This is a great router in terms of speed and coverage. Once updated with the new firmware, the DI-624M has worked really well with "very good" signal, even through brick walls. While I was updating it, the firmware update page timed-out after about 30mins, though after refreshing the page, it was apparently finished.Unfortunately though, the router doesn't include Bigpond cable login client which is annoying since I have Bigpond. Also when I changed it's IP back to *.*.0.1 from *.*.1.1 (for ICS), the webconfig stopped working till I restarted it. Besides these two things, it's been great and I highly recommend it.Apparently it's better to update the firmware when the router's cool (turned off for a while and under a fan), and it is possible to fix bricked ones.

Having not read the reviews I picked up a 624M with a large rebate to replace my DI-524. I expected to pick up at least some additional range with my existing B and G equipment. The 1st one I brought home had a hardware problem, the second one with 1.0.1 firmware started out fine but after I tried installing the 1.20 firmware upgrade it no longer communicated with anything. The third, with buggy 1.0 firmware, would not let me clone the network adaptor's MAC address - as Comcast prefers - it insisted on incrementing the last number. The D-link service tech said this unit is basically a piece of junk and recommended that I take it back and get something else. Always a sucker for a challenge I managed to get it working with Comcast using its own MAC address about 30 seconds after hanging up from the tech. Then I added WEP, MAC address filtering, and virtual server inputs for my webcam. I don't dare touch the firmware, and was glad to see that it does clearly outshine the DI-524 in terms of range and stability (so far). I am using it with my existing wireless B and G equipment (PC, personal and work laptops, Axim X50V, DCS-1000 webcam, D-link wireless print server, & D-link DSM-320 Media Server). So far it works well with all of this equipment and with my HotSpotVPN account, and lets me connect sans wires just fine in all rooms of my 3-story house.

I've been working with 802.11 for two years now, setting up networks for friends, family and small businesses, so I'm fairly experienced. when I set up my networks, they are secure - 128-bit shared bit encryption, SSID broadcasting disabled and the end-all defense of MAC address filtering, which is how I configured this router. installation and configuration was a breeze, and the configuration options for this router cover just about any and every setting you could think of (VPN/PPTP support - excellent!). after a couple days of use, though, clients on my network started to suddenly and inexplicably stop seeing the router, right in the middle of active use. one client connection would go down while my other clients hummed along fine in full contact with the router. at another time, one client would see the router fine, put the client couldn't ping it. TCP/IP wasn't the fault, the loopback address worked fine, the problem lay elsewhere in the OSI model. disabling the NIC and re-enabling it (WXP) would solve the problem, though. baffling. since clients were randomly loosing contact with the router, I hunched that turning SSID broadcasting back on - against my security preferences - would solve the problem and, for now, it apparently has. at least I still have the power of MAC address filtering in place, so if someone really wants to try cracking the encryption and then spoofing a MAC address, have at it. my suggestion would be to move on since there a many easier targets out there, guys. note that all this applies to a DI-624 Rev C with the latest firmware (the upgrade of which was a snap). contrary to some of the other reviews here, I've found D-Link's tech support to be excellent - thorough, patient and able to actually support, but each situation is unique and your mileage may vary. I did have some problems getting my DWL-G650 PC card to operate at the advertised Super G transmission rate (it started off at 11 Mbps!), which I will write about under the reviews for that specific card when I get a chance. if you've been thinking about upgrading to a wireless network, I do indeed recommend D-Link's products (I keep all parts of my network under the same vendor for ease of support and a better chance of minimizing problems). if you're a novice user and aren't going to do advanced configurations like the kind I discuss here, I'm guessing there won't be a single hitch. and seeing as how I paid almost three times the cost of this router for my 802.11b router two years ago, the prices can't be beat. frankly, I don't see how they could get much lower. and the transmit speed of Super G is awesome - I stream mp3's off my file server all day long without any hiccups. I give the DI-624 a four star rating simply because nothing's perfect - as witnessed by the minor issues I had - but overall I definitely buy it again.

My original wireless network was pretty slow by today's standards so I needed to upgrade. I first tried a Linksys router and notebook card with their Speedbooster technology, but the notebook card would not work with my Motion 1300 Tablet. Using Amazon's wonderfully easy return procedures I returned the Linksys items and decided to try a DLink solution. As with other reviewers, I found it easy to set up and the range to be wonderful. I'm supposedly regularly getting 108 Mbs, which is great for LAN communication. This is in a location where I would regularly lose connectivity, so I'm thrilled with both the increase in connection speed and the reliability of the connection.I host some web apps on one of my servers and I REALLY appreciate DLink's ability to set up a static IP connection to that one server, so that I can route http requests to that web server (and not have to reconfigure the router if the power goes out).During this upgrade process and my (failed) experience with Linksys products, I've come to realize that some wireless cards just won't work with some laptops/tablets/notebooks. If you're fighting too hard with your setup, it's probably not you, it's probably incompatible equipment - send it back (again, this is incredibly easy with Amazon) and choose another manufacturer.

