With box upon box of photo slides gathering dust in a closet, I decided to look for a photo scanner to move some of my favorites to digital format. After reviewing several on-line, including buyer comments, I chose the Epson V330 Photo Scanner. The price was great ($99) and the photo quality is superb!!! I intend on framing several photos from a 20 year ago backpacking trip in the Rockies plus photos of family vacations. The scanner was very easy to use and the scanning process is quick. I also plan to use it in my fiber artistry. Highest recommendation!

I ordered this scanner based on a recommendation in a recent issue of Popular Photography magazine. I've had it for almost a month now and have used it mostly for scanning 35mm slides (up until a few years ago when I bought a digital camera, my primary film for shooting was slide film). I have scanned some older b&w and color photo prints as well, ranging in size from 2x3 inches to 8x10 inches. The scanner powers up quickly and scans accurately. I wish the resolution on the slides was better (sharper), but for printed photos the resolution is excellent. The scanner includes software for photo retouching & fixing, but I've not yet used that as I already have Corel (formerly Jasc's) Paint Shop Pro ("poor man's Adobe Photoshop"). The scanner produces the images as jpg files and uses an Epson color space scheme, but my Paint Shop Pro has no problem reading and converting that to a non-proprietary color space scheme.Overall I am very pleased with this product and would recommend it for someone looking for a reasonably priced, capable scanner.

This scanner is simply outstanding. The resolution is perfection. The best feature of the Epson V33 photo scanner is the ability to scan documents into a "pdf" file. I recently scanned a 23 page document, saved it as a pdf, and e-mailed it as an attachment; and you don't have to buy Adobe Acrobat to do it. Not having to wait for a "warm-up" is a real bonus too. This scanner is a Winner! The only negative feature is the fact that Epson located the power and interface connectors at the front-right side of the scanner (by the buttons) instead of the rear of the unit.

I haven't had a scanner in a few years and this new model made it really nice to own one again. The only issue I have (and it's a small issue), is that if the scanner is sitting so that the scanner buttons are closest to you (as displayed in the picture) the power and network cables have to come up the side of the unit.It just makes it a little sloppy.Very happy with it.

I have used it little.upsideThe scanner is fast starting and fast scanning. Makes great copies or scans of documents.

Epson Perfection V33 Photo Scanner (B11B200201)The scanner works fine. Easy to setup and use. Amazon's advertisment for this product is a little misleading. It advertises the Epson v33 as a photo scanner whereas actually the v330 is the photo scanner as advertised from Epson. Although both will scan photos the v330 has a template included for aligning photos.

After getting the recommendation of a very good camera supply store, I bought this scanner to use with slides and old photos. The quality is pretty good - it's the originals' quality that isn't so great. Since I'm not a "techy", I would have preferred a hard copy of the instruction manual but I understand that's becoming a thing of the past. The machine isn't real fast but I can do something else on the computer while it's at work. I'd recommend it to others.

Thank you to all other reviewers for your feedback. This unit is a solid value considering price and features. I've scanned photos, slides and film and documents all with excellent results. It's much faster than my former HP Scanjet. The slide/film holder requires gentle handling especially the slide brackets for longevity. The included software allows for a copier function and an impressive OCR application that imports a scanned text document into Word or a PDF. One drawback to the Epson Scan engine is that it adds an underscore and 3 digits to whatever you name the scanned file. I've spoken to Epson and there's no way to disable this function. So far, I'm quite pleased and I can recommend this product.

I've owned this scanner for about two years. I bought it because it also offered a document feeder for photos and business cards, as well as negative and slide capabilities. The document feeder sporadically works and jams often -- not worth the effort. Also, the software provided was on a CD and works ONLY with Windows XP. While Epson provides updated software, another five companies also provided software for the scanner. One, Smart Panel, is almost critical to the scanner. Unfortunately, Epson doesn't support the software and refers the customer to another software company (Newsoft).I'd recommend going with another company that offers better support for their product.

