What can I say, this scanner does exactly what it's advertised to.I previously had a high-end Canon Scanner but it broke when I moved from my old place. Anyway, I'm a professional graphic designer and I know that you don't need to pay ridiculous prices for a quality product. I had been looking around for some time (couple hours), comparing different products for the price and I landed at comparing the Epson V33 vs. the 330. I noticed that there really wasn't much difference aside of the software package and even then it wasn't a huge deal for me. I needed to scan in photos from a client to publish via the Internet. I would also like to mention that Epson is very well established as an extraordinarily high end imaging product. Their printers are the best in the market for the price and that trend was evident in this scanner. I noticed no visible imperfections and with 9600 dpi, the first impressions were exciting. Negative scans look great and the automatic PDF-scanning feature worked great. I tend to think that some of the negative reviews for this product came from people who don't know what they're doing, but that's just my two cents. I read the reviews (both positive and negative) before pulling the trigger on this and I'm not disappointed.I would highly recommend this product, especially since it's just under $60 right now. It's also very portable and the drivers installed without a hitch. Money well spent if you're looking for a good scanner.I know that you'll arrive at the same conclusion that I did, so don't overlook this product just because it's inexpensive.

This is the second scanner I have purchased from Amazon and I already sent back the first Cannon scanner because it was too small.I have a need for a fairly big scanner, the photo books I want to scan are around 11" by 11" and I need to scan allot of pages, so I was buying this for that project.I used to own a old HP flatbed scanner that was very big years ago with a old SCSI interface and I figured someone would still made a big flatbed scanner. The listed product dimensions for this scanner are 4.2 x 19.5 x 15.9 inchesI am measuring it right now (just got it) and its 17" long and 11" wide, how do they get that so wrong in the product description? That measurement is from the outside of the unit, not the actual scan area on the scanner, I need to actually scan pages that are 11x11"The actual scanning area is 9" x 12", so this will not really work for me, I am going to try to use it and stitch the pages together, but I did not want to have to do this! I also cannot seem to find a flatbed that is bigger or that actually lists the scanning area dimensions, which I think is strange they do not list that information.Overall I am already unset that the product description is wrong on the size I was using that information to guess the scanning area and it was totally a lie, and now I got another unit I really would not have bought if I had the right information.

I purchased this scanner this summer, and after scanning some documents, noticed that when I looked at them full size, there was some distortion and rainbow haloing. I scanned some more documents/photos as a test and found the quality issues maintained, and even worsened. So, I sent it back for another copy of the same thing. The second scanner arrived and the first couple scans were not perfect, but were passably ok, but it quickly devolved into having the same problem in exactly the same spot. It got to the point where the weight of a the lid, and then a single sheet of paper, and eventually nothing at all, was enough to make the scanning head stick, causing distortion, rainbow halos, and eventually just failing to scan at all and making a HORRIBLE clicking sound, at which I quickly shut it off. I scanned maybe 60 pages with it, and was incredibly careful to not mistreat it as I had decided it must be delicate after the first one had issues. Of the 60 scans I made, only the first 5 are useable, and by maybe the 40th they aren't even legible/complete.I didn't abuse it, it didn't overheat, it was kept flat on a desk with nothing on top of it, nothing spilled on it, it wasn't bumped, and I didn't press down on the scanning bed. It literally sat on a desk for a couple weeks, and scanned a couple sheets of paper. I'm an IT professional with a graphic design background, and have used many scanners over the years (including other scanners from Epson) with no difficulty. I can only conclude that this model is flawed.I absolutely do NOT recommend this scanner.

So the scanner is well laid out and works great for everything we needed. If that was all at $69 I would be content BUT the kicker is the software. Epson Scan has always been one of my favorite simple software packages for scanning (I modified to work with other scanner types) but the other packaged software are amazing. HAD I known how good the software was I would have paid $150 and still thought it was a bargain with the software that was included. My love for Epson printers has diminished a little (still like the home laser printers) but their scanners are still the cream of the crop at their price points IMO.Comment: I'm not sure if there's a version of this that's this excellent that has the scan feeder for multiple pages but if I had known it would be this awesome I would have spent the extra money to get that on this scanner as that would have been unfathomably excellent.