This is the most difficult product I've ever tried to deal with. And I'm technical minded. After over an hour of going through the same steps over and over, it would not configure. So at this point, I decide to give tech. support a call. On hold forever. And ever. Then, the rudest person came on the phone and told me to unplug this thing, wait five min, and try again. What the crap is that? If that is the only cracker jack advice you can give, GO OUT OF BUSINESS. When I said "I think I'll return the product" she said, "ok" and hung up on me. Simple as this: they didn't want to talk, so they give you crappy advice for a crappy product. PERIOD. If you buy this, you're a FOOL.

I just got the replacement unit installed today, and 30 minutes later it was rebooting.I have removed it and reinstalled my older DI-614+I have seen many posts on various sites across the Internet from people who have the same problem. I purchased the DI-614+ along with the D-Link DWL-650+ PCMCIA NIC card for my wife's laptop. Setup of the two devices was fairly straight-forward, but the wireless network is unreliable. Most of the time, my wife's computer is within 10 feet of the access point. Signal strength at this distance varies from "Excellent" to "Low". Also, if her computer is left on overnight, the wireless network is always down in the morning. The only way to resolve this appears to be by rebooting the router/access point. (This is an option in the web interface.) Needless to say, this is pretty annoying. If the computer were half way across the house, I would be a little more forgiving. But since it's within a few feet (with nothing in between them), I'm not so happy with it. At this point, I'm not certain whether the problem is with the access point or the NIC. Given that a reboot of the access point "resolves" the problem, I'm inclined to believe that it's the access point. Unfortunately, I don't have any more equipment to test this theory with. The rest of the review is somewhat technical. I want to make it clear that the default settings on the device allowed me to connect to the internet and wireless network without changes. However, I tinker with settings quite a bit. What is described below are my findings from these experiments. One oddity that I've encountered is that the wireless NIC seems to want to look for the access point on Channel 6 all of the time. (This is the default value on the access point.) I changed the channel of the access point to another value, and the network card would only recognize it occasionally. Once I changed the channel of the access point back to 6, though, the network card recognized the network every time the computer rebooted. (Note that even with this setting, the laptop still loses the connection on a regular basis.)Another problem I've discovered is that generating keys for WEP is not as straight-forward as it should be. With the latest firmware for the DI-614+ (version 2.0f) the access point does not allow the administrator to put in a pass code to generate the encryption keys. So, if you want to use WEP, you'll have to generate the encryption keys yourself and manually enter them into each of the wireless access cards. Of course, not allowing the pass code actually makes the wireless network more secure. But if you need the convenience (such as for a large network), you'll be out of luck.As a router, the DI-614+ fares well. Out of the box, the router works as advertised. All I did was plug my computer (on a wired network) into one of the ports and the cable modem into the WAN link, and everything worked. The default settings in the firewall are pretty secure, but UPnP was enabled by default and the router answered pings from the outside world. Fortunately, both of these options can be changed. In addition, the other firewall settings are very configurable (as expected). There are sections that allow the administrator to configure "Applications", "Virtual Servers", and other stuff. Several applications are preconfigured such as Battle.net and MSN gaming zone. These are disabled by default, but are simple to enable. (Note: The Battle.net configuration isn't complete, and won't work with Diablo II. You'll need to make some minor modifications to get this to work.)The "Virtual Server" section allows you to turn on ports such as 21 for FTP, 23 for telnet, etc. I was a bit surprised to see that port 22 (SSH) wasn't included. As with the applications, these are disabled by default and the administrator can enable them as he/she sees fit.The last section of the firewall configuration is a more "traditional" firewall configuration. In this section, two rules are pre-defined and enabled. The rules prevent all access from the outside-in and enable all access from the inside-out. These rules cannot be changed. However, rules that are added by the administrator override the pre-defined ones. One downside to the router, though, is that port 113 (identd) is visible to the outside world. I see no way to prevent the router from answering queries to this port. The response to these queries is that its unavailable, but I wish I could get it to just drop the packets instead.A quick recap of the review: the router works well and is very configurable (except for the identd port). The wireless access point, though, does not appear to be reliable.