I recieved this product as a Christmas present and was supper excited! I've used it for the last couple of weeks and it's worked like a charm! However after using all afternoon, I was in the middle of a scan and halfway through the scan a message pops up and says something to the effect of "cannot detect scanner". I looked and noticed the power light was not lit. I assumed a cord had come dislodged and set about to fix the problem. But that was the last time I used my scanner, no cord was disconnected and all power supplies valid, yet my scanner just died on me. Cannot get the thing to work and am heartbroken ( I love my photo's), Epson Tech Support is HORRIBLE!! You can barely understand them, and they have no regard to urgency whatsoever! Have searched high and low on the internet for problems like this and cannot find any info out there. Which I guess is both good and bad! Nice for scanning slides and photo negatives too. I like it very much. I tried other scanners for scanning slides and photo films and the quality of scanning slides and films was poor. This scanner is very good for slides and films: it is not sensitive to the fact that the films are not flat - everything seems to be in focus, and I can see the film grain pretty well on the scan (at resolution 3600 pixels per inch). The time of scanning is reasonable. Software interface is reasonably good too. Good deal for the price. Scanning regular papers works too. (to change from slides to papers one has to change cover insert). Reflective mode (for papers) is done with white plastic cover, and transparent films mode is with a lamp (lighted plastic strip) in the cover. A good scanning solution, good price. Specialized scanners for films are several times more expensive.

I purchased this scanner used, for $10 from the local Habitat for Humanity store- they even gave me a 7 day performance guarantee !! Not bad !Installation was very easy. I downloaded and installed the latest driver version from the Epson website. WinXP recognized the scanner upon connection and configured the driver(s) for me. After installation, I am able to use the scanner with Epson native TWAIN software, WinXP Scanner applets or PS Elements 2. Scans so far have been excellent, either of photographs, important documents or magazine articles. I have had no problem copying an image or text from the preview screen into a document or saveing a high resolution scan. I have not taken the time to explore the color management features of the Epson TWAIN driver, so I can not fully comment on the ability to color manage or restore photographs, slides and/or film. So far I have tended to use PSE 2.0 for those tasks. Others have commented that the Epson software is complete and usefull- I'll leave it at that.Overall, I am very happy with my purchase (hah !).5 stars for value, but 4 stars for absolute quality. More recently produced scanners are capable of yielding much better overall scan quality for critical applications. My previous scanner was (is really, I still have it) an HP PSC 750, all in one. The HP 750 is easier to use for basic functions because it has fewer feature choices and is faster to deliver a completed scan. On the other hand, output quality from the 2400 is much better than what the HP machine is capable of. That said, I still use the HP for non critical direct to paper copying. Because I do not use an Epson printer, I have go through the computer to make a paper copy from the 2400. For non critical work, this takes too much time.Given that the 2400 is now several generations old, it should be cheap to aquire. If you need a cheap utility scanner, look no further.

Although the Epson Perfection 2480 Photo (this one came along with Multi Phoot Feeder) keeps colors fairly accurate, I am disapointed when it comes to scanning photos, papers and the like on the flatbed. In this case, the area scanned is smaller than the glass plate indicates. Aligning any object to either side of the glass plate (using it's borders as the aligment tool) will unavoidably cut of part of the scanned image (as shown in the customer photos I uploaded.)The only `workaround' for this problem is to use a ruler and align it to the platter's borders and than to align the photo to the ruler. Unfortunately this will not work with larger objects, such as a letter-sized sheet of paper. Also, the scanners utility software (Espon Scan V2.65A) does not allow you to save your settings with a custom name (such as "Bob's Slides"); instead you have to overwrite an existing template, or choose the default name given (such as "Setting 1, Setting 2, etc.).Finaly, I need to point out that the driver software launched from inside a graphics application (such as Paint Shop Pro or PhotoShop Elements) crashes frequently if I make a larger number of 300dpi scans. All said, this scanner is too expensive to be purchased - so I'm going to replace it with a Cannon.