Excellent choice for scanning old photos, slides & film. Not top professional quality but surprisingly good for the low price. As mentioned in other reviews, the set-up instructions are totally useless - just use the CD and install the software in your computer, click on the icon for the User's Manual and it'll download it from the internet. The manual covers everything pretty well. The software is easy to use and the editing features are OK but I'll probably rely on Photoshop for the photos I like the most. I've tried all the modes (scanning color photos, B&W photos, 35mm slides & 35mm color negs.) and everything works great. Color restoration of old faded color photos is terrific. I'm especially impressed with the scanning quality on color negs, tho I don't expect to do much of that. Some reviewers mentioned that it doesn't scan glossy color photos very well - this was definitely not a problem, glossy prints scan just fine. I got this machine mainly to scan color 35mm slides and I am very happy so far. The 2 things to remember when scanning slides or film - (1)make sure to remove the white document mat in the lid so that the light in the lid can illuminate the slides or film, (2)place the slide/film holder on the glass properly - see users manual. Slides or film strip will be lined up near the center of glass when installed correctly. As others have said, the slide holder is a bit flimsy and you have to handle it with care so the slides don't fall out. But, this isn't a huge problem.Overall, this is an ideal choice for preserving treasured family photos & slides. You can save these digital images on SD cards the size of postage stamps. When I get mine scanned I'm going to put the little SD cards in my safety deposit box to guarantee their survival if my house should burn down someday.

I bought this scanner to scan old photos and also electronically store paper documents so that I could shred them as them came into the house (saves a 3-hour shredding session after taxes every year).Photos---------Scanning photos is very good and scanning from the negatives is even better. My only complaint is that it is somewhat slower than I had hoped, but it's a small price to pay. The negatives adapter works great.Documents--------------Scanning documents works great. Again, I wish it was a bit speedier but it's not too bad.My only real "con" (which is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5) for this is not the unit, but the software. While it works well and has more than adequate features, it is not very intuitive and it would be nice to have different nameing setups for photos vs. documents. All in all, a great unit and definitely worth the price. I would recommend to anyone.

The scanner arrived day after the order was placed. First thing I noticed when opening was a notice yelling at me "ATTENTION APPLE MAC OSX 10.8 MOUNTAIN LION USERS" Do not insert your Epsom Product CD into the drive. Go to the Epson site and download installation software. Ok, I didn't think this would take long as I have Verizon FIOS. I was wrong ! a 32MB file took over half an hour instead of the normal 30 seconds it would take from any other site. I find this pretty unacceptable from a large company like Epson that they cannot keep up with software issues and supply an up to date CD. I've yet to try the scanner, although I have not doubts it will do the job I want it to, after all, a scanner is a scanner. However, I still find that having to wait while I download software to use it is not a good thing.

I will relate my experience installing the software using Windows XP Professional 32-bit. The software installed easily using the included CD, but there were some concerns: During the installation it requested I install updates, which I could refuse. I chose to accept the updates even though it warned me that my system could become unstable due to the fact that the updates did not have a proper Windows XP signature. After installation I had no problems with my OS (operating system) or the scanner. The software auto mode was able to handle everything satisfactorily (photos and documents), and I did use the professional/custom mode when I wanted complete control or very fine resolution. Overall, I found the software easy to use, but there is a learning curve for the professional/custom mode. Although good, I did not like the format of the software user-manual (online or Windows-XP window); I would have preferred a PDF file instead. I called Epson about the warning, and this is where my problems began. Perhaps they have another service center, but I was directed to the service center in the Philippines. The connection was poor (I was disconnected once), the English was difficult to understand, and the fist level of technical support could not answer my question: Why did the updated software not have a proper Windows XP signature, and would it cause instabilities in my OS? After insisting on speaking to someone who could answer my question, I was transferred to someone who was able to answer it. The updates are for Windows 7 (therefore no Windows XP signature) but are backwardly compatible to Windows XP. So, the scanner is an excellent buy for the money, but the customer service needs improvement. Since my rating is for the scanner, it gets 5 stars. I especially liked the included OCR (optical character recognition) software included (it worked really well for me), but I have not yet used the included ScanNStitch software (for scanning items larger than the scanning surface).