I've owned this router for about a year. Its primary usage is light to medium home web browsing and Apple Mac <--> Windows XP PC networking. Since then I've upgraded the firmware twice. The latest firmware update added WPA support, a much needed replacement for WEP's mediocre wireless security. I've used the D-Link DI-624 on wired/wireless sessions with no problems. I'm using a Mac PowerBook aluminum on wireless to write this review. My current DI-624 setting using a Mac PowerBook is Super G with Dynamic Turbo (backwards compatible), 802.11g only enabled. I can't compare this to similar routers made by other companies, this being my only purchased router, but I'm satisfied with its performance and ease of use via browser configuration. There are plenty of professional reviews on the web, so be sure to read all you can before buying any brand of router. A router is an amazing device and I'd never use the Internet without one.As other reviewers have stated, the help files aren't the best. It would be nice to see a router help menu that stays current with each new firmware update and feature set. There is additional help information on D-Link's web site if you desire more information, such as settings for WPA and what it means for your home or business network. There was a bug in the configuration wizard in earlier firmware versions, but I'm not sure if it has been fixed since. Nonetheless, manual configuration is what I've always used to apply changes.I strongly recommend before you finalize your network, you apply any available firmware updates to both your router *and* computer hardware (wireless card). A router firmware update will wipe out any MAC filtering data, settings, etc. There are two firmware updates for this model, so be sure to note how to tell what file you need and only apply the correct one. Jot down information that you might need to enter after the update. Complete the router upgrade over a wired network, not on a wireless connection. Update your operating system and drivers first thing, as always.

I have had very good luck with dlink 802.11b routers so I was sure the new di-624m would deliver. I was very wrong. Coverage is very poor. The router would not work out of the box and required new firmware which took hours with the help of the tech line. The routers firewall does not stealth the ports on the router and only reports them closed. After many talks with the dlink tech line they stated what I already had figured out, "The router is not set up to stealth ports only to report them active but closed." I was told to look forward to another firmware update in the future. Stay away from this product and check out Linksys.

I originally purchased this router in April. The original product on which this is based the DI-624 got excellent reviews. The 624M was supposed to be the same great product w/ MIMO support.Unfortunately, this is not the case with the original firmware. As mentioned in previous reviews, a new password would take several minutes to become active. The menu options would work intermittently, or not at all. The router would hang on several occassions. The ports would not stealth automatically as in the original DI-624.To top it all off, as of this writing, there hasn't been a single firmware upgrade/fix available on the D-Link support site to address these issues. This router has been available since at least January of 2005.I ended up returning this one, and purchasing the DI-624 instead. (No problems with that model at all.)

Here's the scoop with this product. The base product and card work fine. However my woes started when I tried connecting to my company VPN it would not work. I followed the instructions to enable it - but the some of the settings would not stick in the firmware. Finally I followed instructions to reset the box - a bad mistake. The system does not work - asks you to load a new firmware. When you go to the d-link web site there is no firmware. I contacted their support - they asked me to return it to my local store which I did and got a new box ....same problem. Now d-link acknowledges that the unit does not have any firmware to download ...basically this is an unsupported product. The d-link tech supports folks are sympathetic but the only thing they will do is to replace it with the same model type which of course is worthless to me.So my advise is to stay away from this product. It is a badly designed product with a fundamental flaw where the reset button destroys the firmware and worse there is no firmware that you can download.

I used to love D-Link so I replaced my old "b"-band di-614+ with this "G"-band Xtreme di-624 and what a day and night.I would give some stars for it's performance and features but the hassle dealing with its problems is not worth it.Go do a Google search for "d-link di-624" and you would read from countless victims of this product. It works great when it chooses to. But sometimes it just does not want to connect with the cable modem. Or it just keeps restarting every few minutes like most users have complained. It also seemed that one must use a special "crash recovery" method to load the newest firmware (2.50). Either firmware for my Rev.C router yields the same results. Normally a couple reboots with manual network cable disconnect/reconnect would make the router 'fly' again but would not stop me from constantly turning my head to the modem to check for connection light.I would spend a little more and give up some features for a stable and worry-free router. I would even consider buying the old "b"-versions but not this junk. I think paying consumers really want a stability and a worry-free, or at worst a fixable router.

I did quite a bit of research on wireless routers before finally going with this product from D-link. Security wise, you shouldn't have to worry, b/c not only does it have WEP and WPA-PSK features, it should be fully compatible (thru a firmware update) with the new security standards coming out with the 802.11i upgrade this summer. It also allows VPN passthrough, so I was able to connect to my company's network from home.I am pretty familiar with computers, though knew nothing of wireless routers on my setup. The setup was easy, and the web interface easy to use, though I have yet to explore all the different options. Overall speed is very fast (used in conjunction with the wireless card DWL-650), around 40 MBPs on the first floor (80% signal strength), and ~ 30 mpbs (70% signal strength) upstairs. Range is good, although strangely, I only get a 60% reading 1 foot from the base station. I live in a large brick house, with perhaps one other wireless connection from my neighbors.I did encounter the trademark problem of initially having the router reboot every few minutes back to April 1, 2002. If you read the boards carefully, it's recommended that you do a full factory reset (some junk leftover on the memory needs to be cleared out), and make sure that you hold the button in for at least 30 seconds, leaving the power on, then off, then on again. By then, the load firmware page should appear on the web interface, and you can load the latest firmware (2.48 I think). (After loading the firmware, it doesn't tell you when it's done, so you'll have to go ahead and reboot both your computer and the router.)Also, disable any built-in internal wireless cards you might have; I had an Intel Wireless Pro 2100 on my IBM Thinkpad that was causing problems with the functioning of the DWL-650.After applying those two fixes, my network has been running flawlessly. Tech support is 24/7, and I got help from a very helpful tech that was fortunately based in the US! I intend to buy the signal booster and usb wireless adapter (for my printer) to eventually establish a true wireless network.Am very happy with the products!

