scan quality at this price point. Also, hardware seems to be fairly rugged and the scanner has small footprint and very slim profile. I compared various scanners in a retail store, the only ones that have a slimmer profile are the Canon CanoScan models (which cost about twice as much for 1200x2400 scan resolution).

I researched multiple scanners in (this)price range before finally purchasing the 1250 photo. My primary use was scanning for the Web, so the 48-bit, 1200x2400 resolution fit perfectly (Web supports 72dpi - scan at hi-res then resize) into my plans. I've used both the 35mm neg adapter and the slide film adapter and they both perform flawlessly (although the negs seem to turn out better). The "dust" mentioned above is true although it is actually a fog under the glass that I've seen before in certain scanners. My guess is that it's a result of step taken (or not taken) in production. I sent Epson an email inquiring about it and they told me that I can take it in to an authorized retailer for repair. I thought of opening it up (negating my warrant) and cleaning it myself but I honestly cannot see it showing up in my scans. The neg/slide adapter pushes the scan down a couple of inches, missing the fog. The only re-touching I do in Photoshop is for minor dust specs that reside on the front of the glass. (...)...All-in-all this is a great little scanner for the money - the fog is a minor detail. The final result is perfect for my medium.

Contrary to the experience of another reviewer, dust was not at all a noteworthy problem in my unit. The vast majority of the dust specks I have scanned were above the glass and on the pictures scanned. Users must be careful to clear these areas of dust prior to scanning. I found a dust-removal (anti-static) spray helpful in this regard. The extremely few specks of dust under the glass were no more numerous than in a more expensive ScanJet I have used many times at my workplace. The image quality in the scans is tremendous compared to other scanners I have seen. The texture of the photographic paper is clearly visible in higher resolutions, for example. The colors are also more true to the original image than in the other scanners I have experienced recently. The film-scanning attachment is a great deal at this price-point. I have used this unit quite a bit to scan photos and slides at resolutions up to 1200dpi, and I have been very pleased with the results.

I hesitated a long time before buying this scanner, because it's very hard to know what quality, what definition one needs to get good prints from slides. This scanner is easy to install, easy to use. For slides, you must use the Twain 5 option in your Twain menu, but everything is very intuitive and you'll find the learning curve quite smooth. If you are looking to scan slides so that family memories, etc... are not lost, then this scanner is very very good quality for money, the prints you'll get ( with an epson 890 photo printer, it works wonders) are very good. obviously, we are talking of amateur photography here, I guess a professionnal who sells his photographs would want something with extra-definition.So if you want to be amazed and moved, to rediscover the past... go for it!

After reading the poor reviews of the software that is included with this scanner, I decided to only install the Epson TWAIN software and not use the Smart Panel software at all (both TWAIN and Smart Panel are included on the software CD). The TWAIN software works wonderfully for me on my iMac running OS 9.0, and it allows greater control over resolution, quality and image size than previous versions of Epson TWAIN software once the "automatic" setting is turned off. The most impressive element of this scanner is the stunning image quality. The colors are incredibly accurate and the scans are sharp and clear for every resolution I've tried so far. This is by far the best scanner I have ever owned or used. I highly recommend it!

The software, however, leaves a lot to be desired. The TWAIN driver works well, but the "SmartPanel" software is a horror: don't install it! The image editing program that ships with it is high on flash but low on usefulness (there's no scaling option, for example). The software isn't that big of a deal, though... All you need is an image editing program that can acquire from a scanner. I use graphics workshop professional, which meets all my needs quite well.So if you need a quality affordable scanner and are willing to roll your own software, I highly recommend it.

However, my problem is - communication with Epson technnical support. There is no simple way to resolve simple question of scanner/printer compatability, other than long-to-wait pay-phone connection. To request assistance in initial installation i was invited to fill form with mandatory questions i have no idea about (sound card type, port address, irq etc). It took day of contacts with Gateway to find it all out, by then i spent money on telephone conversations with Epson and resolved problem. By the way, my installation problem resolved when i changed order of things: turned on computer first and scanner second, opposite to what is written in manual.(This was brilliant idea of Epson tech. support specialist over the phone). Since than i have no problems, and hope it will be like this forever.

To make textures for 3D characters you need a good scanner, needless to say, this scanner done the job incredibly. To demonstrate, I scanned in a picture of a face from a magazine, the scan came out so clear you could see the pores and facial skin texture. If you are a high end user -- 3D artist, texturer then don't shy away from this scanner. It's incredible, plus you will still have enough money left over to buy a 3D graphic book!