The Epson 330 does a very good job scanning slides with little effort and for a great price. It can also scan negatives and photos. And it has option for automatically restoring color balance and eliminating dust. But I did not try out those features.Yes it takes close to 6 minutes to scan 4 slides. However, it requries little manual intervention to scan slides in full auto mode. Before doing any scanning, it is best to set up and icon for the Epson software on the computer. Next, tell the Epson software into what folder you want the pictures placed and give a name for the series of pictures - something like "1990Vacation". Up to 4 slides can be placed in the slide holder at a time. When started, the Epson scanner will automatically detect where each slide is and place them into the folder you specified. It will also name each slide with what you specified earlier and append a sequential number to the end of the name to make it unique. It takes may be a minute to change the slides. So the whole process takes maybe 6 minutes to scan 4 slides. This may seem like a lot to some people. But it is half the time of my old scanner and my old scanner required much more manual intervention. I normally watched online movies while doing the scans so time went by quicky. The scanner seems durable since I was able to scan about 5,000 slides in the 2 months since I bought it.The one down side is I wish it was faster and had an auto feeder. But I suspect that would be cost prohibitive.Another possible downside (depending on your slides) is that the scanner expects all slides to be 35mm. I mention this because some Kodak cameras in the 1960's made slides that were double the 35mm size and they made some cameras that mades slides that were half the 35mm size. When scanning the larger size, the Epson would chop off half the photo. When scanning the smaller size slides, it added black space to either side of the photo. Fortunately, I do not have many of those slides.Overall, a great scanner for the price.

I'm extremely pleased I selected this photo scanner instead of one of the stand alone slide scanners. My primary purpose for the scanner will be to scan over 5,000 35m slides. When I'm done I'll still have a use for it since I have thousands of still photos to scan. I found the quick guide instructions easy to follow and set-up took about twenty minutes. Scanning slides is a breeze and rather quick. Without rushing I'm getting four slides scanned and stored into "my pictures" in less than 3-minutes. I have no trouble with the slides falling-out of the included bracket for slides and negatives. They stay firmly in place and the process involves pressing a button on the scanner and clicking the scan button on the PC screen. Using some of the software features I able to turned aged 35m slides into quality digital photos, which can be edited with other programs. The Epson software intergrates with window explorer to automaticlly store the scanned slides into "my pictures" where they can be retrived for editing. The scanner works terrific for regular photos. I have placed up to four photos on the glass, spaced apart, and the scanner recognizes each one as a separate photo for accurate quality scanning. I tried stand alone slide scanners in the past and each has been a big disappointment. The Epson scanner is ideal for me and it offers multiple functions for other projects. Bottomline, the price of the scanner is far less then cost of packaging the slides and taking the chance on a photo developer like Costco to do the scanning.

I was looking for a scanner that would hold a book, allow me to hide away easily, so it wouldn't take more space in my little computer room, and just do a good job of color work. I got all of this in this nice little scanner. I love nice long cables so that I can stash under my desk and just pull it out when I want it. I have owned 6 different scanners over the years and this one is one of the best for much, much less money. Get it, you should like it, unless you are some high powered person with very, very special needs. I use it with Photoshop, put very large documents back together if the scanner takes several passes and the colors stay nice an true. I am an artist and have not had to rephotoshop work any of my pictures after the scan.