Perhaps the previous poster didn't not have his router configured for "Super G with Dynamic or Static" mode enabled. Also a few bucks cheaper than the equivalent Linksys router. One thing about Linksys' router that bothered me is that no where on the box does it claim any rate of speed, however the part/model has "54g" as part of it (suspect) I was specifically shopping for a 108 Mbps throughput for video sharing on my network. I upgraded from Linksys' 1st gen 11b router so this is a major jump for me. BTW my WLAN is made up of wireless-11b/54g, and now the 108 speed. Router responds well with all mixed speeds. This leads to a 15-30 second disconnect condition while the device reboots.I'm sorry to say I really can't recommend this item (it's rebooted 3 times while writing this!)

Compatibility issues are always present and, depending on hardware you already have, there is a chance that any given router will not work for you. That said, I had a chance to test my DI-624 on four networks (both LAN/Ethernet and Wireless B/G) and it worked perfectly. Cable modems I've used were Motorola, Cisco and Netgear.I know D-Link's tech support is somewhat sketchy in the US, but I don't think this is a product you'd need support on. It self-explanatory, really. You can access it's configuration interface from any PC that's connected to one of it's four LAN ports via Internet browser on 192.168.0.1. However, there's only wireless SSID and optional password to set, everything else in plug and play. Unless you want to customize firewall, DHCP and things like that. Actually, there's a demo of this interface on manufacturer's site so you can check it out yourselves.Using DI-624 in a home network with 3 "wired" PCs and 2 wireless notebooks has been a trouble free experience. Suddenly, all 5 PCs were connected to the Internet and were in LAN. It's range is superb - I can connect to it from the parking, which is some 300ft from my builing, and router is on the 5th floor, behind a reinforced concrete wall. Of course, inside the apartment itself, reception is always perfect. I just had to set password, though, so I wouldn't provide free wireless Internet to entire building.

The router worked fine. I had plenty of signal everywhere through my house. The problem was that the DWL-G650M card didn't have a 'super G' option available. That meant that I could only connect at 54mbps rather than the full 108mbs. D-lin's support was able to replicate the problem, and after 5 hours on the phone, they didn't have a solution. On the plus side, they did try very hard to help.I ended up returning the card and the router, and buying a the Linksys WRT54GX router and WPC54GX. If you don't care about 108 vs 54, or you have the patience to wait for a firmware upgrade to fix the Super G problem, then you can't go wrong. If you want to take advantage of teh 108mbps, take a look at the Linksys or the Belkin competing products..

This router is my first wireless one ever and I am very pleased with the purchase. After a lot of research, I decided on the D-Link. I have read that LinkSys routers set the standard for ease of use, but I cannot really imagine how much easier installation and setup can get! Honestly, I had the router setup in under 10 minutes with my laptop connected to my cable modem and accessing the internet via the router's LAN port (i.e. ethernet cable). The router sports some nice firewall features. I was not too impressed with the online help however. Several options that the router offers for configuration were not described in the online help (stored in router firmware). The D-Link support site has decent information, perhaps enough for you to get most problems taken care of. However, I had an issue when using the D-Link DWL-G650 card with WAP security which after about 6 hours of frustration got resolved in about 5 minutes with a phone call to customer service. Anyway, this was no fault of the router itself since the blame lies on the outdated driver D-Link ships with the PC card. I use AT&T VPN solution to access my office network and the router works just fine. The DHCP server came up just fine and my machines were happily on the network via wires.Pros:- easy to setup- good security features- D-Link website has pretty good cust service info- IPSEC VPN passthrough worked without any issuesCons:- online help included in firmware not the best- Several advanced options of firewall etc not very well documented (ie. not that easy to use for those inexperience with advanced security settings)Overall, I'd give this router a 4.5 stars and would definitely consider it a good buy for both the novice as well as experienced computer users.