With all the hype about the image quality of Epson scanners, I was disappointed by the lack of quality that came from the one I just got. In short, there's dust under the glass, inside the scanner where it's unreachable, that I can see with the visible eye, and that is magnified in scanned images. Image quality would be excellent except there's dust specks all over the place on the images. Since consumers have complained of a similar dust problem with previous Epson scanners, I thought the company would fix it with this new model, but they didn't. In fact, quality control doesn't seem to have improved--there's even a fingerprint on the underside of the glass. I'm returning this one and getting a Cannon or HP instead.

The Epson Perfection Photo 1640SU is an excellent scanner. Although a bit more pricey than other home scanners, its resolution is unrivaled for the price. I like the one-button scanning it provides. The setup and software are easy. The automatic scanning modes are wonderful and do a great job, however, I like scanning from the TWAIN software from Photoshop because of the customizability it provides. The photo attachment was really surprising to me in the resolution that it provides. I have scanned 35 mm negatives and enlarged them to 5 x 7 inch prints; these prints look like photographs. I even did an 8x10 inch photo enlargement. The photo looks great on the monitor, however, it took forever to do any manipulations. This was not the fault of the scanner, but rather due to the large size of the file (which was around 700 Mbytes). It ended up crashing my computer. I will stick to 5x7 inch prints or use lower resolution scanning in the future.I especially like the on-off switch on the front of the scanner; my previous scanner did not have this item. I have scanned many photographs now and have acheived magnificent results. This is a scanner that can do routine jobs but also specialized business-quality scanning. Thank you Epson!

I referred to the user manual and discovered that this feature will only work for Epson Printers. I was then forced to call EPSON technical support for help. It took me 3 days and nearly 2 hours on the phone with these technicians and they were not able to resolve my problem. It turned out that I had a bad unit delivered to me. What made things worse is that EPSON refused to send me a new replacement scanner, they say it's against there policy. They wanted me to bring it to one an EPSON repair centers, located two towns away. I figure, like most people, that if I buy a new scanner and never use it I should get a new replacement and not one requiring repair. With AMAZON's return policy I have been able to get my money back for the scanner, but I'm still out $35.18 in phone expenses trying to resolve my problems with this scanner. EPSON does not have an 800 phone number for technical support questions, and any expense incurred trying to rectify a problem with any EPSON product becomes yours expense. My advise to any one contemplating the purchase of an EPSON product, is to keep this in mind "you may be paying for more than the item you are purchasing. Don't buy EPSON!

When scanning pictures and graphics, even at the lower resolutions, the quality is amazing. There is a a button on the scanner that when you press it, it brings up a menu asking what application you want to import the scan into. This scanner is very fast, usually taking 5 seconds on simple pictures. The speed doesn't decrease much at all when scanning at higher resolutions. The time to warm-up is only a few seconds. The price on this scanner is tough to beat, along with the quality. I am very impressed and couldn't be more pleased.

Having owned and installed many scanners, I wanted a new simple scanner for my private office. The Epson 610 installed instantly with the included usb cable, and I was scanning within 5 minutes. It's fast, and the bundled twain driver works well. Even the basic OCR software works well for basic word processing - but you might want to install a high-end OCR software like Textbridge Pro for more options. Color photos scan well, but you get far better color if you don't choose the 'quick scan' option.

The scanner is a great piece of hardware, but the included software, TwainScan L, is very limited. The user can't easily adjust scan resolution or control brightness or contrast. Default settings are quite dark and must be adjusted with software after scanning.

Went the HP route first. Couldn't get it to work. Tried everyting. Punted! Bought the Espson and fired it up on the 1st try. Have had it for about 3 months now and coupled with an HP p1000 printer, I can duplicate, and I mean duplicate pictures. Scaned a professional 8x10 of my little boy to near perfection. The Twain software is great. Only down side is at times I need to place some thick stock paper behind the picture so I don't scan "through" it. I am now putting photo archives in the computer weekly. Very simple to use and quick. Great to be able to adjust BPI from 300 to 2400 based on what you want.

A scanner was my first requirement after getting my iMac--needed to put pictures out to relatives. This scanner set up easily w/o any glitches. I was scanning within 5 minutes after taking it out of the box. The quality of the scanned pictures is great, even on low scan settings. I've received compliments from friends on the quality of the softcopy pics. There is also a few software packages included, but I haven't found them all too useful yet: maybe I'll learn what they'e good for. Bonus was two free software programs from mail. I'm happy with my purchase.