I chose this scanner to replace my old canon that recently bit the dust. I am very pleased with my decision. It is super easy to use, and the results are much better than those from my old canon. I also, pulled out some old slides of my dad's that had not seen the light o day for over forty years and scanned them. the results were amazing. I haven't had time to try the restoring software but look forward to that as well. This scanner is perfect for those who want to archive all their old photo albums (which is what I have been doing). Also, for those of you who are interested, I am running it on Windows 8 and it works great.Definitely worth the money.

I Use it with a Mac1) The scanner does not come with directions. They are available on-line and difficult to print out....BUT you don't need them if you know the following.2) The scanner buttons (PDF, Copy, Email) have erratic behavior and are slow to perform the task. Forget about them.3) Just open the application "Epson Scan" and everything works good and fast from there, AND it has very valuable options. I suggest selecting the Office Mode at the top right....and click on the envelope at the bottom right to select the type of file.4) I am very happy with the scanner but had to spend 1/2 hour on the phone with Epson to learn the above.I gave it 3 stars because of the button problem, but would give it 5 stars for performance when using Epson Scan

I used to own a entry-level CanoScan Lide 25 scanner that sold for a similar price. It started malfunctioning years ago and finally stopped working completely (no longer recognized by my computer). Maybe it's a software issue, but I figured that rather than spend countless hours trying to troubleshoot that thing, let me just go out and buy a new one.Since I wasn't so impressed by the quality and durability of the Canon, I went with Epson this time. So far I'm very impressed. It's a little more bulky and heavier than the CanoScan, and requires a separate power supply (The CanoScan only requires a USB connection for power). But on the flip-side, the lid on the Epson can be raised, and it comes with much better software. The inclusion of ABBYY® FineReader® Sprint OCR software alone makes it worth the price. I use it all the time to scan and convert magazine articles, book pages etc., and the results are great. Amazing really - I almost never see spelling errors, it easily distinguishes text from pictures, and it manages to read print even in low-contrast situations.I've only owned the scanner for a month, so I have no idea how durable it is, but for now I am very happy with my purchase.

When I upgraded to Mac OS 10.7 (Lion), I discovered that neither my old Canon LiDE scanner nor my HP Scanjet 3500c had Lion compatible drivers available. Sadly, none of the major manufacturers of scanners, printers, etc. are innocent in this scheme; they all fail to provide driver updates on otherwise perfectly good equipment. Why? Because it increases sales. Whaddayagonnado? I plan to give my old scanners to a local outfit that passes devices on to schools and others in need. I bought the Epson V330, and so far I've had absolutely no complaints. Instead of using the CD that came in the box, I read the enclosed flyer and went to the Epson Lion support site and downloaded the latest driver. What's so hard about that? What some people fail to grasp is that operating systems are constantly being updated, and driver bugs are constantly being fixed, so relying on a driver that may have been sitting on a CD in a box for several months isn't the best way. Similarly, what's so hard about using an online manual? Think of all the trees that are spared! Plus, online manuals can be updated instantly with corrections and improvements. It just makes economic sense. Epson's driver interface is perfectly fine, with four modes from the simplest automatic settings up to a professional set that gives you detailed control over any adjustment you might need, all very easy to use and intuitively laid out.The scanner itself is compact and efficiently designed, no extraneous buttons, just the basics. Mine worked just fine at once, no problems, and scans look just fine, as you'd expect. It's getting harder to find a dedicated scanner; seems like the fashion lately is to push clunky all-in-ones that try to do everything, usually not doing any one thing very well. So far I'm pleased with the Epson, and since it cost less than $100, it shouldn't be so painful when the inevitable driver inadequacy rears its ugly head in a couple years.