Still, it drops out intermittently, and there are better choices.(1) Drops connections - a lot.(2) Many - hundreds of websites - report the same problem.(3) D-Link hired lots of marketers to write good opinions of this device. Don't trust them.(4) I know what I'm doing. I've set up my computer on literally a dozen different networks without a problem, and configured routers of various stripes for almost a decade. This isn't a newbie error - I was floored for many hours trying to get this thing to work.(5) It still doesn't work reliably.(6) This issue isn't a 'bad unit' issue - many other people sent in their D-Link routers, got a new one, and had exactly the same problem.Bottom line: one of the worst purchases I have made -- and I know what I'm doing. I'm a systems administrator and have years of experience working with networking equipment, and this is one of the best, if not the best product in it's category. I have always been happy with D-Link products but I was a bit skeptical with this one because of the mixed reviews. I took a chance and I definitely was surprised, as this product is even better than any of the other previous D-Link products I have used. Where can I begin...first of all make sure you get rev. C, not A or B. I have a lot of networking knowledge, but most people who would consider this product could at least have an internet connection with it in a few minutes. Despite it's simple easy to use setup interface, the features are unmatched in any product in it's class. D-Link is always good about releasing significant firmware updates and this prodcut is no exception. Everything you read in reviews about this product, that users complain about, has been fixed with future firmware revisions. For example, they added MAC reservations, they added an option for 802.11G only mode, they now have 108Mb/s support (although you need their network card for this). etc. I can't go into detail in this space about the excellent features, but let me say that I have a very sophisticated home network and this is the only home router that does the job for me. Multiple VPN connections, using PTP or IPSEC work great on this thing, WITHOUT turning off the firewall (read the fineprint with other products). The product does port redirection not just port forwarding (again look at similar products). This product is also very useful if you are looking for a product that can help limit what your kids can do. More features for restricting Internet Access than any home router I have seen. Oh, and range is excellent I get 54Mb/s anywhere in my 3 bedroom house, and I get good signal strength all the way out to our street (and beyond) at about 5.5Mb/s. Mixed 802.11b and 802.11g clients also work very well, contrary to what some others have said. Anyway, I have had no problems with this product whatsoever, and it's one of the best pieces of networking equipment I have ever used.

This is my second router - my first was a wired, D-link DI-604, which worked like a charm. Then, I bought this wireless one. Almost immediately, the problems started - random router reboots, like everyone else seems to have.Four calls to tech support got me nowhere, until the final, 2nd level support person I talked to suggested something interesting. I disabled the wireless capability entirely via the setup interface, and physically removed the antenna just to make sure. The support person said that if it then works without incident, that means something in the "environment" is sending a signal that is causing the modem to reset itself.Well, sure enough, the router is 100% OK now. But, it's also now not a wireless modem. The culprit? In the next room, no more than 5 feet away - a 2.4GHz Cordless Phone, bought around the same time as the modem. If I leave it unplugged, or if I leave the wireless capability of the modem off, I'm OK. With both on, I get the drops. So, you have two choices: avoid cordless phones or any other appliances in that frequency range (good luck - it's amazing how many appliances cause various radiation signatures), or alternately, you could buy a modem that DOESN'T ACCEPT RESETS FROM EXTERNAL WIRELESS CONNECTIONS! I recommend the latter. This modem has an obvious, fatal flaw.

While all other features of this product work fine, there is one key deficiency that is not evident to consumers via presales information. The problem is that computers with wireless network adapters cannot access devices/computers that are physically plugged into the router's ports. This was confirmed by DLINK's level two support. DLINK simply won't talk to you about this limitation because they consider it a "networking issue" and therefore, you're on your own (aka SOL).How will this impact you? Well, if you want to do file sharing between a laptop and desktop computer you're going to have a problem. In my case, I have a DLINK DP-300U print server plugged into the router. I can print to it just fine via wire, but I can't print via wireless. Can't even ping it from wireless.I mean, the fact that you can't form a network amongst the devices connected to this product via wired and wireless connections is an amazing oversight. No, it's not firewall software, etc., etc. Using a laptop with a USB "wired" adapter and two "wireless" (g and b) adapters, the same result appeared in all tests. Wired worked for communicating with devices physically connected to the DI-624, but wireless did not.In case I wasn't clear earlier, all devices, wired and wireless can talk to the DI-624 and they can access the Internet. Again, the problem is that on the DI-624, wired and wireless devices cannot communicate, making a home network a pipe dream. All devices in these tests interacted perfectly with the DI-624's DHCP server and all were on the same subnet.