After reading numerous positive reviews of this scanner, both on Amazon and elsewhere, I decided to get it to do film negative scanning at home. So far I've been very happy with it. I just have a few warnings/caveats for others:1. Having a cat, I have major dust problems in the house. You may think your flatbed scanner is clean, but when scanning 24mm x 36mm film negatives at 2400DPI you find a different story. Keep a can of compressed air around just like you were in the dark room developing prints.2. The negative scanner works by inserting your negatives into a special removable holder that you place on the flatbed, and the hood contains a strip of backlighting. I cut all my negatives into strips of 5 frames, to fit my 5x7 film negative holding sheets. The maximum number of frames you can scan at once, however, is 4. This means that I have to insert the film one way, scan those, and then pull the negatives and reinsert to scan the last one. Often the fifth photo isn't worth scanning, but perhaps you're a better photographer than me.3. The scanning software itself is not very adept at autodetecting frame edges. I'm not really sure why it would cut a 24mm x 36mm negative down any smaller, but time and time again it does that. The only way I've found around this is to scan in "normal" mode, which scans the entire strip of 4 frames into one image file which I then have to cut into different files in Photoshop. It's a great, cheap way to get my film pictures into digital form. Instead of developing prints expensively (time- and money-wise), I can get a roll of C-41 film developed in one hour to negatives only for $2.00 at CVS, go home and cut them and have them scanned in far less than an hour.

At under $100, this scanner was a great buy for me. I wanted to scan my slides and negatives and needed to replace my old HP Photosmart Slide scanner (2400 DPI) which uses a SCSI card with ISA slot and is not possible to use with my new computer. The delivery from Amazon was fast and I was impressed with the looks - solid and smooth. The Epson scan software was nice too with all the standard histogram and curves controls. Unfortunately, the Photo Impression software was not up to mark, as it crashed a couple of times and then I discarded it. I never used the Bizcard tool. However, I soon realised it will never replace a standard slide scanner. The scans of Slides at 3200 DPI produce JPEG files of size only 700 KB. It must be doing a lot of compression, as my 5 MegaPixel camera produces 2MB JPEG images. There is no option of getting an uncompressed scan. Also it auto detects the slide frames and that crops the frames sometimes. But there is no option of selecting the frames myself, which the HP software had. Scans are noisy and the scanner takes much longer time than the HP, which used to take about 1 min per frame, and this takes 4 min per scan at full resolution.I gave 3 stars as although it takes good scans, there is a lot more data that can be extracted from the slides to get a great scan (not the ultimate scan that can be extracted from a Nikon Slide Scanner). But at this price not much more can be expected from the hardware, although some improvements can be expected from the software.

I bought this scanner having read the negative comments about the included software, but also the glowing reviews of the scan quality. At this point I would have to say I'm pleased with my purchase in general, but have been frustrated in certain ways. Overall I would have to say this scanner delivers at least fairly good quality in all types of scanning for the price you're paying, but it does not quite achieve professional or near-professional results. In the end, you still get what you pay for.My intended use for the Perfection 2400 was primarily as a high quality photo scanner and hopefully good quality negative/slide scanner (it's usually better to scan negatives if you have them, and have a scanner capable of it). My tests have shown this model far more capable with photo prints than negatives - the sharpness is not quite there on negatives, even with the resolution set to maximum (2400 dpi - the scanner will let you select higher resolutions, but they're obviously interpolated). Yes, I've made sure the emulsion side is facing the scanner. There is no available focus adjustment, and this may be the problem (this is one of the features you pay for in a dedicated film scanner, or high-end flatbed). Annoyingly, the negative attachment likes to move around on the glass simply from the vibration from the scan motor - I have to tape it down to the side of the scanner to keep it in place. Worse, the scanner driver (even the latest version from Epson's web site) does not support multisampling (scanning the same image multiple times to reduce random noise), so to get the best quality scans you will need to purchase an external program that's capable of it. There is also a serious problem with Epson's dust and scratch removal algorithm when making high-res negative scans, resulting in large blotches all over your images (especially if you're using older, dustier negatives). Again, you will need to either use a separate scanning program capable of dust/scratch removal, or do it manually in an image editor. For photo print scanning, this model is excellent, although the "auto" mode settings will not always give the best results. To get the best out of your scans you really need to learn how to use "professional" mode, and I was thankful that Epson provides so many advanced settings. With a minute or so of tweaking you can easily get a scan that looks exactly like your original photo, and displays every bit of detail.I had initially written that I had no problems with the included software, but now have to amend that slightly - the scanner has repeatedly hard-locked my PC during scans, and when it does the scanner will no longer respond even after a reboot (the scanner itself must be unplugged; there is no on/off switch). I've also become increasingly annoyed with the fact that you can't scan in the background - when doing a batch of high-res negative scans that take up to 5 minutes each, it's very annoying that you can't even realistically browse the web or do anything else in the meantime. Other than that though, the software does still work better than some people give it credit for - the one-touch scanner buttons all work for me, and each application functions as it should. The scanner driver itself is something of a weak link. This scanner is a worthy purchase at the mid-range of consumer flatbed scanners. I really wouldn't recommend this model if you're looking mainly for a negative scanner - get a dedicated film scanner instead. But for a jack-of-all-trades, master-of-none, it's pretty decent given the price you're paying.