I purchased the V330 from Amazon from reading all the positive reviews. And, because it seemed a great value with the features and software at that price. It is. . . But when I received the first one, it made a clicking noise as the light traveled down the track and the image was smeared. NOT A PROBLEM FOR AMAZON. They quickly sent me another one (at not cost to me). But, the second one was doing the same thing. I then thought it may be something I was doing, so I contacted Epson directly. They also quickly (and at no cost to me) exchanged the second one. The third one was is a re-furbished one from Epson. It made a couple of clicks once or twice at first. But, since then it has been preforming well. Maybe 20+ scans. I've owned other Epson scanners and have had great luck with them. This one (third re-incarnation) is no exception. I use it for work mostly and scan documents. The default is 300dpi and it preforms very well. I got the model that does slides because my wife has a lot of ones from when she did photography. But, neither of us have tried using that feature yet. The scan and stitch software works surprisingly well if scanned at least 300dpi. Tried it at 72 dpi and it came out a little wrong. My favorite feature is the button for making PDFs. That is really useful for me in that I don't have to open up Photoshop or Acrobat to get an image scanned into that software. Just push the PDF button on the scanner and the packaged software opens up. Click scan, then click finish and it puts a PDF in your default folder. This is probably designed more for someone who is really needing high resolution. Which I am not. Haven't tried anything above 300dpi yet. Overall, nice scanner. Four points because I just happened to get a couple of lemons to start off. Amazon and Epson both took care of it though. SIDE NOTE: I submitted this same review to Epson's website and they said it didn't qualify. "Doesn't follow the review rules" Whatever. . .

Hey it is an entry leavel scanner.. it does an ok job.. nothing great... My older Epson was better but it would not work with Windows 7 or Windows 8. This one has some issues with Windows 7 64Bit, some of the easy auto buttoms do nothing, but with a little work and tweaking it works acceptably well. With Windows 8 64Bit it works like a dream.. didn't to do anything except go on-line and to download the most current drivers for both Windows 7 and Windows 8. Scanning text, which is what I mostly scan.. could be better as far as the overall sharpness of text.. haven't tried a photo yet... don't care much really. it is faster than my old scanner.. it warms up quicker and scans quicker ... probably due to it is LED.

Ordered this immediately and takes screaming good scans. My HP always made good scans but not until Epson did I realize how much better they should look. All of the pixelization problems with HP scanners went away with the Epson. I can now zoom in on a scan without any degradation at all.The machine is also faster than the "worlds fastest" HP scanner I have. Please! This unit is also somewhat lightweight and more portable. You can easily move it to a living room and use it on your laptop without getting hurt or chewing up massive square footage.Price was very reasonable for such quality. Try it out.

The Epson v330 was purchased for a road trip to Montana researching family records. It was very portable and easily hooked to a laptop. The software is very versatile and I probably haven't used more than 20% of its capability. The quality of the scans was excellent; it captured detail in old photographs that was not visible in the original picture. There was even one plesant surprise. I was scanning a montage of photographs mounted behind a cover sheet with squares, rectangles, ovals pre-cut to display photos. I planned to just scan the whole thing and then use the Windows clipping tool to cut out the desired photos. But the Epson v330 had a mind of its own. It detected the montage layout and isolated each picture creating a single JPG file for each photo. What a time saver!! The only disappointment was no User Guide exists that could be downloaded to my laptop; the User Guide is essentially a web application requiring Internet connectivity. Much of the remote area I was in had no Internet. The good news is that I didn't need to use the User Guide so it was an unfounded concern.

I have another model, but I've purchased dozens of Epson printers and scanners for home and for school and they've all been real workhorses. I previously owned a V330 that last me a few years and I don't notice much of a difference with this scanner. The scanner works fine. The only problem I find is it will not scan to a document. It works fairly well but will only save to a PDF (and other non-document files). The software that came with the scanner is seriously outdated (ABBYY Fine Reader Express). When I called Epson I was told that this was a 2010 scanner thus the software was a 2010 version. They do not supply an update. I went online and downloaded the latest software to work with OS 10.8 (Lion). It is not very efficient. When copying forms it is no use. A straight text file if fairly readable.Apparently ABBYY is an Adobe file. I suppose Adobe Acrobat will work better. I hate to spend over $100 to buy this software. It would make the scanner very expensive when you have to buy expensive software to make it work.TFB