1) 256-bit WEP with other D-Link adapter cards. (The other brands have 128-bit as the highest encryption). Plus enabling this level of WEP doesn't effect speed performance like other brands do.2) MAC Filtering. I can restrict which actual adapters can connect to my network, wired or wireless. The advantage is clear for wireless, but the advantage for wired is in case someone brings a laptop with a wired adapter. They can't just sit down and plug in, they need permission first.3) Setup/Configuration is a snap. You just login with your web browser and click on what you want. It is very clearly laid out and easy to navigate. 4) You can disable SSID broadcast, you have been able to for a long time. You can also turn off the wireless portion of this router so that when you aren't using it, or say are going on vacation you know you are safe from those pesky wardrivers. (eventhough the MAC filtering and 256-bit WEP should be enough)5) The 802.11b+ speeds. a.k.a. 22Mbps - plus 4x mode. With these enabled and with your D-Link wireless adapter card (DWL-650+ and other + products) I can get 10Mbps raw data transfer speeds. Most 802.11b networks can only achieve 5Mbps if they are performing optimally.6) The range on this router/AP is plenty adequate. In my 1500 sq ft home I get almost full coverage with my AP in a central location away from most electronic devices. There are only certain places where I don't get signal, but lets just say I get the signal where I need it. I can be outside on the porch, in the bathroom, in any of the bedrooms, kitchen, parts of the den, and so on.7) The combination of this firewall, smart downloading, and windows updates keeps me virus free. Overall I feel very safe, very comfortable and very free to roam the house with my laptop. Plus my other PCs are safe and work fine.I've had this router for about a year with no problems and upgrading is always fun since D-Link is either fixing bugs, adding more speed, or more features with every upgrade.Only you can decide for yourself which router you get, but for this price and you get all this I'd say your search is over.

The DI-614+ (rev B and earlier) consistently outperforms more expensive models from netgear and linksys in distance testing (check PCMAG and PCWorld for starters). While I have no hard data of my own to support these tests, I have found this router to outperform my 2.4GHz phone (which otherwise isn't a terrible test for range.)Of course improving antenna preformance isn't a bad idea either and amoung many options for doing so you might consider http://osiris.urbanna.net/antenna_designs/projects/Ez-10/.The 614+ gets its fair share of bad consumer reviews, but you have to take these with a grain of salt --- setting up a wireless network is not like hooking up a new keyboard. The 614+ does not have as many configuration settings as some other routers, but the available settings are adequate for most users. I have set mine up to allow only the MAC's I enter, to NOT broadcast its SSID (under Advanced -- Performance) and to use 128 WEP. (I also run firewalls on all my machines.) Turning off and on each of these settings without losing specific parameters is quick and easy. It is true that the 614+ does not generally allow you to have different settings for wireless versus hardwired computers or to enter a phrase to generate keys (a very nice feature). It is also true that the interface is a little weak. Still for the price (like $30 after rebate here recently), it is a steal. If you need a router with better distance performance than the 614+, I suggest that you ignore the standard netgear and linksys offerings and move up to a 200mW unit (like one of the Senao offerings). Of course then you should get comparable adapters (like the SMC High Power PC Card --- which is a good bet in any case). Here is some last advice: assign a unique SSID and set up the net without any security. Once you have everything working then you can add in security features... oh, and check the channel --- different vendors default to different channels.

I've had this router up and running for about a year now and I've run into too few problems to ding thie router from it's outstanding daily use. I've thrown everything from LAN gaming, Online gaming, multi-day long download times, VPN passthrough, PCAnywhere access, broadband video phone traffic, not to mention lots of 802.11g and 802.11b wireless access. This router can handle it all with the right configurations and proper settings. The problems I had were few and far between and were easily solved with a reboot and/or corrected settings. I was usually the cause of the problems anyway. I'm a little impatient sometimes. :)Overall I have to give this router 5 stars and I hope it is at least in your list of products to consider.

I thought I'd just make this clear so that there is an updated review with the latest info. Yes it is fast, Yes it is reliable, and Yes D-Link provides upgrades all the time, for free even!

I purchased the D-Link AirPlus DI-614+ based on rebates from Dlink and my need for a wireless connection. I found setup to be a breeze from the router's side, but the wireless PCI NIC was much more work. Out of the box, both worked, but my speeds were low and I knew I had no security. On to configuration as wireless is inherently insecure. I played with the settings and read the manual to try and make sure 3 things happened: I wanted encrypted data, connection speeds of 22 Mbps and I do not want my neighbors piggybacking on my connection or into my LAN. I achieved all, but with some work and technical knowledge. The problem is that many manufacturer have moved to manuals with simple definitions of features, not detailed information about configuration. I suppose they know we rarely read them. I network Windows 2K daily, but I think others might have some difficulty configuring the advanced (necessary) features of this device. Many may not even think about security issues since it will work out of the box more or less, which will leave them open. DLink does not stress the need for security and does not explain clearly how to implement it. There is another reviewer who previously said you cannot keep your neighbor out of your LAN. This is not true as you can keep you SSID from being broadcast or use encryption to only allow your computers to connect. I tested this and verified with D-Link tech support (replied by email overnight!). He was right that they do not implement it in the same way they use to or how he wants it, but the capability is there. It again is just not done in a straightforward manner. This router also has four ports for wired access as well, so I also hooked up my other PC. Now that everything is set up, I love it. The problem I find with this and other home NAT routers is that the manufacturers put many features in the routers, but supply poor assistance and explanation in configuration. The web interface for this device is not as clear or as well organized as others and the manual is mostly definitions. This means a less technical person will spend a good deal of time setting security and may not get the 22 Mbps promised. Since this sells in Best Buy and here at Amazon.com for the standard user, more step by step instructions would help on the setups that require multiple field configurations. Overall, this is a very good product that I found works great once configured. I am not sure you will get much better in other brands. I have used Linksys, Siemans and Belkin routers and they all have some level of limited documentation and funky interfaces. PCWorld verified the 22 Mbps speed of this device and with 256 bit encryption the D-Link AirPlus DI-614+ begins to stand out among the rest.