Having had enough of spyware, viruses, security breaches and now rootkits under Windows, I have long since made the difficult transistion to Linux. I am, to say the least, very happy with Linux but not as happy with hardware vendors unwilling to make accommodations for this very popular operating system. So when I began to research flatbed scanners to digitize all my father's (and many of my own) slides, I found it difficult to decide which scanner to buy, and not a lot of information on the web. Almost no scanner manufacturers bother to make their products work under Linux. Reviews tend to be negative; people that are satisfied don't seem to be as willing to share their experiences as people who have a gripe. I have a lot of slides and not a big budget, so I needed a cheap scanner that would give me good results and it had to work under Linux. The Epson 3490 fits the bill perfectly. Sure, it's not speedy, but I get great results right out of the box. Epson has made a fine effort to make their products work with Linux. This to me identifies Epson as one of the minority of hardware vendors truly on the cutting edge and willing to innovate. You will not find all the bells and whistles in Epson's software when working under Linux (we are used to that), but you will find a solution that "just works" and that is thanks to truly impressive engineering from a truly impressive company. This little scanner is great, and while I don't know, I'll bet it works great under Windows too. Highly recommended.

First, on the most important topic: quality. This scanner produces phenomenal quality for the money. It's still a consumer grade scanner, but Epson simply delivers very good optical quality. I have scanned in 4x6 prints and used a scan to print an 8x10 that was perfectly acceptable - that is impressive.Yes, the quality is noticably lower for scans of negatives, but that is always the case with flatbed scanners, and the only real alternative in the marketplace to spending upwards of a thousand dollars for a negative scanner is to have negatives scanned professionally. You should assume that the quality level for scanning negatives is high enough for use on the web, and for reproduction as 4x6 photographs, but your scans from prints will be better. You will find this flatbed competitive in quality with the lower end negative scanners, and can consider the negative scanning capability a nice throw-in for the price. The interface is somewhat slow and tedious, in part because the "automatic" function really has limited use for me. I scan a variety of types of photographs and documents, and always end up making adjustments in "custom". It would be nice to be able to configure the software to go directly to "custom" (and would cut 30-45 seconds per scan), or to have "semi-automatic" pre-settings that would also cut time configuring the software for each individual scan. A lot of effort has gone into that automatic function, and for those who do not use the custom settings I suspect it is very valuable. For perfectionists (real or imagined) who want to make sure the scan gets all possible details and who want to carefully preview and adjust the images, the automatic function gets in the way. There is a difference among scanners in quality, and spending more will almost always get you a higher quality scanner. But, for the money, it will be tough to beat this one.