This router packs a lot of features (punches) for a relatively low price. It is easy to set up on my PC through a wizard, although in my case, I have to also reset the router by turning the power off and on. After this initial setup, it works like a charm. It has great range. My router is tucked away on the second floor and I can still get good signal in the basement from a laptop with a matching d-link DWL-G650 card. My other laptop, a Mac Powerbook G4, can also connect at b mode with no tweaking on my part. Great compatibility as well.As for problems that some reviewers here complained about, I highly recommend downloading the latest firmware which fixes the following problems :1) Full compliance with the final, ratified 802.11g standard2) SSID broadcast can now be disabled for better securityTo the reviewer who complained that his Win XP laptop recognizes his DWL-G650 pc card and connects to the wireless network, but that the d-link's own utility can not see the card and the network ? The problem is that Win XP assigns to the card its own generic driver. You have to download the latest driver from d-link, uninstall the Win XP driver, and then tells Win XP to install/update manually the driver from d-link! Here are the detailed steps :Go to control panel --> system --> device manager --> network adapter --> DWL-G650 whatever ...Uninstall the Win XP driver for the card. Pull out the card and insert it back in. In the Windows new hardware setup wizard, click on set up/find driver manually, and then browse to the folder where you have unzipped and installed the latest d-link driver and utility. After this, the d-link utility will be able to see and configure the card and manage the wireless network.Overall, this is a great wireless g router with a good support site. Very satisified and highly recommended!

This is my third wireless system. The last either had bad reception problems, bad connection problems or just stopped working. They both were SMC systems. They both were small nightmares to get up and running, and of course customer support sucked. I got rid of my last wireless system which was 802.11a which I bought because I thought it was much better. I am not a computer wiz I'll admit that but this technology should be easy for people like me to set up and use. I am who they sell this stuff to.I read reviews and decided to get this system with the D-link DWL-G650. I held my breath when I started setting it up. I was waiting for the minute when I would realize that I would need to call customer support. That didn't happen. This system did almost set itself up. I have a 2.4GHz phone and it doesn't seem to effect the range. I live in a brick house and I just went outside in my driveway, on the other side of house from where my wireless router is set up and I was getting almost 100% full signal strength. The online interface is very easy to use and the instructions are easy to follow. I did upgrade the firmware before I set up any of the hardware and the 108Mbps system is up and running. I can't say if this system will work tomorrow, but today I am very suprised at how it works.

The setup of the router is simple. You can actually go to D-Link's website and use the emulator, that way you can get an idea on what the configuration screens look like.I have the Rev C router, which is smaller and has only only 1 antenna. It supports both WEP and WPA security. The range in my 2 story house is good. The router is on the second floor. From time to time, while sitting down stairs, I will get interference from my Neighbors router, if my card loses connection with my router. With the firmware upgrade you get speeds of up to 108 mbps. I average around 42 mbps sitting downstairs. Keep in mind if you have any wireless hardware that does not support 108 mbps turbo mode it will prevent your router from using it. I have had it for a month now, so far everything is working good.

Set up was a cinch! Was up and running in 30 minutes with 3 computers. The firware update for the router wasn't hard but does require some computer knowledge. Teamed with the DWL-G650 Network Card(firmware updated) I really don't see how it could get any faster. I actually tested the wireless connection compared to a direct cable connection and it was only .1 Mbs slower using wireless, which is amazing. Using Road Runner I was downloading 380KB/s wireless. As far as I can tell the range is outstanding. I am going through 3 walls and 30 feet right now and have excellent signal strength. I highly recommend this product to anyone who doesn't want to settle for average as this product is far from it. Well worth the money and seems to be very high quality! Great product D-link

It looks good, is fairly small, and was a breeze to set up. At first, when the computer was in the same room as the router, it was great. Super fast. When I moved the computer to the basement, it still worked fine at first. The basement is two floors down, but directly underneath the router. So the actual distance was only 20 feet at the most. The next day I couldn't get a signal at all. I tried rebooting the router and the computer. No luck. It would pick up a signal for about five seconds and then drop it. Then I disconnected/unplugged the 2.4GHz cordless that was on the same desk as the router. Voila! I got a signal with the link quality at 99%, and the signal strength at 70%. However, apparently that is not nearly as good as a 33.6k modem, as it took both Yahoo! and espn.com about 4-5 minutes to load up. Each. So, I took the router and NIC back. What was the point of that?I think that this router does exactly what it is billed to do. I also think that it would work great if it only had to go through one wall or floor. Two was too much. The equipment worked perfectly fine. My problem was that the technology just isn't good enough yet. At least, not without an external antenna.I'm waiting for the prices to drop on the 802.11g stuff.

I have tried SMC, Netgear, and D-link wireless routers. I like the D-link most of the bunch. Their software is the best of the three. It has a little small and light AC power adaptor. The speed seems good and the range is good.Netgear has a sexier package--slightly smaller and more rounded but its is offset by having a HUGE, heavy brick of an AC Power Adaptor that weighs what seems like about four times the weight of the router. Netgear had about ten feet more range than the other two, but I actually travel with my wireless router and the huge adaptor doesn't compare well to D-links.The SMC has the worst software of the bunch. The one I'm using is a couple years old though so maybe they fixed that up in the newer versions. This router has a parallel printer port which I like alot so I use this one at home. Its range is the same as the D-link. Speed is slightly slower. In the end D-Link is clearly my favorite and the one I would recommend to anyone (unless they need a printer server).

I got the Dlink as a replacement for my Linksys BEFSR4 (non-wireless) which died during a lightening storm. At first look the User interface is confusing but I soon realized it was better organized for the new user. The routers DHCP didnt pick up my DSL ip so I had to hard code my ip and then flashed the 2.0 firmware. I would recommend everyone to upgrade their firmware to atleast 2.0. I set up WEP 256 right from the startThe Bad:1. It worked well with my Dlink 614+ card on one of my laptops, but I could not get the configuration utility to work on my main laptop. I finally got it working by hacking the windows registry, but Dlink Support are still clueless.2. I was in for more problems when I bought a US robotics wireless card, you would think that 802.11b would ensure smooth compatibility. I got the card all setup (had to reduce the wep to 128 bit as WEP 256 is not supported on this card.) The router seemed to detect the card as I could see the MAC address in the wireless status screen, but there was no ip and no link. I havent tried using any other cards but looks like there could be a compatibility issue.3. When setting my Virtual servers (port forwarding) I only set one custom port forwarding and when I tried to add one more it reported that it had "run out of space". But infact it allows me to add more settings on other pages.4. D-Link claims this device to be a router, but there is no way to statically route my connections along a particular path. I think thats essential because then I could share my wireless internet connection with anyone and not compromise my LAN. My LinkSys had this feature I dont know if the LinkSys Wireless router has this feature.5. Their support stinks6. No SNMP Support. My LinkSys router used to support SNMP (Simple network Management Protocol allows you to save logs on your computer) and SPI (stateful packet inspection rejects any packets whose connections dont originate from your LAN)The Good: 1. D-Link has the best warranty in the industry 3 years (My Linksys died in 1.5 years with a warranty of 1 year)2. The Dlink is fast I can get up to 22 MBPS3. The range is great.4. Has a feature by which you can save all your configuration changes on to a file great if you want to reset your router or change setting and experiment.5. Good buy for a novice user.6. Great price

I have had minor hang-ups since I bought this router. I bought it to be able to handle my VPN connections, my kids' gaming habits, file sharing programs, and all on wired OR wireless. These have all been working great for me. It is hard to believe that others are having so much trouble. Everything I've thrown at this thing it can handle. My wireless connection is great, right now we only have one laptop that can take advantage of the wireless but when a buddy comes over, or when we get more laptops I will be ready. The 22Mbps only works with other D-Link products of course, but you can buy them in a bundle. I have a DWL-650+ in my laptop and it gets constant 6-7Mbps when I am on the same floor as the DI-614+. When I am upstairs I get about 3-4Mbps. This is perfect because our ISP only gives us 1.5Mbps speeds.Setting everything up was fairly simple since all the features are right there in this one box. We all run Windows XP and which only made setting this up even easier. From within the web based configuration I was able to open specific ports to allow certain PC games and file sharing programs to work properly. There are even preset firewall rules that allow you to play MSN Game Zone and more, all you have to do is enable them. Another plus is that I can set up "Parental Controls" to disallow certain websites from showing up on my kids' computers. I can do this by entering in keywords I find inappropriate into the parental control area. This router continues to work flawlessly to this day.Our family isn't exactly novices when it comes to utilizing a router for all its uses but we sure are taking advantage of what this router can do. I am very impressed and somewhat proud that I can get this one product to do so much for us and at such a low price. This is definitely a great value.

I purchased this with a Dlink G650 to use with my Verizon ADSL service. The install application is fairly simple, but, when finishing up the install it would not assign an IP address. The wireless connected fine but what good is it if it can't access through the DSL modem. When I tried calling Dlink I waited over half an hour and gave up. I tried calling Verizon who said they could only help me if I had a Linksys :-(.. So I've been trying to call Dlink support without success in getting through.