Now after 18 months of ownership, there are cloudy markings on the underside of the glass from 2 to 4 inches in that makes that part of the glass unusable.I really like the software and quality of scans, and I am thinking about buying another Epson 2480 if they can be had for under $99.

I replaced a 5+ year old Acer which bit the dust, and am I sorry it did. Pluses: The Epson can scan slides and negatives; can scan multiple pix and "separate" them. Minuses: You press the 'copy' button, and again, and again, cuz you think nothing's happening - then 18 seconds after you pressed it the first time the copy program pops onto the screen (and I have 3Ghz with 1MB RAM)! My wife often crops and resizes her scans, which was a breeze with the software that came with my Acer, but torture with Epson's. She would also 'tile' a portion of a scan to make multiple copies on one page, which the supplied software can't do. And it's twice as noisy and half the speed as my old one with comparable resolution. The price was ok, but now I have to buy third party software to do fairly basic stuff.Needless to say, considering Epson is a big name, and I thought a 5 year newer scanner would be quieter and faster, with good software, I was terribly disappointed.

So far I've only tried it on slides. In PRO MODE it works WONDERS. 3 at a time, takes about a minute per slide at about 1800+2000 pixels, 300dpi. each pic JPG is about 200K in size. And you can freely change the size to smaller or larger, or change the area to be scanned to just a cropped portion of any or all 3 slides. GREAT bundled software, and a fabulous product for under $100. Can't wait to try negatives and hard copy stuff. Very easy to connect also, just plug to USB port and AC outlet. It's also very sleek and stylish, in case beauty matters to you (as it should, many guys need to learn this when selecting wives).

I purchased this scanner for two purposes. Firstly I wanted to scan old decaying family photos and archive them on the computer. Secondly I wanted to digitally archive home office paperwork to save space. I have to say this product does both of these functions flawlessly. This scanner has more than enough resolution for scanning prints. Keep in mind that nearly all prints have less than 300dpi (dots per inch). So if you are scanning prints or text it is really pointless to have a more expensive higher resolution scanner. On the front of the scanner there is a PDF button, copy button, and email button. The copy button worked fantastic in conjunction with my Dell laser printer for quick sharp copies. The PDF button simply puts the image into a PDF file that allow you to continue scanning into the same PDF document. I have not used the email button.Overall you a fantastic scanner for the money.

For a $100 scanner, I didn't expect high quality scans. What I did get out of it was a lot better than I expected. Most of the detail in photographs and documents came out pretty good. Hey, it does photos, slides, negatives, and works great with my Mac. That sold me right there. Not everything is perfect though. When using the text "interpreter", it has a tendency to turn blemishes (fold lines, scratches) on the paper, into strange text, and unreadable ascii characters. It's not too much of a pain, as it's usually pretty easy to clean up with a text editor. When doing negatives, it does not reliably scan all the images on the negative. I've had to scan some several times to get the image that I wanted. This thing is also slow. We're talking slooow here. I haven't used that many scanners, but all the ones I've used have been lightning fast compared to this one. It took 3 and a half minutes just to do a simple document copy (scanner straight to printer). There are times when a document or photo won't scan completely (the edges are cut off). I can solve this problem most of the time, by putting a colored sheet of paper behind whatever I'm scanning, and edit that part out in photoshop. On the bright side, I've never had a problem doing slides. I can put three or four photos on the glass, and the scanner will turn them into seperate documents for each. Orientation doesn't matter either, just use the built in software to reorient the picture. (yes, it works on Macs too).If you're just starting out, and need something inexpensive, for light work, this will satisfy your needs. If you are going to do a lot of scanning, then you'll probably want something speedier. This isn't the greatest thing in the world, but it satisfies my needs.

Initially I was very impressed. I had the scanner hooked up and the software installed in no time. I immediately scanned about 3 photos just to make sure it was working and I was surprised at how quickly it did them and good they turned out. Two weeks later after not touching the thing, I tried to scan something and it refused to work. After a half hour on the phone with Epson support, it was determined that it was a hardware issue and I needed to return the product.
